No kidding, I learned more from this lesson than I have in 1033 days in a row of Duo Lingo! Learning the why instead of purely trying to memorize has flipped a switch for me! Thank you and keep up the great videos!
I think you'll like this course, Heather. You will still be able to incorporate the vocabulary that you learned from the app.
I can say the same although I had “only” 436 days in a row! 😉
Duolingo is for people who know badic Spanish i think, this kind of stuff you learn in hs Spanish
I've used Duolingo for 5 years for French, Spanish and Japanese! It's a good app for building vocabulary, but it's not good if you're trying to become fluent in speaking! In Duolingo, I get frustrated when I type out a 15 word answer and get it wrong, because I forgot an "s" in one of the words... I mean, in conversation, nobody cares if you've forgotten a single letter lol.
The trick with Duolingo is it doesn't stand by itself. For me I'm doing the following:
1) Duolingo, I got a paid subscription and do it quite regularly.
2) Using @Spanish with Qroo Paul (this channel) to understand theory, this video is great and I'm going to work through the whole series.
3) Also in youtube, studying the alphabet, numbers, telling time.
4) I got a tutor.
5) Starting to watch youtube videos that are in Spanish.
6) Learning the lyrics of spanish songs I happen to like (I'm into salsa dancing).
7) Soon I'll be practicing face to face at meetups...
This is possibly the best video I have ever seen to teach Spanish.
OMG, as someone who has studied Spanish for 5 years (through apps, websites, UA-cam), I think I've learned more core basics in this 36 minutes! Thank you so much!
Glad to hear that!
Thank you ❤
Mee too!
This is fantastic!!!!
You should be very proud of what you’ve created here. I’m sure our brains are all wired differently and receive information differently but this is the single-most effective instruction to Spanish learning I’ve ever seen. Really excited to dive into more.
This is the absolute best!!! Why don’t they start out teaching this everywhere!
WOW! I am age 73 and your lesson have help me by improving my Spanish by 80% within 36 minutes! Thank you for your very informative and enlightening video! Gracias a ti. ASE!
Happy to help!
Having “studied” Spanish off and on since I was in third grade, ( a hundred years ago, lol ), your lessons have taught me more than 360 days straight of Duolingo and as I’m getting ready for my 3rd trip to Ecuador soon, there are proving to be priceless…also, as a former Deputy Sheriff myself, Thankyou also for your service!
Despite having a number of years of Spanish I picked up on a few tidbits. The bigger picture you present is to look for commonalities and patterns. I love learning Spanish because for me it's like a puzzle. I enjoy the challenge of figuring out how the sentence fits together in context. I believe there is a certain amount of memorizing and learning proper grammar required (typical language teachers focus on this aspect). I've never been taught Spanish by a native english speaker. The fact that you have on the ground experience is a huge benefit. Thanks for your efforts.
Thanks for watching, Rosemary. These early lessons will be a bit too basic for you at your level; however, I will be working in the subjunctive and more difficult constructions by lesson 10 or so.
@@QrooSpanishwonderful instruction; thank you! Please help us to understand when preocuparse gets changed around to se preocupa, or me levanto to levantarme. Gracias!
I love how your mind thinks and how you explain this! It’s MAGIC! Thank you
Wow, thank you!
Excellent! I love the way you have organized things and explain them. You give us English speakers what we need to know. Thank you!
Thanks, Rick. I failed at learning Spanish until I started comparing it to my English. That changed everything and I became conversational quickly and later reached fluency. As a result, that's how I teach it now. I should have the third lesson out tomorrow.
So far, this is the most underrated course on any topic on the internet! Thank you so much; this cleared up a lot of things for me! ¡Muchas gracias!
Wow, thanks!
Thanks thanks thanks! Please do not discontinue the lessons, they are awesome.
Great to see this video back on ! Thanks
This chap is the best I’ve had a few Spanish lesson but his method is the best.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you are enjoying the lessons :-)
Hi Paul. I paid for a course that convinced me to ' acquire' the language through story reading. I have done a lot of that, reading the story, listening to the story, reading and listening at the same time. It has its benefits, developing an ear for the language. However, I just thought there was something missing. They focus little on the grammar. Discovering you on youtube was the missing link I have been looking for! Thanks. You are a heck of a guy.
FYI, this course was recommended in a book called 'The Move To Mexico Bible'.
I didn't know that. Thanks for letting me know.
You are really a wonderful teacher - understanding extremely well how to teach adults. Your breakdown of Spanish - English makes learning the language quite fun for quick success.
Thank you so much. :)
I am so grateful to have found your channel! I have tried to learn Spanish so many times, but the grammar drills and memorization with no context... well, has not worked out so well! And I just moved to Ecuador on a tight budget (tutor unlikely!), your "tricks" and way of teaching are such a relief for me. Muchas gracias!
Happy to help. Enjoy Ecuador. :)
I agree absolutely with your comments- I have been learning Russian in a similar way (contextual) because at age 60, memorising just doesn’t work for me. Today is day 1 of learning Spanish from absolutely nothing and your approach is excellent. THANK YOU 🙏
I think you need to continue teaching. This is the best course around. Maybe it just took time to take off? Keep making the courses!! Good job.
El algoritmo es amable porque por fin estas recibiendo el reconocimiento que mereces. De verdad es uno de los mejores maestros que he encontrado en UA-cam.
Gracias :)
raro es que el algoritmo traiga a latinos
By the end of this video we should be able to translate this comment. If not, we weren’t paying attention enough 😜
First I have to say you are doing a great job to help English speakers to learn Spanish, sometimes it is an advantage to come from own experience as a learner than from university with an academic approach to teach people.
At the age of 65 I started to learn Spanish just for fun. One of the first things I discovered were the many similarities between English and Spanish. Even for a German native, it makes absolute sense to learn Spanish from English instead of learning from German. Only when it comes to pronunciation it is an advantage to be a German native speaker, we use a lot of similar sounds like the Spanish and even the pronunciation rules are often similar, even when the writings are different.
Beside the similarities for the endings .. al and the change from ..tion to ..ción I discovered another one, the change form ..ty to ..dad for many words like society->sociedad, university->universidad and another good thing is, the ..dad endings like the ..ción endings are always female, "La conversación en la universidad era muy formal."
Thanks for the sharing! This is a good tip
Although I've been learning Spanish for over five years, and have been living in Mexico for almost four, this video was an excellent refresher, thanks Paul - Anne
Thanks for watching, Anne. These lessons will be getting progressively more complex.
I keep coming back to this series after being state side for very long because I my opportunities to speak Spanish with anyone over here are minimal and I feel clumsy trying.. Just want to say I appreciate you leaving this series up as it's great!! Gracias!
I'm glad you like it! Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback.
Hola, Am just learning Spanish for the first time in my life, am happy isaw this video first because it has built my interests. Muchas gracias 🙏
I cannot believe they were not popular, they are so very well done. We are enjoying them as a predecessor to a mission trip to Maneadero, Baja.
I also can't believe they were not very popular. Then again, I have noticed that his main channel has gone the way of the Kinetic Kennons, where everything seems to be some kind of endorsement or outright sponsorship. I used to trust his videos completely, but now I take them all with a grain of salt.
I’ve never understood the problem people have with sponsored videos. The creators provide this information to you for free, in large part. But, they need to make a living just like you are. If you’ve only been watching Paul’s videos for a short time, and you’re skeptical about sponsored videos (welcome to social media!) then maybe you haven’t come to know him and to trust that what he’s recommending is well thought out and is what he believes in. But if like me, you’ve been watching him for a long time, then that’s a harsh judgment.
VA CON DIOS E CON SR. QROO
This course an incredible easy course. It surprises me how fast I felt good and progresive in learning Spanish. So grateful I found you.
So glad to hear that. You made my day. :)
Love your approach!! I'm excited to learn because I've finally found a good teacher!
Great stuff!
Well done, Paul. Thank you so much. You are a very talented hombre !
Thanks for watching Phil. I am excited about this project. I think you will enjoy the future videos as well.
After living for 7 years in Central and South America, I was finally learning Spanish from your first 2 videos. Can't wait to finish the rest. And I hope by that time, you have come to your senses and published Episode 8!
That's great to hear!
Yes, i couldn't agree more!!! Loving this 🙂
Holy Mackerel, you have lived in Spanish speaking countries for 7 years and it took these videos for you to start learning Spanish?
😊🎉caramba! Não consigo acreditar que este professor seja americano com essa fluência e sotaque mais que perfeito em Espanôl😮😮😮😮😮 estou aprendendo muito !
Muchas gracias 🇧🇷
@@danielsmith2447Must not be assimilating much if that’s the case
Sir, you are a wonderful Spanish language instructor because you teach English speakers to grasp the heart of the Spanish language learning experience intuitively from an English perspective, which creates a manageable mental transition in accepting the learning process instead of the botched language trauma in the school system. Thank you so very much!!!!
This is a great video Paul, spot on, and easy to understand.
I'm so grateful that I came across your channel, simple yet perfect.
This was extremely helpful. You made this seem so easy and it definitely was. I will be reviewing this lesson and looking forward to many more. Thanks Paul 😊
Thank you so much, you are an amazing teacher. Ive just found your channel and your lessons are brilliant. Thank you so much for taking the time to post these. They are super helpful. Love and all the best from Scotland ❤️🙏🏴
Thank you so much for this lesson series! This is EXACTLY what my brain needed to make Spanish make sense! I will be working my way through this material for weeks
You are absolutely the best spanish teacher out there. You have helped me so much. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing these teachings. It's my first time speaking Spanish and this first lesson already has built my confidence.
You're very welcome!
yipee, more lessons, very helpful, after watching a lot of your lessons this past year I really have greatly improved with my Spanish. Thanks!
That's great to hear, Maria. This course will be the best I have done yet.
Cognates have always driven me nuts. Nobody ever presented me with the simple idea that many (but not all) English words that end in "AL" are cognates. Thank you (even a year after you created the video)!
I've learned so much in this lesson and I can't wait to learn more progressively. You're gifted, please, never stop teaching.
I have been speaking and learning Spanish since I was a teenager...I am now 60 and I truly appreciate the way you introduce the sounds!
I'm glad that you like the lessons. That's great. :)
Great lesson! I learned much more in 36 minutes than in a comparable amount of time on any of the language apps. I'm looking forward to more lessons!
Watching on my Lunch break at work. I’ll have to watch again a home and do the exercises out loud. I’m thrilled to of found your channel! You have made the most sense so far out of every program I’ve tried.
This guy is legit! Thank you. Having a blast learning it!
As a beginner, I find your method of teaching very effective and relaxing. Gracias.
Happy to hear that!
Brilliant! This first lesson contained far more informacion* about Spanish than my first 10 Babbel lessons. The organización* is clear and well thought out and the presenter’s outline ingeniously anticipates the PRACTICAL needs of an English-speaking beginner trying to learn Spanish. ThisQroo Paul fella is an excellent communicator as well as an inspired teacher and has given me back my expat sparkle for attempting to learn a new language.
One tip (or perhaps, warning). If this single video were a meal, it would be considered a large feast. Albeit only about a half hour long, it is VERY calorie dense - linguistically. So you may need to take small bites, pause, and chew on what you have learned at various points. And you may not be able to finish it all in one sitting. I myself plan to return to the lesson as I would a favorite restaurant. It’s that good.
*I learn this “ación” trick of converting English words to Spanish in this first lesson!
Thanks for the feedback. I realized a bit too late that these lessons were a bit too calorie intensive for most folks. Statistically speaking, the series performed poorly so I stopped after 7 lessons. Now I make much shorter lessons. :)
I agree! It's super dense! I am so so so happy to have found this though. It's exactly what I was looking for when I came to youtube to see it i could learn more Spanish beyond a formal greeting! Fabulous job!!!🎉
You have an amazing ability to present calmly and clearly these lessons. They are so informative and useful.
This was so well done
This is excellent Paul, thank you so much! You break it down very easily making it super easy to learn. Love it!
Glad it was helpful! :)
Great lesson, master presentation!
I found your channel today and I honestly can't thank you enough! This video in particular was a great recap for me of so many things I have learnt over my first few months of studying Spanish, but I had several lightbulb moments throughout. I can't wait to explore the rest of your videos. SO helpful! :)
Hello Paul, my profession is teaching language and from this one lesson I am looking forward to taking your whole course! This is great. My Spanish is intermediate level, but it has been a while since I've really used it very much, so I am starting at the beginning for a review. I am so grateful I found you for both the information about Mexico and for this course. Thank you!
Thank you so much, Debra. I am slowly adding to this latest course in between keeping up with my other hobbies and traveling. :)
I am finding this very helpful. I will be moving to Mexico later this year and I have tried learning different ways , but I find your instruction very helpful especially with pronunciation.
I think you will like the course. The emphasis is on Mexican Spanish and being able to communicate during common situations: shopping, eating out, banking, medical needs etc.
Thanks so much went through some tutors but couldn’t keep a schedule or their patience this first video has me excited !
Thank you for your clear explanation. I love the cognate tricks and your pronunciation!
2 years of Duolingo could not teach me what he taught me in 1 hour. 😮
This a huge step for me in learning Spanish ❤🎉
I'm getting better in Spanish ❤🥳
That's great to hear!
Love your lessons. It’s been four years here and it’s helped me a lot. Thanks.
Muchas gracias por tus lecciones!
Que padre, Paul! Me gusta mucho esta hack para aprender español! Usualmente, yo uso Duolingo para gramatica, y otros UA-cam videos y películas para comprehensible input y escuchando. Este es uno más tool en mi toolbelt! (Ahora necesito buscar estas palabras no lo sé...) Muchas gracias! 👍
Hey! Thanks for writing that in Spanish, I am surprised(I thought I totally lost my ability to understand Spanish before watching Paul’s video) I was able to translate it while reading it.
Just started my Spanish journey with you and I'm loving it. So clear and structured. I feel so motivated, thank you :) Jonny
Excellent, gracias por la leccion
Crazy good. This guy made Spanish make sense!!
Ty! Hopefully I can go from zero to conversational with the help of you!
Sounds good. More lessons to come soon.

Do you do Spanish translation to English?
You have a very clear voice and you pronounce the words very clearly for I can understand
Thanks a lot! Your video is really helpful! You are simply the best!
Thank you for your help, I already started my lesson.
You have a new subscriber! Wow, I can’t believe how simple you made learning Spanish. I have struggled with memorizing vocabulary and forming sentences for months. This video made learning Spanish a bit easier for me.
WelcomeQ I think you will find this method more useful because I really focus on your English to help you learn Spanish.
I liked this one again! I guess my old like got wiped out when you reposted. My Qroo Paul Word list has 104 words on it now! These are a list of all the words used in the first two episodes of your new series. Like I said last time I was really surprised how few of the cognates were on the "1000 basic words" list. This number does not count all the definite and indefinite articles you introduced.
On the TV Spanish News program I watched last night has the word "invitar" but I checked and "invasion" in English, which I learned is spelled with a "s" and not a "t" is "invasión" in Spanish.
These videos look fantastic production wise. One thing is that I noticed that for much of the time your hands are below the frame and we can't see them.
You have to take a year of language to get a degree here at Sacramento State. I took a crash summer school class in ASL, (American Sign Language) which is the hand sign language used by deaf people. I also took some classes in railroad operations where I learned a little about the railroad hand signals that rail road folks use.
My point is that your hand movements and facial expression carry meaning. But if your hands are out of the frame we can't see them.
I thought that it might be from your years of police work that you keep your hand gestures close to your belt line just in case you need to use your service weapons.
You are so perfectly framed in these shots that I don't want to suggest pulling the camera back and making you smaller. Maybe if you thought about it you could make your hand gestures higher. It is cool that even now you raise your hands up into the frame to emphasize an important point.
My guess is that just me making you aware of how your viewers see or don't see your hands will help you to keep your hands in the shot frame when you want them there.
Here is a quick question. At the taco stand that I frequent on weekends I get a burrito and a Spanish lesson every night.
They are trying to teach me how to say mild as in not spicy. I was hearing
"Pesoso" but I checked and this isn't a Spanish word. I am starting to think they were saying "picoso" as in "un poco picoso".
The other theory I had at first was that I was hearing "soso" which is on my basic word list as "bland". Well anyway any incite you can give me on what I was hearing would be great.
These videos are great Paul, keep up the good work.
I've never thought about the importance of showing my hands. I already thought I was waving them around too much as it is...lol.
As far as the taco stand, they normally say no picoso o poco picoso for a little spicy.
Great Job Paul! being a French native and quite fluent in English, this is in my opinion the fastest way (for me) to make my trip to Spain next summer more enjoyable. Thanks a lot!
Very good. A practical manner of understanding Spanish and a good foundation to build on.
Perfect! You're not giving me the fish but teaching greatly how to catch myself. Love it! Gracias
This is amazing. As said ad nauseam, your explanation is fantastic. Duolingo learner here (nearly done with the 2nd level) but you have simplified the process significantly. On another note, as someone who is already fully bilingual (English and Afrikaans) I fortunately don't have a problem with the rolling "rr" as you roll the "r" in Afrikaans. The phonetic pronunciation of Spanish words is also easy as it follows the pronunciation of letters in the alphabet in Afrikaans (when pronounced as individual letters). Thank you, dankie, gracias! From Cape Town, South Africa 🇿🇦
You are heaven sent sir! Gracias!
Wow this has been a revelation 🎉muchas gracias!
Great video and explanation! I just subscribed and will definitely be a regular viewer. Thank you for your content!
Thank you so much for this! Best teacher!
So happy I stumbled across you online. I love the language and your input and technique has given me a further dimension and passion for the language. Everything actually makes sense it is so gratifying. For the first time I actually feel as though I am really learning. Thank you !!!!
Great class. You make it so much easier!
Paul, you are a gifted teacher. Learning conversational Spanish has been something I've been interested in for years, but each attempt left me feeling overwhelmed until I found your excellent videos. Your approach is so logical and "approachable." Thank you!
Fabuloso….muchas gracias…will be continuing with all your videos. So glad I found you!!
That was super helpful, muy Gracias.
Great content looking forward to learning more from you
I learned more in this video then my 4 years of high school spanish. Its all about the approach. You're a genius!
Game changer! You rock thank you so much
You are genius man . That's a vert nice way of teaching Spanish. Well done 👏
As a spaniard May I say that the soft "c" only sounds "s" in latin america and the south of spain.
The neutral castillian pronounciation is "z" .
So, depends in wich country you are.
Magnificent lesson. I have serious dificulty with english "r" and vowels 😂
Hola Paul, Linda. I want to express my thanks for your Spanish class series. Tengo ochenta y cuatro años and learning Spanish has been hard ... even while living here for much of the last 4 years. I´ve done everything regarding learning Spanish and my wife is very good. having years of Spanish in college but I just have a very hard time. I know lots of palabras, numbers, and touristy stuff but it was your course and the subjunctive videos that have really helped me begin to speak Spanish. I strongly support your work, look forward to even more help videos from you. Todo lo mejor! Leo
Brilliant course. None better.
Yes!! Spanish for adults, formulating useful sentences during the first lesson! So encouraging. Thank you!
You are a really good educator.
Eres un muy buen educador.
Thank you for your very clear and confidence-building way to learn Spanish - it's great.
FYI...re your comment about the double consonants in English, for example in 'recommendation', there is, in fact, a grammar rule called the 'double the consonant' rule, which ties in with a rule called the 'vowel-consonant-vowel' rule. This states that if you have a word like 'tap' (with a short 'a' sound) and you want to make it continuous, you have to double the consonant to make it 'tapping'... otherwise it would become 'taping'. .. and tape is a vowel/consonant/vowel word (with a long vowel sound). Therefore, as the letter 'o' in the word 'recommendation' is a short vowel, it's necessary to double the 'm' after it to keep it sounding short. I hope that's clear...and yes, I am an English Teacher...! 😀
Literally the best lesson I’ve ever had !!
Paul, I am a huge fan! I took 3 years of Spanish in High School and didn't learn much of this! I am feeling empowered. Sorry that you discontinued this course. I will watch the rest and will look for your other classes. Thank you!
Love love love this lesson. Thank you so much! I learned more in this hour that I have in several hours of writing out conjugations, etc.
I’ve learned more in this one video than I had in the past couple months!
I live in Colombia, took Spanish in high school and my story was similar to yours, and your course is helping me I look forward to watching all your videos multiple times.
I've been a beginner in Spanish for years. I go back to it when I travel. However, this made it all so logical & easy! Cognates rock!
Loved this lesson Paul! Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into making this video for us. You are truly amazing! Thanks again!
