  • Here is a very interesting way to mix a kick drum not using synthesized plugins and it’s a very old school technique shown to me my Steve Albini.
    Mostly used in days of only analog consoles this can still be applied on your DAW.
    Band was called Spirit in the Room
    And you can always find me..

    Directed and produced by Suplex Audio / Manny’s Mic Locker
    Video excerpts from Produce Like A Pro ( Warren Huart) and Pro Mix Academy.
    Thank you Warren.

    I saw you mention this before, probably on warrens channel, but I was listening on my phone, and never got chance to hear it properly. Now I’m listening to it on a good system, and it’s awesome! Beautiful bass!

    Wow..learning from Albini. He's like a Professor in the studio. And crazy technique I would have never thought of. What it does in essence is add resonance, same as if the front head was less baffled and ringing.

    This is a great trick. Like adding a nice shiny, pillowy coating. I think it would work really well stylistically for certain songs. Those fuzz guits are happening too -- Thanks Manny!

    That's really interesting to "abuse" the tools to add a low-end feedback loop that will decay on its own. Will remember that. The music sounds great too.

      Thanks and I’m pretty sure it’s all in the hands of the guitarest . The singer played most instrumentals as I played some as well but not so obvious stuff. He used a music man small amp 2x12 combo and some earth Quaker pedals

    A bit confusing in the explanation, but zooming in on the session I can see what's going on there..
    If I see correct, you're sending from the original kick drum to two identical busses both buses haventhe same identical, EQ and settings...
    And then the first of the two identical buses has a send on it that is set,
    to send to
    the same 2 identical boxes -
    The first of the two buses does have an extra plug-in before the pro Q and it's a
    EQ3 1-Band I'm guessing you tried that one first and didn't like it and left it there ??

    • @mannysmiclocker
      @mannysmiclocker  6 місяців тому +2

      Sorry about That ..
      Ok start with your main kick from OG channel coming out of the stereo mix then make an auxiliary sending original kick to the auxiliary and have that coming out of the stereo. Then make that tEQ on that auxiliary one then send that out to a auxiliary2 same Eq duplicated then the output of that auxiliary 2 goes back into the auxiliary 1 and that makes the oscillation almost kind of like a Feedback EQ. I hope that’s better

    great vid sir thank you! i would shape the sustain with an elysia nvelope if necessary, also i have a mic comparison video where i compare diferent dynamic mics including sm57 and md241 couple of kick mics also and no mic had a low end like the prodipe drm kd eaven touching the mic cable would be fkin with the sound, wanted to tell you about it since i seen your video with warren, i always wondered if im just a mic layman person or was that mic really special, i also want to know if any other mic does that, becouse it was my first kick mic so i bought more after that and to my surprise none of them gave me this bass bump

    Anyone know how to mimic this technique in Ableton Live (suite 9 to be exact). I keep getting it to feedback/overload the input/output within the DAW making it unusable.
    I tried creating separate tracks, using return channels and messing with the “send knob” in the return tracks itself. The signal flow is correct, but it keeps acting up. Anyone else ran into this issue? Thanks!

    • @mannysmiclocker
      @mannysmiclocker  4 місяці тому +1

      Sounds like you’re doing it right because that’s what happens to me and I just lower all the threshold so the feedback isn’t happening but you can see the sound wave push out air

    • @bucalemu5473
      @bucalemu5473 4 місяці тому

      @@mannysmiclocker OK. I’ll report back and see if lowering the threshold helped. I thought I was going crazy when implementing that technique. Glad I’m not the only one who ran into the same problem. Thanks Manny!
