    yes you are correct, a few things could lead to a loud fan, we get lots of vw's down here in Florida with fan and AC issues and its hard to remember but I think one of the fan motors on this car was failed so it was an easy one, to diagnose this we would have started with a scan tool (Since VW's don't even have a coolant temp gauge anywhere on the dash to see temp), we would look at past data and trouble codes, we would apply 12 volts directly to the motor (Motor unplugged from vehicle) Then we also would check for power going to the fan all the way at the fan, using the scan tool we could see the engine temp and see when the fan should be coming on, we can verify the signal is being received by the vehicle computers and then the output signal going to turn on the fans or fans, Then as long as the vehicle is doing its job and then the voltage is being sent to the fan, we would have had enough info to say bad fan, this is an assembly so the entire dual fans and motors were replaced. The noise was most likely the single fan running by itself to cool down the rad/condenser and then the bearings slowly falling due to the extra stress, also if one fan fails, then the other is usually not that far behind, same wear and ear factor.

    It would've been nice to hear the car before you began the work. And the sound after the work was finished. With and without the a/c on. Then I would have a better idea of what I need to do.

      True . Wanted to hear if it’s a siren like loud noise like mine

  • @pinoyeh
    @pinoyeh 7 років тому +6

    There could be some other issues why the fans are loud, like the fan relay could be stuck in the ON position, fan resistor could be the problem, the computer could be reading the temperature wrong thus it signals the relay to stay on, and a lot more. If the fan is the problem, the fan should spin slow or does not spin at all. The video did not show how to diagnose where the problem exists, thus, making the fan "NOISY".

      I got that problem where my radiator fan stays on right when I turn the key. So atm I have a kill switch where I can turn on and off the fan. So you think my fan isn’t the problem since it’s running loud?

    Question, does your radiator fan assembly sit flush on the radiator or is there a gap? I had a replacement radiator installed by a shop and it has a gap on the top, not sitting flush.
    I have a slight vibration coming from the radiator fan since then.

    I have to replace just the a/c condenser fan within the existing housing/shroud. I have it removed but I need tovreplace just the fan and motor. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    would the model being a GLI of the same year make a difference in how its disassembled/reassemble? Also would it have a different fan assembly than the base model?

    Is there any way to do this without raising the car?

    • @APDTY
      @APDTY  6 років тому

      most likely yes but you probably have to remove a bunch more stuff and maybe open the AC, its much easier up on a lift, We have not done one of these without a lift so not positive its possible, just assuming

      I just did this with a floor jack and jack stands. Jacked up the front and took the fan out from the bottom, and actually took apart the small fan that wasn't working and fixed it. Then replaced the fan shroud and works great!

      So if the engine is running and teh ac is on, both fans should be running at full speed. These fans have multiple speeds and dual fans. VW's are a little stranger then others but they work about the same, once the thermostat get to the opening temp, it opens and the hot coolant should flow out of the engine and into the radiator, this will cause the temp sensor to notice and kick the radiator fan into a higher gear, the other fan will kick in when you engage the AC as it adds even more heat to the radiator from the hot condenser. Many customers that come into our shop with a VW have one fan fail and don't know it is failed, the check engine light should come on but they may drive awhile and then the 2nd fan cannot keep up so it fails, then you go to the shop and find out both fans are failed and the common question is why did both fans fail at the same time? Well usually they don't, so the quick test is get the engine to operating temperature and then turn on the AC and both fans should be on full speed.

      so you would need to pull diagnostic trouble codes from the vehicle computer to figure out the problems, you can usually go to an auto zone or advance auto parts and they can pull the code for you for free, they cant really diagnose but they can start you in the right direction, if you get the code and not sure what to do, update this question with the code or codes and we can help figure it out

    Hey guy, how are you.
    My AC something its working but something its off..i notice Coolant fan problem inside VCDS diagnoses.. "Control Module 1 for Coolant Fan, P1946". When AC compressor turnoff, because Maximum pressure reach (then turn off to protection).. and before this happen, i can notice that fans starts oscillate, fans stop and starts again where should be in full rotate.. and AC pressure start to increase until turn OFF again. In a normal situation, AC request 55% for fan... But sometimes i could measure request 98% but the fans it´s in oscilate issue.. my problem is on fan module control? tks

    Great explanation! My problem is that the fans are working erratically. Also, when I turn on the AC they don’t kick off…only when they want to! So it’s blowing hot air at idle. I am ordering a new fan assembly. Thanks for this great DIY.
