Thank you for sharing your story about working at your parents restaurant when you were growing up. I can relate since my parents ran a restaurant too. I had to help out too and hated it as a teenager but now as an adult I can definitely appreciate their hard hard work & sacrifice. 😘
This is why I ✨love✨ watching your videos Weylie. Asian American stories aren’t popular in mainstream TV, and to have your channel to watch and relate to, it feels really good. It feels familiar and it always makes my heart so happy to know that I’m not alone. 🙏🏼💗
can we just take a moment to recognize our girl, Weylie, and how far she has come in the kitchen 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 lol I still go back to that video when her & Wah first started dating and Wah was teaching her how to make sushi 😊 can’t believe that was more than a decade ago! SO PROUD OF YOU, GIRL!! ❤️❤️❤️
So glad to hear that we share the same experience with parents owning a Chinese restaurant. My childhood was the same with prepping ingredients, not having parents go to parent teacher interviews, smelling like the restaurant - I feel ya girly!! 😢 My brother, sister and I saw how hard our parents had to work when we were growing up and that's where we get our work ethic from. We're an interesting breed, us children-of-small-restaurant-owners!
This was so cute!! Also, seeing you remove the strawberry heads without wasting so much fruit was really satisfying lol. Would love to see more what i eat in a day vids like this please! 💕
I always would watch your videos when I was in high school, and I stopped idk when probably during my college years. But I’m in my mid 20s now and this brings me so much comfort. I explained to my s.o who you were and the influence you had on me and it’s brings my joy to see you are still making videos.
I remember watching your videos when you were younger. I teared up to see how you seem to be doing now. I love that you guys are still together. So happy for you both!
Hi from an OG subscriber from Japan👼🌿This was the first thing I watched after I got up today and you manifested the dream breakfast to so many current Japanese girlies and it was awesome!!! As always I enjoyed throughout the video, got inspired to start a day! Thank you☺️
Thanks for sharing your story. My parents have owned their restaurant 20+ so all the years of me growing up through adulthood. I started working when I was younger to helping out Friday’s by answering the phone for takeout. I used to be embarrassed bc my parents didn’t have glamorous jobs like being a doctor or lawyer. I still get PTSD sometimes from New Year’s Eve bc it’s so crazy busy and people go nuts. And I’d b sad because my parents never went to my track meets or could pick me up from practice. I always had to ask my friends for a ride home. But after all these years I’ve never appreciated them more, understanding that they worked so hard to give us a better life. It’s not talked about often so thanks for sharing
I also had a similar experience where my parents we immigrants to Canada and they ran a convenient store. I also helped them tend the store together or alone at a young age. I appreciated it while I got older too. It taught me to be more independent at an early age. :)
I can relate to you too. I remember being so embarrassed spending my Friday nights and Saturdays working. But now I realize it was amazing that my family followed their dream and did something they loved. ✨
Weylie girl you are just all around an amazing person. I pray for many more blessings to come your way sis. I've been watching your vids since you were in high school and you've grown into an amazing woman. And japanese cuisine actually most Asian cuisine is so healthy and natural. My ex husband is Chinese japanese mix so I learned many dishes. But , get it girl and much luv from upstate NY
Weylie! Your what I eat in a day are my favorite 💛 I didn’t work as a kid, but I lived with my single mom and she made me help and I am so thankful now! I used to peel snap peas and green beans all the time, what a throwback! 🥺
I can definitely relate to this, during the school years all I did at weekends was work at the restaurant and never got to hangout with friends. At that time obviously hated it but as I've grown up I'm starting to realising that our parents worked hard to give us a good quality of life and appreciate all the things they had sacrificed for us.
I’m not Chinese but my husband is and ever since dating him it opened my eyes to the hard work Asian parents put into their restaurant. Usually as a consumer we just see the end product and not everything that went into putting out a dish. My husband tells me stories of coming home from school and going straight to the restaurant too. Having the restaurant really helped shaped my hard working husband and it really helped humbled me. Thank you for sharing Weylie. You share this specific part of your life repeatedly, the “feeling embarrassed” but so many of us relate to it.
And I always wondered, why your food always looks so delic. It all makes sense now, that you helped your parents at their restaurant. Also My parents taught me when I was younger to appreciate their work, that we all should be thankful and grateful to live in a house, having enough food and drink and to buy also some specials
My parents own a Chinese restaurant still (20+ years) and when I was little I used to help out everyday. I had the same experience as you growing up (parents not being able to come to school events, bring me places, etc). I'm 26 now and still need to help out on Christmas and New Years! I wouldn't change it- it taught me so much and is the reason why I have the work ethic I have today. I appreciate everything so much more because I see them working hard! They're the reason why I lived a comfortable life and was able to go to college in NYC!
I’ve really missed watching your videos more frequently ☺️ Hope you’re doing better than the last time you expressed your insecurities and talked about UA-cam 💞💞💞 You are great and always inspiring!
I can relate to your childhood, I’m a first generation immigrant. My parents moved to San Francisco in the 80’s to flee the civil war in El Salvador and we had to work hard. They used to sell seat covers and Avon products at the flea markets, we also opened a store in Oakland at one point and I used to wrap gifts during holidays and Valentine’s Day, those were our busiest times of the year. I spent all of my weekends working with my parents & it definitely taught me the value of working hard & never taking anything for granted. I still get compliments for my creative gift wrapping skills til this day lol.
same experience here, i used to wash the dishes for my Mom when i was like 8 9 years old right on the street because she sold street food. i find it extremely normal and very grateful of since everything i have is thank to that food stall. xoxo from Vietnamm
Aww I love that you shared your experience of your younger self!!! 🥰 I can totally relate and have felt the same way when I was younger. My parents own a donut shop where I also started helping out as early as 6 yrs old, helping with bagging the donut holes for customers. I also felt embarrassed about my parents line of business because they were never home and would work long hours. It wasn’t until I was alot older that I started appreciate their sacrifices to make me have a better lifestyle when I’m older. I still help them out to this day and am very grateful that I learned at a young age how hard it is to earn money.
Love hearing about your childhood, it really reminds me of my own upbringing! I'm not a huge fan of sweet sandwiches but I'm feeling inspired to try and make them because they just looked so good in your video. 🤗
Both yours and awash energy and curiosity for other culture and cuisine is so inspiring to watch 😭 I send both of you much ❤️🍓from Tokyo I feel I learn so much from both of you each time🙏 and having a love and passion for food and life : いつもありがとうございます🙇♀️
Weylie I just want to say that I enjoy so much your videos, when I feel down your videos make me understand I should enjoy life more! And that cute music in the back, likeee…. Please never stop filming! Hugs)))
Love your cooking vids! My paternal grandparents owned a Chinese restaurant in Houston for years - Dragon Palace (before I was born) and my dad worked/helped out there.
I didn’t grow up in a restaurant but my mum opened up a hair salon when I was 10. I remember having to help out on weekends when I was 10 by being the cashier, the cleaner and I started learning how to wash customer’s hair and applying colour. I remember having to set up a stool at the basin because I was short and still am. I would hand out pamphlets in the shopping centre to help advertise and walk around house to house dropping pamphlets in mail boxes.
Hey girl! I see you and Wah are still using the alwayspan and I got myself one and I've had issue with it sticking all the time. Could you guy do a quick update on what you guys do to maintain the pan and if you'd still recommend it? I'll really appreciate it!
My parents owned a restaurant when I was a kid too! They still do actually. And I know exactly what you mean about smelling like Chinese food all the time ☹️. The saddest part was now we never had holidays off. We had to work extra hard on New Years, Mother’s Day, Christmas, etc. I could never attend New Years parties with my friends. But as an adult, I appreciate them so much ❤️
Awwww thank you for introducing Japanese food!! I wonder how much those strawberries from Japan are 😂 My mom likes mixing two different brands when she cooks curry!
I totally feel u and ur childhood family restaurant story. After school when my friends would always go do something cool like math enrichment or Kumon or something my brother and I would always go help out at our family's restaurant after school and one of our jobs was to stick stickers on the plastic bento boxes with our restaurant business information and I always hated it cuz it would be so time consuming and boring lol now am older I understand how hard it was for them too
I didn’t grow up in a restaurant but my family owned nail salons and furniture stores growing up. That meant a lot of sweeping, cleaning, and staying in the back and finding things to do 😂
I was a big fan of your channel about ten years ago and I always thought you and your boyfriend were so sweet, I'm so excited to see that you're still together :) and you're not aging WTF
Girlll, I grew up in a family who owned multiple restaurants too so yes, I so relate 😂 Our main restaurant was practically my second home. Instead of helping out with cooking tho, I helped out with folding those cloths for utensils and sat at the cashiers desk when everyone else was busy hahahaha
Girl! Preach! I started working for my family restaurant when I was 6 too. I would always go to the restaurant all the time after school and I felt like I never had a life. I used to be ashamed of it because I always smelled like restaurant food and I was never able to do a lot. But I’m thankful for my parents. They made their sacrifice to provide for us and give us a better living situation. 😭❤️ #asianfamstaystrong
I have an similar story to you my dad owns fast food restaurant too, i remember after work I helped with my parents out to the closed the restaurant and my dad took me from the restaurant to home, later on my dad retired to sell his restaurant to the next owner, my dad’s has an private fast food restaurant for 16 years
omg! I just moved to an area with a Marukai, but I was too intimidated to really buy anything since I didn't know where to start. will definitely be trying this!
The curry looks sooo good! I grew up working at my parent's takeaways. Helped prepare the ingredients, and then, later on, took orders out at the front. It was always uncomfortable having full-grown men looking over the counter and asking what I was doing while I did my homework 🥲 there were also countless racist acts that I witnessed or was a victim of.
Now I’m gonna go there with my 2 kids and buy that damn melon lol. Hey weylie, can you share where your bag is from? The one you wore while shopping! Thank you!

I’ve ALWAYS wanted to make that strawberry cake 😍. Everything looks amazing you killed it!
I remember watching your videos when you were younger. I teared up to see how you seem to be doing now. I love that you guys are still together. So happy for you both!

I love the way you cut off the crown from the strawberries, not wasteful at all. I do it the same way too.
This was soo nice!! Everything looked so fresh and delicious. The editing and music was dope too💯

Little tip when cutting the sando, leave the wrap on and cut, so that the sando stays in place and doesn’t get messy!

My family owned a Laos/Thai market that sold ready to eat food and growing up my job was shredding cases of payaya for papaya salad 😅
