The most difficult step is the first step which is starting. Once you start, you begin to create momentum and you start "channeling" your creativity from your higher self. If you are experiencing a lot of fear before starting, then that is a good sign. That means that your negative ego knows it is about to lose and is making one BIG last ditch effort to stop you. Ignore the fear and just start. Stop thinking. Just do it.
this is darned incredible advice and insight. I've been messing around day today putting off starting a painting, it's 8 pm and I've found a million things to do except just starting... and I think you absolutely nailed what is going on here. Thanks for taking the time to write that!
@@jplum7708 Yes, the learning experience is paramount! A professor gave an art assignment to his students. He broke the class up into two groups. He gave the first group a painting assignment to paint one painting and their grade would be based on the quality of the work. For the second group, he said quality wasn't important but quantity was. The more paintings a student did, the better his grade. After the assignment, the group that was graded on quantity produced higher quality paintings than the first group. The lesson to be learned: Have no expectation of the outcome. Just do it because it is fun.
I put on a podcast, usually relating to art. I sit in my chair, facing my easel, usually by the time I've finished mixing my oils, I'm ready to begin. I keep a notebook of ideas and inspirational photographs on hand for the in between times when I'm no currently working on a piece.
Beautiful portrait!! Once I get started painting, I get so deep in the zone I forget to take breaks!! I used to have a harder time staying focused, especially if I wasn't just "feeling it". Music helps a lot....nothing you are proned to singing to, LOL!!! But now a days, I tend to like silence. A room with beautiful natural light, comfy, inspiring, and a cup of tea is what keeps me going.
Lovely work! I personally don’t mind being distracted while I work. I think I just naturally focus easily when I’m enjoying what I’m doing, so feeling distracted often indicates to me that it could be a good time to take a break or to attend to my other needs (like eating, which sometimes doesn’t happen if I’m very focused). Much more important to me than achieving some state of mind, like “flow” is to simply be present with what is arising for me in each moment. Sometimes my brain simply cannot focus, or I am experiencing emotions that prevent me from enjoying what I am doing, and I have found it to be healthy in the long-term to accept the feelings and needs of my body and mind.
@@lucyhanks500 Some people’s minds just naturally focus easily when they’re doing what they enjoy, but I understand how you could interpret that as a pretentious statement. Perhaps I could expand upon my initial comment by saying that my ability to focus on different stimuli depends on my level of interest in the subject at hand, as well as how I am feeling. Focusing is a biggggg CHALLENGE when I find something boring 😂. I do wish that we, as a society, were taught to share (and celebrate) our strengths, as well as our weaknesses, without interpreting the person who is sharing as pompous. I think that stating one’s strengths could be viewed as simply stating facts. For me, it becomes problematic when someone overestimates his or her abilities or exaggerates in order to impress people. Do you agree?
@@lyssasletters3232 by pomposity, I’m referring to the sense of ego some people display, when they appear not to be introspective. I don’t find it problematic when people overestimate their abilities, as that is an internal dialogue, which doesn’t require the demeaning or undermining of innocent peoples sense of self worth and healthy confidence, for the growth of one’s own ego. It may be slightly Freudian what the mind does to others to make itself look comparatively superior, where unnecessary condescension is only one small tell in a cluster of traits. In that regard, pomposity in its traditional meaning can cause a plethora of insidious divisive damage within a society, can it not? @@lyssasletters3232 I was actually referring to the tones of voice in some of the videos; which some of your comments also read like. Fear of failure is a big killer of flow. I like your idea to pick achievable projects. I too have noticed i work better with people around but only if they are in flow too. I seem to get into flow by osmosis then. I also think that’s why painting plein air is so popular. Nature tends to quieten a distracted mind and its easier to be present.
For me...I don't distract myself with anything....in fact...I keep my 'quick note' app open on my phone beside easel. Although phone is under silent mode with no notification. Whenever I get idea or remember some thing to do...I write in this quick note....I don't play music....but I Ido take breaks involuntarily maybe every 20 minutes for maybe 5 minutes or just go and see outside... immediately after painting I write down...what was good that session and what went wrong...I don't understand artists talking while painting and listening to music...for me it's meditation 🙏

distractions are def a problem when it comes to creating, which is why i dont look at my phone and cant listen to music when im working, i just start singing along lol and def I tend to only get into a flow and zone out when im etching, probably because its actually therapeutic but mainly because of the sharp tools you have to focus on 😝
I usually paint from photo reference and draw from a grid. Getting into flow isn’t a problem for me as long as I love what I’m working on. I do miss painting from life and find the grid method affects my final outcome. Not sure how to break this habit.
Music is nice but it can be so stimulating for me, I find that white noise or repetitive asmr kind of helps me get into that meditative state that is flow.

So, I realize that what get me in the zone is working next to other artist...not be alone...

Pomposity is a stubborn problem, and children don’t get to watch characters like Flowella Benjamin and Rusty Lee in their development anymore.
