    Why is the wood brown at the beginning ? Is it stained before carving ?

      Yes, that's my favorite way to do signs - stain and then leave the carved parts the color of the wood. I am so bad at painting inside of the carving area.

    Why do you put the brush in the bag? Does it keep it from drying out before the next time you need to use it?

      Yep! You usually have to use a few coats of poly, so this keeps the brush from drying out before the next coat.
