The first 5 minutes of this are some of my favorite Snob content. It's funny, it's educational, and it's showing how the Snob has evolved as a concept, rather than being stuck in the "I SHOUT AT BAD MOVIES" camp. Which can still be funny, but I think Snob's staying power is his evolution toward actual film snobbery and light education.
Brad, I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say, thank you for bringing your videos back to youtube after "League Of Super Critics" sputtered out. Though it is a shame that you still can't use "Greatest American Hero" as your opening theme
Argento actually wanted the film to be a horror fairy tale--starring children. Thank God cooler heads prevailed. The color palette was the result of Argento's desire to have the film resemble "Snow White"--also note that the door handles are almost shoulder level, making the characters appear smaller.
You can definitely compare the styles; both loved atmosphere and using the setting as almost another character. They both are directors that fall under the "Auteur" label--not a term I like to use, but one that fits both of them.
"Suspiria" is truly a great horror film. Really scares the breath out of me. The "Cinema Snob" did a fine job making fun of it, yet still acknowledging it as a great movie... A good score is a big contributor to making a scary movie actually scary, and this music score is fucking amazing! I never knew Udo Kier was in "Suspiria" until this episode. A good friend of mine, who is a fan of Dario Argento, believes you can never have enough "Goblin" music or Udo Kier... and he's fucking right! The biggest difference between Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci, is Argento knew how to make a film with good direction, good cinematography, interesting characters, & well done build up for the scare scenes. Fulci definitely made some scary films, but mostly they were just based around the gore. The final scene in this episode between the "Cinema Snob" and "Neil Hall" always had an uncomfortable feel to it. Its even more uncomfortable now, knowing that this was the last time Jake Norvell worked with Brad Jones, and knowing everything that happened behind the scenes... In the end, a terrific review!
To answer the seeing eye dog death scene though. I felt that despite liking Suspiria more than the Beyond, I felt the Beyond had the better death scene. It had more buildup and it felt scarier in a claustrophobic area
I was in Athens earlier this year and went for a walk in the morning to kill time before heading to the airport for my flight to Santorini. I passed by a club that was advertising a performance by Goblin that night. I almost cancelled my plans. I should have.

TRIVIA: The scenes from 5:52, 5:58, 15:51, 15:56, and 17:27 were featured in the backing tape/music video for Canadian industrial band Skinny Puppy's single, Worlock from the 1989 album, Rabies. The Worlock video also contains clips from Bad Taste, Luther the Geek, Altered States, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Hellraiser II, Tenebrae, Dune, Eraserhead, Opera, Phantasm II, and many other horror films, mostly films directed by Dario Argento. Here's the Wikipedia article regarding the song: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worlock
Love this reference in 6:15 , considering Suspiria is getting remade at the time of this comment! Also the "sweet strawberry jam-like" letters for the titles were actually put in the film when it was released in the US (which looked like the "breathing letters" that appeared in the US trailer).
An incredible movie; a real triumph of style over substance. The recent "Gretel and Hansel" movie definitely steals some of its look and style from this film; but other than that, can think of no film with the fever-dream quality of Suspiria. "Show, don't tell" is such a cliche, but this film's atmosphere, set design, and cinematography outshine almost any modern attempt at "Horror." The Gore is there, and is even over the top at times, but it takes second fiddle to the incredible feel, the mise-en-scene that creates an atmosphere unmatched in any other horror film.
"Belive it or not, ammm walking on hair. I neva thought I could be free-ee. Tanananan outta pray of here. Gow could this be? Belive or not it's juste meeee..."

My Own Private Idaho could have had a much higher rating on Rotten Tomatoes had Hans explained the film's final act to Mike in their first scene together. Then, they could have actually been friends!
I hope one day the Snob will get around to the two sequel films to this, Inferno and The Mother of Tears. They aren't quite as great as the original but they're still interesting to watch.
He must have raised the pitch or made the intro faster because the music is in a higher key, and also I think the guys voice at the beginning was deeper but I don't remember that entirely.
So does Brad have to edit out Believe it or Not for all of his videos now or something? If so, shit. He needs to find a site better then youtube that is not going to shaft him. That song is iconic of the series.
I've been looking for the version of the Suspiria theme that was used in this video for a long time... does anybody know where I can find it? I actually always liked this version more than the "original" version or whatever. It's almost impossible to find, yet this is the version I actually remember most when I first saw it.
Memories & thoughts (I'm older than y'all) : Summer 1977 . STAR WARS , nothing but Star Wars. Orca the Killer Whale and .. Suspiria ! The commercial / TV trailer for Suspiria would come on around 11 PM or so and it was the SCARIEST commercial EVER! (watch it on here ; UA-cam). Like I had said ; STAR WARS buried every other movie that came out that summer. Suspiria did not stand a chance. I did not see it till "home video" era 1984 or so. So yeah: if you were a KID or a TEEN in the Summer of 1977 ; and that Suspiria commercial would pop up on a commercial break during The Honeymooners: NO SLEEP that night! (Good thing there was NO school the next day !) .
i never understood the rotten meat part of this movie. was it really just rotted meat sent or did it on purpose and this time they forgot and the maggots got found out? i also hate how we don't know why they're messing with the girls in the school, are they doing it to stay young or what? besides those 2 things this movie is so fucking perfect. it's one of my all time favorites. i LOVE the score, when i first heard it i knew the movie must be about witches (before they told us it was witches, fyi i didn't know it was about witches before hand just that the school hid a secret) because it just sounded so folkish and mystical ya know? i love all of it. hope the remake does it justice and doesn't just ruin it.....
While the story is mostly considered surrealist in this film, some of this things can be explained: mostly all of the victims were either "dissidents" from the school or students who "knew too much" about their secret (like Pat and Sara), or in some way offended the witches (like Daniel, the blind pianist whose German Shepherd bitten the creepy kid). As about the maggots and the rotten food, it seemed to be just a random incident that just happened, but served as a way to lead the protagonist with the evil witch; but, then again, it's a film with a surrealist appeal!
I think they are a legitimate dance school; their goal is to make money. They just kill trouble-makers. Also, I always felt like the maggots were the result of their magic fucking with nature, but I'm not claiming the movie actually backs me up on that.
The beginning of Inferno says the ground these houses are built will basically be sick and poisoned land or something like that. So maybe that’s why the meat rotted.
Yeah, Jessica Harper was Janet in "Shock Treatment", even the Snob makes a reference to that! And Dario Argento was Bava's Pupil, it's obvious he gets an influence by him, I think "Suspiria" channels much of Bava's colorful work.

It's also ranked on multiple retrospective lists as an undeniable masterpiece to even featuring on Bravo’s ‘The 100 Scariest Movie Moments’ ranked at the extremely impressive number 24 spot
It's got great concepts too; The fear of age and with it inevitable end, the pressures of harnessing untapped potential, the daunting struggles of the ever-changing human body and the haunting concept of an innocence entirely lost
These are all mental obstacles we face throughout our lives at one stage or another
At its core lies the terrifying progression from adolescence into adulthood but portrayed through the eyes of the very manifestation of evil unrelenting in its attempt to prevent all these concepts from destroying the soul and the human vessels we inhabit
