Real estate speculation by foreigners is making impossible for locals to buy or rent a house

THIS. And it needs to be stressed that it is not FOREIGNERS per se (outside Algarve and Lisbon, MAYBE), because there just are not enough of of them to make such an enormous difference. It is not people moving to Portugal to live. It is outside capital investments trying to SPECULATE on properties.

The problem with the out of control tourism that's has been plaguing Portugal for the past few years, plus letting in hordes and hordes of third worlders without any control is a bigger problem than some americans or brits buying houses.

This article is a little generic. Anyone moving to another country has to face the fact - IT’S NOT LIKE HOME, DOROTHY! Here in EUROPE we have multiple cultures, multiple languages, multiple climates and all changing within a few hundred kilometres in some cases. In the USA there a similar concept but the homogeneity of its culture provides the feeling of not having really traveled beyond its borders. Bottom line - want it like “home”, then stay at home! It’s not difficult.

With such low wages, things have to be affordable. I lived in Portugal a few years ago, and I absolutely hated it. The country is absolutely beautiful. My biggest issue was the people. I found them cold and racist. They are all about their colonial past.
Americans tend to romanticize Europe. I would
not trade the US for Portugal. The US has a lot of issues, but no place is perfect.

Oh yes, the US is a symbol of social equality….not. Whilst Portugal does have a colonial past and indeed there are people who show intolerance, that is not to say that ALL Portuguese are racist. In the US on the other hand, social tensions (color based) are part of mainstream news reports.
Sorry to hear you had bad experiences, truly.

Hi Teddy Boy - Almost all foreigners say that the portuguese people is kind and helpfull, there are exceptions ,of course but you are really very "original, one of a kind ... what did you do at Portugal wrong, maboy ? Yes we were colonialists, yes we are proud of our History, and you ? are you proud of the imperial USA, the racism as a white culture ? Talk about your people!

      1. U.S. healthcare is rated much lower than Portugal's.
      2. Weather in The Algarve is almost as excellent as Southern California's, but Southern Portugal housing costs roughly 70% less.
      3. Internet and cell phone services are also better rated and prices are approximately 70% less.
      4. U.S. health insurance is approximately 7 times higher and coverage is mediocre - some U.S. citizens actually go bankrupt from medical expenses and others manage crippling medical debt.
      5. With those benefits, a U.S. citizen can live better on a small pension, annuity, 401k, or other passive income.
      6. The EU bans countless chemicals in food that the U.S. EPA allows in U.S. food production, contributing to rising U.S. cancer and obesity rates.
      7. Legal residency in Portugal allows a U.S. citizen to conveniently travel throughout Europe and to ultimately attain Portuguese citizenship and a more accepted/respected passport.
      8. Portugal doesn't have MAGA.
      9. The U.S. peaked 15 years ago; Portugal is on the rise. (just compare the 2 county's debt to GDP levels)

    • @liquid_metal
      @liquid_metal 6 днів тому

@@jamesuhl3995 8 and 9 are foolish. Liberals are as bad if not worse than "MAGA", whatever that is. I suppose the leftist media has made you think right is bad and left is good, which ironically, the opposite is nearer the truth.
As for 9, that is true of Western Civilization and actually, it peaked late 90s. PT is Western. It's going down with the empire, hence things like inflation and the cost of living going so high, like every Western country.

Most Americans are simply too inexperienced at adjusting to foreign environments to suddenly pick up and move to another country with a different language and culture. Portugal is a society with a strong sense of its own identity and customs and not exactly dying to meet American retirees or people trying to live on the cheap. Of course this is also true of other european countries, but Portugal is perhaps more provincial and less open than most.

You're annoyed with local life-style yet expect them to carry the burden for you and smile?? Apartments are not nice cause you can't afford the good ones? I admire the audacity.

Really well done video, as an immigrant I feel represented in many of those feelings. Emigrating is definitely not for everyone, an idealized thought that probably won't come true. The important thing at all times is, regardless, to love the country that somehow welcomes us or the one we have chosen to emigrate to. If the balance indicates that it is better to return or change countries, pack our bags and move forward in search of what we want, for us and our children.

Man, I can't watch this video and not think that you have something against Brazil.
For foreigners, paying for a private healthcare system is so cheap and they will have access to great quality.
Not to mention that he will have access to the best of Brazil due to the fact that the currency has a large difference in value, allowing him to go to the best restaurants and have access to the best accommodation.
Crime is present in the lower social classes, meaning if you are going to the right places you won't have any problems.
What I think is bad is in relation to electronics that are very expensive here, like a TV or an Apple smartphone due to import taxes.

And there are far too many Portugese tyrants in America. They come here and expect to dictate others lives. The conservative Portugese woman is a nightmare and so full of arrogance. The Potugese men here are no better. They let the women demean them and then go get drunk to drown their sorrows, come home and get the ever livin shite beat out of them by the wife. I would trade you any day.
