Thank you so much for this entertaining and educational video. You have solved a conundrum that i have had for years. When i came to Brum in 1974 for an interview at the University one of my strongest initial memories was driving past Holy Trinity Church. It made a real impression on me. However i also remembered another large church close by which is long gone and now replaced with the SDA church. I was beginning to think my memory was totally false - but seeing Camp Hill Presbyterian church in the video has confirmed that my recollection was true. Brilliant set of videos!
It was a really interesting video and well put together. It sad how many great historic buildings have and continue to be demolished in the name of progress.
I used to work at Dowding & mills (Sulzer) at the top of camp hill during the noughties. Hurts a little to see it's all been levelled. I worked with a lot of guys that had worked there man and boy and I bet it's even more gut wrenching. I even met my wife there.
Great pictures and filming. Excellent choice of music to create emotions of a bygone era. Made me think of all our loved ones who are no longer with us who would have been familiar with some of these changes.
can I ask where you got these amazing pictures? My Dad grew up in that house on Camp hill next to the garage in the 1950's, he would have been living there when these photos were taken, with his extended family of first generation Italian immigrants. I've been researching the area for a project and haven't been able to find anything as good as these. Sadly there are no family photos of the front the house. This has blown me away.
Hello Rachael, most of the pictures come from the Archives at the Bham Library. I also took some from Bham “nostalgia” books. If you want me to email these pictures to you, let me know. My email is citiesthroughmyeyes@gmail.com
This is a brilliant video but how you managed to do it without mentioning Dowding and Mills which was there for over a hundred years is a mystery. It was no small part of the video as it is the site with all the huge fencing around it and also incorporated Trinity school. I worked there as an an apprentice from 1987 until 2010 when it changed to Sulzer (where i still work) I watched the old school get demolished, the old flyover and watched with sadness as Dowding and Mills was dismantled - on my trips down the Blues. I know progress is good but still...........
Well done for bothering to make this piece of work. Obviously, with the music, it's quite poignant viewing but I think that's not a bad thing. Love these areas of Brum but sadly, bit by bit, they disappear...as do we, unfortunately.
Hello Reg Stokes, thanks for watching the video. Yes it was a lot of work. The area has changed so much that it was difficult at times to find the exact spot. But it is done! 🙂
No matter how many times I check the video, errors always slip up... At 32:40 Bradford St actually ran from Moat Row to Camp Hill. And I knew it, I don't know why I put Alcester St for... Anyways 😌 Sorry about that.
An interesting fact about the flyover. They tested putting sections together in Bordesley Green. I remember as a child going to see it and walking along a section. I also remember seeing it put together at Camp Hill and driving across it.
I only have 2. You can email me and I’ll send them to you. If you are in Bham, you can go to the library, 4th floor in the Archives room. If you ask the staff for the Bham photos CD, more are on there. I didn’t bother because it would have been too much. But if you are not in Bham, next time I go there, I’ll get the photos and send them to you.
UNBELEIVABLE... BEAM ME BACK SCOTTY , HOW MUCH I MIS THOSE OLD TIMES!!!, I WAS BORN INTHE 60'S, LIFE WASNT PERFECT, BUT WE GOT ALONG WITH ONE ANOTHER SOMEHOW, SHAME WHAT WE HAVE NOW😢😢😢
So nice to see lived in Sandy Lane the bottom of Trinity Hill would have liked to have seen that area went to Holy Trinity school in the 50s christened in Holy Trinity church so sad to see it now lovely building going to waste. I have a lot of good memories growing up in the area .remember the flyover being built and opened.
@@citiesthroughmyeyes That would be nice to see and remember the area Sandy Lane Samson Road Watery lane Lorden Road Mile street Mile street think most have them have gone now.
Redevelopment? Talk about throwing out the baby with the bath water! What your excellent and very evocative series has painfully shown, is just how unimaginative and shortsighted both the Council and the City developers have been, and still are, especially when you see some of the very poorly designed architecture they have built to replace some irreplaceable buildings that were part of Brums heritage, or have simply demolished to increase traffic flow! I’m all for progress and improvement, but unfortunately a lot of what’s been done can only be described as sheer deliberate vandalism!
Morning, do not know, as I said I was only there for a few months. There was little to no trade so I would imagine that it would not have been that long after I left (June 74). Great video, one of my childhood years around Larches Street, Sparkbrook would make interesting viewing, just to see how much that area has changed. Keep up the excellent work and take care.
Man Birmingham is a dumb now... It's lost all character and charm I hate going up town now because it's all to modern and boring there's no character in the buildings there's nothing that makes you go wow history it's all just flashy and boring I don't like it, Back in the old times Birmingham looked like a fun yet dirty city I wish we kept the old houses and buildings and built the city around them so we have that mix of old and new!
Hello The Master, thanks for watching the video. I wish the BCC had the old buildings as well. They had so much character & historical value. It's a shame really.
Next time you are "in town" have a proper look around...there are still many old buildings left. If you just go down the road from this vids location you have the custard factory 🏭...it's not all doom and gloom you know.

Thanks so much for these old photos telling us what we have lost. And for filming on Christmas Day.
You are very welcome Sue 🙂 Thanks for watching!
It was a really interesting video and well put together. It sad how many great historic buildings have and continue to be demolished in the name of progress.
Thank you for watching 🙂 It is sad indeed. Only 2 original buildings left in High St Bordesley and 1 in Camp Hill. The Big Reshuffle!

Thank you for watching the video 🙂 'Bygone era': that's the exact emotion I wanted to convey.

Thank you very much for watching the video, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully, I'll be able to cover all Bham.
You should send this to Birmingham City Planning Office & see if they’re proud of the nothingness they have created.
Nothingness sums up modern planning for inner cities!
Great video ! I see lots of work putting it together ! Brought back lots of good memories from an X Brummie
Hello Reg Stokes, thanks for watching the video. Yes it was a lot of work. The area has changed so much that it was difficult at times to find the exact spot. But it is done! 🙂
Once a "Brummie" always a Brummie!!
Hurts my soul to see these beautiful buildings & homes gone to be replaced by what they call “progress”….
Alas, nothing lasts.

"Errors" are what keep us humble. No one is beyond them.
Seems more like historical vandalism by the council than a improvement to a better future for the city and its people!
Hello Bob Bugwithoneeyesking is King!!! I agree. I was shocked to see the site of Dowell's Retreat in Warner St. WTH?!
Yes, nothing looks better, just a million times worse.
An interesting fact about the flyover. They tested putting sections together in Bordesley Green. I remember as a child going to see it and walking along a section. I also remember seeing it put together at Camp Hill and driving across it.
I did add some of these pictures (flyover being assembled) but I removed them at the last minute because it seemed too much for the flow of the video.
@@citiesthroughmyeyes Do you know where I can see these photos?

Managed the Bulls Head for a few months in 1974.
When did the pub closed down? I didnt find that much info on this pub.

Good afternoon Phil, thanks for your comment. I will definitely do Sparkbrook in the future. I appreciate your words of encouragement 🙂
At 34:52, I meant 26 December 2022
Players No10...so small a pack of 10 could get lost in a big coat....think also sold in 5s..easily hid in school blaiser!!!! Great vid!
Thanks to the planners this area is now a soulless metropolis where you would not wish to be walking alone in, night nor day.
the coelbunkers were better built than this modern rubbish . Mac mods BCFC 1875 .
