I think you've done the right thing mate, not rushing to buy trees you don't feel confident with yet.
For the first 2 years i was playing around with stuff around that $3.50 size, just young sticks really and had the time of my life knowing that if they died i wouldn't lose massive amounts of money. Arguably it was the time i enjoyed bonsai the most actually and felt the most excited about it. A decade on and I'm confident with the big old trees now, even though it can be stressful given some of the values, but honestly there's nothing like the joy of beginning and trying out new stuff. I do however find that the larger trees tend to be much easier to care for than the smaller ones just not drying out as fast, so there is a benefit to the bigger trees in that way.
Never be afraid or worried about leaving a nursery without buying either. Each visit to each nursery is good for learning what you're looking for, and as you say the right trees do tend to 'stand out'.
I'm a big lover of Ginkgo as bonsai and advocate for people growing them. Here in Australia they are severely underappreciated. They take an absolute age to thicken trunk size, so it is one species i do advocate buying for size over shape. Also any wounds you make from pruning will never heal over, or at least more slowly than any other species i've ever worked with. I've one i trunk chopped back and the wound is only really starting to callus now about 7 years after i made the cut, so try to avoid a tree that needs a big section removed off it.
    Keep having fun with bonsai!

A lovely view of some fantastic trees, thankyou 💚 very expensive though hey!
I have a bit of feed back id like to give, the monologue at the end, even though you raised some good, reflective points for all of us to reflect on, felt too long and slow which can cause the attention of the watcher to wane. It would be better to keep them shorter and sharper highlighting the main points. To reflect on one thing you said though, at the begining you were highly energised arriving at this fantastic place, full of promising intention to surely come away with a great tree, but after trudging around in the rain for hours and coming away with nothing, i know is deflaiting. Its all part of the journey hey 🙂 on the other hand, It can be too easy to buy material that after when we come home and our over enthusiasm calms down, we feel, perhaps we shouldnt have bought that tree, its not right for me just now. Its good to be decerning as you were, you knew what you were looking for, for where you are on your bonsai journey.
I hope this is well received, all the best to you🙏

@gromageindustries6745 great feedback thank you. I'm always torn between hitting record and talking as I think, or preparing what I want to say which as you point out would flow quicker. I think there's a time for both but you're right, in today's world of media people move from one video to the next very quickly!

Great to see you down my neck of the woods Scott. Greenwoods is a fantastic nursery and I hope you enjoyed your time there mate.
Seeing trees of that scale and maturity can certainly be a bit overwhelming but try to embrace that feeling and use it to help you with your own trees. Nursery trees like these are excellent but once you see trees in a show then that really opens your eyes. I'm not sure if you made it to bonsai live in Telford this weekend but it could be worth visiting a show when you can.
It was a very enjoyable video and I loved seeing everything in it's autumn colours. I was there about a month ago as you know and we had a wonderful time. It's always great to hear your opinions and views.
    Take care,
    Alex

    • @AlexBraunton

Don't let the standard of trees impact your bonsai journey mate. All great trees started from a seed. Those trees are old and have been passed down through multiple generations. That's the best we can hope for our trees Scott. We can learn so much from looking at other trees and use that inspiration to impact our own design choices. This really is the golden era of bonsai in my opinion. We have so much knowledge at our finger tips.
I feel how you feel sometimes but don't let that ruin your experience. As you say it's a hobby and we can control how much time and effort we put into it. You are not stuck doing bonsai to make money but rather enjoyment and love for it. I've found the bonsai community to be very open and supportive.

Can't wait to visit GBS one day - Corin is an inspiration. I'd love access to some of their starter material you don't come across every day in UK garden centres. It can be hard not to look at these incredible trees and be disheartened, but remember, you are learning every step of the way with your garden centre material. Does it matter if none of them will one day be a legendary show tree? No! You still learn from them. As you get more experienced you may start working with more and more expensive or specialist material, as many do - those trees more often than not have been through several pairs of hands before they look as good as they do now. And beware the reduced table! It takes a lot of experience to be able to bring a poorly tree back to good health - they're reduced for a reason... you did well to not bite off more than you could chew.

I visited there 2 weeks ago with Jelle and then went on to Heron's the following day - it does blow your mind and certainmy gives you a reality check. BUT...don't let that stop you from achieving the same...it just takes time. I have loads of trees in my garden that are about 20 years old and have only been developed using clip and grow techniques. I still have lots of starter material that will one day become better. I don't throw stuff away unless it dies :)
