    Pretty cool to see younger trainers use old techniques. Been training around 55 years. Don't allow pulling & only use harnesses for work related pulling, i.e., tracking. The bump with the leg, attention getter. Great, no treats, no clicker. You don't over talk the dog, either. Body language, awesome. Love watching you work with calm & being the lead, alpha. Thanks for showing there's good trainers out there. I've seen some who are too into themselves and take longer to train a dog because of that. Great!

      Hey I realize this is a pretty old comment but do you have any examples on what newer trainers are doing that is slowing down the dog training process? It seems like there's always conflicting information out here on the youtube. Would love to hear your thoughts.

      Only positive training, force free, is slowing the training world down. To ignore important aspects of dog behaviour is detrimental

      I can attest to this. The first year or so we worked with trainers who taught the positive only treat reward based system. Sure Our German shepherd/husky learned all of the tasks rather quickly, but the only way to get his attention was to essentially bribe him with treats. Not effective... after working with a trainer who uses a more old school approach (Koehler method)... our dog has completely transformed in just a few weeks. Loose leash walking with no treats, fully attentive to us in areas with distractions etc.

      Got any tips for doing this with a short dog like a Corgi? It's been a nightmare so far. Trying to avoid using the pinch collar if possible, just don't want to rely on it like we have in the past. We took him hiking with us (he walks great around the house and yard on a leash, does ok-ish around the neighborhood) a few months ago and it was awful. He absolutely did. not. care about the martingale collar tightening on him. No response at all to corrections. Constant pulling. We had a front clip harness with us, but I guess it's not properly fitted? He just pulled anyway and would go on three legs most of the time because it shifted due to his pulling and made it hard for him to use one of his front legs. smh

      @@countryrat6t6 Use a prong. Far better than him choking himself on a collar or bent out of shape on a harness. Those front ones aren’t comfortable for a dog either.

    Taught my 8 month husky this way with the slip collar just once. He learned to heel properly in 30 minutes. Then we went out for a 30 minute walk with the slip collar once too. Tried to trigger results with a clicker and treats whenever he heeled so he also got a positive reinforment when doing things right.
    Later the same they tried the same with its normal walk collar and he now pulls 10% of what he used to. You just made my family’s life WAY easier. Thanks man!

    Great video! But could you make a vid on pulling outdoors around distractions?

    • @heathyrzang7261
      @heathyrzang7261 5 років тому +15

      it is going to be the exact same concept. The only differences will be that it will be harder for you as the owner to remain as calm as you were inside practicing. it might take a little longer in order for them to learn the desired behavior in all the various distractions. So as long as you don’t let that frustrate you, make you impatient, or cause you to be reactive some how then your dogs will follow your lead and feed off your energy. Calm, consistent, and timing of corrections.

      I just acquired my 5 1/2 month old 60 pound German Shepherd rescue 4 weeks ago. Never was on a leash. I have not owned a dog in over 10 years. He does fantastic on a leash now, with a few exceptions. He was wild at first, but I kept at it each day, two or three walks outside. I went from a halter, to a martingale, now a choke, and a prong on order. I allowed sniffing the first week, and even now within reason, because this is new. Because we don’t have lots of sidewalks, I find walking in street less smells to tempt him. I have watched tons of video on training and find the more you expose to stimuli, the better adjusted the dog will be. So now I continue my pressure to allow some sniffs but to continue on the walk. It takes much patience, time but in the end, my pup can walk passed bikes, kids, people, cars and most squirrels unless they are 3 feet away 😬... oh, and after 15 minutes, he tires and he gets more calm, more happy, more confident on our walks. I do sometimes have to apply more pressure, correction if he starts to chase after a bike, or squirrel, but each week that passes, the less I have to correct, and he is doing better now, leash is loose for a little more than half of our walk time, 30 to 40 minutes. He also loves parks, so I take him to different parks and he loves going up the steps on children’s playground equipment, (only when children are not present of course;) ... I thought I would have to give him up the first few weeks because his play biting, jumping, lunging was out of control. It is only when I stopped the only positive training and corrected him with the choke collar that he began to stop the unwanted behavior. He is happier, and like a child, is loving that I am in control, and he doesn’t have to be so anxious now, knowing when I am in control of him, he is happier, more confident and a beautiful loving precious 60 pound puppy that doesn’t pull on leash, lunge at me, bite me playfully anymore. We still have work to do, but he has come such a long way in a short time. Consistently and his learning to trust me has helped so much! Love love Tom’s videos! He is the best!

    I'm so grateful for this video! My husky mix is turning a year old next month and he's always had problems with walking here and there. His halti collar helps A LOT, but he has a habit of doing the "Naruto pull" (that's what I call it. Head down and forward). He sometimes whines when we go for long walks or public places. I used some of the techniques in this video during our walk into town this afternoon and he was AMAZING. No pulling, didn't lay down/refuse to get up... and I walked home with a Starbucks drink in my hand without spilling a drop. This video was a life changer, thank you guys!!

She pulled on a leash even worse than the Siberian huskies in this video. We had to resign ourselves to having her pull carts and sleds with one or two little children for exercise, besides running and swimming. She could do flips in the air like an acrobat. She lived to 16 . Our vet said that she probably lived twice as long as her breed when they are used as working dogs in the Arctic.

    Video/Discussion suggestion: Our husky runs with us regularly and we are steadily getting better with him not pulling the leash and learning to stay beside us. Haven't done it yet, but we're hoping in winter to try out skijoring. Could you provide some content on how to manage teaching him when he is allowed to pull us and when he is not? Could this type of training be specifically associated with wearing a harness vs a leash? (Like, you're wearing a harness, ok you can pull... you're wearing a leash now, not okay to pull?)
    Thanks for your great videos!

    • @serenasin
      @serenasin 5 років тому

      Dogs are really smart that kind of association would work but I would personally combine commands with it. If your up for it you can train your dog to pull on command, go left, go right, stop, speed up etc. Then on walks you can have a command for heel or just loose leash. It would be hard to train at the beginning but as soon as the dog understands the difference between the loose leash run and the pulling it should be okay. I wouldn't be surprised if its something that your husky picks up quickly. Pulling, running its in their natural drive. Giving your dog an outlet to use the drive they were bred for is great!

    Thanks so much for all the help, Tom! I've been watching so many of your videos for awhile now. I have a female husky myself and have tried to work with her as best I can. I even was fortunate enough to work with Larry Krohn when he was out here in Texas a couple months ago. He told my wife and I the same thing in terms of using your body to teach the dog to respect your space. My only problem is that I'm still having problems with her engagement and pulling while outside on walks. Larry Krohn was able to get her in a good heel position with just her flat collar so I know its definitely me doing something wrong. Is there anything I should try to do before I continue using structured walks as a part of her training?

    • @robinrutherfordcost4748
      @robinrutherfordcost4748 Рік тому

      Larry Krohn has a video of his one pup that he couldn't get to engage with him. He never had that before so he used her feeding time. Took her food, hid it in a pocket on his body, went about his business in the back yard - scooping poop, checking flowers,etc. Pups only got a treat when she actually came over and checked in with him. Suzanne Clothier's automatic check in is also helpful. I used his method with my one Dobe - worked like a charm. Hope that helps.

    If you ever even stated you are using a slip collar I missed it. I wish you had gone over correct placement of those including where the slip knot should be, and usage because obviously you could injure a dog by incorrect use. My 6 month old Husky will run full bore at any dog or person (not aggressively but to play) she sees and can literally pull herself off her feet when she runs out of leash. She either has not figured out or more likely too exited to care just when that happens. I shudder to think what would happen if she was on a slip/choke collar. I'm eager to try out your ideas, and I did like the video. I just think that should have been covered in detail.
    EDIT: Tried already - she twists around and gets the leash between her teeth :(

  • @Jaz-ht5ff
    @Jaz-ht5ff 6 років тому +10

    I very much agree! a pressure and release system works very well! But i noticed that you were using a check chain on this particular dog? check chains are designed to cause pain so that the dog doesn't pull (no pulling=no pain). So i am wondering if you are really teaching him not to pull or if you are just showing him that pulling = pain. To me that doesn't "teach" the dog not to pull. It simply scares/guilts them into not pulling because they don't want pain.
    Just like every other thing I post this is my own opinion. You don't have to like it if you disagree. Everyone trains dogs differently and if you don't like my ideas so be it! You can move on and just forget about it. no hate intended!

    • @tomdavisofficial
      @tomdavisofficial  6 років тому +2

      Dog Sense I always respect everyone’s opinion. You are absolutely correct and confirmed my beliefs. All dogs want to pull and go go, no dog slooooooows down and stop and walks great bc they want walk slow with their owner, it’s all about discipline. Why do we not speed? Bc were afraid of getting a ticket right?

    • @Jaz-ht5ff
      @Jaz-ht5ff 6 років тому +5

      yes you are correct (about speeding tickets) but I'm not sure you understand what I am saying. What I'm trying to say is that check chains cause pain and stress. this doesn't teach the dog anything except for being fearful of pain on a walk. This doesn't "TEACH" the dog anything. it just scares him. Sorry for the misunderstanding before! i will try and be more clear next time. Of course this is just my opinion but if the only way you can control a dog is by force and inflicting pain are you really an incredible trainer? i do not doubt your abilities or your love of dogs but I do not like your methods....do you ever use positive reinforcement based training?

    • @tomdavisofficial
      @tomdavisofficial  6 років тому +16

      Dog Sense right and I agree in a perfect world I’d love to use 0 pressure. But what happens when the dog says “I know what you WANT” but screw off? Then what? Okay sorry dog owner your dog blew me off in complete understating of what I want. Then what? Okay pull pull pull do what you want walk all over me! I’ve trained for years with purely positive and I still do for certain situations. I use a TON of positive reinforcement in every single session I do. But that has limitation I’m a realist and I know certain dogs don’t give a shit about what you want. So 100% I believe putting a consequence on a Dog is crucial in shaping some dogs. What if I told you this owner has been to 3 other trainers to get the huskies to stop pulling using all positive methods and it literally has done nothing? To think all dogs are “TAUGHT” under the circumstances of positive reinforcement is so much bullshit it makes me sick and I have to clean up the messes they create. Again I’m not being one sided I 100% use purely positive when applicable but some dogs need disciple and consequence.

    • @Jaz-ht5ff
      @Jaz-ht5ff 6 років тому +1

      i completely respect your opinion. I understand your frustration with having to clean up other trainer's mess. It can be very tricky trying to train a dog that three other trainers have already tried to train. that is very good to hear that you use lots of positive reinforcement during your training sessions! I do agree that some dogs do need to learn the consequences of their behaviors but i do believe that pain should NOT be one of them. Again there are many different ways of training a dog and I do not believe that there is only one way to train a dog. I just have my preferred techniques and you have yours! we don't have to agree but i still think pain shouldn't be part of the equation. i am however willing to accept that i may have jumped to conclusions before knowing the whole story.

    Love your videos. YOU are a dog whisperer I truly admire. My question: Is there a trick to the "pop" on the lead? As a strong but older woman(62) I find it hard to impact with this technique. My female 70 lb./3 yrs in November GShepherd purebred pulled for a long time on loose leash and was always in front until I employed a herm Sprenger to settle her down. I rescued her 5 months ago. Don't know her background other than she is no doubt unsocialized properly, comes from working line parents and shows symptoms of abuse. She is great with people and my 14 yr. old pug/boston mix. she respects his space. But I worry her getting away and biting another dog? She is afraid of storms and sudden movements. Her dog aggressive reactivity on walk has gone from 100% to about 20% with "Leave It", command firmly given, treats for good response and restraint when needed followed by loose leash. Now using the slip collar. Was using 2 leashes for security. Is it possible a woman hasn't enough upper body strength to correctly give the "pop"? or maybe my timing is off? Thanks, Tom. 💜💜You are awesome.

    Amazing video.. I have a 2 year old Husky, who pulls on the leash alot. When I usually try to stop by standing still, he's got a habit of trying to reverse backwards from the harness which then leads to him escaping out of it - and he runs away. I have tried to flip to other directions aswell, in the hopes of making him feel like he isn't in control, he just pulls to the direction I want to go to aswell. By the way, hes an angel when he's at home, but hes a completely different dog outside - he's out of control and is way to excited. Any advice on what I should do or go about it this issue? Much appreciated. Thanks once again for such awesome advice.

      Hi, mine dies this flip trick too so I'm worried using a slip lead will mean he's out if it in seconds. I've a front lead harness that works reasonably well but all 29kg of him at 7 months is straining my arm now. I find collars conebiff easily no matter how tight I fix them. He flips round pulls back and slips out 🙄

      @@aliyahadaanni Try getting a properly fit prong collar. I've used it on mine and he's walking next to me with no problems. I correct him whenever he's making mistakes (focusing on other things) and praising him when he's doing well (walking next to me). It's the best thing that I've bought for my husky for a very long time - and I've tried almost everything. From escape proof harnesses to different collars.
      It's a huge difference and it's signifcantly noticeable. He used to do tricks, jumping and pulling really hard on the leash and now all of that is non-exitent. If you're still worried about him escaping you can put a harness on him along with the prong collar and attach the two together for safety measures.

Susan Garrett has a video of 20 games to play when you can't get out to exercise them due to the weather or injury. Usually getting them to think is super helpful. How many commands can they do (on one cue) in a row - without any unasked for behaviors?Hope that helps.

    I have a Great Dane that walks fine on the leash but we live in a city environment and when dogs pass on the sidewalk he pulls and drags me to meet them. A separate issue is that he gets all up in their faces and sniffs them with no manners. So the combination of pulling and getting in their faces excitedly makes a lot of dogs snap/get scared of him. How do you correct pulling when it's only around other dogs?

      @@aliyahadaanni front pull harnesses are the "kind way" basically when your dog pulls the front pull redirects it to the side, they're not very effective with dogs that aren't trained to walk heel so they're effectively useless. You want to start out with a slip lead, something that controls the dogs head. Once they understand how to walk on a slip you can transfer to a harness and just do the same training.
