I bought that same bike in 1984 with my re-enlistment bonus when I was in the Marine Corps. I rode the hell out of that bike, all over SoCal and up and down PCH. What a great bike. Brings back great memories.
Me too. I lived in Alhambra, CA. Bought mine used had under 300 miles. Original owner lived in a mansion in LA. He wanted 2k and I offered 1k. He said OK and also gave me 2 helmets, leather riding jacket, gloves and a tour of his mansion.
the Nighthawk was my dream bike back in high school..when they were new. Bought an 84 this summer, rebuilt all the usual things and am loving the bike.
My dad, who's now nearing 70, owns exactly this bike. He's owned it for at least 20 years now, and it's got 63000 miles on it. Still going strong, and those Honda's sound so so smooth. When he got it I was around 20 and didn't really like the model, but as I got older it got nicer and nicer. Today I absolutely love it and don't think I'll ever let it go. It really ages well and grows on you. It makes you understand that things like bikes over time don't change, but it is you yourself that changes. Let go of certain things too soon in life can be a big mistake looking back. I ride it now more and more next to my own zx9r, both incomparable bikes with each other, but both fantastic bikes. Young women seem to dig the Nighthawk more than the zx9r, I guess I have to admit that the model, black paint job, chrome accents really make this bike both classy and bad ass. I did put steel braided break lines on it though, kept them black sleeved so the stainless ends really put a nice touch on it. Unfortunately my dads Nighthawk doesn't have these original "slash cut" mufflers, but luckely good imitations that are just normal straight cut. Awesome bike, even for a beginning rider.
I rode and partook of the golden age of motorcycle ujm I remember the commercial said 650 nighthawk runs with 750s without even breathing hard thanks you for saving and promoting these beautiful bikes God bless America respect
Man I remember my uncle pulling up on that same bike...Its was like so futuristic with the square headlights and square speedometer ...lol...Boy I see it much differently 2day! 🤣🤣
FRIEND OF MINE HAD ONE OF THESE AT WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY BACK IN MID 80’S KEPT IT IN HIS KITCHEN . RODE IT AROUND CAMPUS AND I LOVED THAT BIKE. JUST WONDER WHERE IT IS NOW.
I had a burgundy Nighthawk 650 just like this back in the late 80s. It was my first streetbike. Honda put many high tech (for the time) features on these. Shaft drive & 6 speed transmission. Dual front disc brakes and TRAC anti-dive forks. Full instrumentation including a gear indicator. Hydraulic lifters. It was a great all around motorcycle! Hagerty online value for a mint Nighthawk 650 is $6100.
I have an 83 Nighthawk 650 that I bought as a starter bike for 1200 CAD, and I love that thing. it's such an incredibly smooth bike. It's got 72000 kms on it so it's not in near as nice condition but it still purrs like a kitten.
Damn, this brings back memories. Mostly good. I owned one of these a long time ago. Great bike... overall... 1983 was the first year of production for a then all-new bike. No matter how few the miles, if a bike has been sitting a long time, you should take it to a good mechanic before you go riding it. It was a lot of motorcycle for the money. The funny thing is, now, buying one of these in great shape will cost more than when new. Then you might have to pay for some needed upgrading. If I had the money, I would look for a 1985 version, and go from there. This bike has so many virtues vs few liabilities. And just look at it! It's one of the coolest, now retro-modern, motorcycles out there. Thank you Kaplan America
Wow! Nice. bought an 83 brand new In Millington, TN. when I was in the Navy but in the burgundy color. My first bike. Rode it from TN to upstate NY, got crated to PR my next duty station. Rode all over PR, then crated to VA Beach, my last duty station. Total of 30k miles of fun. Great bike. Thanks for the memories. Now, what's with the lousy routing of the SS brake lines on this one??? Otherwise a great time machine. BTW $2900 brand new in 83. Good old days, I miss the 80's.
Love this bike . knighthawk grows on you more and more as you grow up ! shape , stance , colour , wheels, mufflers , perfectly blended together . Wales UK.
@@KaplanCycles Im new to your channel. Love what you guys are doing! I've got an 82 Maxim 550, awesome bike and with about 52hp and a six speed it moves my 185 pounds pefect
Got one in a 3 bike deal. Actually my first road bikes. Got a CB650 and a CB350 with it also. I drove it from south of Worcester to West Yarmouth Cape Cod about every weekend. It must of drove from one end of the Cape to the other about 30 times. It actually help keep some miles of my 66 Chevelle SS 396 and was a dream in the heavy Cape Cod traffic. That thing was so smooth. It would be nice to drive one again I took the rgeg CB650 one weekend...ONE WEEKEND. It had some issues and had a nasty vibration which didn't seem bad until you hit the highway. Of course I took it the day I had 4 wisdom teeth surgically extracted. It actually vibrated 3 of the teeth stitches out. Yep that was a weekend I will never forget. It actually made me hate Honda for abit
Ill never forget, bought one when i eas 17. Dad took it around the block and came back shaking his head. Too much power he said, LOL. Wish i still had it
With all the retro bikes coming out why doesn't Honda remake the cb650sc and the cb700 sc Nighthawks . These are so sought after and bullet proof . Seems like a no brainer .
Kind of a shame that nobody even gave this engine hell, not even broken in. Really nice to see one in factory condition tho. I have an 84 one with 63 thousand miles on it. I live in Poland and in came from United States so it's been through half of the world. Exhausts, manifolds, levers all scratched to hell from crashes. Tank was rusty inside so I put nuts and bolts inside and taped it to the concrete mixer. It keeps up with new bikes, does great around town and on twisties. Of course compared to new bikes, riding it really let's you know it's old technology but the charm and smell of it is unbeatable. During a traffic stop cop told me it looks amazing at 40 yo and it's forbidden to sell it so gonna keep an eye out for new parts and keep it. My first bike and probably last one I will sell
Had an 83 in Candy Wineberry Red. That was a fantastic bike and was a ton of fun once the tach hit about 7k RPM. Would be fun to have something like that again.
Nice find! I had one, brand new, in 1983. I still have the buyer's order. Base price $2,673; $100 dealer prep; tax $113.07; title $3.00; license $5.30; inspection $5.00. Drive out, a little over $2,900 and change.
Just bought mine ...definetly not a museum piece but its still runs smooth..here in Germany they had 50 HP and are called CBX 650 e....there is quite a lot of cleaning and paint work to do but when I go into the garage instead of starting working on it I just stare at it for half an hour 😀😀😀
Bought an 83' 650 in 2019 summer, brand new condition with 13000km on it. Went out in the morning to find out it was ran over by someone. Lucky my landlord had a CCTV and caught this truck that ran over it. Unfortunately, the insurance company wrote it off. I dearly miss having it.
I remember the commercial where they there was this bike, a handful of guy's, and a chick asking who's it was. I was to young to ride at the time, but old enough to remember this bike, that commercial and the blonde, who was in it. Lol I recall this bike looking futuristic to me at the time, so much so that I bought one almost all original with 4000 miles a few years ago, and I still have it.
I flogged the piss out of one of these when I was a student at U of A in Tucson. Skipped class and put 1000 miles the first 5 days riding out in the Sonora Desert. I grew up riding a XL 250, and the first time I opened this up in 2nd gear it wanted to leave me behind. Damn, I’d love to have this bike.
Man you're right. A lot of these bikes nowadays get sold for cheap to be mutulated into "cafe racer" or "bobber" or whatever the heck they come up with just to kill them with. If i'd had the space, i'd save a bunch of them from that fate.
I had an '83 650 and a '93 750. The '80s bikes had a lot of nice features. The later 750 was built to a lower price point. The only feature carried over to the '90s models was the hydraulic lifters. The 700 was the best of them all.
I owned one for over 15 yrs, and loved it. However, the charging system was pitiful and the batty was always needing to be replaced. It had been checked and was at factory specs, they did boost up output later on
Man what A Jewel the apex of ergonomics balance I like the slinder angles at the front of the seat/ tank it's cut where you can really tuck in en connect with the bike Honda really did get it rite on the the money with this li'l steet'er It's always been the unabtainium for me though as I never could find one close enough to me ta chase that wasn't rode hard en put away wet 🐎
Beautiful bike, sir. I have one nearly like it that I bought used with no manuals or paperwork. Can you give me any info on the adjustment on the left fork? I bought a Clymer manual for it but there's no info about that specifically. I'd love to come check out your museum someday.
So, why was the brake line routed that way? Not like it was from the factory, looks like the brake line was too long. Any idea what it sold for? Did it make it up to $12,000, like the average appraisal?
haha, first thing I said out loud way - hey, those brake lines are wrong!...still a beautiful bike and I can forgive them for not routing them perfectly.
I bought a 1983 650 Nighthawk about 15 years ago. I bought it for $200. I gave it away, but it ran like brand new with 60,000 miles on it. It's a shame to see a bike sit for 40 years and still need more work than the one I had with 60,000 hard miles on it.
