    I love buying in bulk because it simplifies my life, but it definitely helps to know which items you go through more quickly.

      Yes. I could see it working ok for certain things that get used all the time. ❤️

    Having a ‘home’ for each item made the biggest difference on our change (in house & garage) easy to find items when needed instead of purchasing duplicates because of the “I can’t find it !” Syndrome. Realizing less truly IS more . More peace of mind #1👍 Thank you for the tips :)

      Yes that is so true- not being able to find things can definitely lead to duplicates!

    I live in The Netherlands and for Dutch standards your house is pretty large. The amount of light and the windows is common here. We have that too and I like that very much. The garden you have is so wonderful. Few People in The Netherlands have such an amount of area around the house. And its something I envy you in a good way😊.
    I do laundry when it’s needed. I do this in the European way to hang the wet clothes on lines. It’s way cheaper because of the energy costs and the laundry will stay longer in good quality.
    I appreciate your channel very much. You are the one I prefer to listen and watch. You tell it in a way that is comforting and also encouraging. Thank you very much❤

    As someone who has been watching a lot of hoarders recently I find the abundance Vs scarcity mindset idea very interesting

    • @ArrowHillCottage
      @ArrowHillCottage  2 роки тому +1

      There definitely is a huge mindset component to how we approach our belongings! Many people who have hoarding disorders come from a very traumatic background where perhaps they had to deal with scarcity on a daily basis. That mental component can be a lot to overcome!

    Hey, Angela. About buying in bulk, I think it's much cheaper to buy in bulk only the basic things that we need, because, for instance, toilet paper, not only it has gotten way more expensive in a pack of four, but also there's not that much paper on that... bigger and bigger toilet roll hole. 😒

    • @ArrowHillCottage
      @ArrowHillCottage  Рік тому +1

      Ha! You’re probably right for the cost per unit. And I think if it is something that is used up quickly (like toilet paper) it makes sense to save that money by buying more at one time. ❤️

    I’m still working on my “kitchen puzzle” lol. Or should I say working on my relationship with food and eating. Lol. I find also that just carrying the weight of all the “stockpile” food/consumable stuff that is there can be an issue also. I think what stresses me out about it is that it will make me worry or feel guilt about not getting to all of it in time. So in a sense I am just making more “chores” for myself. Or just wind up using so much brain power on trying to come up with “interesting” ways to eat all that food. For me personally, I think I just have to admit that I don’t have the bandwidth for all that right now.
    I think for now just trying to work on eating up or giving away what is likely the “way too much groceries for just one person” and avoid bringing home too many of those oh so tempting super clearance bargains. I think my whole house is in pretty good order now (efficient, simple)….
    except for the food. It’s about the only area that still feels stressful to me. Running through all that food might take awhile, but after that I just plan on keeping and storing a lot less. Prob just experiment with that a bit and with eating out or getting takeout a certain amount instead of buying all the groceries that my fantasy Betty Crocker self prob won’t cook up for a very long time anyways. 😂😂 (dining for just one…and some cats lol). Then I’m just gonna track the spending on that and make sure it still makes sense. Well maybe something like that. I already know that I can still get “deals” tho with various restaurant promotions and not all of it has to be so fancy or expensive. 😅😅
    The food scarcity concept prob resonates the most with me. I still think for me tho it’s more about “low price” scarcity and I prob bring way too much home Bcuz it’s a steal of a deal that I think I won’t get later at that most excellent price point. Lol. And also the fantasy self perhaps who thinks she is suddenly going to be a master chef. 😅😅

      I wonder if a home kit system like Green Chef or Hello Fresh would be of benefit to you? They include everything you need for the meals, without the excess. I’ve heard a lot of single people enjoy being able to be creative with their eating, without having a bunch of leftovers. Something to think about for the future…❤️

      @@ArrowHillCottage Lol. I did try HF for awhile. Didn’t really love it. Idk if I’m picky or just don’t like a lot of typical things. With that if you don’t keep up with it constantly, they’ll send you whatever is on cue. And then you still have to prep it. One time it was meat loaf-when I forgot one week lol. (It’s one of those things I really don’t like that most people like just fine lol). I don’t think I’m “fussy” like at any restaurant, it’s just that I don’t like a lot of things those folks come up with…so far and it’s just not that cheap imo. It’s cool now tho Bcuz they have some of those things at the grocery store I can pick up. We have Publix down here and they do some of their own “take and bake” for one or two type of stuff. And their food is so much better. Ha ha. Also their deli is awesome and great subs. And the Kroger over here sells some home chef. Not super cheap either but at least I can see if I like their food before I commit. And I usually only pick some of that up if it’s marked down but imo not super impressive really. Esp the pizza sauce. 😅😅 I just think if it costs that much I shouldn’t have to cook it Bcuz I can just go get Marie Callander’s or Stouffers on sale and I like the taste better anyways and it’s cheaper. It does sometimes get old tho. “TV dinner” selections. 😅😅 I just think their stuff is more like any other new fad ad stuff tho. Overpriced and mediocre.
      My last thing was just hit Olive Garden (make “meal number one” mostly endless salad-one of my fave things. Love that salad) , eat the entree mostly at home next meal and take advantage of their $6 cold take home, which was a huge bowl of decent spaghetti, which I got 2 meals out of. So yah. I mean it’s close to the same price as all the home chef etc when I divide it by 4 and add like $1 for cheap store soda with. Lol. I think sometimes I might secretly be a male college student. And some days it’s like ugh. Idc. Ramen. 😂😂 I used to go eat at Sam’s sometimes also but now I think they check if you have a card. (I don’t). Used to could go without being a member to just eat very cheap. Bummer Bcuz it would be a good once a week option. Lol. Huge pizza slice and endless drink for like $3. Huge frozen yogurt $1. Or a beef dog combo for like $2. I also think I’m just cheapo at times as well. Lol. I guess I’ll be ok either way tho Bcuz I seem to have a nose for deals no matter what. 🤣🤣 Might be worth getting a Sam’s card just for that. If I have to. Lol. I was an accountant in my “former life” so working the numbers is pretty easy for me. lol.
      Way back I lived in Chicago for awhile and I think maybe I got spoiled. Lol. The food was sooo good there. Esp Greek places and pizza. And then well idk. My mom worked and we often just ate either easy fast prep meals or we got fast food or takeout (prob more often than average) and so maybe I just didn’t have the best “raising.” But we did often go once a week each Sunday to my Nanny’s and eat and she was big on most everything home cooked and a very good cook. Just kind of trying to see all the possibilities with things like past lifestyle (latch key 80s kid lol) and how that translates to the way I eat today. But idk if I can only blame myself for my lack of interest in “home ec” but that was prob also Bcuz of the abuse where I was never wanting to find myself trapped in some abusive marriage (just the stuff I saw I guess turned me off a lot with all things domestic and I prob foolishly also threw the baby out with the dirty bathwater). I guess these days trying to change my skewed perspective on all of that. To some degree anyways. Lol. Bcuz idk. Young presumptuous me didn’t think much about needing to learn to feed myself etc. Or didn’t want to at least in the context of being a slave to some pot bellied cretin running me ragged and demanding I bring him a beer. 🤣🤣 Sorry to be so crude and negative (Bcuz I now know good marriages aren’t like that) but back then this is what I saw (at least the attitude-bio father alcoholic and step father just selfish and like my moms new “baby”) and it was the last thing I wanted to wind up like. I really do think there is way more to food and our eating habits (psychologically) than many of us would like to think tho.
      I still feel pretty lucky tho Bcuz some in my support groups would have eating disorders and body image issues and comfort eating issues. Other health problems related to very poor diets. Etc. I just kinda wound up with a bit of mild self neglect issues (not what I’d call “severe”) and difficulty with decision making around food, some mild sensory stuff etc. I swore this wasn’t gonna get long. I recently revisited one of my older channels (narc abuse recovery topics) and one vid was all about food issues and our relationship with food after that kind of abuse (depends on what the abuser was obsessed with and so on but many times the eating disorders just come from a place of trying to have some kind of control over your own life or stuff. For some that was all they COULD control seems like). I still have hope tho that I’ll figure it out. Like I said before. I’ve just been delayed a bit. I’ll get there. But at the same time, I still have to be totally honest with myself about any mental food issues I have. I feel like I do pretty dang well tho…considering. Im no longer so awfully hard or down on myself, but at the same time there are still a few kinks that need to be worked out. 😅😅
      At my core, I still believe SAHM set up and all the stability that comes with that is ideal for kids. I just don’t know if I personally could ever be that tho after all the other I’ve seen (and my grandparents house was always a safe haven like that as well. As a kid me and my cousins were over there all the time and it was awesome. Out in the country a bit and often playing outside with each other etc). I think having them in my life so much was a huge mitigating factor with me not winding up with such severe issues so I’m def grateful for that. They prob did over caretake me in some ways (my mom and grandma) and so what I was used to all the time was they decide what’s for dinner or they decide what food joint and then I just eat whatever was available with very little thought about all that would go into that just to have meals. But ya know. It was all I ever knew growing up. And with the step father of course, it was very often catered to his food preferences. And you just knew better than to ever complain or fuss about it or push for what you preferred to eat. And at times also just forced to eat a small amount of every food prepared at home whether we liked it or not. At least we were allowed smothering sauces of our liking to get it down. 😅😅 It got better as a teen at least Bcuz I could work part time and go buy myself what I preferred to eat, but still I didn’t have a lot of money and very little kitchen skills. And most of that wasn’t very healthy either. But on the plus side my grandma would try to make at least one thing I liked (and my cousins and the adults lol-usually a huge spread) and my mom would sneak in a few things she knew I liked as well sometimes.
      But I pretty much think I’m a die hard city slicker at heart (For me working frequently at restaurants as a server, college in downtown Atlanta, living in Chicago and my kid living for awhile near NYC etc, (and I loved all the restaurant and delicious food options and convenience and the “buzz” of city life etc) so I’m not so sure I could ever do the homestead thing. But I still admire folks who can. Lol. My extremely uninformed younger self tho…I thought whatever. I’ll get a career and make enough money to maybe have a maid or a cook. But that’s not realistic at all tho and I learned all that the hard way for awhile. 😅😅 I might could’ve pulled something like that off tho if I hadn’t been so emotionally crippled. And yet all my failures and crashing and burning was prob a good thing in the long run Bcuz it at least got me off of that endless “over achieve to earn love or be good enough” train. Maybe I’ve just tasted some of the best food known to mankind and I just can’t go back now. (Prob a little spoiled). 😂😂 If I ever got to go to Paris it would prob be game over for me. Mmmm mmm good tho. All that rich, buttery French food. Lol. Some folks are just really talented in the kitchen and I don’t at all mind being one of their Guinea pigs. lol. I’m not as “diva” as Zsa Zsa Gabore, but I do prefer city life. (I’m more “downtown” tho than “uptown” lol. Like food truck or pizza parlor or corner deli over fancy restaurant for me most days lol). But idk half the time tho if I’m really picky or if they’re actually just turning out crap products. I would eat it anyways (endure it for a minute lol) but I wouldn’t sign up for more either.
      There also is just the things like me feeding animals day in and day out (it’s practically a “farm” in that sense even tho I’m in the city-we have some raccoon issues also along with having to rein in a rather large colony of stray cats (we did a TNR project on this street and we cooperatively feed the stray cats), plus my own cats, (then I also have this “house manager” type of “job” now), so I just don’t like adding “cooking for myself” to those duties if I don’t have to so much. I know it’s not near as taxing as feeding and raising kids but it does still take a toll if you wind up with higher numbers of animals around to have to tend to. And cats can be rather “pestery” at times about food. Lol. But I love animals (cats esp) and I guess I’ll be some kind of fur baby “sucker” mom for as long as I’m able to be. Lol.

      @@goodenoughgirl8102 I've personally never tried any of the meal kits myself... I'm not sure if I would like it or not. I'm not a super adventurous eater myself. I find the things that I like, and my family likes... and I just make them on rotation over and over. Takes out the guesswork. ha ha! I'm sorry but I had to LOL at your comment about "being a slave to some pot bellied cretin running me ragged and demanding I bring him a beer" - just gave me a funny visual in my head. But I understand that your perspective was skewed by your own upbringing. And when I think about it that way, it really isn't funny at all. You've done so well for yourself! ❤

      @@ArrowHillCottage Aw. Thanks! Nah. I crack jokes about the abuse all the time. It’s very cathartic. Dark humor is a very good way to cope at times. Or just process things. At least for me it is. Lol. I actually kind of adopted that from the “Look who’s talking” movie when Kirstie envisioned her potential future with Travolta. It kind of stuck in my head forever and was hilarious. 😂😂 Of course that was also just her fear talking tho. Lol.
      Yeah. I guess ya know it’s like anything else. If you have a trick leg you have to adapt your lifestyle around it. Stuff can still be done, it just might not be the usual way it’s done by most. But idk. Murica. We got a lot of folks eating a lot of fast food tho and so on. 😅😅 I guess I just don’t think those home things are any better than grocery shopping. And its a little pricy if you consider cost per ounce or such. And not all that much more quick or convenient. Plus I would have to use even more brain power to do those recipes. And as a single, I can still at least get an average amount of salad stuff and put it away before it gets ruined. Also just trying to see how I do with that. Often I will just be like “add home salad” to that. Which isn’t as hard as a whole meal plan for me. And I’m pleasantly surprised also that most produce will last longer than I thought it would. Well onions for me also Bcuz I love them and eat them on many things and they keep pretty well for awhile. And then pre cut and freeze the pizza/pasta/Mexican food veggies. Lol.

    Being efficient with your tasks inside the home makes sense. However; don’t you find that when trying to do too many things (outside of your home) that it becomes stressful ? Example: Taking your kids somewhere, picking up a prescription at the drug store, dentist appointment, fill up gas for the car, etc. all in a set period of time. Better off splitting the tasks in a couple days, right ?

    • @ArrowHillCottage

      Those things outside the home are usually a bit more difficult to put under your own control unfortunately. Yet, I do try my best to get as many errands done in one chunk of time as I can. Fewer trips running here and there leaves longer stretches of time to tackle other things, I’ve found.
