I just met Nelly at Revolution in Solana Beach less than an hour ago. Such a nice guy. I know everyone says that about every celebrity, but he was genuinely friendly and had a deep serenity in his eyes. I was starstruck & forgot to mention I used to have the poster of him up on my barracks wall when I was a teenaged PFC in the Army. Heard a rumor back then that he had 36-inch thighs, (I had a 32-inch waist back then). That might have been exaggerated, but he is a substantial human being.
I saw Vails compete at the 1986 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Colorado Springs. Watching him on these grainy videos doesn't do the man justice. The power and speed he had in his legs were astounding, and he was pretty sharp with tactics as well.
I saw him in Cali Colombia... I was a track cyclist during that time (1985)... He tried to beat the all time record at the local velodrome (Alcides Nieto Patiño) but couldn't do it because to much air blowing... The whole stadium wait until 9 or 10pm... but too sad he couldn't beat the record that day...
Different sport requires proper training development. 1984 (Road) cyclist are the same build as 2020 (Road) Cyclist. 1984 (Track) Cyclist are the same build as 2020 (Track) Cyclist. A road cyclist needs to have all around strength and cardio conditioning. A Track cyclist only needs to concentrate on brut force and cardio. Thats why you don't see Sprinters winning in the Alps of the tours.
I was there that day, and can see myself at 1:55! Thanks for posting!

You're confusing road racing with Track
Cheetah all right, he left the sprinters lane😂
