Darkstalkers is a much more visually interesting fighter than Street Fighter. Especially in arena and character design.

Personally I prefer the martial arts theme of street fighter, but yes Darkstalkers is much more interesting in general.

Ah, that girl. I remember the first time I saw her. I pressed the Heavy Punch button and suddenly machine gun. I pressed the Heavy Kick and suddenly landmines. And each time the dog freaked out. At this point, I was hooked! ...then I saw that "post-traumatic stress disorder over her grandma's death" excuse to kill the enemy and my jaw dropped lol
Her and Donovan are my favorite Darkstalkers because they are so paradoxical (Hindu Dhampir ftw). Donovan lacks personality in his animations, or at least he doesn't have as much as B.B. but seriously, it's hard to flash brighter than Little Red Riding Hood with a basket full of deadly weapons.
She'd perform better as an assassin by hiding in plain sight as a little naive girl and only showing her true colors for the duration of the attack, but the super move makes it look as if she's enjoying the role-play. It's also funny how her wine bottle move was adopted later by both young Joseph Joestar and Elphelt.

I know it's from a scene. But in the scene he shot it horizontally like a hadouken while in the fighting game it's more like BB Hood's special.
Another bonus to BB's design, is that she could represent the deceptiveness of fairy tales. Cute and intriguing on the surface but horrifying underneath. Original fairy tales are rather brutal.
One thing that's not explicit but nice to appreciate is how BB Hood's playstyle reflects her characterization. Usually in interviews when developers talk about new characters they talk about a gameplay niche they need to fill with the new character design. While Darkstalkers especially in the later entries is very rushdown-heavy, BB Hood's is especially intimidating with a variety of approaching tricks and her double jump, feeling very appropriate for giving the impression the other player has been caught in her trap.
I agree. Her attacks look deliberately non-intimidating at first. She has short arms so she looks like she doesn't have range. Her missiles are slow moving. And she doesn't seem like she has a lot of mobility options. But before you know it, your opponent goes "Wait, what the heck just happened?". The overall effect is, oddly enough, it makes her even more intimidating. It's brilliant.

I looked at this picture so confused by the lack of anything dangerous. I was looking for something malicious. I yet I _still_ didn't see the gun sitting in plain sight.

A note that makes it even clearer that she's a villain is the slasher-like ending to her arcade mode. A wolf family hears a report on the news about a killer on the loose, who's shown to be B.B. Hood. They take note of it but don't seem too concerned, either because of their location or to not scare their child. It then cuts to a scene of B.B. Hood on the path to their house, a new take on the slasher staple of the killer standing still just outside the house. I don't fully recall the ending so sorry if my summary is off.
If the horror or villainy of B.B. Hood still isn't clear to the player, they would have had to be paying little attention throughout the playthrough.

It's a shame they never did much with this franchise anymore. It's such a shame seeing BB Hood in the limbo like that.
One the MANY interpretations of the Little Red Riding Hood involves her killing the Wolf with a revolver after killing her grandma... Neat backstory for Bulleta right?
Not once in my life did I expect the regular Little Red Riding Hood to unload rounds into the wolf. I guess that's where they got the idea of "Little Red Riding Hood but she's packing heat."

Capcom should outsource a new Darkstalkers to Arcsys, the are the only ones at this point who would do it any justice
@@joesinister Ehhhhh I disagree. Sure they'd make one that looks good but I'm not sure they would make one that lives up the the extremely high standards VSav has set. In all honesty I don't trust any company with it.

@@joesinister I feel like if Capcom outsourced the project to the KOF13 devs, they'd do a fine job in regards to presentation.
Its also interesting how they played around the design of Red Riding hood. She's a universal icon of "the gullible child" and yet her silhouette is a red triangle, the shape and color language for danger. Using that concept to make BB Hood a master of deception is literally PERFECT.
Never played darkstalkers before but have seen bb hood. I had no idea, she had me fooled! Was wondering what this sweet little girl was doing in a game like this.
The Pixel art in this game is down right perfect, it is stylish, detailed, and artistic.

Sugar would be stuck, every animation and key frames in SG are way too though out and planned. Not to mention the additional references the characters convey in some of their moves and even quotes.
I wonder how long he’ll spend on the fact that you can actually play the trumpet Big Band uses for his standing MP and that the Satchmo Solo is the first few notes of the Skullgirls theme song. It took me forever to notice that he moonwalks for his back walk and he smiles after his assist and I main the big bastard

Gotta say my favorite of the Darkstalkers characters is Q-Bee.
Mechanically, her air dash is pretty much the most unique air dash of any fighting game with air dashes. The fact that she auto-tracks the opponent is super neat. The closest thing I'm aware of that does this is the super dash in DBFZ. The Royal Jelly super is also an incredible tool.
Design wise, she's terrifying. Like Skullgirls, the fan service wears off really quick, showing how she's just a giant insect. Makes her kinda like Eliza in that regard. But seriously, the egg laying move is nasty.
REALLY old comment so I doubt you'll see this but Raven from Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator 2 has a air dash that's actually a glide that auto-tracks your opponent. Same with Merkava from Undernight Inbirth as well.
If you do another Darkstalkers video, I’d suggest having a good look at the transform effects. Some of the ones for Midnight Bliss and even Anakaris’ curse are pretty genius.
I would add the burn, freeze and shock effects.
That's why B.B. Hood is my main: A twisted bloodlust with a splitted personality and great acting skills.
That's why Darkstalkers series is the only Capcom Fighting game that i ever like: Every single charactes has a personality, even Bishamon, Felicia and Lilith

Like in the kim's pants video, i think the entire darkstalkers series deserves to be considered an animation excellence
I noticed that Cody from Street Fighter V also has a somewhat similar duality about him. Not that he prances about in a little dress he can't even fit in obviously, but the fact that as the mayor of Metro City, he's now gotta keep up appearances as a man of high social upbringing. As the fight escalates though and he takes one punch too many (reaches v-trigger state, in other words), the next thing his opponent knows, he's whipped out a lead pipe from seemingly out of nowhere and just hammers them mercilessly into the pavement with it, taking a laid back giddiness about having just hospitalized someone for about 7 months. Same goes for that combat knife he has no compunction about plunging into someone's kidney and playing it off like they fell on it or something. Once the fight rages out of control, he's done with keeping up pretenses for the paparazzi and is just out to cripple someone.
Excellent video, I'll just add that while all the other characters in Darkstalkers series have frames of animation that morphs limbs and other body parts into different objects or mutations to make their attacks, Bulleta -being a human- is the only one that has "morphs" through her expressions. I guess Donovan also only "morphs" through his special attacks like the Flame, Lightning and Ice swords, , not fully changing the aspect of his body, but I should check his frames again.
Bulleta sure is a great and deep character design.
There days Im really afraid in what capcom would do with a new game...Thare are great chances that the animation would be weak.
Watching your videos about Bob and B.B. Hood made me realize I have a tendency to pick fighting game characters that don't play out the way you expect based on how they just look.
Not mentioned in this great video. Her light kick is a sneeze lol. Creating this character for Mugen was very hard. She has too many “Helper” sprites that requires their own programming. The Dog even defecate on certain actions
When my friend and I played mvc2, at one point I chose bb hood and thought to myself why is she in here, then I used her attacks and started laughing so hard.

I hope you do more of these episodes about the Darkstalkers, many of them have extremly unique animations that help build up who they are, from Victor childish moves and muscle reorganization, to Jedah gorefest moveset and calm behaviour and my favorite Lord Raptor bizzare and metal moves

In my previous job there was an emulator we could play on during lunch breaks. I used to play Darkstalkers, which no one knew about. But when I chose BB Hood my coworkers would say stuff like “did little red riding hood just pull a machine gun?”. It’s incredible how much this character can grab the attention of someone with no context. Definitely one of the best character designs ever made.
Imagine if the little girl in Bloodborne's sidequest was B.B. Hood.

I'm glad you gave Darkstalkers a spotlight, everything about the series is excellent. Honestly, these games were one of the reasons I decided to pursue animation professionally. To this day I still go back and analyze the spritesheets and admire them.
Roald Dahl invented Little Red Riding Hood being dangerous killer. Both Big Bad Wolf (twice) and Third Little Pig suffered her skill of marksmanship.
Oh, how I miss Darkstalkers. It's one of my absolute favorite IPs, even if it's seen basically no love for years. I was always best with Morrigan (I do best with light, fast characters), but I still love Hsien-ko the most. B.B. Hood is a wonderfully designed character, though.

Undertale’s entire “LOVE” mechanic is probably based on BB Hood; monsters can be harmed through sheer malicious intent along with weapons no matter how tough they otherwise appear to be.

1997 Capcom had a thing for red-dressed girls who seem sweet but are secretly off their rocker in some form. Heck, Hood and Iris almost seem like foils to one another.
Definitely one of my favorite fighting game characters. Momo from Rival Schools and Alisa Bosconovitch from Tekken are similar but don't go as far as BB Hood in being deceptively evil

I really hope you are going to do more Darkstalkers videos. It's a masterclass of animation and its one of my favorite series of all time.
I've started looking at Darkstalkers stuff since that one Capcom collection was announced, I've admittedly never been huge into fighting games, but Darkstalkers does seem like it has a lot of cool concepts.

They turned a somber yet insane Demon God that dresses like a Priest X Gakuran and uses his flesh as a sort of malleable goop of blood and knives for a weapon and is actively bleeding throughout the entire match into a generic anime villain who's wearing indiscriminate purple clothing COVERED IN GOLD FOR SOME REASON and the open wounds on his body turned into... weird looping red textures. There is no self mutilation, and his "blood" is FUCKING PURPLE.
And you say it's not that bad??

And if you're gonna change everything that made him interesting including his self harm why even keep the "red" parts on his jacket, just to rub salt in the wound? Why attach his wings to his body to make him just another generic demon? His redesign is even worse than fucking Donte.

I just wanted to let you know that the link no longer works. Shame, your video was so interesting that I wanted to immediately read the article. Capcom outdid themselves with Darkstalkers. Your analysis of B.B. Hood reminds me of a movie, The Prestige. In the movie, the Christian Bale tells Hugh Jackman that the Chinese magician is so good because he dedicates his entire life to his trick. Even after the magician left the stage, he is still performing an illusion. Even in combat, B.B. Hood maintains her illusion.
I also like her facial expressions on the ground & get up on that dash

This has nothing to do with it, but could you please do a breakdown of Soucalibur 6 animation? Your vídeos pretty much ruined Injustice 2 for me (in a good way, since I've always felt something off playing it, and then figured that it was those sloppy animations), so might Azwell make a game I love even more great to look at. Seems like a fair trade for me

So I've read the site you shared about those 12 principles in animation, one of them was stages in darkstalkers where he said stages should be contrast with the sprites, not clashing with the sprites and having them works as a frame for the fighting and have me thinking:
have you considered commenting stages in Blazblue? Especially in CF since you also talk about the series lately.
As someone who have been playing the series for 6 years I just find them lacking (starting from CP to CF, CT and CS original stages are fine), either viewing it from the connection to the story or the decision in placing things down or somethings that were happening in the stages.
It just feels like the stages design division got told by the director to just 'create the stage whatever you like, you don't have to worry if it makes no sense' and them having no connection to the other divisions.
