Back in the 70s I worked for the agency that represented them and when their "The Manhattan Transfer" album came out they were booked at The Roxy and all of us went to see the shows and they were freakin' amazing. They were totally unique and one of a kind and I was a fan for life. Janis rocks on "Operator".
The first time I saw them I was 15 or 16 and they set the whole audience on fire. Up to today I have never forgotten that first experience and how it made me want to sing in an acapella quartet.
Just saw them in San Jose last Sunday. Thirty years later, they are as great as ever!! Janis can still sing her behind off on this song. They can sing in any style, with beautiful harmony. (with Laurel then, and Cheryl now)
It was the keenest swing songs that I loved so dearly in the past when I heard that this vocal jazz group also released "Boy From New York City". "Operator" was the joy of myself loving the Manhattan Transfer! Not just the other famous number by them......!!!!
I have been a Blues/Jazz. Manhatten Transfer has been a favorite since they began in 1969. They are high energy, very entertaining and you will leave their performance with a wide grinn on your face. Top-o-the-line!!!!
2020'💕🎶Operator💕🎶, what Tight Harmonic Acappella Quartet👍, its been since mid 70's when first hearing Manhattan Transfer 🎶Trickle,Trickle💕🎶, then I ordered the Anthology/Birdland in cassette📼 form😅😅, Yep!😅 I still have a Cassette Playerrrrrrr😅😂Thanks for Sharing!!
I worked for the talent agency that represented them back in the 70's and they played the Roxy in LA and we all went to the shows and they were amazing. Those were fun days. Great talent back then.
I used to worked for the agency that represented them back in the 70's and they played the Roxy in LA and we all went to the shows. They were amazing in person. Those were fun days. Great talent back then.
From Tim's opening remarks and the closing credits, I would guess that this is the last song the group sang on the last of the four TV shows of August, 1975. A great performance.
I remember it. That summer replacement show was my introduction to MT. Summer replacement shows were often pretty great. Too bad they don't do it anymore.
Laurel Masse v roku 2014 dovrši 63 rokov. V poradi tretia pieseň z albumu z roku 1975 a ich prvý hit v USA. V septembri 1975 obsadil 22.m. a päť rokov bol ich jediným úspechom v USA. V UK boli populárnejší. V rokoch 1976 až 1980 mali v rebríčku 8 skladieb vrátane Chanson D Amour hitu č. 1.
LAUREL,U R SIMPLY(OR AS MULLS WORLDWIDE WOULD SAY,ZIMPLEE) THE BEST.ALL MY SOLDIER BUDDIES HAVE NOW ALSO HEARD OPERATOR!LOVE KOJAK,KOPTERKOJAK@ UTUBE/SOLDIER(LA TAXI LIVE)
I wonder if a lot of church musicians around 1975 heard that song and wanted to use that as a gospel jazz number, because of that signature line, "Give me Jesus on the line!!!"
@keyjack100 - I believe they still exist and check the youtube for more of Manhattan Transfer. What a wonderful group so refreshing with their harmony, style and class act - I definitely love them!!!
i think you are missing the point. the song is a metaphor. it isn't meant to be taken literally. we all know that there aren't ATandT's in heaven. it's symbolism.
+Tim Denton Janis was always the lead singer on this song and many others...Laurel Masse was the soloist on Scotch and Soda ... she left the group '78 / '79 and was replaced by Cheryl Bentyne until the group disbanded ~ :-)
Manhattan Transfer didn't disband. They have a new bass singer in Trist Curless. He substituted for Tim during his illness and after his death, Trist became a permanent member of the vocal group. They're scheduled to perform around the world this year and the first part of 2017.
um... AT&T... the telephone company? stands for american telephone and telegraph? i just thought that was something everyone knew. are you not from the united states?
Great song, great arrangement, but what are the stupid dancers doing there? Send them home. Excess baggage. Those know it all idiot producers just can't leave well enough alone can they? It always ceases to amaze me that when they do a country show, they have to have hay bales and Broadway dancers with guys in checkered shirts and girls in big fluffy skirts prancing around. Do they honestly think they are doing something worth watching? Janice Segal is something else. Viva Manhattan Transfer
I'm an old guy and remember watching this performance when it originally aired. Blew me away, just as it does today.
You and me both. No better than this!
Any form of praising GOD is Welcome in my BOOK!!!

The Manhattan Transfer was one of my all time favorites for great vocals and remarkable stage presence.

This is such a fantastic and wonderful song and a great performance !!!
One of their greatest. Laurel videos are rare! Thanks much!

You've got Ron Field to thank for that.

Yup....still a great song

My church choir actually did this song a while back.
Jus so beautiful
REMEMBERING TIMOTHY "TIM" HAUSER (DECEMBER 12, 1941 - OCTOBER 16, 2014) [12/12/2015]
@keyjack100 - I believe they still exist and check the youtube for more of Manhattan Transfer.

@keyjack100 Yes! I went to see them tonight! STILL AMAZING.
Daneacts - What series was this, and from what year is it? It's fantastic!
May God Be Praised.
ME 2!!!! love them..
It's Janis singing the lead. No doubt about it.
i think you are missing the point. the song is a metaphor. it isn't meant to be taken literally. we all know that there aren't ATandT's in heaven. it's symbolism.
superb!
No doubt plus it seems big bush also gone forever. Oh the 70's how we miss thee.
dis is a phat party song
They can sing but the woman in the yellow dress is the queen dancer. who is she??? I wanna marry her : D
They had a summer replacement series sometime in the late 1970's. Maybe around 1977?
1975.
@keyjack100 , they sure du, coz we all still listen to them, how could you not ay
the single version entered Cashbox Sept 27, 1975
@keyjack100 yes they do!!
Is Laurel the singer on the recorded version of this instead of Janis? Sounds just like this on the record. I always thought it was Janis.

Rita Geller
Thanks Rita. That's good to hear. Tim will be sorely missed though.
this band is cool, Laurel is off the hook, but it's good to song, when your wondering
it is also just a song. so. yeah :D
um... AT&T... the telephone company? stands for american telephone and telegraph? i just thought that was something everyone knew. are you not from the united states?
LOL idk why people discounted this, Clever, sir ;)
Who sings lead on this song?
Who sings lead on Chanson d'Amour?
Thanks
Both songs are sung by the beautiful very talented Janis Siegel.
Anyone in the audience that night who wasn't moving to this number was dead.
wouldn't that be nice if I had a direct line, reverence, and faith, still calling
11 people refused a collect call.
the chick in yellow is drunk lol
Janis Siegel
