Fun fact: In the script, the two characters are simply referred to as "Young" and "Old". No names. It makes me wonder if they're actually the same person.
There's another movie called The Lighthouse (based on Edgar Allan Poe's poem of the same name) and in that movie, there was also a young and an old man on the island and they did indeed turn out to be the same person... as I understood it. It was a very bizarre movie same as this one, so I'm honestly not 100% sure, cause it also seemed like the young man turned out to be the old man's son, but then.. they were the same, then they were not. Bah, screw it all, lol.
I mean, they're both named Tom. That's on purpose in the script, so yeah. The head of the previous caretaker in the lobster trap looks like Tom and has one eye, like the sea gull (with the reincarnated soul), like Tom in the final shot as his liver is being eaten yet again..and again. Jack (sorry, I mean Tom) had always been the caretaker of the hotel (sorry, I mean lighthouse.)
The film is allegorical to the tale of Prometheus, the Titan who stole fire from the gods and gifted it to mankind. Being forbidden to do so, as punishment Prometheus was chained to a rock and forced to an endless cycle of an eagle eating his liver over and over again. The lighthouse being fire, Pattinson being Prometheus, Dafoe being Zeus/the gods of Olympus, and the island being the rock. You should check out the special features in the Blu-ray. They really show how much love and effort Eggers put in to bring this movie the way it is. And the thing about the aspect ratio is that it is not only tighter, but taller than other aspect ratios, to frame with even more impact that phalic lighthouse. You'll see something similar in The Witch, or as the fans call it, The VVitch, where the tall trees of the forest get kinda the same treatment.
Thanks, Tom! Thanks, Shaun! 🌊 I love this one, too!!! And, indeed, this one is for discerning minds... to be analysed and savored, not simply consumed.
Hope you guys can get around to watching a David Lynch film sometime, I'd say Blue Velvet is the best introduction to his work or if you really want to jump right into the deep end you could try Mulholland Drive or even Eraserhead

This was one of the last films I saw on the big screen and good god THAT was an experience
i haven’t seen this film since it came out, seeing it again made me remember how uncomfortable it made me feel. it does such a great job of creating scenes that make you feel like you’re descending into madness.
When they give the ratings you see one with a TBC it is the movie "Ready or Not", a very fun film, I can not wait to see their reactions to it.
MEIN GOTT, the bass on my headset while watching this makes it even more intense!
Whenever someone mentions molasses... I think of that scene. This style of filmmaking is sooo brilliantly insane
Also absolutely amazing seagull performances!!
I wasn't sure what to make of this movie first time I saw it but did like it. On second viewing I really loved it. Both performances were amazing.
Great Reaction Fellas !, Love The Lighthouse! it was my second favorite film of 2019 right behind Joker. The atmosphere to the characters is just so unique and rich making you question just about everything taking place in the runtime of the film.
Dafoe was creepy as hell in this movie.
Always XD
Not Dafriend in this one
The curse monologue still resonates in my head.
Can't wait for you to watch The VVitch, Tom! It's such a great movie!
I really enjoyed your reactions on this one. please do the Color Purple and Misery. looking forward I can't wait to watch more of your videos
Watched this at an Arclight in Hollywood and was the ONLY person in my theater!! Wild experience!!
"What's he doing? Oh..."
Yes!!!! This movie is great I saw and clicked immediately!!!!
11:39 check out the Sascha Schneider's painting called Hypnosis.
This movie is one of my favourites. Something else between all those superhero/starwars etc. action, put your brains on the shelf films.
I highly recommend the special edition of Angel Heart if you haven't already
An Alan Parker classic.
Holy smokes, why do you want to scar them with that film? I thought you liked these guys?!? Lo
One of my favorite films ever. I love it. The old school vibes are great
You guys made the same expressions as me when I watched this. My jaw was constantly dropped.
The acting was beyond amazing. I don't think I can watch it more than once.
I often find that I don't always like certain movies while still being able to appreciate the mastery required to make them. The Lighthouse is great... I also don't like it.
Good reaction! Personally thought it was really fascinating to watch. Especially how some movie directors got this immense and broad collection of different options and technology and yet they decide to shoot it in black/white and with a smaller screen-width.
Movies like these make me wonder which movies are going to become classics in about forty years and which ones are not.
Absolutely love this movie awesome reactions guys 👍👍
