Both sound amazing however IMHO the Silver Sonic edges out the 1a model, hope I got that right. I had the opportunity to check out a Silver Sonic from 1963 and compare it to a Conn NWII Transitional with the Art Deco Sun Goddess engraving, a 1936 Selmer Balanced Action & a 1957 MKVI. I was blown away by the core of the Super Sonic! These horns are amazing. All of the horns I checked out in this collection were museum quality and that's a point in itself, condition is everything, the setup is critical. At one point you can hear Tyler run his fingers down the super sonic, go back and check it out!! Crisp, tight action. Wow please post more A / B comparisons like this!! Thank you
Wow! You sound great on both instruments! The brass bell horn has a tad brighter sound to my ear, and maybe a bit more spread. The Silversonic is a bit uniform and the core is just a bit more focused. It would be interesting to do some samples with necks swapped, or either neck on both instruments. The differences are small enough that maybe it is the manufacturing tolerances, rather than the materials that are causing the differences.
My God, the tone and warmth!!! Love them both. The Silversonic sounds a little cleaner... crisper, not exactly brighter, if that makes any sense. I'm in love with the King Zephyr tenors, particularly the specials from the 40's I'm hoping to get one this year!
To my ears the SS has just a bit more Conn-like grip at the edge of the tone. Both are great horns. As the owner of a Zephyr Special I got from you guys, any chance of a side by side with a ZS and one of these? Love to hear that...
Gorgeous playing. They are very close. To me, on average the SS is just a bit creamier and the S20 has just a bit of sizzle. Same voice otherwise. And the difference is only the bell? Kind of hard to imagine that coming from the bell. I'm not sure this degree of difference couldn't come from production variations in the necks... Wish I hadn't sold mine though:)
Both sound great in your hands. Gorgeous playing
Great playing! Both are amazing sounding, but the silversonic is just delicious - the mouthpiece must also be contributing a lot.
Absolutely gorgeous, the horns, the playing. The silversonic seems to be a tad bit brighter, cleaner yes. However, I'd prefer the Super 20.
I know what you mean. It's like listening to a vinyl record versus a cd. There's an almost tactile quality to the sound!
I know what you mean!!! Wish I still had my Silver Sonic from 1972.
I'm always impressed by Tylers playing no matter what horn/mpc he's using.
This is really kind. Thank you!!
Nice. I have 3 King Super 20 silversonic tenors and love em all!!! Thick fat sound!! GREAT PLAYING BTW!
Thanks!

Yeah, definitely a brand of horns that should get more attention. When they are set up well they truly are special!

That's a really great idea, the neck can definitely make a difference, more than most would think.

I love this observation! In general, I'm a big fan of describing the edge of the tone.

I'm inclined to agree! It's a super subtle difference.
The S20, no the SS, no the S20, no the SS....
