Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

I'm 77. Looking at me, not many folks would think I like metal, either. But as a lover of classical music from age six, the synthesis that Nightwish (and others) provide was a wonderful surprise when I discovered symphonic metal in my 60's.
It has been the same with me. I am 65 and found Nightwish on UA-cam. I fell in love immediately and I am a big fan of this incredible band now. I also like bands like Epica or Leaves' Eyes but in Symphonic Metal Nightwish is on another level.
Me too. I was 59 (now almost 62) when I stumbled upon Nightwish and this song with my fellow Dutchy Floor Jansen. I knew then that I had finally found THE band, THE type of music, and THE singer I had been looking for without knowing it all my life. Never even imagined that to be any kind of Metal. I'm a very sensitive woman, so I didn't listen to anything Metal before, thinking it would be too loud, too overwhelming and not my thing at all, but none of that was true! I LOVE it.
To me it is the perfect blend of classical music and voice with Metal beat, and I feel my whole body move and react to it every single time I hear this song. It touches me profoundly, makes me happy, and it feels like a warm pair of arms holding me, surrounding me with loving, almost healing sound.

Also for me it is now THE band with great music and words, artists and - of course - singer. I admire Floor - she is at the same time strong and sensitive, a siren and an amazon, with one of the most beautiful and versatile voices I have ever heard. And a humble kind personality. Todays you have to look for a person like this for a long time.

Well, good metal of any kind is the most complex as whole form of music made these days. Sadly. Go check out Opeth. Especially their old. First stuff, to like 6-7 years ago, covers so many areas and playing, singing styles. From death metal at times to almost symphonic. In every song. And long ones. That are complex and great like Floyd.

Don't expect every Nightwish song to be like this one. Each song is different and each one an adventure. Try any live performances from different concerts and you'll hear how versatile they are. Lots of other commenters will give you all the information you want to know.
Wacken is in Germany, a well known festival with a lot of bands. That year Nightwish were the main band I would say. They played before a crowd of approximately 82.000 people. Floor (the singer) at that time was not yet officilay member of the band but just a fill-in singer for the last 10 months. Enjoy them because there is yet a lot to come if you so wish.
Well,she was officially ,together with Troy,a band member on June 2013 but, they made it public at the end of October 2013.😉

GLS @ Wacken 2013 is the platinum standard in epicness for every live performance in symphonic metal and similar metal genres. The big stage, the crowd, the sound, the pyrotechnics, Tuomas' grand composition, the delivery by the whole band, and of course Floor Jansen's on-stage presence and mindblowing voice. It helps that Floor hit all her notes strong and clean in this performance. It's one of these moments when everything comes together as if all stars aligned perfectly. 🤘🔥
It's great to see another Aussie discover Nightwish. I first heard this a few years ago and they instantly became the centre of my musical universe. You are right with the word "accessible"- they are metal but unlike anything else. They are their own genre - bombasticly melodic, while blending in styles such as celtic folk with themes driven by wonder, people and awe of the universe. The back catlogue is truly incredible. And that's just the band - don't even get me started on the gift to the world that is Floor Jansen! I hope there is more Nightwish to come on your channel because we Nightwish Army tragics love nothing more than to see the smiles on reactor's faces when they experience another great Nightwish song.

The US has been slowly discovering this gem from Finland. This song is very melodic and fits the name symphonic metal very well, but make no mistake, they are definitely a metal band. Which is why they were headlining Wacken Open Air, one of the biggest metal festivals in Europe in front of 82,000 people. For another gear, you might want to listen to Romanticide from the same concert. Enjoy🖤🤘🏽

Welcome to the world of the amazing Nightwish, and the Dutch queen of symphonic metal. You are correct in your commentary lovely lady. Nightwish fans include young children (especially girls) all the way to 80 year old men and women. All drawn together by the passionate love of metal with drama and beautiful melodies. It makes for a loving fan base who gather to celebrate epic music and poetic lyricism from this unique and special group of extremely talented musical ensemble. They do have some more aggressive songs, but only when the story calls for anger. Most of their music and lyrics reflect on yearning to recapture the lost innocence of youth, and the wonder and beauty of the human experience.
Gabriel Bardac should be by very soon to guide you on the journey if you decide to venture into the mind and soul of Tuomas Holopainen and his wonderful compositions.

I am 73 years old and from Texas and i have been a NIGHTWISH fan since 1999 and have seen them dozens of times in many different countries and in small venues to large open air festivals, and yes i was at this festival.

You really can’t go wrong with doing a reaction to any song from this concert. These songs will give you a good foundation to move into their later works. It’s all good.

When this was recorded Floor had been the replacement singer of Nightwish för just about 10 months. She did her first show in Seattle Wa on Oct 1st 2012 after the band fired Anette, their second singer. This was recorded Aug.3rd 2013.
This song wasn't on the set list for the tour originally since Anette didn't have the vocal ability to perform it. But Floor had heard the song when her first band After Forever" toured with Nightwish when Tarja, their first singer, was still in the band, and she loved it. So Floor asked Tuomas (the guy behind the keyboards) if they could make it a part of the set list. And they did, it was song number 13 of a 15 song set. There's som minor variations in the backing between Floors and Tarjas version, mainly that the choir have been reduced in volume. There's a video on youtube from, I think, Argentina, recorded Dec15th 2012. And there's one of Tarja doing it too. Tuomas keyboard stand is a tribute to a Sibelius monument in Helsinki. And the place is called Vacken if you pronounce it in English, In German W is pronounced as V, and V as F.
I was at Floors first show in Seattle…..place went bonkers when she came out on stage.

Floor Jansen (the Valkyrie Goddess) stands over 6 feet tall in bare feet, and she's wearing 4 to 5 inch heels here.......Tuomas Holopainen (the Metal Mozart) is the keyboardist, co-founder (in 1996), leader, guru, composer, lyricist, arranger, and producer of 95% of the band's music.....that was not water Empuu (the guitarist) was drinking; it was Corona......audience was an intimate little gathering of 82, 000.....the entire legendary show is available on both DVD and UA-cam under the title of "Showtime, Storytime".....Floor can sing Amy Lee under the table......Nightwish Army, South Carolina, USA

Symphonic Metal is the glorious mash up of symphonic composition, orchestral instruments, and heavy metal. Wacken Open Air is one of the biggest metal festivals in the world. Nightwish was headlining and their were 82,000 people at this performance. Wacken is normally a sleepy village in Germany. The bulls head (flaming here) is the logo of the festival because the area is a cattle ranching area most of the year. The unusual instruments you are referring to is the keyboardist's stand for his Korg keyboards. It is inspired by the Sibelius monument in Helsinki, Finland which honors Finlands greatest classical composer Jean Sibelius. The band is Finnish and their main composer and keyboardist, Tuomas Holopainen is a big fan. He is also a big fan of movie scores, Disney, and Hans Zimmer thus the cinematic quality of many of their songs. Tuomas also has a rack to hold a bottle of red wine in the stand. They are an amazing band and the Nightwish Army is an lovely group of people. Floor Jansen is their third female lead singer and has been singing in metal bands since she was 16 years old (1996). She is Dutch. She is also a vocal nerd who has studied and mastered just about every vocal technique and uses them to evoke the exact emotions Tuomas is going for. Wacken (pronounced Vakken) is a regular international metal festival held in Northern Germany. The crowd was around 82,000.
That "instrument" is just a decorative keyboard stand.
Nightwish, now still going strong after 28 years are from Finland, with a Dutch singer and an English member (not present for this song).
Some crazy facts about Wacken:
It's one of the biggest metal festivals in the world.
For this year's Wacken Festival 85,000 tickets were offered in advance. They were sold out in 4.5 hours.

Nightwish is in the sub-genre called Symphonic Metal. They write music using symphonic sounds recorded in London, also choral sounds, and of course metal. However, you will see other instruments used as well, such as the Uilleann pipes. The keyboard player is named Tuomas. The bass player is named Marco (he sings in some songs). Marco has now left the band for a medical issue. He is better now, but wants his life to remain less stressful. The guitar player is Empuu (practical joker). The drummer here was Jukka - he developed a medical condition (possibly due to the extreme motion while playing). Jukka now works for the band behind the scene. A new drummer named Kai was Jukka's pick as replacement. Not seen in this song is Troy. He plays multiple instruments including the aforementioned pipes and Troy sings as well.
This is Wacken Open Air (a festival), in Germany. This concert sold out a year in advance. At the time NW had a different lead singer, Anette Olzon. That singer was fired and Floor Jansen (this singer) was asked to complete the tour. A short time later, she was asked to be a permanent addition along with Troy. Both Floor and Troy are still with the band. They had to pause the last tour because Floor was VERY pregnant. Floor is VERY beloved among her fans. This concert had 82,000+ attendees. It is not uncommon for their concerts to sell out. They play around the world.
There's a commenter, I think his name is Gabriel Baldac, who you should watch for - he'll provide MUCH more comprehensive information. I was at this concert and one in Tampere, Finland (where the band is from) and Wembley concert in London. I should clarify that at the time of this concert the following band members were from Finland - Tuomas, Empuu, Jukka, and Marco. Floor is from The Netherlands, and Troy is from the UK. You should watch for songs from Buenos Aires because those audiences sing along well.
Every Song will be different, in some cases VERY different. Yet still within a style we love as fans - affectionately known as the Nightwish Army.

Originally Floor was sent by Allfather Odhinn to Midgard to gather the souls of fallen warriors to Valhalla, but she
got distracted and joined a series of bands. However, Floor still gathers souls by her grace, beauty and the sheer power
of her vocals.
We give thanks for her at our Blots regularly and hope that Odhinn won't notice that she has never returned to Asgard.

Welcome to the Nightwish Army from Canada. When General Gabriel posts he will have a glorious list of songs to react to. Many of us will suggest songs gladly and most will avoid the most difficult one until we feel you are ready. The only reason I say that is some have jumped in on that one, and find themselves lost. Great reaction! As for the guy "waiting around" it was the guitarist (Emppu Vuorinen) who is actually a very talented player, but he doesn't let his ego get in the way of a great performance. These musicians are all top notch and could pull solo projects if they wanted. Tuomas Holopainen - the keyboardist - is the main song writer. The drummer (Kai Hahto) has played for a lot of bands and the female vocalist (Floor Jansen) has fronted bands long before this.
This wasn't one of the songs where the bassist (Marco Hietala, sadly quit some time ago) got to sing but he's actually very good at it. Still fronts his own project and the band Tarot with his brother. Check Nightwish and "While your lips are still red" live at Wembley if you don't believe me.
Actually, this drummer is Jukka Nevalainen. He retired from touring around 2015, and he recruited his friend Kai Hahto to replace him. Jukka is the drummer for this entire show.

I saw Nightwish live in Birmingham UK in Nov 2022, I have seen many many bands, and I never thought that anyone could beat Iron Maiden and Muse for their live performances, happily Nightwish proved me wrong. 😊

It is always a pleasure to see another discover Nightwish and to be completely entranced by out Valkyrie Queen Floor.
This performance was relatively early on in Floor's time as the bands lead vocalist. I felt watching this for the first time that last section of the song where Floor raises her hand as she sings was moment she took command of the German Divsions (and visitors) of the Nightwish Army.
For me Storytime from the same event Wacken 2013 might be a nice next step.😉😂🤟

Operatic is not the word I would use, it is symphonic metal after all. To me it is a mix between metal song and a movie score, which are both some of my favorite musical genres.
They record with a live full orchestra and choir in the studio, then live they play backing tracks using a computer.

It's called symphonic metal, and that is the best band doing it! They're really tight, and the 82,000 people loved them. Floor, the singer can sing a regular song, growl, and go full blown opera! Every song of this legendary concert is killer! Welcome!

I'm 68 and found Nightwish about a month or so ago. I watch them over and over and over. I get goosebumps EVERY time I listen to Nightwish.
if you don't know Nightwish, they are a Finnish band with a dutch singer (also the honorary title of Forest Beast), and they fill stadiums across the world.

I saw them live at Wembley in November 2022 and it was the most amazing experience. To hear more from them, I suggest you follow Gabriel's list or pick and mix from it. I have followed Nightwish for some time now and have just about every Nightwish recording, live and studio and not a single track I don't like.

My wife is not into metal at all and when I was going to see them live she came along partly because she like all kinds of live music but mainly to keep me company. The band record the orchestral parts with the London philharmonic orchestra, all the parts written by Keyboardist and main songwriter Tuomas Holopainen. Live Tuomas plays as much as he can on the keys, what he physically can't is on backing tracks . Great reaction, this band are ridiculously versatile so if you go down the rabbit hole you will have a wild ride 🤘

welcome to the fantastic symphonic metal universe of Nightwish Band, their live performances are some of the things that come so close to epic that they get to be mythical and of course Floor Jansen, queen of the stage and goddess of music, she can sing anything in any musical style she wants (WARNING! her voice, her stage presence, her charisma, in one word: her "spell" is highly addictive).
this concert (wacken 2013) is incredibly epic and deserves to be watched and reacted entirely, song by song, in particular I suggest these three songs: "song of myself", "storytime" and "ever dream"
this performance of "ghost love score" is one of the three best performances of the nightwish band, together with "the poet and the pendulum" from 2015 concert at the london wembley arena and "the greatest show on earth" from 2015 concert in tampere - finland (actually there is a fourth best performance: "dead boy's poem" from the 2018 concert in buenos aires).

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on UA-cam. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered UA-cam in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turns 7 years this march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

One thing I did like about this performance, besides the incredible musicianship, is indeed the fact that they attract a wide range of people from all walks of life. And that there's a significant compliment of female fans, which is not always the case at many metal concerts lol. One normally thinks of sweaty dudes with beards and jean jackets, but here we see a much more diverse, and dare I say mature audience.
We all fell in love with Floor of course, and for good reason. Not only is she immensely talented as a singer, but her heart and soul are equally wonderful hehe. She has every right to be a diva, yet she could not be more opposite of what that word suggests.
Definitely check out the other Nightwish suggestions already posted, but also explore her wider catalog of solo projects. She has an album out with songs that are more in line with what I would call the European "adult contemporary" sound, which are all fantastic. There are appearances on European shows that showcase her amongst other popular European performers which are well worth seeking out (Beste Zangers and a German one whose name escapes me in particular).
Another metal band you may want to check out that manages to challenge one's expectations about the genre is Babymetal. J-pop vocals set against heavy metal backing, with three nice young Japanese girls (now young women - they started out as tweens(!)) singing and dancing to death metal lol.
Greetings from a Nightwish fan in New Zealand. There are so many other great Nightwish songs. Here's a few suggestions: Romanticide, Nemo, Dead Boy's Poem, Sleeping Sun, Storytime, Phantom of the Opera, Shoemaker, Gethsemane, Greatest Show on Earth, How's the Heart, Poet and the Pendulum.
