Those clips on the cabelas vest are for clipping pieces of sandpaper for conditioning calls
Nah - that's a roach clip ;-}
Exactly.. beat me to it :)
@@reedwacker2090 That's what I say. For the blunt.
The clips in the vest are called 'roach clips'...they are for medicinal purposes...
These were simpler times!
Haha - I love how Aaron's vest seemed endless, I guess I'm not the only one carrying around half a store in the woods! A quick tip/suggestion - toss the TP and get yourself a travel pack of flushable baby wipes. The package is easier to find in your vest and the wipes double as quick hand cleaners, which can be especially useful in the field if you get into something nasty and/or into some poison ivy/oak/sumac.
I've seen a lot more stuff than that in a turkey vest - multiple calls of each type etc. They go pretty light in my opinion. I go out with just 2 mouth calls in my shirt pocket and water in my side pants pockets sometimes.
And Ted's gonna have to change his number now
Gosh I hope people leave him be
So tempted to put Ted's # on a Craigslist add!
J.D. Hall don’t be a dick
That's what I thought.. Poor guy.
Remington 870 express is great for turkey's. I've tried a ton of different shotguns: Browning, Benelli, Winchester, and Mossberg. Remington 870 is the best and easiest to take apart and clean. Comes with three choke tubes.
The bungee with the alligator clip is to hold sand paper and roughing pads friction calls 👍 also the Savage 301 in 410 or 20ga is a great gun!
those tallies are made by cabela's employees to denote status of bargain cave items, but jake's interpretation is cooler.
I’m gonna add tally’s to my vest then. New vest for 2021 and I have 2 TN birds to add so far.
My vest content
Gloves-one pair of HS Struts, one pair of rubber
Mask- some HS Struts mask that came with my gloves
Calls- I use Tipton Creek Turkey calls. Mostly because they're made in my hometown, and they're a great group of guys. I have 4 mouth calls in a case, a box call, a custom slate call my wife got me for Christmas, and 2 locators, an owl and crow.
Shells- I shoot Remington Nitros, I have at least 6 shells on me in addition to the 3 in my gun.
Thermocell-nobodys missing any season from west nile virus, if you are, you need to reevaluate your gear
Pen and pencil- I actually just bought a fisher space pen to toss in my vest, it literally writes in any condition.
Multitool- I carry a Gerber MP 600, because I have a stockpile of them. One in my work bag, one in my hunting pack, one in my truck, one in my wife's car, and one in the junk drawer in my kitchen.
Knife-I carry 3 actually. A Gerber Gator on my belt in a sheath, a Gerber Gator gut hook fixed on my belt, and a Vital folder with extra blades in my vest.
Skoal-Fine cut, the only stuff I dip.
Snacks- usually venison bologna, crackers, and some kind of candy. I'm hypoglycemic, so if I get the shakes in the woods I'm screwed.
Binos- I have a small pair of 10×42 Bushnells I keep in my vest.
Water-I bring usually a bottle with me, but I also have a life straw and roll up bottle in my vest, because if I run out I can refill.
Fire- I keep a Bic, Matches, and Ferro Rod in my vest, because getting lost can happen.
Lights- I have a headlamp and handheld light with extra batteries.
Toilet paper- self explanatory
First Aid- I keep an IFAK in the back pouch of my vest, I'm a paramedic who also teaches wilderness medicine classes, so I keep in stocked with things that I could need if I roll an ankle, ect as well as control ABC's
Permethrin and a thermacell will deal with the bugs. Plus, permethrin is scent free after it dries. Use a big zip loc sandwich freezer bag to keep your TP in. Keeps it dry during rain storms and also keeps it from falling apart as well. I keep a small zip loc freezer bag for my phone, wallet, licenses and other things that can be damaged if i happen to fall in streams. Given how much you guys use boats too. I'd consider keeping one in my vest. Plus, on the boat, keep a change of clothes in a sealed bag just in case. I went in jan 4th. One year. Near 0 degrees. Would've been in serious trouble had i not had a change of clothes. Good luck!
Hard to beat Remington pump 20 gauge with a Jebs choke for a low cost gun and reliable. I see alot people carrying around rolls of toilet paper and I like buying small pack of baby wipes because there light and take up less room than a roll.
An 870 is a quiet pump and best for turkey; the forend doesnt rattle as much as other pumps.
Stevens 301, 20 or 410. Pretty sweet little gun
Get the .410. I am interested to see how the federal TSS loads work. It would be really easy to lug around.
+1 on the Stevens
I have a Black Stevens 301 single shot in 12 gauge. Light and Can Kick.
Gonna make it down to Florida! North or south Florida?
Yes it is cheap and deadly accurate with the right choke and ammo
I have a cabelas vest too and I found that the little clamps in the front of the vest work good for holding sand paper. Then I’m not digging in my vest to find it when I need it.
Yes that is what it for
Those clips are for sandpaper or Brillo pads for conditioning calls and strikers
16 more days here in Tennessee Thank God for draw tags and bonus birds. Good luck this spring guys can’t wait to watch y’all bust some heads.
I recommend a Rem 870 express 12 ga. Jake. Lots of after market barrels and choke tubes out there. Put sling swivels on it (Mike's) and sling it up. Currently I have a 20 inch rifle sight barrel with a 1 inch extended turkey tube. I put glow sights on it to help me keep my head down and focus on tky noggins. I've shot a lot of 3" 2 oz Federal 4's but moved to 3" 1 7/8th oz 5's. Really don't think one needs $4-$6 a shot loads. Box calls are hard to beat unless it's wet. I like an old slate and peg for close range clucks and purrs.
Academy sports had a sale on remington 870 with the 28 inch barrel & laminated wood stock for $259, I live in TN but the sale could still be on where you guys reside. I jumped on it & got the Carlson's longbeard xr .660 choke & now I'm popping targets at 60 yds with the longbeard xr 3 in #4, I'm talking 22 pellets in the head & neck at 60 of #4. Dang nice set up for around what $320 $330 not to shabby, Good luck fellas & God Bless y'all & ALL our fellow hunter Brother's & Sisters!
Absolutely love love My Thermacell.....Use It Every Where.....Even Sitting Outside on The Porch With Friends...
Mossberg Maverick 88 12ga and some camo Krylon. Takes model 500 chokes and barrels.
at 199.99 can't beat them.
Winchester SXP 20 gauge. Got one for my 12 year old from cabelas for 449. Comes with 24” barrel with tru-glow sights and an xtra full tube. Nice little gun
The clip of the cord is for conditioner pads for your slate/ glass calls and the tally marks might be from the bargain cave it was a way to designate cave items from floor items when I worked there
THP!!!Coming to the Hoosier state for Turkey Hunting!!! Indiana,, nice Morgan Monroe State Forest,, closs to Hoosier National both in southern Indiana loaded with Turkey weekdays like any where else are low hunting pressure and usually after the first week you don't see a whole lot of hunters out.. Jake the Stevens 20 gauge pump walmart special 150.00$ and a heavy shot choke with Winchester longboard xr 6 shot is a Turkey killing machine good out to at least 45 to 50 yards.. I have used mine for 3 seasons my longest shot was 48 yards check it out
Remington 870 with Indian creek choke. That will do the trick every time!
870 WingMaster… Not Express.
I won a tri-star upland hunter over and under 20 gauge at a NWTF banquet the other day. I will put a turkey choke in the top barrel so I can use it for longer shots and see which choke that came with the gun will work better for shorter shots and won't be such a tight pattern to possibly miss at shorter distance. It will be nice to be able to choose which barrel I want to use for the situation. Its lighter and shorter than my 870. It will be fun to play with, you might consider an over and under.
The alligator clip with the cord is for sand paper for your slate call
When purchasing a Turkey gun, I'd strongly recommend against cheap. I have a mossberg 835 ulti mag and last year bought a Remington versa max sportsman Turkey model. I'll never go back to the mossberg. The gas inertia semi automatic shotguns are the way to go. Buy once and be happy with the purchase rather than saving a few dollars and wishing you had bought something different.
Tye Burleigh can’t beat an 870
@@efferm , 870 are solid guns for the price. There are better options, if your budget allows you to upgrade. I try to buy the best I can afford within reason. Thought about Benelli, but couldn't quite justify $2,000 to shoot 2 to 4 birds a spring. I'm happy with the Versa Max.
This video was so helpful as I’m a new hunter! Thank you!
I recommend the Federal TSS. Patterns great with a Primos turkey choke
I decided to try out the Tristar Raptor semiauto 12 gauge. Man, I love this gun! Less than $400 for a semiauto that absolutely does everything I need. No issues whatsoever. Picked it up a Walmart of all places. Added a Carlson’s LongBeard XR turkey choke and some LBXR 3” #5’s and I’m in business!
Tip - Put a small bottle of hand sanitizer in the tube of a partial role of high quality TP and then seal it in a quart ziplip bag.
Put your TP in a plastic ziplock bag. Helps keep it together and dry
McDonald's, Starbucks, or Panera (or other unbleached)napkins in a ziplock bag are great for "nature calls". They're already portioned, no fumbling with the roll. They darker muted color doesn't scream,"Somebody took a dump here!!!", if you don't get it buried completely.
The little tweezer thing is for your conditioning pads for your pot calls
I looked for a good vest for a long time. I mainly just wanted a good seat with a few pockets. I ended up getting the Knight and Hale RNG 200 and I love it
I know I'm 2 years late but Jake if you want the cheapest most convenient gun of all time, look for a rossi trifecta. I prefer the youth version because I hunt thick timber. But you get a small game rifle, shotgun, and deer rifle all in one. What more could you ask for ?
My recommendation for a good quality inexpensive 20 gauge would be a Mossberg I have two one in synthetic stock and one wood they have worked great for me for about 20 years. They usually come with three chokes and a slug barrel for deer.
the clips for sand paper for conditioning calls so when you pull out your slate it doesn't fall out on the ground and also makes it easy to condition a call in a pinch easy to locate the paper on mine I have a piece of sand paper and the conditioning pad both clipped on that way I can sand the call fill it over and do both easily
THP drops a video and there I was, rocking my 12 hour old daughter 👍👍👍
New fans everyday, boys!
Congrats to you and momma.
When I used to dig clams, we got candy apple blue model car spray paint, don't shake it much so you get the clear blue, spray the lens of the head lamp. As long as your looking down, you can see where your going and what your doing but others can't see the light unless you look at them. Why did we do that you might ask? The good clams are in closed area's, had to make a livin' in Maine, it wasn't easy. Might work for turkey?
Hard to beat an 870. There's a reason they have been around for so long. No frills, just results
You want cheap ? I use a Stevens 320 12 gauge pump $150 at Walmart 2 years ago . Topped of with a Carlsons extended turkey choke $30 . Glad to hear y’all headed to my home state.Mississippi 🙌
Not bottom of the barrel cheap, but definitely the most affordable semi i have is the Weatherby SA-08 in 20ga... LOVE that gun. Light enough to carry for days, simple enough to rig up for turkey hunting... and although i've never been able to get it patterned for 40 yard shots, inside 35 yards it's never failed me yet.
H&R 1871 Turkey 12 gauge 24" barrel drilled and tapped about $300. Remington 870 Express Turkey if you want a pump $415.
Got a mossberg 20gauge bantam for my kid and pretty much stole it. Light, easy to swap onto the opposite shoulder with the red dot i put on it so if a turkey comes in at the wrong angle he still gets creamed. Great patterns with longbeard XR.
I already have several spots hot and ready in Mississippi on public land for this weekend. Don’t cut me off on a hot bird!!
Good luck guys!!
try buying a 20 ga. 870 youth model. remington makes a great turkey barrel for it then try different chokes. that’s probably the cheapest way for a really good setup.
That's the setup I use. Remington 870 20g. youth model with a Carlson Longbeard choke and Winchester XR #5's. The last turkey I shot at was 48 yards...and he tasted good when I battered him up with Panko and Tony Chachere's.
I'm pretty sure those clips in the pockets are for your sandpaper or other call conditioners. At least that's what I use mine for. Makes it a little quicker to scratch your call if birds aren't far.
I just got the Same Vest as Ted!!! It’s nice & light!!!👌 Jake Is look at the New Winchester SXP line....Pretty cheap & very dependable!!!
I just purchased one in 20 gauge this year for Turkeys....Got Tired of toting around my old heavy 870 12 gauge especially with today’s ammo!!! I can out shoot my 12 with the TSS loads vs Longbeard XR with way less bulk!!!😉 I looked at the 870’s again but they just aren’t as good as the older ones!!! Another sleeper & slick gun if you want a cheap dependable semi auto is the TRI STAR either 20 or 410 I will be getting a TRI STAR 410 before long only $430 bucks for a gas driven Semi Auto is hard to beat!!!!!....Good out to 40 yards with TSS!!! Good luck this Season!!!!!👍🏻
I bought a Stevens 20ga last year for like 200 bucks and I had no problem taking a Tom down. Great gun, honestly
Jake that thing you asked about in your vest, I'm not sure if this is the right purpose but I use to hold my sand paper for my slates so its easy to find.
.410 Tristar viper g2 semiauto, if ya willing to spend a bit more, has benelli/beretta mobile choke system. Just picked up this gun and a Carlson's TSS .410 turkey choke. Cant wait for the season to open for this challenge!
I have a bino harness, a backpack, and a hand Warmer I wear for deer, and as with Turkey, I am with warb, never know just how long those hunts may become.
20 gauge. I bought a mossberg maverick 88 for my kids and put a Carlson choke on it. Less than $200 and it shoots pretty good
A Treestand seat cushion works well for a improvised turkey vest seat
One quick tip i learned, put the TP in a ziplock bag, keep it from getting soggy on those rainy damp days
I second this! Also another zip lock with baby wipes!
Gotta keep that TP in a sandwich bag make it water proof!
I second the 870 20 ga Express advice, at under $300 almost anywhere. Get a kick-eez pad if you want to use 3"/ 1.5 oz tss loads. I use a trulock tss7 choke.
Mossberg SA 20. 500.00 out the door. Great little gun that I highly recommend for all things you may need a 20 gauge for. Enjoyed the video and good luck this year.
Pretty hard to go wrong with the 870 youth 20 gauge. 21" barrel, and I put the Remington sure shot stock on it. I use the carlson 575 choke with no ports or wadcatcher designed for federal flight control wads. Averages 180 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards with the now discontinued federal heavyweight 7 shells. Only have four of those shells left then I guess I'll swap to the TSS.
Pretty hard to beat a remington 870 if you're looking for an affordable work horse of a shotgun.
I don't know what it is about me or mine but it does not shoot where I point it. Probably something to do with gun fit...
H&R 3” 12 gauge with full choke & good pad on the stock. Put a stick on rear sight on it. It kicks but will reach out there & touch’em.
I like the idea of the tape however on the face of the vest looks like a turkey eye sore!!! Ted found that out in Mississippi.
the clip is for sand paper for conditioning I think. I recommend a sxp Jake
The tallies in the vest from Cabela's was put there by Cabela's. It's a mark to say it's a bargain cave item, this way cashiers know if it's actually a bargain cave item or not.
At scheels in desmoines theres a savage single shot 20 gauge turkey specail comes with the choke in it already and a reddot
stevensmodel 301 from green top out doors. it was 230 after sling and ammo. single shot hold a good pattern at 30 yard for a 20
The Cabela's ad for their turkey vest says "A tethered alligator clip affixed to the inside of the pocket holds sandpaper or a scouring pad." So you'll be prepared to rough up your slate call, or to scrub the pot back at camp. :)
Highly recommend the Thermocell. Skeeters are already coming out in MS. I’m sure they’ll be bad. Come see me at Sportsmans Warehouse in Southaven, MS when y’all make it to the state this year.
Just get a Maverick 88 if you want a cheap turkey gun. Can't beat it for the price and if you ever wanna upgrade buy parts from a 500. Also the Browning invector choke tubes are the same as 88 and 500 barrels.
Hydration bladder is the way to go. Fill mine half full of ice and rest cold water. Have cold water most of the day
Remington 870 for sure. I own one in 20 and one in 12 and love them both
Savage stevens 410 single shot !!!
If you all start at the beginning of turkey season, the entire THP crew could be rocking mullets by deer season. The Year Of The Mullet.
For a 20 gauge turkey gun I can’t not recommend the Remington 1187 20 gauge enough. Awesome gun for me I use it for everything it’s awesome highly recommend it!!!
The string thing with the metal at the end is where u put ur sand paper
Mossberg 500 combo in the 20 gauge is amazing
I don't even turkey hunt yet and I'm watching every minute.
I bet you can find a good used one at a pawn shop or gun dealer. If not you can never go wrong with the Remington 870. Get the Magnum so you can shoot the 3" shells.
the clips on my vest at least are used for clipping your car keys to them so you don't loose em running through the woods
Walmart Charles daily or tristar for your cheap shotgun challenge..I personally use a 12ga stoger pump with a factory stoger Turkey choke..but I won it at the northeast IA ducks unlimited banquet a few yrs ago so that's why I use that particular shotgun for turkeys..but I can say I absolutely love it
H&R Pardner Pump for $180 at Sportsmans Warehouse. Been using one for three years and it's yet to fail me!
Hey Jake, Ted's not answering... Zip lock bag for your TP Aaron, keeps it from looking like a squirrel got into your pack. Also, baby wipes... Can't wait to see what's next.
The Mr Fox hunting vest is the best vest ever made
Jake, get you a Mossberg Maverick 88. Takes Tru Glo choke and truglo sights. I got mine for less than $100 plus the choke. Never missed.
rem. 11-87 with a cabelas .665 choke shooting 6 shot nitro turkeys, been my setup since i was 10
Made the plunge and invested in TSS today 😬 also, Ted at the show I told you I expected a solid upper lip sweater this spring. I don’t know if you grow a slow stache, but you don’t have much time bud
Stevens 301 .410 extra full removable choke. Picked mine up for $170.
Pretty sure the gator clips are for a diaphragm call so if you want it to be easily accessible you can clip it on there.cool setups
Where's Zac & Greg's set-ups? They already head South and kick-off the Turkey Tour?
Walmart H&R 20 guage was my first turkey gun. Killed 12 long beards some jakes and few hens with it. I sold it only because I wanted a 12 gauge. Another great thing is the gun cost 180 dollars plus choke tube and sights
Mossberg 935 12 ga...use factory choke and Longbeards #5 or #6
3 1/2" ...65 yrds all day...and I recognized where yall been in Choccolocco on 540 road lol on that sharp curve...planning on hitting that spot before yall get there lol...i put a Hunting Public sticker on my back glass
Get a Rossi .410....it comes with a .22 barrel also
I haven’t seen a box call yet ,,, well I guess everyone doesn’t know that a box call is the best. Ha ha ha
Jake if your looking for a cheap option I have been very impressed with the tristar semi auto raptor from Wal-Mart under $200 with a banelli full turkey choke $20 amazon. Keeps me from beating up my browning or changing chokes. Ted needs a new # LOL cant wait for turkey tour
I like the 835 mossberg. Great for Waterfoul and turkeys
Got my long beard shirt and decal today. Thanks guys....
GUN SUGGESTIONS: Hard to get a cheaper and more efficient gun than the Stevens 301 turkey. They are available in .410, 20, and 12ga. I have the 12, kicks like a mule but I love using longbeard xr in it. Shotgun was 160$ online.
Mossberg Maverick 88 the academy $180 turkey gun. Killed a big Tom and a coyote with it. With the Charlson’s Long Beard XR Choke it’s deadly.
That ending got me wondering if y'all are gonna make a I Hunt Everywhere Man parody lol
Good gun is a Stevens moddle .410 full choke
Just stumbled across this … great vid guys!
Funny! Down in the description for Jakes vest it’s says cabelas out fit her instead of outfitter. I’m assuming typo or funny joke lol
