@@davelowets Precedent in law makes it cheaper, or else they had to pay even more to clean up their fuck ups everywhere not just where they lost. Just look Shell corporation and Nigeria.. they own the fucking government, police and military of Nigeria. Billions upon billions in bribes, lobbying etc has been used by them, but its still cheaper than getting rightfully sentenced in just one oil disaster. Essentially whole Nigeria is in similar condition to that of Ecuador, with difference that government is also oppressing its people with police and military to silence any demonstrations.
@@davelowets I guess I'm not sure of any actual numbers, but technically the ''cheapest way out'' is to do everything in your power to divert attention away from destructive or unsustainable business practices. Let's say they're forced to pay 18 billion to repair damages: now it's ''proven'' they have done something wrong, and there is more attention on them. The real cost here wouldn't be the 18b, but instead any profits lost because of possible missed opportunities due to likely increased supervision. If they can continue to fly under the radar, that means they can continue to do whatever they want.
So the oil company lobbied to take the case to Ecuador and when they ruled they were guilty they got a US court to rule the Ecuadorian ruling moot based on a guy who claimed he was bribed by the natives who was in fact bribed by the oil company. It's all about the money and as it's far from home and they already know they're going to pull out and hightail it back to the US, they just do what they want.
Why didn't Ecuador just shut them down then? Not like Texaco had military on site.. they were operating with the grace of Ecuador.. then they try to get Texaco to pay for what Ecuador had told them was fine to do. That's some shady shit.
This was infuriating to listen to. Makes me want to pull an Erin Brokovich and serve those lawyers and executives a glass of contaminated water. In the end, it boils down to "we don't care about those indigenous people and that forest or whatever. Yeah, we fucked up and did shady things, but you should clean it up because we won't get anything out of doing it." This is just pure, straight up corporate xenophobia.
I'm sure the feds will be knocking on my door for this but I ain't against that idea. Some day society will have to remind the 1% that think they're untouchable that they're not. That the pain they put on other for profit can reach them too.
But they DO have rules in Ecuador. They were purposely ignored and their records were hidden because these monsters weren't expecting a bunch of natives in the middle of the forest to do anything. In the end, Chevron proved to be strong enough to push back against a government. Disgusting, utterly disgusting.
The worst part is, that this went on for years and in the end they didn't have to pay a penny. Just shows you how bad corruption is. Don't any of these people know justice?
This one brings tears to my eyes. The lack of any responsibility, the injustness of it all. Another example of the lack of humanity money and big business bring to the world. Makes me sick.
How soulless. It’s incredible how little companies like Chevron value ethics in favor of profit margins. I hope that someday those responsible will be held accountable, for the sake of the indigenous people and for the environment.
> "Fierce legal battle that ended differently than you expect" No, it ended exactly as I expected. If those responsible dor the disaster were punished accordingly in the end and were forced to get their mess cleaned up, THEN that would have been the end I did not expect.
I never knew this. I remember during the BP spill, the coast guard would not let you get near the coast and destroyed any footage you took, even a before/after pic of a seabird being cleaned. Told me THEY were working for BP. The only footage I saw was on UA-cam of a native American man who owned his own helicopter.

It really highlights the problems with globalization of greedy corporations and the devastating pollution trail they leave behind.
When you grow uncustomed to nature, people dont even know how things work. How many people really know what i takes to make a peace of bread for instance? Flour is dirt cheap in essence, but its that only cause government forcing them to sell the grain in minimum price. If anyone of these city folk would need to grow, harvest and multitude of other things that goes into growing grain, they would have entirely new respect towards that peace of bread. Instead now people just toss half eaten sandwitch into trash. Same with oil and any other thing, since they dont realize how much impact it has to nature. I'm not saying we need to stop oil drilling, just make corporations clean up their mess and do it responsibly. How ever to get that done would mean getting rid of the corruption and mainly bribery known as lobbying.
Anyone who worked on this project, anyone walking through that forrest working and building things like this, knowing what it would do to the people living simple lives.... They must know how utterly cursed and tainted their soul is from the beginning till the end of time.

The phone you are holding came from a big company. It is also a petroleum based product. As is a vast majority of the this you use every day. Not only that, but if it weren't for big companies you would basically be living in 1800. Think, damn it.
People don't need massive government bailouts and subsidies to operate and create stuff. You can't sit here and deny that most of these mega corporations should not be as big and powerful as they are and have not created anything to get them to that level. Pfizer and Moderna have done more damage to medicine than actual progress. Especially now with them messing with gain of function type stuff in creating new superviruses. Even their overuse of antibiotics have created unimaginable resistant strings. Normal companies and creators make things to a certain extent to help or advance on top of what we have... These mega corporations go far far beyond that and are doing experiments and social manipulation on the population and most people are too stupid to realize it. Not to mention all the political money and connections. Stop simping for corporations.
The governments of these nations allow these companies to come in and destroy their environment and the health of the citizens because they get paid. They enrich themselves and don't pass any of that money along to the nation by way of government services or progress (like building schools or decent roads or hospitals) and basically let the companies do what they will. They're aware of what is going on as it's happening but they just don't care. The same thing is happening in Nigeria. That country is incredibly poor but extremely rich in resources. None of that money goes back into the country or provides jobs or anything and those who used to farm and fish for a living can't do that anymore because there's just oil everywhere. Al9ng the river there, every piece of ground, every bush and tree trunk is covered in oil at least 5 feet up.

Video suggestion. I've caught a few of you videos recently and I feel something that is a local tragedy to my area would fit well with your narrative abilities. The Station nightclub fire. Feb 20 2003, West Warwick, RI. There were a lot of factors considered during the investigation, and in my personal opinion a lot of cover up attempts were likely made. "Grandfathered" safety standards were also a major factor, so I feel the same as many of your narrations mentioned that safety must continue to improve and never be allowed stagnation.
As a firefighter, I implore you to do more research on the station night club fire. While the business was grandfathered on many accounts, it truly was the fault of the owners who did illegal and shady things, such as locking emergency doors, passing the max capacity of the club, and allowing pyrotechnics inside a venue that had flammable material.
@@annaallard13 I did a fair bit. The rear exit was not locked, it was security stopping anyone who wasn't an employee or part of the entertainment from going out the back door. They were permitted to use the blerp pyros, and the sound deadening foam on the stage was self extinguishing at one point in it's life, but had become saturated with grease and dust over the years. And yes, they were over capacity by a large margin. Inswing doors and old fire sprinklers were some of the grandfathered safety issues.

This is infuriating and I had no idea this happened. I always said that I wanted to go into the oil field to try to change it for good. Even got a degree in geology. But now I truly think the best thing to do is invest in green energy. Oil will never go away, especially as long as OPEC is here. But what we can do is limit how big oil is. We have a market, we have the opportunity to do it. This might be the best way to get rid of the monopolization of energy. Having numerous large markets of energy instead of solely oil
Lol. You either have disasters like the one shown in this video, or children held at gunpoint in africa being forced to mine metals used in batteries. It doesn't matter what avenue you go down, as long as minerals and resources are being mined from 3rd world countries, the local people and environment will always be exploited.
I’d love to know how any court can rule in favour of the oil company. It’s clear to see to everyone who bothers to look what they have caused yet they get away with poisoning a nation.
We must remember that companies, corporations and governments are mainly responsible for the issues that affect us and the world. The blame is passed down to the one with the least ability in a controlling manner. This nightmare can still be cleaned up but of course that costs money and oil companies only care for profit. May they sit back on billions while the natives in the area suffer for generations. We need certain things to survive, obviously, but if those sources are offered in a way for profit in mind then the consequences are things like this: companies will do everything they can to cut cost and increase profit even if that means destroying environments
Yo, oil companies made record breaking profits last year, because you know, Putin, so now everybody going expensive for no reason and our governments told us to stay cold in winter, so they should have couple 100 billions in their pockets
Exactly! If this company were actually held accountable, they'd find a way to blame one of their employees for what happened and act as if the employee acted on their own and they were unaware of their actions. It's what corrupt companies always do. Those same companies also operate in a thoroughly corrupt manner all the way up the chain of command, cutting costs in every way they can no matter of the consequences to their employees, their product, the people they do business with, nor whatever harm they cause all so that they can squeeze every extra cent of profits to hoard for themselves.
We have all resources we need right here in the US, yet our government makes it attractive for companies to seek resources in places where there is little oversight or human rights. It's shameful.
"Hellish conspirations" are not a paranoid lie; involve government and law-justice-sistems to the service and - total impunity - of the wealthy, the powerful, and the satanic elites (illuminati, NWO members, masons grade 30-33, and militar-industrial complex members, principally).
Isn't it wonderful how little we care about anything if we can become "better" ourselves. Humanity truly goes over corpses. Instead of thinking about the future and their fellow human beings, they only think about themselves, their own profit and their own gains.
Once again human life means zero to the rich. lf you have money to fight... you win. lf you're poor and victimized, then you lose. These people lose more than a court case... they lose everything including their lives. This is beyond dispicable. l have never heard of this. The world should be appalled and moved to demand this filthy company make the Amazon clean again. Such an endangered environment should be protected at all costs. RIP to the people and that beautiful place. 😭😭😭
I feel like there's a lot of other stories of spills and waste disposal gone wrong, especially regarding hydrocarbons, that you could've compared this to. This really has no similarities to Chernobyl at all except that a large area was contaminated in some way. Completely different methods of contamination, and completely different contaminant substances.
This is exactly why US Law is so complicated. They knew full well how that was gonna play out coming full circle in NY. Unreal. How can anyone with a conscience do this to other places? I'm shocked there's never been an incident of someone polluting the water and ground near any remote cabins owned by oil CEOs that do this. I honestly am shocked.
Actually, that ended exactly as I expected. Although I was surprised that Chevron were given a light slap on the wrist, even if it was never applied. That's... something, I guess.
Odd how we don't force companies to follow the same protocols as the country they are based in. Regardless of where their buildings are built. Also if they refuse to apologize or take any accountability, double the fine. ×1.5 again for every day its not paid.
We have lived in Cuenca, Ecuador for 8+ years. The pollution problem is still very much front and center in Ecuadorian culture and news. The indigenous tribes are rightfully pissed off. Sadly, the culture of corruption in Ecuador’s oil industry is alive and well. Today, the looming environmental disaster is from illegal mining.
The most sickening part is the American and British legislature were just like “eh yeah nah it’s cool actually you owe CHEVRON money. We recognise that this was a sham, we just don’t care.”
"Son, in my effort to provide you with a good life I'm going to help this company fight taking responsibility for poisoning of 100s of thousands of acres and ruining 10s of thousands of lives" How do these people parent?
"For 18 years effected communities fought the oil giant in a fierce legal battle that ended differently then you'd expect" If anyone expected the oil giant to pay any form of repercussions then you are very, very ignorant.
Seriously, the only thing even partially surprising is that the Ecuadorian government was made to pay the oil giant in the end for bullshit reasons and that's only kind of surprising considering it boils down to the oil giant not getting its way and running home to throw a fit
To add insult to injury, the corporatist supreme court just upheld the decision against the lawyer who represented the people of Ecuador. History will be kind Mr Donzinger
Daily reminder most companies will only do the right thing if they have to/if they're being watched. Sometimes not even then. This is true for most companies, its just more catastrophic if its something like oil & gas.
Lets just not perhaps. You dont wanna dive into a dark side of the internet i mean human nature. You would go psycho what everything people had done. Everything. What ever you think of, there somewhere on Earth theres one, two, five, hundreds of people who did it and will do. Every minute as we speak.
This is also happening in Nigeria. But don't be fooled- these governments know exactly what these companies are doing. They just let them because those who broker the deals and allow it get paid. It might be different if any of that money went back into the local economy or provided jobs or schools or built roads or hospitals or something for the citizens but none of it does. Nigeria has a huge population living in poverty and many used to farm and fish to make a living or just survive. But that's not an option now- the rivers and lakes have thick oil on top and nothing lives in it anymore. The ground is just coated in oil, as are bushes and trees- some areas literally look like everything has been painted black from the ground to a height of 5 or 6 feet. Those in government have plenty of money themselves- everything made from these oil companies (and others) stays between them. Nigeria is incredibly rich in natural resources and their government exploits that yet people still starve there every day because they see none of that money gained from destroying their environment and health.
Omg this is horrible it's a shame they are looking for more ways to make money instead of thinking about these poor people it's ridiculous humanity is so foolish just for $$$
“These companies” sounds like a lot of people. It’s sad to think that it’s really only a handful of individuals making the core decisions; It’s not even a full roundtable.
I doubt that a company in any other country would get away with this. It would be blasted all over the news to garner outrage, yet when an American company is guilty of atrocity there is hardly anyone reporting on it. This happened many years ago and yet I heard nothing whatsoever about this until I saw this video. It's 2024.
I don't think it should be associated with Chernobyl, since the latter was an accident and had a tremendous containment and cleanup operations performed, unlike the intentional cynical Texaco's environmental disregard and escaping responsibility. In some regard, that's even worse, because those in charge were fully aware of what they are doing and that they are not going to be accountable for it.
I actually find Chernobyl more distressing for that exact reason. One was a cruel but calculated decision, a crime against those on civilization's fringe, whose suffering would be the least notable. No such precautions of self-preservationist logic guided the fallout of reactor number 4
All those lives lost and damage done just to save around $3 a barrel. As an American, this is more than shameful. The hate things like this breed for us Americans is truly sad. I am glad I went with my dad on hunting/fishing trips because not only did I develope a love for nature, but I also was taught how to respect it. Thanks for another video.

The governments of these nations allow these companies to come in and destroy their environment and the health of the citizens because they get paid. They enrich themselves and don't pass any of that money along to the nation by way of government services or progress (like building schools or decent roads or hospitals) and basically let the companies do what they will.

This is...evil. There's no other way to describe it.
Thank you for bringing awareness to this
Aaaand why am I not surprised by this American company
I doubt that a company in any other country would get away with this. It would be blasted all over the news to garner outrage, yet when an American company is guilty of atrocity there is hardly anyone reporting on it. This happened many years ago and yet I heard nothing whatsoever about this until I saw this video. It's 2024.
That's disgusting that the company would just not acknowledge their wrong doings knowing that it's killing people
I don't think it should be associated with Chernobyl, since the latter was an accident and had a tremendous containment and cleanup operations performed, unlike the intentional cynical Texaco's environmental disregard and escaping responsibility.
@@balargus319 I'm not sure what do you mean by that
All those lives lost and damage done just to save around $3 a barrel. As an American, this is more than shameful. The hate things like this breed for us Americans is truly sad. Very sorry for the way some of our irresponsible people do things. To think, I am hated for being American because of what others do is unsettling.
OMG !!! How in the hell did they get away with this ???this is a crime against mankind !!!!! My god heads should roll !!!
Let the money talk, they will explain you everything.
So they lobbied to get the trial moved to Ecuador because they wanted a ruling that they believed would be in their favor, but then got a court that was going to rule against them so they slithered out of that court room too? Bruh that’s a double L lmao.
i cant even make it halfway thru this vid its too depressing. like actual murders are less depressing than this 😢😢😢😢
This is f’ing murder bro. This sucks so bad. There’s so little that can be done these companies grew to be so powerful. It sucks that the most developed countries are the most greedy.
People need to be put in jail instead of charging these stupid corps
nah they should be rounded up and made to live on that land they polluted.
I would argue it's worse than Chernobyl, because now we can go back there and it's been healed - the abandoned forests and fields around it are a sanctuary of thriving, undisturbed wildlife. This will never properly heal, and will continue to harm wildlife LONG after Chernobyl did.
Do one of your pieces on the Nigerian Delta area. It was the training ground for this spectacular clusterfuck.
Take the profits, make the government and people bear the losses.
@@capt.bart.roberts4975 Then order the country where economic disaster took place to pay hundreds of millions back to the corporation fueled by greed. Fucking clowns.
Love the way footage lines up sometimes. They lived how they have for centuries. In harmony woth environment. Clip shows person driving a gasoline outboard motor. Likely a two stroke.
