  • Being a 4th official can be a great way to learn what it's like in the upper echelons of footballs pyramid. However, it can be difficult to prepare as you may need to be called into action if the referee is injured. Jon has to do this straight after another game, so we talk you through the preparation process and experience at a PL2 Brighton vs Everton U23 game.

Fun stuff...We are lucky in San Diego to have a FIFA family of refs the Mariscals who drop in on our monthly CORE educational training sessions and provide advice and guidance! Alejandro Mariscal being an MLS PRO referee who does countless 4th official duties each year...His twin brothers and sister are proper FIFA refs in their own right!

Might just ask if you've any tips for running the line. I've my first AR assignment this weekend and there's no coms/buzzer flags so just any kinda tips or tricks that'll help me get the extra few percent out of my own performance? I know you've quite a lot of experience as AR Jon

since u cant speak to them, always maintain eye contact, at every flag you raise, at possible fouls and foul throws, keep consistent eye contact with the main referee, also learn to use your hands/arms to communicate signals like, e.g. keep going..

this is a great questions and there has been an fantatic answers below! The only think i would add is before giving any fouls ask yourself ' if i was the refreee would i want this flag from my assistant?' and if the answer is yes then jump in a provide support!

Ask questions during the pregame is the main thing. The newer you are (AR/ center) go from the Laws, but more years/ games in the teams are the focus. Switching hands and mechanics also (same concept) switching from side step to run... and why.
Thinking like a game- staying with the ball best you can, call your goal kick from the flag if you think you can beat the restart (1pt) go around the flag (.5 pt). Give the ref thumbs up when checking on you (1pt) off play. Focus on the ref, don't drop your flag until ref drops their arm (1 pt). Assist other AR with offside/ foul (mirroring) subs (1pt.) off/ foul (3 pt.). Thumbs up fellow AR off play and thumbs back (3 pt). Corner kick get to the flag and step to the arc flag in hand to corner flag waiting for the ref to get to 18 or arc (1pt.).
Now, players and ball on goal line you signal ball out: goal box (-5 pt) penalty area (-10 pt) 18yrds+ (-15 pt). Burned on onside call, first two free (per half) but 3 sec to get angle 5 for ball, after 15yrds (-10pt) 20+yrds (-20 pts). Drop the flag (-5pts) step on the flag (-1 pt). Cross signals with ref (-5 pts). Field permitting [holes, dips, covers, etc] and ball away from touchline, stepping on the line (-2 pt) running on the line (-5 pt).
Bonus, assist with 2 card yellow (+50 pts) no 3 CT red cards. player identification yellow (+10). post game, assist with minutes/ goals for report (+5 per situation).
Hopefully little game will help make things fun to keep you focused and break the monotony. ***Notice*** no points for what an AR is supposed to do. These are all extras that when it becomes routine assessments and higher level assignments aren't a stress because your work rate is already that caliber; only experience lacks.
      have fun
