Shorter wings are more manoeuvrable, so they took the total length of wing they needed, divided it by three and stacked it on top of each other. There are actually 4 wings. The fourth is tiny and stuck down between the wheels, no less a wing though 😄

This was one of Germany's best planes in World War I.
