      No, look at the potential matchups you’d be creating... OSU And LSU would no doubt beat the pac 12 schools by at least 20+ points. Alabama would prolly beat Georgia 20+ points, you’d only be creating 1 meaningful game in penn st vs Clemson, and fun fact James Franklin is a serial choke artist, I wouldn’t be surprised in Clemson won by a lot as well, so what exactly is expanding the playoff doing?

      Andrew Scott the pac 12 schools have really good defenses, they hang with everyone. Ohio state has a bad o line and both Oregon and Utah would get after the quarterback, but i don’t know if they have the offense to beat the top 4 teams. Oregon has just as talented of a team as anyone, they just need to come out playing hard from the get go. Utah’s defense might be the best in the country but their offense is too predictable and they would have a really hard time scoring against a top team.

Clemson will only play one ranked team if Wake Forrest doesn't lose between now and their game AND THEY ALMOST LOST TO AN UNRANKED OPPONENT. LSU has played two ranked teams and has held only two teams to less than 10 points. Vanderbelt scored 38 points against them.

    @12:30 I agree with Klatt. For the casual fans, a ‘bama vs. LSU game in the regular season would mean less over time with an 8-team playoff. Maybe not the first or second year of the 8-team playoff but over time, some of the rivalry games and current “big games” would matter less because 1 and 2 loss teams in Power conferences would still get playoff bids anyway. So the regular season WOULD mean less. Agree with Joel. Although it would give way to out of conference rivalries to take shape via a larger playoff format (i.e. Clemson vs. ‘bama).

  • @limjahey7151
    @limjahey7151 4 роки тому +3

    Look, Joel Klatt is far and away my favorite analyst/commentator in football, but I think hes absolutely wrong about regular season rivalry games meaning nothing in the FBS in the event of an 8 team playoff. I know most people on this thread probably dont follow or care about FCS football, but hear me out if you will: I'm from North Dakota and I'm an NDSU fan. NDSU and South Dakota State are perennially two of the top teams in the FCS and obviously being in the same conference, they play each other every year for the Dakota Marker (the marker is a replica of the one that is actually used to mark the border between the two states). Both of these teams know that on any given year, win or lose, they will both likely still be in the playoffs given the 24 team format. Despite this knowledge, both teams and fanbases make this rivalry one of the best in college football. The games are always thrilling and usually very close, the fans make the atmosphere absolutely electric, and the overall quality of the product on the field year in and year out is top notch. I think the idea of these FBS rivalry games becoming meaningless in an expanded playoff format is completely overblown.

    As always, Joel makes such great points. If there was an 8 team playoff, then we wouldn't care to watch the regular season as much because we're waiting for the 'real games' in the playoffs, similar to nba or cbb or nfl. The games matter but not as much when you're already 'in'. I totally agree with that. 4 teams makes the top four spots so elusive that you need to be excellent, however the problem is teams like bama want to be excellent at wofford. I get Colin saying he would still love to watch Bama-LSU this weekend even if they meet in the playoffs, however, what he doesn't realize is that both teams may not lay everything out on the line this coming weekend if they're already in an 8 team playoff picture.
    The big thing here is that watching the top 8 teams go after it in a sudden death playoff is much more entertaining than playing in the regular season because you can still lose and be in the playoff if you're a more dominant/skilled team, which will keep hard scheduling and looking fine vs dominating in the eye test while playing bad teams.
    Hard to say which is right here. Joel does make great points, but I still want an 8 team playoff. Get more teams in there, make it a sudden death style. The Semi Finals and Finals bring so much hype and excitement, imagine there being twice as much! We just need to find a way to not make two teams in the playoffs (lsu-bama), take this Saturday lightly if they already know they're in. Solution? To get in the 8 spots, both teams (LSU-Bama) need to make this Saturday's game close/not get trampled to stay in that playoff picture.

An automatic bid could result in a huge underdog upsetting the best team and getting in. Automatic bids are a problem if you want the best teams in the playoffs. If you go back to 2014, each year the final top 8 would have made really compelling games. Most were usually 1 loss teams anyways with a few two loss teams, but we’ve had two loss teams win national titles before.
