- We designed Steam Deck to give customers and developers the same Steam experience they've come to expect on any PC. Programmer Tom Bui and designer Tucker Spofford share how Steam features "just work" on Steam Deck, from Steam Community to the Steam Store and more. They'll also talk about some of the new Steam features made for Deck and crossing over to the desktop client as well.

I love that they admitted to failing to keeping big picture up to date, and dislose specifically how they plan to resolve that (updating the codebase to be the same)
It shows they care about doing the right thing even if it means acknowledging thier faults.
If we look at the UI of the custom buttons controls, they are identical, but on deck the window uses the whole screen when on pc with a monitor it's an ordinary window. Cause their library UI is built on web technologies, i suppose they are using the same method here as well. It's unfortunate, but it means that any device of any operating system can "display" their UI at least, which is a win.
I was a bit scared when seeing the new config UI as from Steam controller user's perspective this new UI is incredibly barebones and has far less features than the current configuator. Luckily the old configuator seems will still be available as there was a button displayed to open it in the Steam Input video. Its nice to see them updating BPM but I'm glad they aren't stripping away the current capabilities that we have.

@@mar2ck_ using web technology instead of "real" libraries makes the program and experience slower. It also uses more ram because it basically is a web browser. Discord for example is another program that uses web technologies. The upsides are ease of development and porting to other systems. And the downsides are that it's slow and heavy.
@@mar2ck_ as another commenter already said, using web technologies to build your "desktop" app is not the greatest idea, but it's pretty common nowadays.
Offering low res game downloads is great, not everyone needs those 4k textures, or the 50GB penalty that comes with them.
It's like HD texture packs, but in reverse! 8D
the change was done not coz they are good guys, but coz it would be nightmare for the steam deck as for the portable device. But yes...good change anyway

Offline achievements are honestly hype. New configurator too! YES

offline achievements use to be a feature, but it lead to people using secondary applications to cheat in achievements and in games like tf2 where achievements meant ingame items
Hardly matters when tf2 has servers where you just auto unlock them all anyways, learned that the hard way.
@@bitwolfy yeah but those cosmetics don't transfer to official servers where the achievement cosmetics do.
I don’t think you understand, a server in tf2 unlocked all the achievements that give items. I have all the items in my inventory, so disabling offline achievements didn’t actually stop that issue.
I have just one issue with the last part.
I wouldn't make it Steam Deck exclusive, that depot.
It should optimally be downloadable for PC as well (there are still a lot of people with low-end hardware), while the user on Steam Deck should be able to opt-in to download the original depots as well, in case they want to override the suggested settings.
Just make it a Steam Deck optimized depot and allow users with less powerful hardware to use it if they want to.
In many cases I actually want the games to be smaller and worse looking beecause I prefer higher framerate and more disk space, graphics are mostly secondary to me.

My Point is I want that available by default on Linux as well, not just the Steam Deck.
I don't want to hack stuff around in the Steam client to get the Steam Deck optimized depot.
The controller glyphs is something I’ve been waiting for my DS4 controller. This is awesome!
4:05 Thank god, now people can use the PS glyphs without having to fear Sony sueing their ass, whenever they use it.
After all, the glyphs come from the Steam integration, not from the developers themselves.
This will help a lot to show the proper glyphs in most games.

The catch is the game has to leverage the Steam Input API, and lots dont.
TBH, Sony might also be interested in this, because then people are more likely to get an PS4 or PS5 controller despite not owning an PlayStation

And I realized how annoying it is.
Except for a very few games (I think I only noticed Persona 4), most show the Xbox glyphs.
Fun fact, the controller came bundled with a copy of Last Of Us, which I had absolutely no use for because I had no PS4. But if it's free, I take it.

this might be a small thing but i love valve calling us users and customers not consumers. Feels like i'm an actual human being and not a cow.
As someone who makes heavy use of steam input and the steam controller I really hope functionality isn't lost with the changes to the config ui. There's a lot of options and I'm worried something is going to be lost.
Don't worry, options will be lost and it'll be the most random option that you need for a very specific situation.

This is super cool! I'm excited both for the deck and for QOL on desktop. I'm especially excited for the new steam deck big picture mode and the new API integrations with steam input. I'm also excited to see the new steam input GUI
Can handheld PC other than Steam Deck also download the smaller textures and assets marked "Steam Deck only" ?
Its the Developers job to set it up that the User has accsess to the same settings on pc.
The deck only marks are ment for the deck to choose default graphics settings or for example bigger UI versions that are better for deck.
Are these presenters the engineers that are working on Steam Deck? It feels like they are, and honestly that is a VERY good thing.

One problem I see is,
Valve will not make big advertising for the Deck, so this device will not be able to reach 97% of the interested audience. Please let me try to explain this.
As a father myself arguing over why a Switch is worse than a Deck for our 9 year old son, I realized mothers, or emotional people have 50-60% to say what lands under the Christmas tree. And even though my son wants a Deck, and I have a number of arguments more, Nintendo has sweet family friendly advertising.
Seeing happy families playing sweet games together, this speaks to emotional people, and that never was Valves strong side right. This is sad because on Steam I find this sweet games too.
For every Mario I find an Ori,
for every Metroid a Subnautica or No Mans Sky
for every Mario Card a Rocked League.
But a lot of families will not know that this option even exists, because Valve does not speak to this emotional people, so this kids sadly will never experience the joy of
building a city in City Skylines,
Managing a Ship in FTL,
or playing complex games like Dota 2 together with friends.
Please Valve for the love of god, try to do better with this - For example how is the kids mode stuff coming along? - Does my boy still have to play boring Android stuff or Minecraft, does he really have to get a Switch now, because of 5 Flagship Titels and Advertising?
Give a parent something emotional he can show an emotional partner - how it looks to play together with a Deck on the TV and have fun or something that pops up on Instagram, UA-cam or on TV, on a Poster in the mall - some happy faces of a healthy family sitting in a sunny living room together, like something.
Its not that hard, just be a little less pedantic with your no bullish policy, think about the kids that have to grow up without Civilisation, Homeworld, Factorio or Supreme Commander - Forged Alliance.
Sorry for this long post but I think this reminds me of the launch of Steam Machines, I had a friend who thought about buying one, but bought an Xbox because his mother: "never saw a Steammachine on TV" so was only fine with giving money for an Xbox or Playstation or Wwee. :(
It certainly should have a big ad campaign. If you just think back to when Switch was about to release, it was huge and it was everywhere.

You are a gamer(i’m assuming) you have a fundamental understanding of the gaming industry much better than your wife simply by knowing the SD exists.
Idk if your Son is asking for specific gifts under the tree or even if you guys tell him Santa is the one delivering them. I don’t even know if you are the breadwinner or if you both work.
But the point here is, she dosen’t know what she’s talking about. If you choose to give in because it’s the easiest path, that’s your prerogative. But if your the one making the money I don’t see how you don’t have more swing as to how that money is spent.
I think the Switch is cheaper, but the Steam Deck has a 1M games category, is stronger & that’s all that really matters imo.
I mean the switch can’t even run 60FPS for most games. A simple 30-60FPS comparison would improve your argument.

I partly agree, BUT I don't think it's a thing to consider in these never-ending shortages when even the current batch seems to take the whole of 2022 to ship.
For real, this isn't something you can worry about until they *actually have extras*. They're going to be shipping every single one they can make for at least 2 years, just like the index. But even worse with the current shortage of everything...
I love Valve developers! They seem the most down to earth and honest group of people

Will this be available in different colors?
Short answer: No or not for a long time.
Long answer: They showed a Portal White Colored Steam Deck and it was a prototype. They said the retail models will be black and if they were to sell or do well, they would consider releasing the Deck in more colors. But it would be a LONG time.

Others already exist and some are working on a similar device, yes. Valve is booking it for other big companies to try and join the market (Microsoft, Sony, etc)
Others already exist, but they'll have trouble matching the Steam Deck's performance for the same price. Besides, Valve doesn't care if competitors make similar hardware, as long as you still buy your games on Steam. Heck, they'd be thrilled if competitors even use Steam OS.
First of all it would not be profitable to drop Steam Decks every 2yrs, also Reservations will end in late 2022.
