debunking the 'autistic terrorist' myth
this narrative is myth-taken
I have never made a more literal autistic edit than when saying ‘reading this document’ with footage of Vision reading a document, it was a choice and im standing by it
Also if you spot the flaw in the quote about autism, violence, victimization and perpetration
-no you don’t-
00:00 intro
03:49 does being autistic make you more likely to perpetuate bigoted violence?
13:01 men and terrorism
17:48 autism and violence?
26:35 autism and empathy (aka the f***ing dreaded empathy question)
32:01 performative empathy (and the demonization of neurodivergence)
41:07 conclusion
For more information, particularly on mass shootings, I would really recommend looking into the work by The Violence Project, all the stats are there and it's really easy to follow and extremely telling (most mass shootings happen at work, usually by people who have just been fired, something I didn't know but is the most unsurprising thing in the world)
www.theviolenceproject.org/
I would also like to take this moment to really emphasise that people should look into Phillip Nicholson's case. It's extremely representative of a lot of issues autistic people face taken to it's most extreme (which is still common even in it's most extreme form), but also; he deserved to be here and happy, and it's so unfair he's not, and more people should know his name.

Here’s a video no one asked for touching on Christmas, masculinity, capitalist realism, scarcity culture and a segment where I get very overly sincere about Robin Williams & I’m still anxious about it but if there’s anyone who is worth being sincere about it’s Robin Williams. I come at many of the things in this video from a very cisnormative position, I wish I'd mentioned this in the video but...

Anyway to distract myself from... *gestures to everything*, I talk about the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope, it's history, and how it both erases and stigmatizes neurodiverg...
As INFP with undiagnosed Adhd, I resonate with manic pixie dream girl A LOT --- but normal people are meh and blaming it to us as if no self identity and we're faking it. i watched amelie that's why I named my daughter amelie
It actively drives me insane to have the traits of a MPDG described as basically being impossible to find in a real person when I and a lot of people I know personally (including my own mother) are literally exactly like this. 🙃
5:40 This rant dovetails nicely with my theory that in the real-life social dynamics of autistic romance, the guy is often a Manic Pixie Dream Dude masking as an Introverted Male Sadsack and the girl is a Introverted-ish Female Sadsack masking as an extroverted MPDG (I say Introverted-ish because I see enough layers to what's going on that I'm confused as to whether she's underlyingly an introvert or extrovert, and trying to explain what I see would blow this comment up into a wall of text I don't have time to write). In many or most cases, neither of them has any clue that either is autistic. The guy falls in love because of their shared autism (without knowing it being able to express that that's why), but is too timid to pursue the relationship. Then he has an 18:06 moment, and professes undying love to the girl, who thinks that all he sees is the MPDG mask and thinks he'd be disappointed with her Female Sadsack personality, so she's rejects him (when really he's managed to recognize a fellow autist without knowing our being able to express that that's what he's looking for). Brokenhearted, he goes and becomes a screenwriter and starts writing films where the autistic dude knows how to explain his feelings and gets a happy ending with the autistic girl, but because he doesn't know autism is involved, and still doesn't actually know how to explain his own feelings, he only manages to write things like 1:21 and only very rarely like 5:40. I mostly use "female sadsack" here for symmetry with "male sadsack" to highlight that there seems to be some kind of role reversal that happens due to masking, not to imply that autistic women can be reduced merely to a bunch of sad feelings.
I just realized the connection between Edwina's death and Anne Boleyn's fate...both offed because of their failure to produce. 😢
0:29 "I was 11 and had just started high school" and here I thought it was crazy how fast *Buffy* had to grow up
Tara is the nicest being in the Buffyverse. I'm sorry Fred. haha Tara and Buffy's friendship is one of my favorite things about season 5 and 6, so sad they didn't show more of it. I love Tara :( We should all be more like her!
based therefore subbed
When you onow the exact episode and scene from a single facial expression lol.
Came here for Tara because I love that character, but wanted to comment about the section on Dawn. I was never one of those people that disliked Dawn, as I saw similar to you how she was going through a lot, and it was understandable she was a bit bratty occasionally. But holy crap, when you put it all together as a list, it really drives that point home, and I went from someone who felt very neutral about Dawn to actively really liking and connecting to her. As an adult, I really appreciate Dawn and how she reacted and responded to those things in her life more. As someone who’s been in situations similar to her in recent years, I can now connect with a lot that I couldn’t on the initial experience.
As a neuronorm straight white guy with no personal relatability to this - I gotta say, this is one of the most interesting, well thought out and profound videos I've seen on youtube in a very long time. Great job and thank you for opening my eyes to a whole new way of seeing the world.
Hopefully it’s not to late to inform you about this 😅 Soo I found the top 😅 it’s by the brand “Chloé” Great video! Thanks for going into detail so much ❤️
Is anyone gonna say it? I'm gonna say it. FUCK SEEING RED!
Sooo I've just watched your Hermione video AND this one, and as an autistic person, I can't thank you enough for the nuance and depth you bring to these discussions. I instantly subscribed. Thank you for sharing your voice. Much love from Latin America ❤
23 years later and I'm only now realising: _How does Fetcher know what a fish is?_
I never thought as Babs as being neurodivergent, but it makes sense.
Mrs Tweedy wore even more eye makeup in the sequal.
This film hits different as an adult.
Kind of ironic Chicken Run seems like a concentration camp analogy and one of the main characters is voiced by an anti-Semite.
You are certainly a modern European white woman. Have run with the gangs of Islamic men you let into your nation. You can never be happy because you’ll continue to find things that offend you that no one else cares about. BTW, your ideal of having kids in ‘freedom’ just means being a trad wife. You’re a hypocrite like all of your political party. Peace.
I was surprised to see I hadn't yet been exposed to such an amazing and big channel, until I noticed it hadn't 813k subscribed. I imagine how much time it took you to create one of the best analyses I've ever watched and how sad it is that the channel unfortunately stopped before getting the recognition it deserved. Anyways, I just wanted to show my appreciation. Thanks for the great work!
So how chicken can produce kids without mal 😅 this movie has a big problem.
Great video, have loved this radical little film since I was a kid, It’s basically a mash up of The Great Escape and Orwell’s Animal Farm. Think there’s lots of ways to read Fowler, I find it interesting that he is the only character to not trust rocky when he shows up, he seems to read him accurately but then not have anything specific to point too to justify it so he defaults to his ingrained bigotry and just keeps calling him a yank, which leads to Ginger and the chickens not taking his skepticism seriously. But by the end even he, the seemingly most unlikely character to be willing to change, has apologised for his biases to rocky and joined the collective movement, which is a nice message I think.
Im the dude version. Only I look like I'm in Black Sabbath, so, people don't expect it.
This time in history seems to be the age of middle aged men working out their attachment trauma by escaping the real world into a swashbuckling fantasy and discovering that, jokes, they love their family lol. Robin Willams' characters, i would argue, ticks all these boxes in not one but TWO films, Jumanji and Hook. The trope of "middle aged dude escaping his life by going on a hero's journey (back into childhood by the way - whether it's Neverland or a board game, it's still a kid's fantasy) and learning that he is loved and needed by his family and therefore has a reason to live" ~ that shit needs to be studied.
Stopped watching as soon as u say your pro nouns
Congratulations?
*pronouns *said
she's not dead she's in the sequel.
"if nothing we do matters then all that matters is what we do"
Oh that's good, a feminist reading of chicken run in which Mrs Tweedy is the victim, I'm filing this under reasons why people point and laugh at modern gender politics! I think the best conclusion to draw from all this even if you take it seriously is: it's not the fifties anymore. It's a great fun film and I love it to bits, but I think you might be reading a bit deeper into it than the filmmakers really intended...
that wasn't the point of this video at all, did you even watch it
9:05 late to the party on this one, but given who Spike is, “Seeing Red” was completely in character IMO. His character has always had a intense correlation between love, sex, and violence. He was turned into a vampire while attempting to process feelings of love and loss, which is also a violent process in and of itself. Then with Dru, he openly admits his entire relationship revolves around: “I’ll tie her up, torture her, until she loves me again!” (Lovers Walk). He was conditioned to associate violence and sex with love (similar to how the Initiative tries to condition human violence with pain). His whole life revolves around this, so sadly “Seeing Red” isn’t out of character, as bad as we, the fandom, see it.
Oh i hate this subject because i was liyerally objectified by someone who loves that movie with that manic pixie drean girl and he expected me to be that. But i need this to understand whar peoples actually think and see and avoid it so. Im learning. Man people are crazy man man man
It was that movie with Ramona flowers oommgg
Amazing breakdown
Incredibly important and well done. Thank you for making this.
I don´t like this trend of pathologizing behaviors. While quirky girls can be autistic/neurodivergent some girls are just quirky and it doesn't necesarily mean they are autistic.
That’s the thing, autistic isn’t a negative pathology.. but the stereotype you viewed in the media is. Neurodivergent is adhd & autistic, both are neurotypes that have traits that are shown in these characters behaviors. It’s not a negative thing to recognize that the traits that they are written to have are actually Neurodivergent and people who are Neurodivergent relate to them, even people who are undiagnosed and don’t know they are adhd or autism relate to them and then later find out that the cause for how they don’t fit in socially in the world is actually because of not knowing they were Neurodivergent
If it barks like a dog, it ain't a cat.
Love to see positive masculinity
But some girls just have a quirky nature doesn't mean their autistic and yes women can have that type of personality.
13:15 "When I say that the traits of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl are described as too other wordly to actually be real, that's how a lot of autistic women grow up to feel, too. Like aliens". Damn. That hit home in a major way.
Something I havent seen brought up in this video is that compared to real farms these chickens actually receive 'better care' than a typical battery hen.
It hurts to be so misunderstood
Thank you for this defense of Dawn! I admire her so much.
Brilliant analysis, from a new subscriber!
If you don't have a Ginger, be the Ginger.
Chick Run 2: Free Range
Man, this video is awful.
Fantastic essay, can't find anything to disagree with!!! Brilliant work!!
Can I rant about Xander? Much as I hate The Lie, him telling Dawn what Spike tried to do to Buffy was far worse. How dare he, how fucking DARE he take away Buffy’s very RIGHT to tell who she wants to tell? And I already know the response some are going to want to give. “But he was right, Spike tried to **** Buffy, there’s no way Xander would have taken Dawn to him.” And you’re right. And if Xander had instead said “look, I know you like him, but trust me, he’s dangerous,” and Dawn kept pushing, I’d have forgiven that, absolutely. But he didn’t. He said it in the most disgustingly tactless and casual way. I would NEVER forgive someone who revealed something that traumatic and personal. Sorry, I’ll get off the soapbox now. Loved this video. Tara was such a fabulous character and she deserved so much better.
aye, hope you haven't stopped making videos. a lot of what you have a had to say has made a huge impression on me.
My parents have this theory that Autistic people actually feel empathy on a incredibly powerful level since we very very rarely become a bully or turn to harming others in order to relieve our pain. They got this for both me and other autistic kids they have cared for always turning to self harm instead of hurting others. The reason we dissociate or things go over our head is because we have to. Our brain is protecting us from worser harm. I think they actually might be right. A lot of “friends” I had would tell me I was a robot when in actuality they would scream at their parents, brag about knowing porn and other harmful things. It hurt so much seeing them destroy themselves and not being able to do anything but watch. I hated every second of it and I wanted so badly to never leave there side because I was scared they would get worse. But in doing that I exhausted myself to the point of being numb. To hear them say I couldn’t feel emotions made me feel sad. Not angry just sad. I had to leave them because I needed to take care of myself for my family and I’m better but uh. Yeah! Just something to think about. 😅 Also no one hate Sociopaths(forgot the proper term) they are literally incapable of feeling empathy and it honestly doesn’t make any sense to expect them to be a certain way because they literally can’t. ^^’
It's not just your parents' theory, since there's a thing called 'hyperempathy', especially in relation to autistic people.
Another great video. We all miss Robin Williams so much. I’m 56 and he’s a part of my childhood as well. Robin was different than most stars. I felt like I knew him. He was a part of my family and it hit me really hard when he died.
Very good job on this analysis. Buffy is such a special and influential show. Thanks for making this! ❤
