Fowler imo is also a great example of how soldiers are treated by societies after a war. He served, he learnt skills, then he was put in the same oppressive situation as everyone else, where everything he's become alienates him. His veteran status means nothing in the face of the system.

I think your reading of Fowler, that his inherent revolutionary spirit is misdirected by his patriotism, is spot on.
Also, thank you for an excellent reading on one of my favorite childhood movies

Great video, have loved this radical little film since I was a kid, It’s basically a mash up of The Great Escape and Orwell’s Animal Farm. Think there’s lots of ways to read Fowler, I find it interesting that he is the only character to not trust rocky when he shows up, he seems to read him accurately but then not have anything specific to point too to justify it so he defaults to his ingrained bigotry and just keeps calling him a yank, which leads to Ginger and the chickens not taking his skepticism seriously. But by the end even he, the seemingly most unlikely character to be willing to change, has apologised for his biases to rocky and joined the collective movement, which is a nice message I think.

Chicken run was so formative in my childhood though I think its hard to absorb revolutionary messages at that age unfortunately like (bugs life). This video was incredible deep dive and I am now going to have to hook up my VHS to watch chicken run again. Thank you for the reminder and the hopeful message it brings.

Chicken Run is on one of my favorite Wikipedia lists, "Films that Depict Class Struggle," but I hadn't seen the movie since I was in like 8th grade so I had no idea why lol thank you for the explanation!

One thing that I think is sweet is the fact that Rocky never really mentions where from the US he's from. I know it's a small detail, but I like it. I love that little bit for the audience to interpret. Makes him more personal.

Something I havent seen brought up in this video is that compared to real farms these chickens actually receive 'better care' than a typical battery hen.

Watched chicken run countless times, it was my family's favorite movie; I didn't have the context and knowledge to really understand the morals of the story back then, so thanks for putting this together :)

Mr. Tweedy absolutely pushed the door onto her. After the door falls he doesn't scramble to lift the door, he just slowly walks away. I hope he realizes how cruel she was both to the chickens and himself and left her to make apple pies.

I, admittedly, have not seen Chicken Run since its original theatrical run in *checks Google* ...oh, I really am old...but I loved this video! It makes me want to go back and re-watch it now, because I definitely didn't remember it having such revolutionary themes. Great job!

I think I'm in the same boat... even seeing a lot of these shots, I was thinking, "wait, I did actually see this film, right?!??" ... :-o ... I'll have to find it again!
And don't worry... I remember seeing Creature Comforts in an animation festival... you're young yet. ;)

I feel Rocky is a similar case Fowler as it's made clear that he want's exactly what ginger and the flock want but he's held back by fear and self preservation

I was surprised to see I hadn't yet been exposed to such an amazing and big channel, until I noticed it hadn't 813k subscribed. I imagine how much time it took you to create one of the best analyses I've ever watched and how sad it is that the channel unfortunately stopped before getting the recognition it deserved.
Anyways, I just wanted to show my appreciation. Thanks for the great work!

This was my favorite movie as a kid, and it probably still is. When we used to watch it at home we did it with the Spanish dub, so i think a lot of the jokes were translated to fit with a spanish audience. But anyways i love how this movie is son blatant about it's very mature and relevant messages but can still be enjoyed by kids who just watch it for the cheer beauty and humor of it

this video essay is just. so. good. i started a bit disappointed when you said only three things you were going to talk about but then you kinda dissected the whole (or at least most) of the movie anyways? with an amazing focus on character, class and gender??? and with excellent editing and hilarious jokes???? i subbed so quick i swear to god
im really fascinated by this movie, its really one of the few childrens movie (besides Robots of course) that actually depicts organizing as a force for good instead of having a sole hero singlehandedly defeat an evil system by themselves (along with The Love Interest and The Comic Relief). how all the chickens work together to their freedom, how ginger manages to be a great leader while also being so selfless, and the impeccable metaphor for everything from forced labor to the prison system to gender exploitation, its all so, so good... also 16:00 That Scene. as a film student that is just one of the Best Movie Scenes of All Time. the music, the camera movement, the lighting, the expressions on those clay chickens faces, the perfectly timed cuts, the Weight of it.... god its all so good!!!!!
and that last chicken picking flowers... im so glad you talked about her, thats the sort of little details that absolutely make an ending shine 💞 my biggest fear for the sequel is that the ending of this movie is so utopic and beautiful, i dont want to lose that image of all those happy chickens with their chicks working together, having fun and living peacefully.
(i agree wholeheartedly, babs and bunty are a couple and theres nothing the movie can say to change my mind. its impossible there werent any lesbian/bi chickens there at all)
im really looking forward to your next video. this was a great 29 minutes 41 seconds, and im really hungry for more.
(also did you know theres a small movie-related book about the diaries of several of the characters??? with an introduction by Che Guevara talking about the great Comrade Ginger??????? where in one of the chapters Ginger finally grieves over Edwinas death and is visited by her ghost??????????)

Thank you so much for this comment, it's so sweet and thoughtful! I'm so glad you liked it (and also that you got the humor because I worry about that all the time!) I had no idea about the book, I'll look out for it, that's really interesting! Aardman did such a great job with these characters and concept that it makes sense for them to want to revisit them again, as you've said it's just hoping they hold on to the more revolutionary themes, especially right now!

IM BACK I THINK I FIGURED OUT WHY MRS TWEEDY MARRIED MR TWEEDY
simply put perhaps tweedys farm had a good amount of wealth on its hands before the stock market crashed. Mrs tweedy got engaged to Mr tweedy before is crashed and mrs tweedy couldn’t back out of the wedding when it did. And now she’s unhappy

Quick fact: mrs tweedy doesn’t die! In “cutting loose: behind the fences of tweedy farm” it is found out that she and mr tweedy moves to Scotland to work in seaweed. And I think from what happened from what she words stuff in the book her and mr tweedy might be on HOPEFULLY better terms. I would love to hear a deep dive about the books and how it expands the universe from you. I really enjoyed listening to this while funny enough drawing chicken run OCs (yes it’s a thing and it’s a cool pocket of the fandom)

One small thing: it looks like you're linking to the folks listed at 9:09 in the description (thank you!), however it's a bit confusing because you don't preface the links, and thus at first glance it kinda looks like you're linking to a 4-part series from Kathrin. Oh that's good, a feminist reading of chicken run in which Mrs Tweedy is the victim, I'm filing this under reasons why people point and laugh at modern gender politics! I think the best conclusion to draw from all this even if you take it seriously is: it's not the fifties anymore. It's a great fun film and I love it to bits, but I think you might be reading a bit deeper into it than the filmmakers really intended...
