  • Scientist Mike Groth (ham radio operator VK7MJ) demonstrates the usage of a Royal Enfield motorcycle as a GoPro HD video camera platform. Mike also discusses some salient features of the Royal Enfield motorcycle, on which he traveled over 1500 km across South-Eastern Australia in January 2014. Mounting the camera on the petrol tank seems to produce more stable video results than mounting the camera on the handlebars.

In 1990 did a whole year all around india on a 350 bullet. no back=up or support, no mobiles or internet back then, tight budget a few tools. what an adventure! In a year I only bumped into 2 other westerners on enfields.

In those days the bullet was bullet the gear shift was unique in the right side.with neutral lever too. The thumo was different. Entire assembly was different. Even the weight was heavy. Now they sell baby bullets.

By the way, the modern bullets, all the UCE models are actually, heavier than the cast iron ones..
Cast iron ones weighed at the max around 160 kgs with fuel while the modern UCE enfields weigh almost 200 kgs with fuel!
      That's a big difference!
Power and efficiency wise, the UCE engines are more powerful and efficient..
      These are facts!
Though I absolutely love older cast iron engines!!

I wonder why people are worried about speed ? RE is not built for raw power or speed.
50mph/80kmph is the bike offers best riding experience no matter you are in a town or a highway.
It's a heavy bike and it's rock solid in a highway. You can enjoy cruising 24/7 365 days with that sweet little thump from RE.
If you put a lot of strain on the bike. It will be tiring and boring within few mins like any bike.
The old school technology used in the RE is very simple and easy to repair by any person. He just need to observe to it when your mechanic repairs it.its only simple nuts and bolts that you can take out and install back again with ease.
This is my personal experience with a re 1993 with cast iron engine.
Pls don't rev the bike too high.. it will not give any excitement or any advantage in RE.
    Hope it helps

So far as I'm aware, Mike doesn't have a youtube channel, and he's not hugely interested in motorcycles. His interests run more, as mine do, to electronic engineering and communications - the wi-fi, GPS and GoPro aspects of this upload, on which few of the bike nuts have commented.

This video has an extremely valuable description about Royal Enfield motorcycles, even the title depicts it.
In my opinion the electronic/camera aspect of the video gets obviously faded by Mike's notorious knowledge and enthusiasm about the Classic 500.
BTW I love both, electronics and Royal Enfields.

might as give my 2 cents worth on these wonderful bikes. first off one guy said it was missing the right swing arm nut ....unfortunately that's how little that keyboard warrior knows about these bikes as any uce would know its only the plastic cover plate and the swing arm bolt is inside...lolif your wondering what make me think I know so much about these bikes well for starters in the past 4 years I have purchased 4 c5's and 1 b5 and a gt - all new but not at once...lolI usually ride one for a few months then when a new model comes out buy it and repeat the cycle. at the moment my current ride is a 2015 black chrome C5. these bike are very very good for what they were designed for. nice country back roads sitting on 80 to 100 kpm say 50 to 60 mph and if you have not got one with too much vibes a bit more...lol many times I have set off on a ride and done a 200 mile run in an afternoon and that's just cruising around the 60 mph mark with the odd restfront disc brake is pretty good rear drum works but not crash hot. solo seat bit hard prior to 014 better padded after 014c5 models with 19" front wheel and 18" rear handles a lot better when pushed than the offset model and that's a fact! petrol consumption good on all model say 80 to 85 mpgelectric fuel pump can be expensive to replace - say $300 plus - so don't let it run out of gasmost important of all do a very easy run in from new and these bikes will treat you pretty good. no they will never replace a Honda or any of the other jap bikes for reliability or workmanship but you will meet heaps of new best friends as soon as you park the bike or fill for gas.unlike some who shoot their crap around the airways my rides are all on youtube. I really enjoyed watching the above 1500klm jaunt and a credit to the rider but sometimes you read the comments and these bikes deserve much better because I think they are better.

A nice video but i see you lubricate the chain while the Royal Enfield runs with idle rpm in the first gear and you kept talking with a person and sit squat!!!That is a quick method to lubricate the chain but only one mistake and it is the last time that your are healthy!!!Maybee you very experienced with that please warn other people to DON’T DO THIS!!!My method is:Put the ignitionkee off! And i know it is not easy with two panniers but anyway:Turn the rearwheel best backwards by touching the tyre with your left hand and spray with your righthand and don,t talk to somewhone when you do that if you love your fingers!By the way i am a righthander! After that,in my opinion it is not healthy for the transmission to run idle in first gear even unloaded on the centrestand(maybee a 4cilinder but not a big single even with a heavy flywheelmass.Greetings and good health!

I have a 2013, and have put a lot of km on it, there has been minor problems, but the bike has been a lot of fun and would recommend it to any one and if need be, I would buy another. If I needed to get somewhere fast, I should have left yesterday. By the way I have put most of km on with a side car which has given me and my dog a lot of enjoyable riding, if I wanted to hear something else, I could have recorded and listened to the other sounding machines and still saved the extra big dollars to buy another Royal Enfield.

+Maurice Bertrand As a person who has owned and ridden many kms/miles on an RE for more than a decade. I can say that the person who said not to ride it too long above 60mph is correct. Unless you have time and money to go on servicing the bike and happy to not get frustrated when the engine seizes everytime you ride her constantly above 60mph irrespective of how impeccably you have maintained the motorcycle. This speed is especially true for an Old RE Cast Iron engine and the engine gets better if you have the AVL built engines. Hope that helps.

Back in the early 70's I horse traded for a Indian Enfield. It had been worked on, and I knew it was fast. (no speedometer) I would run it about 1/2 way thru 3rd gear before backing out of it. The biggest, or most dangerous, problem with it was you looked between your hands that were approx. 6" apart and eye level. So, there's no getting out of the wind. A friend at work wanted to buy it and started researching the bike. A bike shop owner in Birmingham, AL was familiar with this bike and told him it would turn the 1/4 mile under 11sec. That's not all that fast compared to the 2strokers, but having to sit straight up in the wind!!! Not gonna doit, Not gonna doit. The guy wanting to buy it was only about 5'4", that would made him one of the first folks to have " Ape Hangers " .Now I own a 1970 Royal Enfield, same engine, but pure stock. It's either the 3rd or 6th to the last one made, when Enfield stopped production in 1970. Would that I had a pic to post, it's still a nice ride, somewhere around 5ooo miles on it. Yeah, it's in storage, since the late 70's. It has "Extinct" painted on the side of the fuel tank.

    after reading several come
nts about engine reliability and stuff , i want to clear some facts. re has got 3 generations of engines since modern times. 1old bullet engine with pressure release ,cb points and separate crankcase to gearbox driven by double chains, second gen was improved version tci ignition, higher comp rest every thing same , much much much reliable but carby still burnt those sparkys so i had two always spare..now 2nd type was made only for 500 which was aussie degined by company ugl .. the engine was a ultra lean burn producing only 2hp more than 350. wasnt successful . then now present gen engines made in secret conjuction with aussie company , unit construction design in corporating gearbox in crankcase. ok ultra reliable and with efi on 500 the only way to seize that baby is a 3 min full throttle and back tyre stuck in deep sand situation , yep ive done that too... long story short these babys have evolved and now revolutionised. by the way after engine seize engine started after half an hour and ran 2000km before some body told me abt mild smoke.

This is what I like. Good interview that divulges FACTS. Regarding the bike, half of me likes the fitness for purpose, sound and beauty all in equal measure. The other half doesn't like the inefficiency and obsolescence of the design as a whole.

    • @724tomjohnston
      @724tomjohnston 8 років тому +1

+Sir Palomides That obsolescence and inefficiency (in names only) is why I bought the bike. Riding for 46 years and 71 years old, I got increasingly tired of boring bikes that made no noises and transmitted no mechanicals. Electric start, fuel injection, electronic ignition, hydraulic lifters, 3 stage catalytic converter, etc. in a REAL looking bike. I couldn't resist and just love riding.

You can build your own transmitter, or a low power one doesn't cost much. Yes, it's enjoyable, and ham radio has a chance element - dependent on ionospheric conditions - whereby you can meet anyone in any part of the world. Unlike Internet chat, you can at least be sure that the person at the other end of the chat has an interest matching your own, in radio, in electronics, and maybe in fabricating radio equipment.

I love riding my 2013 Royal Enfield B5. It is an experience like no other. If you want or need speed, buy a Japanese bike. I ride mine between 50-60 mph. Above 60 mph, the vibration gets really bad. It is no longer that sweet "thump thump thump" that makes the bike so much fun to ride slow. It becomes a high frequency buzz that will shake your teeth out. It will also cause welds to break, and parts to fall off. Remember this is a long stroke single with a heavy flywheel. And every revolution of the crank, that big heavy piston has to come to an abrupt stop and change direction twice. You can only go so far with that until things fly apart. People claim these bikes (the UCE models) can be ridden at 70-80 mph, and they can be. But I suspect that it won't be for very long.

No. Not as rattley as this one. But the thump thump is pretty much the character of a Royal Enfield

The GoPro camera is inside a transparent airtight compartment, and whatever sound is recorded to the camera is conducted through the bike's frame in the traveling parts of this video. As the clip is intended principally as a guide to the usage of electronic aids to communication, navigation and shooting video, we don't see the sound as relevant - though the bike was then (2014) and still (2018) is working flawlessly.

Thank you for the upload, from California. I have only just been learning very recently of this bike (which would be my first real motorcycle), with only 2 years quite recently and 10k miles of commuter and weekend jaunts on a 150cc vintage scooter, at 215 pounds (the bike), and only a quarter century ago few practice sessions on blacktop/off road on a Yamaha 700, and one neighborhood mile driving an old Goldwing.
Went from thinking Yamaha VStar 650, or Vulcan 500...though I also loved the look of the Triumph America, and even being told by many a Suzuki Volusia/C50 rider that THAT would not be too much bike for me, my experience, that Cruiser look I was liking. The Vstar is ruled out, highway vibes at 65 being strong, and a lot of them for sale tells me folks either don't like that or simply outgrow them quickly--not a problem with a bike like this, which has so much CHARACTER, speed is not a factor in liking it....and I in any case do NOT want a bike that will be so torquey or powerful off the line (possible, with 800ccs) as to have to under drive it, per se, or risk mishaps.
I do like the Cruiser looks, but SAFETY is my primary concern, apart from the freedom factor. That Scoot was a 45-55mph ride mostly (62 downhill, but the speedo was 3-5mph optimistic), so I would NOT miss any power factor. Thinking of perhaps a used (2010 on up) Military green Royal Enfield.
**This goes to show one cannot research enough. Your info on the heat of the pipe, those crash bars seem one FOR SURE upgrade. I like that it is only 410 or so pounds, i.e. not so large a leap in weight, and LOVE that with proper tires I am guessing it is so off or rough road capable, work horse as you said. Have seen vids of trips in the Himalayas and the like. To me, this bike seems like my choice of horse, if I could presently own one, namely the Criollo--hardy, stout, hopefully fairly low maintenance.
Less is more is my philosphy, and at 49 in this computer and smart phone cluster you know what age, this traditional bike holds A LOT of appeal. If the 2010's or a little newer have indeed made the leap in top end speed (*think the 2009, a vid of a test ride, said top speed then was 70MPH) to 80, ie. 85 downhill with a wind at your back...and indeed in any case the bike was NOT as claimed STRAINING, I could easily see myself happy with 65, 70 MPH tops normal cruising.
    My humble thank you!

P.S. I am not looking at this bike as a daily HWY bike, FWIW (my mention of the VSTAR being poorish there), mostly a commuter and weekend country roadster, normal roads. But I would not want as heavy a bike as the Yamaha (maybe 530 plus pounds, fueled up) that I have seen vids of folks saying is vibrating hand and feet at 65MPH, i.e. LOOKS bigger but whines so much, needs another gear, on Freeways--have read the ROYAL ENFIELD loves sitting at 65MPH).

It is attached to the rider.

+revolutionpm The cam is attached to a bracket clamped to the top of the petrol tank, NOT the rider.

+AusRadioHistorian I had just listened to a review that said that the RE vibrated badly at around 50MPH.
      Was interested in buying one.

+revolutionpm Well, the video clips at the start and finish of the clip were taken with the mounting bracket of the GoPro Hero3 clamped to the RE petrol tank. I don't see any "vibration issue", do you? And you must not have seen the clip right through, as Mike shows the way in which the GoPro was clamped to the bike about halfway through the clip.

Thanks mate. This video was intended as just a quick look at Mike's bike after a week of fairly heavy long distance riding. Mike and I are both radio hams and video makers, so the "gadgets" were only a personal interest of ours. The bike seems quite uncomplicated and reliable.

    • @LynxStarAuto
      @LynxStarAuto 9 років тому

Yeah reliable and RE are synonymous. Unrefined, rudimentary, utilitarian, restricted, these words better describe what a RE is. It's a great urban daily commuter. It is not a touring bike.

Lynx Star Automotive Mike has used this one and its predecessors for about 45 years, and used it over the huge distances that a continent like Australia demands, where major cities are 500 miles+ apart. No complaints. Quite workable, good price, simple to fix. No wanky snob value, no huge purchase price. And neither Mike or I are at an age where speed holds ANY great attraction. We're both retired, we like to take in the scenery, and we have the time to do it.
