- WHAAT!? Why am I barely listening to this Finnish band, Nightwish? I guess today is the day that I check them out, and I am meant to share it with you. This is where symphony meets metal music. Not sure how this will go, but I am committed to opening my ear and mind to this music. Let's go!

Hello Xee [ Xee the World ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Every day. All the time. Very, very few bands can do that. 🙂 And I'm pretty sure that their studio recordings don't take very long to get perfect. Enjoy!

This one is better than that one.WHAAA! Nightwish sounds better in EVERYTHING. EVERY DAY. Depends on the song and the performance. A handful of the songs do indeed sound better as live performance (most don't), since it is often with different members and Tuomas has changed the composition of the song. Famous examples of these are Phantom of the Opera (studio composition is trash in comparison), While your lips are still red, Story time and of course Ghost love score

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on UA-cam. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered UA-cam in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turned 7 years this march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.
Glad to see that another reactor liked the experience! Not all metal is harsh, growly screaming. There are more sub-genres than you can shake a stick at. Most people classify this as "symphonic power metal," but the band mastermind/founder (the keyboardist) doesn't prefer to classify it within a specific genre, it just is what it is. As a result, many of us in the fanbase have just started calling it "the Nightwish genre." They truly are their own thing. You'll hear the wide difference among songs if you choose to listen to more. No two songs are alike! Welcome aboard!
Hello dear reactor, Nightwish music has been in my life very long. I have all their albums since 1996. The master mind behind this beautiful music is Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards), our metal Mozart. Sidenote: be careful using pictures of this band in your video's. I love the picture with Tarja and Sami, but in 2013 they were no longer in the band. Anette was in for a while, Jukka, Marko have left since this performance, so it's easy to get a picture with people that are not on stage.
We took our at the time 13yrld niece to Nightwish and we lost her right way, spotted her crowd surfing a couple time, she had a blast. lol. Metal comes in many forms.
I'm sure Gabriel mentioned Ever Dream. Short (in comparison) starts a little softer and builds from there. One of my favorites. And should you be impressed with Floor's vocal mastery perhaps give a listen to her solo performance of the Lady Gaga tune, Shallow performed on the Dutch tv show Beste' Zangers which was the beginning of her solo projects.

Nightwish have changed a few members over the years but one constant thread remains and that's an insanely high level of talent, musicality and musicianship. I would not call these guys rock stars because they have a kind of humility that doesn't really fit the typical idea of a rock star - for me they exceed that label, and are in the same bracket as Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin as creative forces and live performers. And I can't comment without a word on Floor Jansen, who for my money is the most complete singer the music world has ever seen. Her stuff with Nightwish, After Forever, and her solo work is consistently brain meltingly good, especially live. If I were you I'd dig into both her stuff and more Nightwish for reactions, it'll likely change the way you perceive music.
Originally Floor was sent by Allfather Odhinn to Midgard to gather the souls of fallen warriors to Valhalla, but she
got distracted and joined a series of bands. However, Floor still gathers souls by her grace, beauty and the sheer power
of her vocals.

Your intro is ridiculous. However, you are right about one thing: She's not ready - to be badgered if she doesn't like a song, or if she dares to deviate from Floor Jansen - with a couple exceptions. To have people in the comments talk about how Floor would sing any particular song better, how she should stick to live concert material. So no, I doubt she's ready to be bullied, but I sense that she's a people pleaser, good as she is, so I don't think she has a thing to worry about. Valkyrie Goddess my butt. No singer is a god or goddess. People are ridiculous.
welcome to the fantastic symphonic metal universe of Nightwish Band, their live performances are some of the things that come so close to epic that they get to be mythical and of course Floor Jansen, queen of the stage and goddess of music, she can sing anything in any musical style she wants (WARNING! her voice, her stage presence, her charisma, in one word: her "spell" is highly addictive).
this concert (wacken 2013) is incredibly epic and deserves to be watched and reacted entirely, song by song, in particular I suggest these three songs: "song of myself", "storytime" and "ever dream"
this performance of "ghost love score" is one of the three best performances of the nightwish band, together with "the poet and the pendulum" from 2015 concert at the london wembley arena and "the greatest show on earth" from 2015 concert in tampere - finland (actually there is a fourth best performance: "dead boy's poem" from the 2018 concert in buenos aires).

Who’s this guy walking in? That is Emppu their lead guitarist. He’s been there all along but doesn’t get a lot of camera time at the beginning part of the song. He is known to be the jokester of the band.

Un coucou de l'armée NIGHTWISH de France, avec un peu de retard très bonne réaction à l'écoute du plus grand groupe du monde pour ma part. Vous venez de faire connaissance du métal symphonique et de notre reine Floor, mais vous n'avez qu'effleuré le dessus de l'iceberg et vous n'êtes qu'a l'entrée du terrier de lapin. Je vous souhaite de bons floorgasmes et continuez vos réactions nous serons toujours derrière vous pour vous soutenir pour notre groupe...... Encore plus d'écoutes s'il vous plait...... Merci. Continuez sur le festival du Wacken Open Air 2013, vous êtes sur de ne pas vous tromper, les quinze chansons du set sont des classiques pour tous les fans du groupe et sont à écouter absolument. Vous venez d'écouter la 13ème chanson du set, ensuite faites le Ever Dream qui commence comme une douce ballade voix piano et sur un signe de Marko ( le bassiste ) continue d'accélérer pour finir comme un train à grande vitesse et par la même occasion vous ferez la connaissance avec la voix de Marko, puis essayez une petite histoire avec Storytime, excellent rock dont le refrain reste longtemps dans la tête ou alors du plus lourd avec Ghost River pour entendre le mélange magnifique des voix de Floor avec Marko ou encore plus lourd avec Romanticide..... Boy if you’re excited about a metal female vocalist then strap in because ; in my opinion and I’ve been listening to metal since 1978 , in the last generation the best , by far , metal bands are female fronted or all female . From Nightwish and Epica from Europe to the great Japanese women bands of Lovebites , band maid , Nemophila. To the powerful political women of Indonesia called V. O. B. To women who can hit high notes like Mariah and growl like rabid wolverines … such as Jinjer , Ad Infinitum and spirit box .

As you delve deeper into their music (as I hope you will) you will find many diverse songs. Symphonic metal is the official genre, but you will find songs ranging from metal to ballads and even a jazz track. I have subscribed to your channel in the hope that you'll keep on watching and listening to Nightwish, especially their live recordings. I saw them live at Wembley in November 2022 and it was the most amazing unforgettable experience. To hear more from them, I suggest you follow Gabriel's list or pick and mix from it. Hello Xee, welcome into the wonderful world of storytelling by Nightwish and their incredible talented female vocalist Floor Jansen. Although the band is Finnish, their third singer is not. She is Dutch and was with them less than a year. IOT will help them for the rest of their world tour, because the second one was no longer available due to pregnancy.
Yes you’re right, there are some background music which refers to Sibelius’ “Finlandia” compositions.

The filming of this concert was brilliant. Look at the crowd reactions, the expressions of the band members. It was the night of their lives.
Why is 10 minutes long, Nigthwish has longer songs ;-)
Don't panic, they are typically 4-5 minutes long. But there are also much longer songs.
The comparison with Evanescences is as wrong as it is right. Amy Lee is a classical pianist and that also influences her singing. In Europe, the greater emphasis on the classical component is typical. Amy sings like a typical European and there are even more singers like that there, like Floor. Amy singing like Floor is therefor more correct. When Evanescence celebrated its great success, Nightwish was already on tour with their first singer Tarja, who sang much more classically. The picture of the band you have shown is from this time.
Floor can also do growls, but typically only uses them selectively in Nightwish, as she did in this song.
In Symphonic, a soft, female voice is typical. Often there is also a harsh, male voice. They want to achieve good contrast and thus create tension.
The guy running in is the guitarist Empuu. He often has nothing to do. In the middle, the whole band disappears because there are only backtracks from the orchestra.
I don't hear a typical Finnish background here. You have to explain that to us. Apart from that, metal itself is typically Finnish. Nightwish is a mix of classical, Irish folk and pop with metal. Irish folk is also typical of Finland because it is very popular there.

Yes, there are some growls used in symphonic metal, but it is typically used in contrast to the female singers. Other bands in this genre include Epica, Within Temptation, Ayreon, and Xandria, to name a few. You won't go wrong listening to any of them. Epica is my personal favorite. I would listen to the song Unleashed from the Retrospect concert to see the band with a full orchestra and choir.

I had to chuckle when a picture of Simon Cowell flashed up in a Nightwish reaction. The two could not be further apart in that Nightwish is all that is good about music and Simon Cowell is.... well, what can I say?
You're going to be asked to do a lot of their live material featuring their current singer Floor Jansen. I would recommend looking beyond that, not just going live but to the studio work as well. A lot of people seem to forget that, while Floor is spectacular and certainly the best singer for the band - and I in no way am discounting that, there are as well two other singers and a ton of material to work with. I guess what I'm saying is, if Floor is all you choose to do then, of course, it's your channel and I respect that, but if you ever get the itch to go off of the current craze, your viewers won't go anywhere, because it's Nightwish. Have fun and I'll watch your journey through Nightwish - Floor or otherwise. Cheers and stay safe!
It's not too difficult Xee, it's just (soft-ish) highly melodic metal full of hooks, with an orchestrated background. And in Nightwish's case flavoured with folk and prog and some gorgeous rock ballads. I won't repeat the many suggestions you will receive as to what else to react to if you choose to do that - and there are nine studio albums with a tenth coming soon. Only to warn that once you hit the 'start' button with Nightwish you will never stop. There are millions of people around the world, on every continent, that will testify to that. On reflection I will make a suggestion, my current favourite and an under-viewed video, the song 7 Days to the Wolves, Live at Barona Arena, Finland, 2015, Full HD Remastered. (Slightly different personnel from here). Audial and visual perfection. BTW this is the #1 live band in the world but unfortunately you can't see them right now because they are on hiatus. If and when you can, put everything else aside and ensure you do!

This band does not have a female singer but THE female singer. This is but a fraction of what Floor Jansen can do. At this concert she performs every song written for the two previous singers, Tarja Turunen (operatic 1996-2005) and Anette Olzon (pop 2007-2012). This is one reason why many ask for live as the first 7 albums didn't originally feature this singer and so many prefer her live singing.

Xee - and this is what music can do to you. Your brain disassociates itself from reality and you can't string a coherent sentence together. You are lost for words and all you can do is marvel and wonder at what you have just heard. There are no words to describe some music, nor do you need those words as the music takes care of that itself. Just listen, enjoy, and listen again.....

Oh, they are a metal band. Symphonic, yeah, but metal without doubt. Metal and beautiful are not mutually exclusive. The melodies and voice in this song steal your focus form the riffs and drumming.
Amy Lee makes you think Evanescence is a rock/pop band. Floor has a similar affect on Nightwish.
