What a great initiative! I don't know if the UK has such projects yet, but here in Belgium we have a few government funded projects where volunteers pick up litter with those claw thingies and trash bags and the government pays to safely dispose of the litter and reduce overall trash when possible. They also pay for the trash bags. Most volunteers also sort there stuff first, so glass and cans and such are recycled, but if they decide not to, there are also volunteer stations that will do that. It's becoming very popular here and in my street alone there are almost 20 volunteers! I sadly can't go help as much due to my disabilities making it near impossible to bend over so often and from a muscle disease those claw things aren't really an option either as I can't grip them well enough. I do try to do my part, though and recycle and re-use every way I can and buy things with no/recyclable packaging if possible. My animals have quite a few enrichment games I made out of what would have been trash (with some help ofc). Bottlecaps for example are great for a sniffing box if cleaned and not sharp or even just to hide things under! Another popular one is a plastic bottle with holes in that I toss treats into, so they have to roll it around to get the treats.
When I watched this video, it brought me memories of when I first participated in community service. I didn't pick up trash or work alone, but a group of people from a non-profit organization and my family helped plant native species in an area that struggled to thrive on it's own. It was a fun and rewarding experience.

It's a great idea what you're doing - it cleans up your local area, gets your out doors, exercising etc - definitely a win win situation!!
Yah, I do my absolute best to never litter and pick up what I can. I might not get all of it but each of us can make a small difference in our own cities and that’s good enough. If we all pitch in we might not clean the pacific garbage patch but we can all save a gecko or two in our own parks and that’s good enough for me.
