Rohan Richardson Hey I wanted to buy one but I'm kind of concerned about the reliability. Do you have any advice. If your Australian than you probably know more than my sorry American ass.
Another good video, thanks. I started to watch thinking it was a TD5.. Never mind. Your story of breaking down at the most inconvenient place is so LandRover. We just did 22,000k all over West Aus /NT ( inspired by your video's) and the highlight - & most expensive was a flight & boat trip to the horizontal Falls. Flight was 8.00 Am-15 mins to airport,we left at 7.30 & she popped a turbo hose just as we drove out of the caravan park !! Not hauling the van up hills thru the Flinders not the week or even day before, nope, right then.. Gotta love em ( we made the flight).
Love Doug's How-To videos (Atlantic British)! Only issue is I have a Td5 (diesel) and I don't think you have any in the States - still quite a lot of similarities though with V8 and Td5.
Getting ready to do my first oil change on my 2004 Land Rover discovery SE seven, and I'm glad I found this video because I have never heard of not taking the oil filter off right away. I'm just getting ready to start it now, so hope everything goes well. By the way, I have been using synthetic oil in my vehicle, and never heard that you might not want to. Great video, though. Thanks so much for the tip again about not taking the filter out right away.
Greetings David, thanks for the comments. I encountered the oil filter tip again in the user manual just the other day so it is valid. Definitely couldn't find anything further to support my sources claim to only use mineral oil. One of my spark plugs in that video had been put in cross threaded which was awesome fun to try and fix. The joys of getting a second hand vehicle can be mixed. Hope the service goes well. Cheers.
Hi there Mr. Foreman, I'm sure you have gathered by now but just in case you haven't the American LR Discovery is the most notoriously unreliable vehicle on planet earth! We don't have the diesel options that the rest of the world does so not only is it horrendously unreliable but its also a very thirsty creature. Happy travels in the U.S. and keep posting your awesome adventures!
Greetings Justin, I would love to argue back in defense of the D2 but evidence so far greatly supports your views and I are unable to disagree with your claim. It no doubt will provide some good adventure content if it actually makes it off 1st base. Cheers for the comments.
Greetings Mark. I do wish you were joking. However, after a lot of pain and money we are hoping now to turn many minutes into at least a few hours. Cheers.
Hey there Tasman. Talents is a very strong word for the attributes I possess with my mechanical skills nigh on par with my cooking ability. Some have labelled me a passion fingers.
Land Rover toolbox and Atlantic British have some good videos on UA-cam and the book we used in the video has a few good tips. They’re quite capable trucks, we’ve got a couple of videos called the Mojave road using the disco and it did well on some rough terrain.
I like your presentation! I just got an 01’ discovery 2 SE for $2k, & I’m just now starting to work on it because I’m sure the guy completely lied to me about everything he allegedly had done to it! I like to try to research things thoroughly before I work on them & cross reference said research, because there’s tons of misinformation out there! That’s why research often takes more time than actually working on said vehicle (as does digging around for the right tools)! Anyway, I thought your video was pretty funny!
Greetings Knute. I did reply to your comment days ago but either our internet or the newish UA-cam layout refused to allow it. Glad you liked the video and best of luck on your new purchase, these Disco's take a bit of work to get up to scratch but once they are they are magnificent. Never thought I'd own a disco over a defender but here in the States my hand was forced and it was a pleasant surprise.
I have an '04 Disco 2 with about 151k on it, and I use Castrol High Mileage 10w-30 Advanced Full Synthetic. The engine takes between 6 and 7 quarts of oil so this guy is right. Fill up with the first 5, and let it settle measuring the whole way until full. I usually end up with around 6.3 or 6.4 quarts in at just below the full line. It's also easier to change the oil if the engine has been off for a bit as most of it will be in the sump. As far as filter goes, I use the K&N(HP-2004) with end bolt. For the air filter I use either a Denso($23) or K&N($45).
Mr. Foreman, in the States we use Toyota with the best engine being the 2.4 liter. 20 mpg. 15g tank. Either 4 runner or pickup. Parts are everywhere and cheaper than Land Rover. I run a high density three row radiator to keep the engine cool in Death Valley. I run 5-20 weight oil. I get 10 percent better mpg verses 10-40. I have a manual trans. 4 wd. Never been suck in the sand. Only repair in 100,000 miles was an igniter localed on top of the coil. Fortunately I had an extra one. The fuel pump can be accessed under the back seat. I have 225,000 on the engine. Some go for 300,000. I like to buy the Toyotas before 1996 since they will run with all the sensors shorted out. Good luck Mate. Try Saline valley some time............the most primitive part of California and full of old mines.
Greetings there Mike. Those Toyotas are in my opinion the best. Especially the Land Cruisers. I originally went Land Rover for their distinctive look and the fact nobody at the time wanted them so they were much cheaper than their Japanese competition. Now however they've become very popular. I did notice here in California there are a lot of them but up north around Yellowstone area I barely saw any at all. I do like the manual transmissions although stuck in huge traffic jams is when the auto sells itself.
Great video Mr Foreman (hello from Australia!). Just out of interest, what's that book you're using? Probably doesn't cover the Td5, but still interested. I use the RAVE manual on my hard drive, but wouldn't mind a more detailed How-To book (sometimes little tips help so much). Cheers!
Greetings Mr Intestinal Worm, the book is a maintenance and upgrade manual from Ralph Hosier. It isn't a stand alone book but does have numerous handy hints and information that can help. There is a haynes manual for the Disco 2 with a TD5, I've a V8 in my disco but the Defender back in the homeland has a TD5 so I got that. Might be able to find a copy on ebay or something.
Greetings Rob, I think the later discovery snare less prone to the 3 amigo's. I am yet to experience such joy in our one but I'm sure it's coming. 2nd hand discos are cheap in the states with good ones between $3500 and $6500 USD unlike the defenders which are like rare jewels and that is reflected in their prices. I've seen them for $70000 and above.
I think so. Not into California, there's too many emissions laws. They seem to like their environment stuff. Texas or Florida would be the go. The Americans have a lot of truck envy for us, especially the Toyota Land Cruiser and the defender.
just changed coils, valve cover gaskets, manifold gasket.and so on and so on...did you really get all the plugs out? i had to use a swivel head socket to get them especially number 7...and the vacuum lines were out of the way... anyhew, you if you ever have to do the coils you will want to strangle the engineer who put them behind the manifold. hand held mirrors and swear words all day. thanx for the vid, oil change tomor.
I did manage to get all the plugs out and it is an exercise of patience and contortions. One was cross threaded which made me overjoyed. There's nothing like a cross threaded spark plug to make your day. I not long ago changed the rocker cover gaskets and soon I'm going deeper to try changing the head gaskets so I saw where the coil was. I agree that it's placement is interesting, getting to that is no easy feat. Best of luck on the service, mines due for another. They come around quick.
"contortions"...lol, yup, that about sums it up! love my Rove,r though she is a bit needy. hope yours does you proud and thanks you for the t.l.c. you show her.
Greetings there. The book I was using recommended that oil weight for engines with high Mileage so if your truck has done some traveling I trust it to be a good choice.
My info was specifically for a high mileage v8 engine and if that is what you have i’d Say 133k is getting there but if it’s not burning oil or misbehaving then stick to the regular stuff. For more qualified advice I’d take it to the professionals, pay for an oil change and use that as an opportunity to ask questions and get second opinion recommendations. It’s not too expensive and a good additional resource.
Greetings there. Apologies for the late reply as I was digging deeper into your question. A source I regarded as reputable advised me on using non synthetic oil but I've found no other evidence to say that synthetic oil would be bad. So from that I would say there should be no issue. Cheers.
Foreman and Wilms Adventures, I have a 200 for discovery SE7 with only 100,000 miles, which I bought 13 months ago, and he has always use synthetic oil, so I have also. But thanks for the tip on not taking the filter off right away. I never had heard about that before.
Greetings Adam. They do indeed have hiluxes though they call them tacomas here. I figured life would be far too easy with a reliable Toyota and decided to punish myself for any foreseeable sin by going with a Landrover. And punished I have been...
Greetings there Hawks. Toyotas are reliable and awesome and make life far too easy. Where would all the good stories be if one wasn't stuck in the middle of the wilds lamenting their choice in vehicle? Cheers.
+Foreman and Wilms Adventures ...... that's very true. Must keep the entertainment value high...enjoy the adventure and we all look forward to seeing them unfold...
Started watching for the information, stayed for the entertainment
Gotta love aussie humour, from an aussie disco 2 owner(yes it's a v8).
Rohan Richardson Hey I wanted to buy one but I'm kind of concerned about the reliability. Do you have any advice. If your Australian than you probably know more than my sorry American ass.
You’re a legend mr foreman.
Mines a diesel but watched the whole vid for the lols.
Thx 👍🦄

Thoroughly entertaining. Thank you guys again for posting this great content!
Greetings eviluncle. Your always welcome.
Second the sentiments on Atlantic British. They're a great company, always very helpful.
Love Doug's How-To videos (Atlantic British)! Only issue is I have a Td5 (diesel) and I don't think you have any in the States - still quite a lot of similarities though with V8 and Td5.
Kudos on the new rig! Welcome to the US, I hope y'all have some great adventures.
Thanks Texas. Cheers.

Please do more videos on the disco 2! would love to see more of it!

nice work mate !
Thanks. It almost looked like I had a clue what I was doing.
Phew ! it's not just me in the UK that works to this sort of dizzy high standards.... educational and amusing well done
Thanks Paul.
mate love the new shirt I guise u had to dress up over there in your new found land looking forwards to more of you guyz videos from abroad .
Congratulations on the new vehicle, I'm sure you'll have many minutes of trouble free motoring.
Greetings Mark. I do wish you were joking. However, after a lot of pain and money we are hoping now to turn many minutes into at least a few hours. Cheers.
Do I laugh or cry Guys?
There seem s to be no end to your talents Mr Foreman.
Hey there Tasman. Talents is a very strong word for the attributes I possess with my mechanical skills nigh on par with my cooking ability. Some have labelled me a passion fingers.
***** Just make sure the engine isn't making that humming sound when you work on it !!! LOL
Great video! Thinking of getting an old Disco 2, so doing some research on all the maintenance I'm in for...
Land Rover toolbox and Atlantic British have some good videos on UA-cam and the book we used in the video has a few good tips. They’re quite capable trucks, we’ve got a couple of videos called the Mojave road using the disco and it did well on some rough terrain.
Dan Zehner once you know it well it’s very easy to work on a shop manual always helps too

We use 20/50 in our Cruisers ,good job.

Did you manage to change the leads?
Twice I have had mice make a nest in the air filter box. Usually presents as decreased gas milage.
had mouse house in mine too!

Just got my 2004. 👍🏻
They can be a bit of work but they're awesome trucks.
Righty tighty, lefty loosy - legend.
What sort of prices do these D2's sell in the US compared to here in Aus ??
Greetings Rob, I think the later discovery snare less prone to the 3 amigo's. Geez.... maybe I should export my old Tdi Defender to the States to sell it... I might be able to retire early :)
I think so. Not into California, there's too many emissions laws. They seem to like their environment stuff. Texas or Florida would be the go. The Americans have a lot of truck envy for us, especially the Toyota Land Cruiser and the defender.

Is 20w-50 good oil weight to use?
Greetings there. The book I was using recommended that oil weight for engines with high Mileage so if your truck has done some traveling I trust it to be a good choice.
Foreman and Wilms Adventures I have about 133k miles . I drive it a lot daily, planning to cross states also .

Hahahaha. I love it.
you are using synthetic blend oil ? you suggested mineral oil not synthetic - LOL
All the evidence is stacked against me and I have no retort. I buggered that one up didn’t I.
FMD Gav - don't they have Hiluxes over there!
Greetings Adam. They do indeed have hiluxes though they call them tacomas here. I figured life would be far too easy with a reliable Toyota and decided to punish myself for any foreseeable sin by going with a Landrover. And punished I have been...
Being the later D2a model, does it still have the 3 Amigos problem like the earlier D2's ?
Bugger....lol
Should have bought a Toyota.... ;-)
