Hey everyone - thanks for all the support! A NEW video of us playing another fast tune will be posted tomorrow - stay tuned and be sure to watch that one! It's even more ridiculous than this one.
Some hot jazz going on here. cheers to both of you! Next up,Middle school student with Giant steps at 1000 bpm played completely with multiphonics please
Whenever I start to get a little full of myself in my high school band, I just watch this to remind myself that I've still got a LONG way to go lol, very humbling.
I think this video is about inspiration from teacher to student..!!..because my old h.s. teacher inspire me after 10 yrs I went back to playing the sax as a hobby..now 28..yrs..
Congratulations to you and your student! He sounds like John coltrane with an alto sax. I hope you do great things in the future, worthing blues and jazz music. Nice job teacher!
Me at first: Damn, that kid is shredding, I think he's overcome the teacher at that point, which means he was a good teacher if the student passes him. when the teacher starts playing. Me:......
Haha yep! And remember this is just a video from a lesson I was giving him...we record A LOT and I wasn't specifically planning on posting anything. There have been HUNDREDS of times we've solo'd back and forth like this!
Damn you guys sound amazing. It was funny to watch the student’s face whenever you played out haha. And the smooth lick at the end 😂😂! Hey Dave, if you could estimate how many solos you have transcribed (as in solos you’ve played whether by ear or if you written them down and played them), how much would it be? Very curious!
@@DavePollack I think you've been asked this before, but it would be cool if you did a video on how you get your ideas for improvising since you've said you don't transcribe a lot
Dave Pollack wow! Okay, what about this. If you could estimate, how many lines would you say you have transcribed that weren’t your own lines and took through the keys?
I've definitely taken a bunch of small ideas/lines and worked through them...not sure how many! I feel like I've forgotten a lot of the stuff I learned years ago, so I end up playing new things out of necessity. Nowadays the only "practicing" I actually do is learning tunes for gigs/recording sessions, but playing everyday on either a performance or with my students really gets me thinking of new ideas to implement.
I watched the first 20 seconds then turned it off to go practice. Thank God I still have 2 more years of high school so hopefully I can be half as good as he is
@@DavePollack oh trust me I have. I upgraded my setup for my birthday in early February and I've been practicing between 4 and 6 hours a day including what I do in school. It's an amazing feeling when you get on stage and rip through a solo that people actually enjoy hearing. And I'm gonna keep chasing the high I get from performing as long as I can.
I'm hearing all these false fingerings and I really want to get into that sound of things. What's a good way to learn these fingerings and work these into my improvisation?
They're all an octave + a fifth up on overtones (the 2nd overtone). Say you're playing an upper A, you could go back and forth between that and add RH123. Say you're playing a middle F, you could finger the low Bb and get an F and go back and forth. High Bb with overtone on low Eb, high b with overtone on E. Then some of the others like high C, you could put finger the G back and forth to change the timbre. Chris Potter, Brecker, Joel Frahm use these false fingerings a lot.
Wow ! All I can add is get Audio- Visual department to stop by and set up your camera to include the Saxophones in the video and a lot less ceiling..Man you guys blast those notes out like crazy fast...
Hahaha, I record a lot of his lessons just to listen back for critique- wasn’t planning on posting any of it! Watch my other videos for good camera/editing/audio work ;)
I threw my saxophone across the room because I gave up after listening to this.... then I ran to the other side to catch it because I feel miiggggghhht still have a change if I practice more..
Me: 46 days into playing Sax again after 19 years of not playing(and thinking im doing okay) Me: Hears this amzing high school musician shredding on sax Me: Putting my saxophone away in defeat Well played by both, and I was thinking to myself, has this student surpassed his master? Then...Dave, played!!!!!
Joey Porth listen to all the greats like buddy rich and Art Blakey etc and take what you like from them and then figure out your own style, just listen to jazz consistently and practice it all the time, if you do that you’ll have no choice but to get better. The most important thing is ALWAYS FEEL THE MUSIC, don’t just play it or try to imitate someone else 👌🏾
Dave Pollack Yes! I am applying to SUNY Purchase, hopefully i get in, but wherever i go i’m going to pursue music. I actually have my Conference All State audition tomorrow!
Hi, I'm a classical musician, but I want to start in jazz. Can you tell me how I could study with you? Really amazing the language and the way to improvise ! Regards
Man, I need to work on my Bebop vocabulary... I also need to work on my _actual_ vocabulary for the SATs. That's probably more pressing, at the moment, actually.
Thanks! I don't know where you're currently at improvisation-wise, but knowledge of chords inside-out is a must. Also knowledge of chord substitutions, traditional and non-traditional phrasing, as well as LISTENING LISTENING LISTENING to the greats will help you learn this language.
Hey Dave! I was wondering what type of sax mic I should get? I just started doing Jazz Improv and I don't have that great of a mic. I am in 10th grade. If you could give me a suggestion that would be great. I also have a video on my channel of me doing blues if you could give tips on that
I would definitely need to know your budget first- there are lots of different mics and different price points. Also, do you have an audio interface to plug an xlr into? If not, you’ll have to go with a usb mic. (Unless you’re asking about a mic for live situations and not recording)

Give a scholarship please. Hahaha
Picks up sax to practice

Puts sax back into case
Hahah!

UltraMagnus3786 hard mood right there
We need the Dave pollack high school musician 12 step practice plan to success... you should be really proud of the monster you’ve created
I do have that - step 1 is email me for online lessons! (and thank you!)
Love his use of alternate fingerings and false fingerings to get different sounds! Sounds so hip!
Me too! He's been working a lot on playing more out and experimenting with different sounds.
3:35 HE WON THE AWARD OF THE BEST STANK FACES 😂😂
Hahah!!
Some hot jazz going on here. cheers to both of you!
Next up,Middle school student with Giant steps at 1000 bpm played completely with multiphonics please
You got it
Hahaha
Lmao I’m crying 😂
One thing I love about this video is watching Dave's response especially when he visually looks like Simon is playing his best!
Whenever I start to get a little full of myself in my high school band, I just watch this to remind myself that I've still got a LONG way to go lol, very humbling.
We’re all on our own journey! Glad you dig it though.
This student has a great ear...manages well to play outside the box!
He's got that booming unique Kenny Garret tone, but very much played in his own way
3:37 When you here a nasty lick
I like how you actually played the changes
Agreed, if we're playing a blues, wow me with how well you can play out the changes, not how "out" you can be
3:27 That b9 made him smile
I’m in 7th grade and this inspires me, keep up the good work bro
Lil Fish don’t ever lose that drive
If you actually practice and follow the book you can easily turn out like this easily by like freshmen.
Skippy Dinglechalks yes exactly
Update: I am now the the best saxophone in my middle school. Still making progress on arpeggios and tounging correctly. But so far I’m doing great!
@@ronnyastudillo4203 Congrats dude.
This kid has a nice vocabulary too. He is melodic and harmonic, more impoortnt to me than fast. Good job.
Yup! The funny thing is he didn't even love his solo that much on this!

Wooooooow!!! Really awesome. Congratulations Teacher..... And of course, Student! Good job

Didn’t sound like he was really groovin it and getting into it but the note creativity and rythym creativity was awesome!
Wasn't getting into it??

First solo reminds me of James Spaulding on "to kill a brick" by woody shaw
Nothing to say... You two are excellent musicians! Fast tempo but phrases full of musical meaning... Chapeau

Brilliant phrases and some very funny stank faces hahaha
Hahahaha yep - thanks!

Wow. I love his (the high schooler) tone. The ideas he has makes him sound like the modern John Coltrane. He’s insane.

Side note your arpeggios are great, I'm working on getting that clarity with mine (current sophomore in college for music ed)
