What options are good to take? What species works best? As well as answering the question of whether it's good or best left at home! Let's discuss it and find out.

Shillelagh + booming blade + war caster ... just saying 🙂
Oh dear... Got too caught up on using wisdom that I forgot about booming blade and green flame blade! Thanks for bringing it up.
also as feats, I'd suggest Fey touched for Misty step and/or Shadow touched for Wrathful smite (which is now a necromancy spell) - granted, there would be a bit of a traffic jam on that bonus action, but at least you would have options 🙂
@@2ndlevelfighter IMO id just go true strike since it fixes the problem by itself and doesnt take up two cantrip slots or cut into your rounds to set up since shillelagh costs your bonus action, and stacking shillelagh with true strike is pointless since true strike already lets you use your wisdom modifier and you can potentially use it with a weapon that does more than a d8 with no magic bonus ever
Amazing dip for rogues as it opens up the lesser known rogue tech of off turn sneak attack by using your bonus action to sneak attack then holding your action to sneak attack after your turn ends
Thinking of starting as a fighter to get heavy armor, and martial training without getting protector. I also get constitution saving throughs without taking a feat for it.
I also get a fighting style and weapon property. Could get dueling. Throwing hand axe to get vex and nick, and then throwing with knife. After then can use club during bonus action. Want to fight with weapons using wepion mastery properties and ability to use magic boost.
Might be a human, and start with druid and wizard magic initiate. Get true strike, shillelagh, shield, find familiar, thorn whip and shocking grasp. Get war caster at level 4. That way familiar helps me hit on first attack, I can cast shillelagh on club and sometimes use true stick with it.
Want to be Buffy, hard hitter, use magic and have a pet. Also want enemies to focus on me and not anyone else.
In the 2014 rules there where some ambiguity to whether or not a concentration spell duplicated with Wish requires concentration, but in the 2024 rules in the new Player Handbook they made it 100% clear when cast Wish to duplicate another spell, it's only the requirements to cast that spell you don't need to meet. Concentration isn't a requirement to cast a spells, it's a requirement for some spells to remain active. There is no ambiguity anymore you need to maintain concentration on a concentration spell duplicated with Wish.
That's a bit sad. But thank you for pointing it out.
@@2ndlevelfighter At least it's a good thing that they made it clear in the rules, so people don't have to guess anymore.
@@sortehuse 100% agreed!
I love your idea for a Kobold build. I'm definitely using that.
War Cleric Rogue. Bonus action Sneak attack, hold action to attack when ally attack an enemy for off turn Sneak Attack.
You mean hold action to true strike :)
@@brannenpfister2579 Either cast True Strike or make an attack with a finesse weapon.
@@brannenpfister2579notable thing for that if you ready action for a spell you need to concentrate on it
@@lucasramey6427 shouldn’t really matter since you won’t really be concentrating on anything
You can do the same with Battlemaster Fighter dip also. It could be done since 2014 rules.
Take the Riposte Maneuver(reaction attack when an enemy hits you) and if 2014 material is allowed you also take the Brace Maneuver(reaction attack when an enemy enters your reach). You can even couple these 2 with the Sentinel Feat(reaction attack when an enemy hits someone other than you).
This gives you 3 decents triggers on your reaction to go off and give you an additional Sneak Attack per Round.
While the triggers are not covering as many possible options to set off your Sneak Attack as a Ready Action might do, going Battlemaster over War Cleric gives you 4 superiority dices to use on level 3, so you can try 4 times to set off the extra Sneak Attacks, unlike the War Cleric whos Bonus Action Attack Feature is bind on your Wisdom Modifier, forcing you to invest into an Ability Score that you might no want to.
If ultimately ppl are going the War Cleric dip route and investing heavily on Wisdom and Dex, it might even be a decent idea to take 1 level in Monk for the Dex + Wis Unarmored Defense Feature.
Truestrike, firebolt, and Shield are under magic initiate wizard. Go human, or take the sage background. Voila. Perfect wardomain cleric
The problem with using Firebolt and True Strike is that they don't work with Potent Spellcasting, because it only work with Cleric Cantrips. You could pick Divine Strike instead and that would work with True Strike.
@@sortehuse You still get Blessed Strikes from True Strike and I believe Tashas actually has some optional rules to have a middle ground.
@@floofzykitty5072 If you play by the rules in the 2024 Players Handbook then those rules replace the the options in Tasha's ... unless you can convince your DM otherwise of cause.
The primary job of a cleric (even a war cleric) isn't to delivery damage with melee attacks anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Great Vid! Apart from the Bonus action traffic jam I love the War Cleric - I think definitely getting Magic Initiates Wizard and Druid is the best way forward to really lean into Wisdom based attacks, sort of like a divinely focused combatant, not often but every attack hurts.
(also do you have south Asian heritage? every now and then I think I hear an accent on certain words but I'm not sure!)
Thanks for the comment! I am South African, but the the accent definitely comes out at times.
The war cleric will always suffer heavily from not having extra attack. In 5e I'd pickup Twighlight, Peace, or Life over it, just to name a few. In 5.5 trickery has it beat as well. The War Cleric's best feature is the free shield of faith, but that's not enough to carry a subclass
I want to argue with you as I love the idea of a War Priest. Still, you are correct. While it is better, 2 things I think War Domain should have is eventually extra attack. They serve a combat focused deity, Granted to make it better for the other classes, I would be fine if it wasn't till say level 8. I also think they should have a version of inspiring leader. Clerics often lead their faithful people, so it only make sense there will be times the cleric will be at least inspiring their faithful to be successful in combat.
What do people think about the home brew that gets rid of war chargers for extra attack at lv6?
honestly based, not like two attacks is gonna break anyones bank with how busted the new rules are, people are out here doing conjure minor elementals with scorching rays and quickened spell eldritch blast
I think I'd much rather replace the first feature with gaining a fighting Style and/or weapon mastery.
Or, instead of making another attack as a bonus action, commanding an ally to make an attack as a bonus action
No cleric (and paladin and other holy symbol shield users)do not benefit from he "no free hand casting" par of War caster. You can inscribe you holy symbol on your shield for 5GP (p226 PhB 2024) and the hand holding the holy symbol (the shield) can also be used to do the somatic component (p237 Phb 2024)
Warcaster remain interesting if you want to cast a spell as your reaction, (especially if your DM allows the new shenanigans where you could cast cure wound on an allies who move out of your treathen zone since Attack of Opportunity no longer specifies (hostile creature) and for the advantage on concentration. But advantage on concentration isn't that great. Sure as long as the monster hit for less then 20 damage, advantage is great, since you little +3 constitution bonus is enough to pass the concentration check. But once monster start to hit for 40+damages per hits the concentration DC start to rise toward the 20's and your +3, even with advantage isn't that good anymore. Resilience Constitution giving you proficiency in constitution saving throw (and therefore concentration check) is a lot more useful, since you now go up to +7/+8 giving you a much better chance to succeed that DC 20.
Good catch! I prefer war caster on a melee cantrip user but resilient is much better for concentration checks.
gotta say i really hate that Tempest cleric isnt in the new PHB.. was always my favorite cleric subclass
Ah yes, I can play Warhammer 4k in dnd. Best feature ever
You should do a Eldridge night fighter next
"Play a Trickster Cleric instead" there I fixed it
Maybe you want to play a badass Dwarven Cleric with a massive Maul then the War Domain would be only Domain to make sense.
