That was Auld Lang Syne, a Scottish folk song that’s usually sung to commemorate the end of something, like at the end of the year on New Years Eve or at a funeral or at a closing ceremony.
Your rendition nailed the vibe perfectly.
And it's the Ghostbusters anthem! (at least on C64!) xD
It was used as the melody for the national anthem of Korea before 1936.
I didn't know that.
This song plays in stores here in Japan every day, when the stores are about to close.
Now it makes total sense.
The band Direct Hit! also uses it in a few songs in their album Brainless God.
we're only missing the alcoholic breath that comes with it 😂
That song was Auld Lang Syne -- traditionally sung on New Years Eve
That's what it's called?!
I've always called it old Lang zine
@@thedangersofoxygen135 I'm guessing you sang the song like this "Should old acquaintance be forgot and the neeeee be daaaaaa hooooooo baaaaaa. Meeeee maaaaa duuu daaaaa dooooo deeeeee pooo taaaa doooo and the muuuuuu of old Lang Zine." Lol.
Lame song
As soon as I saw the word "Andes" on it, I realized it's basically a keyboard actuated pan flute.
I've never heard of such a thing, but leave it to you to find one. Pretty cool!
I've always wanted to see a "wet-tuned" melodica. It's when each note plays 2 or 3 reeds that are slightly out of tune to produce a chorus effect. It's common in some accordions but I don't know if anyone makes a wet-tuned melodica
Melodicas only have one reed per note, so that's not really possible
@@alfredomeister9817 It is possible it would just be expensive to build and would be very bulky
That bass melodica has got a great skanky sax tone.I want more!
I like skanks
This honestly sounds like something that would be in little big planet
Yes!
Melodicas are great, but yes, this thing is a different kind of beast. As a flute player I appreciate the difference. Thanks for an interesting demo!
Why the hell don’t you make sound tracks for indie games. You would kill it.
Perfect for an adventure game.
When you decide to go hangout with the bard between quests
The little automatic one seems like it could have some potential for 3D printing custom discs. Might be a bit limited, but I imagine it wouldn't be too hard for someone that knows what they're doing.
The overtones of electric melodicas are great
In the moment while playing some big big chords and the air stream is near collapsing... This cannot be simulated, but the usual sounds are mostly quite annoying but i can understand the motivation to work with these instruments
It would be perhaps interesting to mount some (piezo?) pickups on/in it.
Was hoping that someone would have said this.
Then mixing it and putting it thru pedals would be a good idea!
_The Go! Team_ have used recorders rather well in a few of their songs like "Get It Together" and "The Wrath of Marcie".
Add a contact mic, or similar, and bolt on an arduino or raspberry pi and a touch screen loaded up with fx VSTs. Quarter inch jack output and you're golden!
Might be interesting to see if you can play the flute keyboard with one of those air mattress or beach toy inflator pump pedals. Not sure if that confers any particular useful advantage or quality, but it could be an idea to play with.
It was the 4th grade when all of us cool kids wanted to play the drums or the saxophone or a cool instrument but our parents were broke so we only could afford the flute class. But no matter what we wanted to play music so we didn't care. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
I love my Andes.... Super fun instrument
Air speed to pitch bend is obviously super important too for intonation
Love the pedal (moist) and the beehive mmmm mmmm fun! As to your MOD Im thinking stand up the fluit floot flute section and ad some sort of foot pump bellows to the blowie part, so its like a mini foot pump organ
It's Auld Lang Syne. Which is actually one of my favorite songs. One of my favorite standards anyway. At most holidays you get cheery music or solemn liturgical laments. But the only mood that fits you when you're drunk on New Years, after the ball has lowered in time square and the numbers have all changed, as the party has passed its apogee and people are milling about, figuring out how they're getting home or coupling off and finding some privacy, is bittersweet. That's just how everyone feels then. And that song just fits. That's why I like that song. You'll usually find me somewhere playing it over and over on an acoustic guitar at that point.
2:30 being from a french Canadian background, sounds like the folk song "ce n'est qu'un au revoir" or translated to "its only a goodbye"
This is probably like blowing into an ocarina, you can bend a lot up and down by varying the air pressure. To play cleanly you need a steady air stream, otherwise it sounds goofy. The Tuneyville piano thing with the records is pure genius, I love it
I would have absolutely no idea how to include those instruments in a track and you did a great job. I imagine the blower motors could be replaced by a bellows which would be a lot quieter.
I've never seen that Critter And Guitari sampler before it's crazy.
that would basically be an electronic accordion lmao
I was wondering what that blue box was called! Thx!
The first time I saw this instrument was in a PoopPoopFart video (PPF now) who mainly used it for kirby song covers. I fell in love with it in that context but I could never convince meyself to get one.
You watch scat porn?
In big bold Boom Voice "SIMON THE MAGPIE ON HIS WACKY FLUTE ORGAN LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!"
Everyone knows that you're a big fan of melodicas because everyone is a big fan of melodicas! It's is physically impossible to be otherwise.
Yup I’m a big fan of melodicas
I just noticed in an older video you have a sticker that said "semen the creampie" and i had to pause it to stop laughing. My face hurts.
I also have a couple melodicas and a chord organ or two, but I've never seen a bass melodica. I need one!
It's got a really nice skanky sax tone. I'd love to hear some bass lines on it.
This thing seems like panpipes to me, wondering if you add attachments to make all of them longer and have a deeper sound, because it is painfully highpitched
I wonder if you can make something like a bagpipes bag for the mouthpiece. That way you could maybe use a bellows to add air while you play?
That bass melodica sounds really nice!!!!
The melodicas are amazing and expressive instruments, they have a lot of potential in good hands and lips but the Andes has a very strident voice and its very hard to control the sound on it, unfortunately we will never see an Alto Andes because of the manufacture price and small public for it.
You have a very charismatic channel, good video.
Auld Lang Syne is what you played.
You're a mad man, Mag pie, and I'm here for it.
Thank you for being so invested Simon. Thank you for showing us all the awesomely terrible instruments there are out there, you friggin rock. I might try making one of these lol
aaah what does the leaver do though!?!?
What if you lengthen the tubes
Pitch
if you want to mod it - you could try adding resonant or damping material round the organ pipes to affect timbre?
I bought one of these about 10 years ago, used it once on a recording and i haven't seen it since then! Thank you for reminding me that i have one. Now, i have to try to remember where i left it...
You're a regular Mike Oldfield
I'd definitely be interested in seeing a diy version of the flute piano.
In theory you could 3d print your own records for that thing.
“I need to call my Mom.” 😂😂😂
Oh the bass one though!
Looking into making my electric Melodica have stereo outs and my first thought was "I wonder if like Simon the Magpie or someone has any videos on melodicas"
I actually have one of those, and the biggest challenge is finding a suitable use for it. The upper half of the keyboard is way too shrill and I can't stand hearing it. I wish they had built it an octave lower ... but doubling the pipe length would make the instrument too big, maybe?
10:00 I was dancing to this. Not proud of it but I won’t apologise either 🌞
Try not to think about it as a backing track to Girls Just Wanna Have Fun because once you do , ….
I was just laughing and imagining R2-D2 going apeshit as a DJ.
Play it under water. Gotta play it under water
Try adding an inflatable bag and turning it into a bagpipe. Maybe add some recorders to act as a drone.
when you started playing along with the first song it sounded like a trippy version of Norwegian Wood for like half a second
This is friggin fantastic.
They are down to $149 now on Amazon.
The perfect instrument for those meme renditions of popular songs to play when your dog falls off the couch or gets hit in the face with the ball bc slow reaction time
Makes everything sound like Yoshi's Island for the 3DS.
oooh! hirokazu ando used this on the kirby's epic yarn soundtrack, at the very least on the song whispy's forest
Play it through a Leslie speaker
Ola Englund collab when
what if you created some sort of controlled motorized air pump to make it a drone?
Simon the Flautist
the small electric toy flute piano is the best toy ever! So cool
I feel like both of those toys were from like about the 1970s or so I feel like them melodica flute toy was from the 70s and then there’s the flute melodica piano thingy that I feel like it could be from the 70s or 80s who makes that flute piano toy thing because I want to find one
This either sounds like Spongebob, or Dark Crystal.
Use that panflute keybed as a start for a mini pipe organ?
They used this instrument for the melody in Gorillaz - broken
This is your funniest & coolest video in ages…. 😂
Thought of running water through it? It wouldn't make pitched sound as such but you might get something interesting if you put a mic right next to the pipes.
That is so neat
Does it have MIDI?
Add the lights from one time vapes. They have some thing where it reacts to öh luft passi ng though
I literally bought a melodica today
I would only use this for dissonant flute chords. Just slap a little distortion on it and we're good
People say I'm nuts for spending $200 on a Korg NTS-2. I think you've got me beat bud. Lol
Sounds awesome though. 👌 👍
I love the drama that melodicas bring
I purchased a Suzuki Andes 25 F Flute keyboard a couple months ago, but it came without the two mouthpieces and neck strap that were supposed to be included. Have had no success contacting the company I ordered from. Do you know if the mouthpieces from your keyboard melodicas fits interchangeably with the Suzuki Flute Keyboard? I need a mouthpiece...URGH! I agree.... your melodica keyboards sound much better than the Suzuki
I have one and for how hard it is to get the hang of I love it
There’s so many inappropriate jokes here.
It would be cool to hack some kinda rotating valve into it for a vibrato effect
The late Josh Fischel in the band Bargain Music to me will always be the g.o.a.t. of melodica.
You could combine the actions, make stops, and you would be on your way to an organ!
I thought it was the Arthur theme at first
Flutes are monophonic, but this is polyphonic so it's cool
Be careful, there's spammers posing as the channel in the comment section!
MIDI convert it for giggles
If they make a new Little Big Planet game.... you should be on the soundtrack
That thing sounds like a slide whistle with keys. Is it the world's smallest Calliope?
1:35 Did you just do the Spongebob fog horn?
That was Scottish folk song Auld Lang Syne!
You should try to submerge the flutes in water to create a bubbling melodica.
Smart!
Sounds like happy video game,,, music,,,,or a cartoon❤
This guy sure can twiddle a knob
Version of honer is so much nice
Bro thats what I said haha im back right now sober lol
Just sounds like a more cute recorder
PPF used to have one of these
What does the small silver handle on the side do? Does it change the tone?
Use an electronic car tyre inflator to power it
its the new years eve song!
This is essentially a lung powered organ
What's the blue thing with the antenna! That you were speeding up and slowing down!
I think you mean the ”Kaleidoloop”. The antenna looking thing is in that case a microphone. It’s like a really primitive pitch shifty looper.
@@SimonTheMagpie I watched a lot of your videos last night and found the kliedolooper . You are very inspiring. And entertaining. Thanks for responding.
I want to buy the flute piano
Put soap water inside to blow bubbles.
