@Keith Stiltner I agree but there is no reason or excuse for Georgia in this one. They could have easily won that game. They let them off the hook on Defense and Georgia were way too conservative on the offensive side of the ball. I hate it but when you play Bama you will not get many calls and Bama will get away with a lot. A coach has to prepare their players for that.
They are asking why the safety was playing the hashes. Its because Tua was masterful with his eyes and held the safety to the middle of the field. The corner committed a cardinal sin in cover 2 and allowed a free release to the inside. The safety had no chance on that play.
Na'il Christian this is true but there also was clearly no receiver threatening his zone and he had help (the other safety) to side the qbs eyes were taking him... definitely not a horrible play by safety but expect you to do better in the national championship game. More concerned with them not being in quarters or something of the sort on 2nd and 25
Na'il Christian, Ya, was surprising that Klatt didn't mention Tua using his eyes to move the Safety on that. I wish they did more of this play analysis for NFL and even basketball. I'm sure there are a lot of ex players who know a lot about the game, but there is probably more that don't and this makes fans understand concepts and strategy.
As a safety your responsibility is to read the receivers then the QB’s eyes so he should’ve seen the vertical threat to his own side before looking at the open space that was attacking his other side (no receivers were attacking his inside zone)
people also forget that alabama didnt need a touchdown, just a field goal therefore the safety wouldn't just go standing in the end-zone. they had a great chance to hold them , hence the reason they were playing off. also, that was a perfect throw, and good throws beat good defense every day of the week
I knew this would happen. I predicted before the playoffs this would happen. I said, "What are you going to do when Alabama is in there every year and one day there is an SEC vs SEC matchup? You'll whine and demand to go to 8 game playoff." And I was exactly right.
Couldn’t agree more with Joel. I like it how it is. Another Problem with going to 8 is as soon as you clinch your side of the division you could start resting guys until the conference championship game knowing that if you win you’ll be in the playoffs. Keep it like it is.
keith green problem with that complaint is Auburn clinched last week of the regular season, as did OSU as did USC as did Stanford as did OU as did TCU. There’s over half the power 5 division champs that your argument doesn’t suit.
Buckeye Derrick I’m not saying it’s going to suit every situation but it is going to happen. Clemson clinched really early their side of the division this year. The bottom line is I want to see the best football teams in. I don’t want to see a three loss conference champion in the playoffs just because they won a conference title.
keith green so you wouldn’t have been ok with auburn in over Bama even though they beat Bama and played another final 4 team close early in the season? What conference had a 3 loss champ this year? Or any year in the playoff era for that matter?
If you expand to eight then the 9-12 teams will have a gripe about not getting in. In college basketball there is outrage from the 69-73 teams about not getting in the "March Madness" tournament.
As an Atlanta Falcons fan I wish that the NFL had college overtime rules so that the Falcons would have had a shot in the Super Bowl because right after the coin toss I knew it was over.
to klatts point, a pac 12 team can play .500 all year and end up seeded 6 one day and running the whole thing only for a story but makes half a season meaningless instantly. out of conference has to mean something under this or any ranking system you put in unless you switch to a nfl stlye schedule. but the schools are independently able to be soft or softer schedulers based on their best interest. we cant knock the logic when it makes sense
Drew Andrews but if there’s a conference that has that bad of a year you don’t have to put in their champ he seems to Imply that it would mean the conference champ would have to go which isn’t the case at all look 2 years ago where osu went over penn state the committee still will pick the teams but it allows for all the conference winners to get in if they deserve it
Coach Saban has 6 titles overall, and has won 5 consensus national titles in 9 years. The last time a college did this was Yale from 1887 to 1894. Coach Saban has led Alabama to the greatest college football dynasty of all time. Best of all, this unbelievable winning streak is not over. Roll Tide.
I was thinking the same thing that Klatt said about UGA being conservative in OT. Most of the game they were in 3x1, 2x2, n bunch formations (although they do run a lot of sweeps out of bunch formations) then in OT they went into power formations and Bama was ready for that. Very surprising.
All you have to do is give guaranteed bids to the Power 5 conference champs with 3 Wild Card Teams. This year you would have added Ohio State and USC guaranteed plus Alabama, UCF, and one other team would be Wild Cards. A committee would pick the Wild Cards and the #1-8 seed order.
Klatt is 100% right. College football is unique because the regular season IS the playoffs. Every week is stressful. As an OU fan, losing to Iowa St. was devastating. And the win against Ohio St. was thrilling.
If expansion is inevitable, a 6 team playoff would be the way to go imo. Prioritizes top teams (1 and 2 get byes), while having flexibility to add those 1-2 loss teams that have a strong case for the playoff. 8 or more teams start to devalue the regular season and even conference championships to an extent. Take the top 6 overall, no automatic bids.
2 of the 4 National Champs of the CFP era have been 4th seeds, Ohio State in the first year (2014-15) and Bama this year. I would love a 6 team playoff with the first 2 seeds getting a bye and 3 v 6 and 4 v 5. 1 v (4 or 5) and 2 v (3 or 6) and the winners in the Naty.
I like Joel Klatt and Colin talking because they bring opposing, but good points of view. As to the 8 team playoff, I think it will go to 6 first. College football has been around over a 100 years, and has been evolving over time. Way back in the day it was Army and Notre Dame and even Harvard. Then other schools fought for acceptance like USC, Ohio State and Alabama. As things grow, parity gets better so we'll eventually get there. The 'need' seems to become apparent before the system can adapt change. But I absolutely agree that I don't want to lose the full season importance, that's what makes CF so special.
“Now you have to play a conference championship that Pete didn’t!” Hm, I don’t seem to remember Alabama playing a conference championship game this year.
Is this a Trick Question?? OF COURSE Saban is the G O A T !! 5 Titles in 9 Years!!! I Can't believe I'm saying this but he is Better than Bear Bryant even!!! ROLL TIDE ROLL FOREVER!!
PeaceFan1 Saban is great but it was a different time, Bama can recruit just based on their instagram page the bear was going to people's homes and Notre dame was a force then.
Hill Co. Bro bear had unlimited scollys and he always took the best players even if he knew they wouldn't play lol. Saban has done this with only 85 scollys and with more parity in the game than ever before. He is the GOAT !!!
have power 5 conference champions get in, best group of 5 team, 2 wild card slots to the best teams remaining. Wild Card slots make every game matter and it can also matter for seeding purposes (to get easier games early in the bracket so early season still matters)
I'm still watching the AD for this video and I call already tell you an 8-team playoff is just the same amount of controversy as four. The only way to eliminate the controversy is to have a 16 team playoff where every conference champion gets in with the remaining slots based on polls. Nobody can complain the didn't get in despite winning their conference.
I remember when they talked 2 years ago about Nick Saban's decline as a coach.... I knew they were wrong then. It's great to hear them admit their error in judgement. Kudos
The same reason I love cfb more then any other sport because of the value of the regular season, the system can be tweaked, but do not expand and do not have automatic bids for anything
why did Alabama win? because they were playing UGA....and we all know UGA is known for choking...they blamed Richt, ran him out of town and they still choked....it wasn't Richt, it was YOU!!!!
Fidel Cashflow That's a fallacy. Players who go to Georgia aren't just immediately cursed with being prone to choking. The Chiefs choke because Andy Reid chokes. What you're saying is purely speculation and superstition.
Fidel Cashflow Sometimes people mistake one team choking for the other team making adjustments and playing better in the second half. If a team plays really well in the first half, and the other plays really poorly, but corrects their mistakes, and executes better on both sides of the ball, and has the better second half and just wins the game by being the better team down the stretch, is that still the other team choking? If Floyd Mayweather is down on the scorecards after 6 rounds, and then, as he always does, makes adjustments based on tendencies or things his opponent is doing, and as a result is the better fighter down the stretch, is that his opponent choking, or Mayweather just being the better fighter? Again, you present a fallacious argument, now some teams do choke a lot, but a lot of times a team just being better down the stretch is mistaken for the other team choking.
The Greatest so the bulldogs not giving Sony Michel the ball In the second half is alabama making adjustments or is that UGA panicking (choking)? It was evident that alabama couldn't stop Michel, soooooo why didnt they run him? Why did they start running reverses and Chubb and running the wildcat all of a sudden??? Oh because they panicked....the only adjustment alabama made was benching a QB who couldn't throw for one who could....the new QB gave Alabama's defense a breather....that's it....UGA CHOKED! Bad anology using Floyd because hes never been down after 6 rounds in any fight....
Colin's got a point. The way it is now is basically Bama, Clemson, Ohio State almost always in the top 4. An 8 team playoff would be way more interesting. Make it a bit more like the NFL. That way there's no doubt that the best teams in the country get a shot. Too many teams get only one loss. Four is wayyy two few for a playoff when there's so many more teams that have championship talent and drive.
Respect to college players , they earn so much money for their schools. I believe that the fact that they don't get paid makes the game more exciting . They have more hunger and love without millions of dollars being involved.
I agree 100% with Joel KlatT. 8 Team Playoff would Make Conference Champions Automatic Bid and I don't want to see a Conference Champion with 3 Losses in Playoff. I like having the 4 Best Teams with No Conference Champion required. Conference Champions should be a tie breaker not an Automatic.
Joel, the CFP has said it will put in 4 teams from one confrence if they are the best 4. So yes, conference titles are not the end all nor should they be. You and everyone else should agree the 4 best teams period. They got it right.
there has to be a way for mid majors to get into playoffs, at four teams it guarantees that only the power 5 plays for the title. he's talking about reg.season but only mentions the power5. what about everyone else's regular season mattering.
And that's why there needs to be a 6 or 10 team playoff. Give all the conference champions a de facto automatic bid (you COULD be left out, but not too likely) AND give the top 2 teams a bye in the first round that's played on the higher seed's campus. Then there's more incentive than to just get in the playoffs. You want that bye.
The playoff is fine the way it is and it seems to only be getting more of the best teams each year. Regular season games are as important as they’ll ever be with the 4 team system
Why not with the 8 team play off have the conference champions get in, then have 3 wild cards... then the out of conference games matter and so does everything for the wild card teams.... I don't get the argument that Joe Klatt is making?
When they go to 8 teams then teams 9 & 10 will be crying to get in and so on and so on and so on. The next 2 teams will always say why not me. The more teams that are added the more it will diminish the regular season. Look at what adding teams has done to men's college basketball, the regular season is practically meaningless, everybody with a .500 record gets in it seems. Here is a scenario, imagine Ohio State & Michigan (or whatever rivalry you want to think of here) playing at the end of the year, both teams ranked in the top 5 and the head coaches for both teams decide to sit some starters because they know win or lose they will get in the playoffs. Yeah it could happen. But to ease your frustration on this matter only know this, it will expand someday not sure when but it will. How do I know because the NCAA runs the show and they are all about money and adding more teams means more $$$ so it will happen!
Exactly right. Klatt's argument makes no sense. 8 teams means conference championships matter again. If we had 8 teams this year: clemson, oklahoma, USC, ohio state, georgia. 3 wild card teams: alabama, UCF... auburn? The playoffs would have been immeasurably more interesting.
The Georgia safety never thought Tua could get the ball to Thompson before he could over the top. Tua being left handed allowed him to throw to his left quicker than a right handed qb. A right handed qb would have had to reset his feet then throw. This would allow the safety more time to react.
I get Joel's point about non-conference games getting lessened, but I don't think it's true. The chance of a team going undefeated is slim for any team, and if a team cannot win their conference, then the previous rules of strength of schedule, quality wins, and pedigree still apply. There are still 3 (really 2 assuming a undefeated G5 team) spots for the non conference-champions, so all the stakes still apply. Sure a team could lose every non-conference game and win their conference, but I don't think a team that would lose to a weak team like Troy or Mercer or Rice could win their conference to begin with anyways. A 8 team playoff or at least a 6 team playoff would solve any controversy. The sure-fire way to get in is a conference championship, and then there still would be spots available for the next most talented teams. Sure there might be arguments about those last spots as well, but the fact remains every team at the start of the season, no matter how bad or how unknown they are, if they win out and/or win their conference, they're in.
kal_vin I agree with all of this but I’d go a step further and eliminate all divisions in conferences, balance the schedules, and then take the top 2 teams from the conference for the conference championship game
Michael Layman agree the divisions in conferences is the problem the Big 12 takes the top 2 teams even if they played during the regular season that’s why we had a TCU Vs Oklahoma rematch in the big 12 championship game and doesn’t that conference have everyone play everyone in the conference which is the way I think it should be Wisconsin benefited from not playing most of the strong big 10 teams this year and got exposed in the championship game
Why does there have to be any automatic bids in an 8 team playoff? Why can’t the committee just decide the 8 best teams in the country like they do now?
5 team playoff. Each conference champ goes. The regular season would still matter because the conference games would decide who wins the conference title. The committee can seed the teams and use the OOC games so they would still be relevant. SEC can continue to play 8 game conference schedule and host one FCS school. Problems solved. 4 vs 5 in mid December 1 vs 4/5 semifinal 2 vs 3 semifinal
College football now is starting to overshadow The NFL. These players deserve compensation . These games are making super bowl type money these days and by not paying these athletes is sports slavery. . All of the sports analyst have jobs because of young college players.
From a soccer fan to another soccer fan Colin - I don't think we should have World Cup qualifying anymore because that renders the friendlies and FIFA world rankings meaningless. I'm not interested in rewarding a mediocre Iceland or Panama team with a shot to play with the Argentinas and Brazils of the world.
I understand why Joel supports the four team playoff but he ruined his case when he started making comparisons with March Madness. That is an unfair comparison because college football has less teams and less games making regular season games more important. Also, its not like making an eight team playoff would mean that bad teams get in.
What did you think about Alabama’s comeback win?
The Herd with Colin Cowherd
I think the refs helped them out a lotttttt
What happens to the independents????
@Keith Stiltner
I agree but there is no reason or excuse for Georgia in this one. They could have easily won that game. They let them off the hook on Defense and Georgia were way too conservative on the offensive side of the ball. I hate it but when you play Bama you will not get many calls and Bama will get away with a lot. A coach has to prepare their players for that.
Don't know didn't watch the game
I don't watch MNC where the teams rankings include 4 loss Auburn, whom could not beat a mid major in their bowl game.
Lmao Colin calls every small mobile quarterback Russell Wilson😂
it's painful to listen to cowturd. he is so damn stupid about football. this guy is the product of fantasy football.
kyle stewart and yet here you are, watching his show.
Tua is 6'1 218 lbs.
Derick Baker anything under 6’4 6’3 is undersized
Russell Wilson is 5'9 which is who I was referring to. And 6'1 218 lbs is not undersized
“This kid is Russell Wilson” 😂
Keith Jones yeah he gonna be with a gold digger
according to colin.. hes always said everything..
I've always said he says that.
How in the Gigh Gigh... Colin did you have an annurism 😂
Annurism?
He was trying to say Giggity
Lmao he said “my audience is dumb”
HOOHOO glad I'm not the only one that heard that lol
Hahaha that’s typical with sportscasters man. Just when Joel was going into the nuts and bolts, Colin starts cutting him off,
After reading your comment, I watched the whole video once again to spot it. To be fair on him he said that he is dumb too :D
We are lol
LOOOOOOL
They are asking why the safety was playing the hashes. Its because Tua was masterful with his eyes and held the safety to the middle of the field. The corner committed a cardinal sin in cover 2 and allowed a free release to the inside. The safety had no chance on that play.

Klatt actually just talked me out of the 8-team Playoff. Love his thoughts on the unattended consequences. He makes Colin sound like an idiot.

Not really nobody really thinks they have a chance unlike the 5th or 6th team.
Joel Klatt is spot on
As an Atlanta Falcons fan I wish that the NFL had college overtime rules so that the Falcons would have had a shot in the Super Bowl because right after the coin toss I knew it was over.

Doesn't matter what kind of record you have, if you win your conference you should be able to compete for the national championship
3:09 "Now you have to play a conference championship that Pete didn't!"
About that...
It's not like USC wouldn't have won that Pac 12 title game
I think he’s saying it’s ironic that Bama didn’t have to play in their conference championship to win a natty
Selvan Jones that happened in 2011 with LSU
Coach Saban has 6 titles overall, and has won 5 consensus national titles in 9 years. The last time a college did this was Yale from 1887 to 1894. Coach Saban has led Alabama to the greatest college football dynasty of all time. Best of all, this unbelievable winning streak is not over. Roll Tide.

So good to see these guys eating that crow! There is some humility there is admitting they were wrong. I commend them both.
Klatt: this kid threw an absolute dart
Cowheard: THIS KID IS RUSSEL WILSON!!!!!!!
Joel Klatt is right he changed my mind on expanding the playoff
All you have to do is give guaranteed bids to the Power 5 conference champs with 3 Wild Card Teams. This year you would have added Ohio State and USC guaranteed plus Alabama, UCF, and one other team would be Wild Cards. A committee would pick the Wild Cards and the #1-8 seed order.
Michael White I like that
This is exactly what is needed
Or do 6 teams give top 2 a bye.. 5 condo champs & 1 wild card
Conference*
Nick wright is that you ?
Dude, it was a tough throw.
Klatt is 100% right. College football is unique because the regular season IS the playoffs. Every week is stressful. As an OU fan, losing to Iowa St. was devastating. And the win against Ohio St. was thrilling.

Joel Klatt once again proving he is the voice of reason of college football
That was such an entertaining game.
I love Colin‼️
“Now you have to play a conference championship that Pete didn’t!”
Hm, I don’t seem to remember Alabama playing a conference championship game this year.
What about the extra playoff game?
Hawker Walks yes, pete did not have to do that
True
Do you seem to remember them winning the Championship???
i dont remember OH3IO playing a conference championship last year
Is this a Trick Question?? OF COURSE Saban is the G O A T !! 5 Titles in 9 Years!!! I Can't believe I'm saying this but he is Better than Bear Bryant even!!! ROLL TIDE ROLL FOREVER!!

4 playoff teams is perfect. Makes the regular season matter. I’m fine with arguing the last team to make it ie Penn State or Ohio State
i do agree college ot is way better than NFL ot it way more exciting then oh the first team score a td game over.
Definitely. NFL should do the same thing as college except start at the 35
No. Terrible idea
6:30

he said I don't want to take away from that little run, calling it a little run, is taking away
I agree with Joel if the playoffs expand then the regular season may be less important and less competitive
You can watch this 100 times and not know if they are arguing FOR or AGAINST expanding the playoff
I remember when they talked 2 years ago about Nick Saban's decline as a coach.... I knew they were wrong then. It's great to hear them admit their error in judgement.

The same reason I love cfb more then any other sport because of the value of the regular season, the system can be tweaked, but do not expand and do not have automatic bids for anything
Congrats to Alabama for winning runner up last night.
#UCFismyChamp
Coach saban, best in college football.

I always felt that he thought the people that watch are stupid. He brushed it off but, he REALLY meant it

I’m gonna miss Joel klatt and college football

Lincoln Riley is a storm . And it's brewing in Norman right now.
Respect to college players , they earn so much money for their schools. I believe that the fact that they don't get paid makes the game more exciting . They have more hunger and love without millions of dollars being involved.
I agree with Joe klatt. If conference winners go then. It makes the regular season more inportant.
"My audience is dumb".. damn Colin I agree with you all the time lol
Never even thought about that meaningless regular seasons game thing. Joel is smart I love him
I Loved Joel Klatt dissecting that play. Only Troy Aikman, Shannon Sharpe, and a few others really do.
Klatt is always right
Joel Klatt finally said something that made sense
Non conference games still would matter for Wild Card contenders to get leverage on each other with a better resume
Joel Klatt and Chris BrousGOAT are co-MVPs of Fox Sports
Can someone explain to me how college play off works i just can't get it, it sounds too complicate
I swear they were in cover 4. Both safeties were on the hash and the opposite corner was on top of his receiver
They’re going to name a stadium after Nick Saban
Joel, the CFP has said it will put in 4 teams from one confrence if they are the best 4. So yes, conference titles are not the end all nor should they be. You and everyone else should agree the 4 best teams period. They got it right.
there has to be a way for mid majors to get into playoffs, at four teams it guarantees that only the power 5 plays for the title. he's talking about reg.season but only mentions the power5. what about everyone else's regular season mattering.
Saban = 🐐
The greatest of all time
Big Daddy 28 Kristine
And that's why there needs to be a 6 or 10 team playoff.
Give all the conference champions a de facto automatic bid (you COULD be left out, but not too likely) AND give the top 2 teams a bye in the first round that's played on the higher seed's campus.
Then there's more incentive than to just get in the playoffs. You want that bye.
It's not Sabans coordinators winning these titles.......it's them doing what Saban WANTS! PERIOD!!!
Committee determines the best 8. No automatic bids. Solved both problems.
My brother used to block for Joel at CU Lol weird to see him on tv now
The playoff is fine the way it is and it seems to only be getting more of the best teams each year.
6 teams, top 2 a bye. 5 conf champs & 1 wild card. just add 2 more teams and every reg game still relevant.
In an 8 team playoff, even the number 4 seed team can lose the last game of regular season and get in. So bama/ Auburn becomes meaningless. Pathetic..
Bama/Auburn was meaningless this season
They ran the same type play on both 1st and 2nd down snd smitty was wide open both times
7:05 false, Pat McAfee jerseys are popular at Lucas Oil!
Colin is absolutely right
Nic Haynes not
The Georgia safety never thought Tua could get the ball to Thompson before he could over the top.
I think pete knew he was leaving and thats why the program started to sink...
Cliff Paul The program was already beginning to sink before Jim harbaugh left and chip kelly rise
5 team playoff. Each conference champ goes. The regular season would still matter because the conference games would decide who wins the conference title. The committee can seed the teams and use the OOC games so they would still be relevant. SEC can continue to play 8 game conference schedule and host one FCS school. Problems solved.
4 vs 5 in mid December
1 vs 4/5 semifinal
2 vs 3 semifinal
College football now is starting to overshadow The NFL. These players deserve compensation . These games are making super bowl type money these days and by not paying these athletes is sports slavery. . All of the sports analyst have jobs because of young college players.
Is there supposed to be video or just audio?
Colin is right here again need to expand
This is funny because several months ago Colin was saying why expanding to 8 teams was a bad idea. He used fast food as a metaphor.
You have over 60 teams in the basketball playoffs. Why not have the top 10 ranked teams plus 2 wild cards fight it out?
Agree with Cowherd
Alabama was saved by the island boy, Tua. No shocker. Don’t underestimate us. Shoots brah 🤙🏽
Yes Coach Saban is the Greatest College Coach of all time. He has finally past Bear Bryant with win tonight.
I agree with Joel. Expanding it to 8 team will actually make the regular season useless. Just win the conference and you're in. I don't like that
I wouldn't mind seeing a 5 team playoff. #4 and #5 play for the 4 seed.
What is overtime...
Because sounds influence a lot.
Hasn't Klatt done a complete 180 now?
I understand why Joel supports the four team playoff but he ruined his case when he started making comparisons with March Madness. That is an unfair comparison because college football has less teams and less games making regular season games more important. Also, its not like making an eight team playoff would mean that bad teams get in.
Would it be possible to realign ALL college football teams? similiar to the NFL
Every conference deserves a chance at the national title.
Give Klatt his own show or stop talking over him when you bring him on. You've only got him 1 segment, shut up and let him drop knowledge.
When we get to an 8 team playoff people will be mad about #9 not getting in, which will bring the argument for a bigger playoff
love Colin's wild eyes at 10:42
