Brings back memories for me. Same engine 1.3 valencia unit, same shade of Rosso Red but my Escort was a popular version with a 4 speed gearbox and it was a 3 door. Sadly was scrapped as the rust got too bad and the head gasket blew. How I miss Eddie the Escort E541PLJ

I'd never even heard of the Perodua until I came across this video, quite by accident may I mention. Thank you!!

MK4 that's pretty cool hypes, you should drive it more! Sorry but I'm adding it to the list! Haha, the Kelisa reminds me of my old VW UP with its wind up windows and 0-60 in around 5 days. Loved that car though.

Same with me. I've had my mk4 1.3 Popular 3 door for 13 years. I've seen your car in Great Yarmouth. Looks great.

This content is worth the main channel.
By the way, the interior is kinda similar to a Fiat Uno, especially the glovebox. Maybe it's just me, but I think it's sharing some parts with the Fiat.

Good luck with the resto! I got this Escort in 2008 and it was mint then. 13 years and outside weather takes its toll. Would love an RS turbo one day :-)

Very true :-( I hope it doesn't get to bad. I would store away again but a couple of other cars have taken priority, completely rust free from the 80s.

Hi mate don't know if you'll see this but hoping you can give me advice,
Looking at a first car and I'm dead set on a Mk4 escort, loved the RS Turbos ever since I was a kid and would be a dream to own a little 1.3 like yours, it's stunning. Have you got any tips or tricks or stuff that you'd recommend keeping an eye out for when looking at one? Rust is the obvious catch but is there anything specific I should be looking for? Learned to drive in a 1968 Morris Minor so can't wait to go back to the future with a space age 80s car 🤣.
    Appreciate the help, thank you

    • @HypaGames

Thanks for comment! Yeah I've always liked the RS Turbos myself, never had one, maybe one day! To be honest I've had this car since 2008 and got it with 19,000 miles. Can honestly say it has never given me any trouble, never broken down etc, always started. So I either got really lucky or they just keep going. As you say rust is main issue apart from that the 1.3 doesn't really have anything to go wrong on it. Mine has the OHV engine which is apparently the one that is most reliable and based off a 1960s design so I hear. But all I've had go on it was the fan switch (nothing major as all), I put a new alternator on (not the cars fault someone put jumps leads on wrong way when I had a flat battery!!! lucky it wasn't a modern car which would of fried all electrics). New springs and shocks, also really easy parts cheap etc. One thing I will say it's quite hard finding an exhaust system for these now so you may have to go custom unless you can find somewhere. I did also put a slightly uprated clutch on as found when the original went a cheap aftermarket one feels like a sponge so the uprated one actually makes a really nice gear change and should out live the engine. Apart from that can't really think of anything, long as it has been looked after and not much rust drive and enjoy, I've done 100+ miles journeys many a time, had it as a daily driver for years, there's just not much power! Also I'd highly recommend a 5 speed if you can, some are 4 speed. Also as if you learned in a Minor haha my brother bought one and I could just not get the hang of driving it! Kept missing 3rd gear and it kept stalling, I guess I was just no used to it. But Escort very easy to drive, just no power steering when parking but no issue with standard wheels light enough actually. Post a vid if you get one :-) Cheers!

@@HypaGames Haha thank you mate for replying, really appreciate all you've said. Mirros a lot of what I've heard about them, that they're fun to drive and reliable. Not to mention good looking! I suppose it's a good thing now that although a lot are owned and sold by enthusiasts (driving the prices up) it means that generally you don't get sold lemons as often.. people keeping 30+ year old cars tend to know to take good care of them. I'm not fussed at all about the lack of power, means my insurance will be cheaper 🤣
I'll look for a 5 speed then if I can aye, I'd go for a three door if poss but I know they're rare nowadays. Learning in the Minor was quality, definitely taught me the ins and outs of driving before I stepped foot in anything modern, no syncros from 1st to 2nd so was a right grindfest when I first started out.. loved it though, still drive it when I'm home if I can.
One last question if you don't mind, with all the petrol prices and that at the moment.. if I bought one I'd almost defo daily it, what's the MPG like? Hoping if I drive semi-carefully I might not end up broke.. lol. That reminds me too, do you use any additives fuel wise? I know the new E10 stuff they use isn't really designed for cars rated for 4 star back in the day so I don't want to end up destroying the fuel system.
      Cheers again!

No worries and yes agree prices have climbed a bit, I got lucky with mine was in 2008, immaculate car for £850 but as you say a lot can fall into the wrong hands etc. The ones that are here you'd would like to think they've been looked after, deff more enthusiasts now. Ahh yes 3 door is more desirable. Is cool that you learnt in the Minor though as I say I only took it up the road and yes kept grinding gears, quite badly actually and it wasn't my car so thought I best go back home quickly! It was sold to en enthusiast, was my brothers Minor for about a month as it was a good buy. Maybe I'll get a car from the 50s or 60s one day I've yet to go past 1982 myself haha. Also to be honest it depends how you drive it, it will sip fuel if you're just tapping throttle and keeping revs low, easily get 300+ miles on a standard 48L tank, the wheels I put on mine deff lowered the fuel economy!! So you might want to bear that in mind, the original steel wheels returned much better MPG. Also now and then I've put some redex in and really odd you notice it revs more quietly and does give a little more MPG (so not just snake oil as they say) but only now and then after a service I do that. Apart from that I've always ran it on E5 without any issues whatsoever for 50,000+ miles. I'd never dare put E10 in, nasty stuff. Oil changes I've done every 5,000 using 5W 30 without issues (better oil than was around back in the day). Plugs etc you really notice the difference when it has new ones, so yeah just basic servicing and she should never let you down from my experience. Cheers.

Is the Escort still on it's original exhaust? Back in the day i saw loads that sounded really raspy after new exhausts.
