  • Are you guilty of this landscaping mistake? I recently saw a majestic potted palm tree that was underplanted with Lantana that was sheared back so much, all you saw was a bunch of woody stems, no leaves, and one single flower!
Lantana is a beautiful flowering plant that can be used as a spiller or a cascading ground cover in a large container. It attracts pollinators but this lantana was pruned back so much, all the leaves and flowers were missing.
TIP: When planting a cascading plant like Lantana that can easily overgrow the container, do selective pruning of stems when the plant is still young and cut back to a lower node, but don't shear this plant! You will lose all the aesthetics of the plant and compromise it's health.

Have you ever pruned anything? That got a heavy prune because of how overgrown it was. This is what most shrubs and groundcovers look like when they get a much needed overgrown pruning.

Of course, I've pruned lots of plants! I'm a professional landscape designer! I'm not questioning the pruning technique, but rather the plant selection for this public garden container! A non-woody spiller plant would be a more appropriate plant for a design that needs to look good "most" of the time!

Will the lantana come back? I just recently pruned mine

Thanks for watching! Lantana is a hardy perennial plant, and if you've pruned it recently, it should have the potential to come back, especially if the pruning was not too severe.

Yes it will grow back and with more flowers. Looks ugly for a breif moment but comes right back. Its how plants work. You grow and trim them however you want👍 Lantana are invasive in many climates. Grows without effort
