Depends on what you’re using it for, if you’re using it for tall weeds, vegetation and small limbs the thick blades start to work against you.

The Big Problem with American Made Knives like Tops & others is they are Too Expensive to Buy for Most People so I buy my knives from sellers who sell knives made in Nepal or buy directly from knife makers in Nepal. These knives are very high quality knives as good as Tops & other American Made Knives at Half the Cost. I like the High Quality American Made Knives but as I said they are just Too Expensive in Most Cases for the Average Person to Buy without Emptying their Bank Accounts!

It`s a No-Brainer not to want to pay for products that are overpriced when I can get something of the same quality or better for less.
@@stevesheartone2998 If you knew how many hours went into a good handmade knife, you would stop calling them greedy and price gouging. I also spend less on knives, but still have 2 high end ones. But DONT call actual knife makers greedy until you break down the costs. Hours, material, equipment maintenance, electrical, shop payments, insurance etc.
@@roydunn4649 It doesn`t take that long to make a high end knife if you know what you are doing. I know an American Knifemaker who lives in Texas that makes High Quality Handmade Knives in his Backyard so don`t give me this costs, hours, material, equipment maintenance, electrical, shop payments and insurance argument stuff. He is an experienced Blacksmith and sells his knives at a reasonable price.

Back in the early 1980’s, S.O.F. magazine had an article about the three blades you need for combat.
It said you should carry a large blade between ten and twelve inches, a medium blade between five and seven inches, and a folding knife with a serrated blade.
I’ve always found this to be a useful guide when setting up a go-bag. Of course when it’s a wilderness bag, I include a folding saw, hatchet or small axe, and a shovel.

LOL! What?! Good lord. You’re a “super” camper? You’d use the machete or khukuri to chop a piece of wood into a shovel then dig the hole with the wooden shovel. Of you start digging your blades into the ground, I doubt you’ll survive long.
@@totallyfrozenIf you have a quality machete with a proper steel you can absolutely use it to dig a hole. Obviously it’ll be less effective than using a shovel but you have to think about the extra weight you have to lug around carrying around a dang hatchet and shovel. Lmao, unless you’re just car camping or something
20:00 was the first kukri style blade I ever bought. I was cutting hardwood the day I got it and broke it within an hour, got a replacement and broke that one in under an hour to. Bought a kukri from Nepal and it has never failed. I'm rough on a knife, so I need one that can keep up.
Cheaper Stainless steel is usually more susceptible to breaks like that.

My family came from Indonesia so the parang was the set tool. Pops took it fishing. I slimmed down to kukri for camping . While in the Corps I used bolos and still will one in the bush here.

Same as with the knife my 'survival' machete is the one I bring just in case but really don't expect to use it much. When I travel overseas (inter continental) I often only bring a sheath and buy a local machete (they usually come without a sheath but I have made sheaths out of plastic bottles also). The 'just in case' machete has to be light weight, with a decent sheath and fit inside my day pack.

Real nice Eye candy in these miserable times. Going to make a nice breakfast and watch your video 'Again'. It's like those videos of a log burning or fish swimming for my cat. It's relaxing after watching 'breaking news this morning'. I got a Ontario sawback in the plastic sheath which goes into the Rothco canvas machete sheath. The Rothco has molle straps, large velcro opening beltloop and shoulder strap loops and it fits other big knives to attach to a backpack etc. And it was cheap
you need to change your outlook f these are miserable times.
Ontario SP53 is a good big chopper, the SP52 is the thinner flat ground version, lighter, good for green vegetation.

Fantastic knives
It's hard to beat the Ontario machetes. The camper models with the D guard injection molded grips are much more durable than the military version with riveted on handle scales. The 12" version is very handy but sometimes the 18" is more ideal when dealing with thorny briar. For a sheath the US military polymer type sheath you showed is fantastic and extremely durable. These sheaths are sized to fit the 18" models but can easily be cut down shorter to fit the 12" versions.
SP-53 just a real chopper.
@@mikeboone4425 The Ontario spec plus line is great stuff and I highly recommend it! The thinner blade of the machetes combined with their slightly lower rockwell hardness gives the machete some advantage when it comes to field sharpening as well as improved durability if you accidentally hit something hard like a rock ect. The one modification I make to the camper machetes besides giving them a wicked nice convex 3edge is I prefer to cut off most of the integral d guard. I leave about 3/4" of the guard at the front of the grip to give a bit more protection from sliding onto the blade if I'm digging with it or otherwise using it to poke around.
Yes OKC machetes are great! I prefer the 22 inch machete, but I also have a 18 inch... I carry a rat 1 daily and I absolutely love my sp5 Bowie!
I live in the South East and that 22 inch is better for killing copperheads and rattlers... We are overrun with them...

For a machete I use a US GI I have beat the thing up and it has held up no issues have owned it from the age of 14 and I am now 53.
I have the Kershaw 10 and 14 and they are awesome for what they are. They have an 18 inch but that is to long for me for what I need. I make all my sheaths for all my knives out of leather. I like things quiet. I hate kydex and nylon sheaths and usually throw them away or give them away. Don't like anything over 14 inches and thin. You have a good collection.
South East tx is full of vines and bushes snd tall pines and oyher trees like a dry jungle lol so machete is my preferred cutting tool

For me the kukris made by Condor cover the majority of my needs, and my parang and makara pick up the slack

I heard Tramontina makes a good one so i picked up an 18" with a wood handle. Seems nice so far but haven't used it yet.

i think the perfect combo for being in the wild is a Knife , Axe /Machete and preferably with paracord and ferro rod. not gonna say "Tent/Tarp as thats a no brainer if plan to stay over night, same as food and water ^^ Also dang! the one u made is a beautiful beast! definitly a machete that gets u tru the thick of a jungle or even the Zombie apocalypse >-

I really like the Condor Amalgam and the Tops Power Eagle and the K-BAR Becker Reinhardt kukri BK21 but I got the micarta handles for mine , I like that I can use them on all the larger Becker products .
How long have you had the Amalgam and what have you found it’s strengths and weaknesses to be? Thanks in advance.
@@brawndothethirstmutilator9848 it's strengths is definitely chopping, it can go through 2 or 3inch branches with 1 chop the only weakness is doing very small detailed tasks because how large the blade is but it is a fine chopper/brush cleared .

If you want to protect those leather sheaths just take a little lard and smear it onto the leather and let it soak in and that stuff will stay good forever just about you keep it from dry rotten it'll make it resistant to moisture and water and that stuff that sucks right into the leather leave it in there for about an hour or so wipe it off with paper towel it's good to go

Great video. That $46 Kershaw camp knife is perfectly fine for almost everything unless you need length. Mine has been to hell and back and I'll probably order another one in case they discontinue it
I bought a knock off Kershaw Leek for $5 one night at a bar and that fucking knife was the best knife I've ever owned. I put it through hell and back for several years until I lost it while hitchhiking around the country and it never even almost failed. I've always wondered how well authentic Kershaw knives perform. I bought a budget $15 one once and it didn't hold a candle to the knock off. I assume their higher end knives are good quality

I want one tool that I can use for chopping, cutting, splitting, and do a lot of it. A one stop that will last for many years of heavy abuse. Imagine a scenario where someone just fucks off into the wilderness permanently and needs a few tools to do everything. It would be far more useful to find a good tool to do multiple things rather than carry the best at each individual thing.
I have used my TOPS Armageddon to chop up downed trees, split firewood, make feather sticks, section a deer, and clean fish. It’s sharp enough to shave with, holds an edge for a long time, and easy to re-hone.
I had TOPS smooth down the little finger choil on the handle, and it’s 200 times more comfortable to use.
I got a custom kydex sheath that I can carry “Dundee” style, or over the shoulder in front. Or hang from my belt.
The knife does everything very well.
Check it out, it’s worth every penny. Trust your life to it.

A good way to measure the best machete length for you is to make a fist and measure the length between the knuckle and your elbow. If you can get one custom made over there in America like how we do over here in Southeast Asia that would probably be better then factory made because you can make it fit your body more.
I will say I personally like mine shorter (my forearm is 14" but my wilderness machete is only 9.5" long) if I'm going to "fuck off into the wilderness" simply because you don't really need a super long blade to clear trails in the jungle, it wastes energy if you're going to be hacking away at brush all day long versus just going through it. A shorter blade is perfect enough length to chop the fallen saplings that actually do block your path. Plus it's just a bit safer if you have people behind you since there's less chance of you hitting them by accident. You need it more for camp tasks. Also what I recommend if you're going for the one tool does everything is keep the first 3 inches of the blade blunt so you can hold it by the blade to do finer tasks like carving wood, skinning animals and etc etc. We have a technique here where you hold the machete by the blade and lock the handle between your armpit, then you run wood across the blade to carve.
Can I suggest a saw knife blade for any sawing-like activity you might need to do? I previously owned one that had it's own collapsable cover attached to it like a pocket knife, it was near Crocodee Dundee knife size, and incredibly sharp(almost needle like) out of the package. I used it to cut many thick shrubs and a rose bush down(before it needed sharpening)*, but it was less than $20! The one downside was--you'd have to sharpen it the way you do a saw...Fiskar was the brand.
*Theoretically, there is no limit to what it can cut through quickly! And, you can use it as a nife(weppun), as well, for survival.
Dunno if i want the condor heavy duty kukri or the bushcraft parang....maybe the k tact. Any feedback would be appreciated

They tend to use lower grade steels so I don’t tend to buy many of them.
In your last video you said that the cold steel trailmaster and srk are not full tang. They are the lanyard hole is through the tang, i had to replace the handle on my trailmaster. Tda kcmo

Firstly thanks for producing so much awesome content! Regarding survival machetes, I think thait really depends on the context like you allude to earlier on in the video. For myself I think that calorie conservation would be important, so instead of cross cutting wood with a machete like tool, I would prefer a folding saw probably a Silky or Bahco. In that case I would combine that with a machete that was more biased for use as a last ditch defensive tool, so for myself in a country where firearms are heavily regulated, I would hypothetically choose the Cold Steel Smatchet or one of the other 2.8mm thick historical weapon inspired machetes. Oh and a small fixed blade like a Izula 2 etc. Also if you have seen Ray Mears's technique for splitting wood with a small saw, this also might negate the requirement for a thicker knife for log splitting.

Wood gives you less blisters than plastic bc it soaks up sweat blastig don't and tubs bad gloves solves this issue tho
id say if where you live is just bush, no thick branches, 2mm of good steel and a long blade is optimal... weighs a lot less and you will bash a lot longer... Not good for chopping logs though...

First, you need to define what you mean by “survival”. Are you talking about being lost in the wilderness? Are you talking about surviving a fight?
You said to “get from point A to point B”. You mean get back to civilization? How would you get so far out that you can’t get back to civilization and you don’t have transportation? Are you talking about a plane crash? I mean, a lot of times guys talk about survival then they go into talking about building a homestead.
Seems more like you just wanted to show off your machete collection. That’s cool, but this video didn’t explain anything about how or why any of these are good for “survival” (of what?).
The right machete is a machete, not a knife nor an axe. If you're going off into the woods the same way you came into the world just with a machete, you got bigger problems than watching UA-cam videos. Just saying. Cheers.
