I have an old VHS recording, prerecorded VHS, DVD, DVD steelbook with musical score, Blu Ray, Blu Ray Steelbook and two different 4K digital versions. You could say that since the first time I saw this I’ve been hooked. I even saw it at the cinema during a limited re-release, 1am on a rainy Tuesday some years ago. This masterpiece isn’t just a horror with no on-screen deaths but, for the outsider, a snapshot of how isolated British villages can appear. Near perfect in its telling, for me this is the greatest movie ever made

I always find it fascinating how certain films can grab ahold of a person like this . For me, The Shinning is one of those films .

@@theemporiumofdread3789 another excellent film, start to finish perfection. With the Wicker Man, the sheer escalating terror that peaks with the final frames….. wow

I remember watching it for the first time and realizing what's about to happen...Definitely terrifying. It's always made me question things when I go to someplace new. I'm like what kind of weird shit goes on around here..lol

@@theemporiumofdread3789 I’m British, and with work I’ve travelled all over the country. I ended up in a small Yorkshire village with a tiny pub at its centre (picture the Slaughtered Lamb). I walked in wearing a suit, everyone turned to look at me with blank expressions. I was served, I was watched, I left quickly. That was an innocent encounter, imagine how an American in the same situation would feel?

I keep saying this so that people have a sense of context. I've only recently started to enjoy what I would call pure horror, the horror things that I liked tended to be sci-fi and that is what I saw them as. I missed seeing this at the cinema last year because I wasn't paying close enough attention to the schedule. I did however catch The Exorcist which is now one of my favourite movies of all time. Although I do now own this, having picked it up from the charity shop I haven't watched it because I watch too much stuff on UA-cam.
The setting has a sense of familiarity to me on all levels. I come from a small island community, although a friendly community it can also be very protective or traditions and hold incomers at arms length. There is a mix of Scottish and Scandinavian culture, although not done now I have seen pictures of people doing the sword dancing, including my father when he was much younger. We celebrate our Scandinavian heritage by burning boats. There are no effigies in the boat in the same way that we burn a 'Guy' on Bonfire night so that's not an element. But put the two together...

The Wicker Man is the gold standard of a horror movie where the horror is hiding in plain sight.
The TV miniseries Dark Secret of Harvest Home comes close to the storyline and impact of The Wicker Man, in both cases the outsider is puzzled by the customs of their environment not realizing the danger they are in until too late.

I'm going to have to check that miniseries out. I don't believe I've seen it.

I've recently watched The King Tide and Starvearce.....I'm sure you've watched em both but I liked the shit out of both.
I think Wicker Man and Midsommar are TRUE folk horror...pagan old beliefs
whereas blood on Satan's claw or any Satanic ones are a lesser strain.
