So in a later episode, when you actually get to see Dracula fight, I hope you remember that little tidbit that he's actually _weakened right now from not feeding._
Fun fact, Leon Belmont was the Belmont you played as in the Castlevania game Lament of Innocence. Which showed off the origins of the Belmont Clan and their famous whip, the Vampire Killer. Also while Dracula is the most famous gothic vampire, Carmilla, another gothic novel, predates Dracula by 25 years.
Godbrand is an interesting character. Another writer would have made him a mindless thug, useful only for violence and comic relief. Not that he’s not used for comic relief; but he’s not /only/ used for that. Godbrand has a brain; he’s vulgar, but he can be diplomatic…to a point. He apologized to Hector in an earlier episode and he didn’t just barge in to Dracula’s presence. He wasn’t always polite once he was there, but it felt to me as though he was aware that Dracula would accept (or at least tolerate) a certain amount of “Godbrand-being-Godbrand”. To your point, he was also the one from the court to raise the question with Dracula at all. So, the thought occurred to him and he took that initiative to address it with the person in charge. And he drew conclusions from that conversation; too early to say how correct he is, but the mere fact that he drew them at all shows, yes; not just a mindless thug.
1. 8:19 depicts Leon Belmont, the first of the Belmont line of monster hunters. It also really puts into perspective how impressive Trevor is when you consider that he's half trained and has been hiding from the church for most of his adult life 2. The Morningstar is an actual whip upgrade from the games 3. I love how they show the parallels between Isaac and Hector. The former has had all his love seemingly burned out of his heart, whereas the latter , in his own way, has an overabundance of it. 4. Even though Godbrand is the comic relief of the vampire generals, I love that they had him be the first in the court to figure out what Dracula's real plan was. His only mistake was not leaving the castle the next night.
The whole "mercy" vs. "humanity" thing is a very clever bit of wordplay... Dracula's use of the word "humane" is highly tongue-in-cheek, because of what humans did to his wife... but Hector picks up on that, and opts for the term "merciful," indicating that he's actually sincere.
Fun fact: Note that Isaac's flame when he summons his night creatures is red, whereas Hector's is blue. Meaning all the creatures we saw in Gresit were JUST Hector's. Really gives an idea to the scale of Dracula's army and how quickly a single Forgemaster can make a small army from just a pile of corpses.
Dracula is weakened because of the lack of blood drinking vampires get there vitality from blood so he is on a no food streak because of grief .instead of drinking madly of revenge it really a nice way to show he still loves his wife
22:50 Godbrand has more guts than brains. Carmilla has guts AND brains, and a vicious streak a mile wide. The rest of the vampire lords are clever, semi intelligent, and cautious, and many are quite powerful, but even if they all banded together, Carmilla and Godbrand with them, killed Hector and Isaac to stop the night creatures from joining the fight, they likely would still have no chance against Dracula. They rightly fear Dracula, all of them. It's why they showed up so fast when summoned at the beginning of the season. Carmilla is mouthy, but right when she brought up Dracula's wife. It's why Dracula let her go with a stern talking to rather than pulling her head off in front of everyone. Godbrand was right, when he brought up the lack of human food. But, Godbrand needs the threat of violence from a credible force to make him back down. The rest of the vampire lords are too scared to bring up their concerns to Dracula.
8:19 That is the portrait of Leon Belmont. According to legend, he was an accomplished warrior even before devoting his family to hunting the creatures of the night.
I've watched reactions from Definitely Not Definitive before, but reacting to Castlevania is what made me subscribe to the channel. Love your ending commentaries for this series.
Oh, if you think Sypha is cool now, you are going to have your minds *blown* in a few episodes. And I can’t wait to see your faces. 😁 And Dracula is not at his best, yet he’s still scarily strong and menacing. Does it make you wonder what he’d be like in his prime? 😨
Morningstar is the ultimate upgrade in the pre-Symphony platformers. You would find upgrades by breaking walls (hence, the chest hidden in a wall). Morningstar is second only to the Vampire Killer whip in sheer stopping power against unholy creatures.
Idk, for me when you get this tragic backstory explaining why the manipulative evil woman is an manipulative evil woman, it doesn't put me on her side because she's not any better than the people she's killing. It gives her depth but really didn't change my pov of her.
Whenever I hear about the protags heading to "an old family storehouse" or something, I just _immediately_ start waiting for them to get there, crack it open, and share an awkward moment with the homeless bum that's been living there this whole time- all storage-wars-gone-wrong style. Dudes just tryin to eat some beans when all'a sudden some _bros_ just show up looking for their stuff. I gotta say. I was waiting for it, my first time checking this out.
Yeah Dracula intends to take humanity and vampirekind with him, partially lying to Hector as he indeed plans on leaving the animals and Night creatures behind while wiping out sentient life on Earth. And as much as a prideful fool he is, Godbrand knows that he and Carmilla both two very capabilities vampires they stand no chance against Drac even if he does not feed. Showing just how much above the rest of vampires he is even when essentially starving himself. As for the item Trevor uncovered, the Morning Star is a blessed relic in the games from what I can gather. Capable of being both a whip and club, the item is designed to kill most enemies in a single hit of the end of the whip. In the show it’s a legendary weapon known for such a skill. But in the games it’s the strongest form of the Vampire Killer, the blessed whip Trevor uses.
Have to disagree with your take of "hard to be invested in Dracula because he has resigned himself to death". This suicidal aspect is introduced to make us still somewhat sympathize with him, because we now see how the righteous anger he had right after his wife's murder has warped into somber resignation to a self imposed duty: punish humans before he dies. You should not agree with him, but you can still feel sad to see how he has changed since the start of episode one when he seemed happy. Also with Carmela's developing story, not to spoil it or anything, but it will become clear that each new piece of information revealed about her backstory is meant to contrast Dracula's own. Hers is meant to show someone who lets themselves be motivated solely by their ambitions for the future, while his is about someone who has lost all past ambitions due to profound feelings for another.
Carmilla is amazing best charecter in my book, followed by isaac and I also love cho (the geisha-like vampire general) even if she does not get a single line we will get a cool look into her backstory
I wouldn't say that Godbrand was intelligent enough to ask the question. I'd rather say that Godbrand was dumb enough to ask the question. The others knew not to push Dracula, or question him.
Ive always wondered if Dracula couldve wiped out humanity like he wanted to....i'd like to think some righteous humans couldve stood up against him but knowing what I know about the anime...i doubt it as well lol
According to Aria of Sorrow, they did manage it. It took the combined armies of half the planet and a group of priests sealing his castle into a solar eclipse, but they did finally kill Dracula for good.
So in a later episode, when you actually get to see Dracula fight, I hope you remember that little tidbit that he's actually _weakened right now from not feeding._

As well as the origins of Dracula.

the Belmont Hold is chock full of references to the games - so many items and weapons from all over the series

You said Isaac twice.

FYI: Carmilla is originally from the novella Carmilla, published 25 years before Dracula.
Ah, Leon Belmont.
The Ganon vs Dracula memories be returning.
I love the character level of evolution that takes place over this full series.

7:51 I think Enochian in Castlevania is the language of Hell or sth like that.

Exactly. I didn't even see her as a victim just power hungry by any means

Bucky wants to see doggys in the tv just like my dog.
I think it’s more that Godbrand was the only one stupid enough to bring up the question of feeding with Dracula himself.
Bucky reminds me of my little one. He also doesn't like animated dogs lol.
Here we gooooo!
