It's almost midnight and I'm watching an old episode of Gunsmoke when someone refers to someone as a highwayman. It stirs an old memory of this song ,so sitting alone at midnight in the dark I pull this up, and I'm so glad I did
Jimmy Webb was one of the greatest songwriter's of our time! My personal favorite is " Wichita Lineman", A big hit for Glen Campbell! This guy takes a back seat to nobody!
this is why youtube is so great. there are so many incredible singer songwriters we have all yet to know. i will dig deeper into the music of jimmy webb. thank you youtube, thank you jimmy webb
The third verse is a tribute to those 100+ who died during the construction of Hoover Dam in the 1930s. I am speculating that Mr. Webb viewed the memorial at the dam when US Highway 93 crossed over the top of it. In the wake of security concerns after 9/11/2001, a bypass of the dam was constructed and completed in 2010. Since then, through traffic is no longer allowed through the dam, but an exit now allows visitors to approach it from the Nevada side.
Jimmy Webb has written so many great songs - By The Time I Get To Phoenix, Up, Up and Away, Didn't We, MacArthur Park, Wichita Lineman, Galveston - but my three personal favourites are The Moon's A Harsh Mistress, Do What You Gotta Do and this song, performed here so brilliantly.
Jimmy Webb has written some of the most awesome, inspiring, emotional, songs I've ever heard. Gives me that shiver chill on the back of my neck. (The true test of a great song.)
Jimmy has written so many songs that have made people famous and earned massive amounts of money. Too bad he hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves.
Saw Jimmy perform this song live in Woodstock IL back in April of 2019. Made me chuckle when prior to starting the song his said "Well lets see if we can give this Baldwin a workout". Meet him after the show, a true Gentleman.
@@daanhooiveld8940 Glen Campbell was the first to record it after Jimmy and wanted to release it as a single but Capital declined. His version is the best
I wish Jimmy would write a female version of this song - women who come back again and again. My 6 year old grandson is fascinated with the concept and loves this song.
Jimmy's contribution to our lives is immeasurable and unsurpassed. I hope that Covid lifts in time for his scheduled visit to London in a couple of months.
Jimmy is recognised as THE master songwriter. Anyone like myself who cobbles songs together, in the hope that someone somewhere might like them, is in awe of Jimmy.
One of my very favourite songs which I have performed many times, this is the first time I've ever heard Jimmy's original, SUPERB , it has facets not explored in the Highwaymen's version.
a place called Boulder on the wild Colorado, I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below, they buried me in that great tomb that know's no sound. but I'm still around
Thanks Jimmy. This song makes me sensitive. I remember the grandfather who fought in Tali-Ihantala on the last battlefield against the Russian invaders. 🔱 Slava Ukraini 🔱.
Lordfoxy, I think you are right, this man is a genious, quite possibly the best song writer of all history...wonderful playing and so moving...thanks for posting Allan, a real masterpiece
hmm, let's see. Bernie Taupin (songwriter for Elton John's music), Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, David Bowie, Prince, Johnny Cash, Wille Nelson, Waylon... I already named more than 10. I need to listen more to Jimmy Webb!
The best song ever written. I heard Glen Campbell do it on TV years ago. I figured out the chords, and wrote down the words. I've been singing it for decades now. Wish I'd have written it.
this is so much better than the over-produced '80's country pop version... and i THOUGHT i loved that one i'll find a place to rest my spirit, if i can. perhaps i may become a highwayman again...
Excellent performance from the Master...Regardless of whom, no one can outplay the Master of the song, Not Glen, not Kris, Willie, Waylon, or Johnny, and this certainly includes me. Great song Jimmy, one of the best ever written...Hats off to you...Guthrie Thomas
To those questioning if Jimmy is still alive. He just released an album this past June (2010) covering his tune with lot of well-known singers. He may not have the best voice, but the emotion he puts into this children (his songs) contribute much more to the song that "mere cover artists" never quite manage. And though they are good, they "can't touch the hem of the garment" of the Master. Jimmy, if you're within the sound of my voice, Come to Portland, OR...and Send along a miracle ticket.
This song always made me think of king Kong when I was a kid, the highwayman made me think of Captain Englehorn the sailor made me think of Hayes the damn builder made me think of Lumpy and the star shipman made me think of Jack Driscoll. To this day I still don't know why but it's haunting these lyrics will be cherished until the end of time.
That's a relief - we are reading from the same page after all! :) About 2 years ago I went into work and announced with some great pride that I had received an email from JIMMY WEBB! The looks of stunned indifference will haunt me forever! LOL!
There should be more performance by this pro on youtube. I've seen him perform and his version is always very compelling. Great song writer. Terrific performer.
Jimmy Webb may be the best songwriter of the second half of the Twentieth century. If he is not he is their match. He puts to shame writers like Andrew Loyd Webber.

What a great performance by the composer himself! Very emotional performance...
Correct, I'm yet to see anyone perform this song in the same way Jimmy Webb does. A great song and all versions of this song are fantastic, this version though... wow :-)
Love the version by The Highwaymen. I didn't know until tonight that Webb wrote it. This version with piano is seriously awesome. I think I will still prefer the other because that's the one I know first and best, but this... a fantastic version. Makes me want to buy his music!
The first time Jimmy sang this on the BBC it was a chat show and he'd not long gotten off the 'plane, he'd developed a sore throat and his voice was threatening to give out at any moment. To be honest, I thought it was great, and being the first time I'd heard the song I keep thinking it should sound like that.... Must search further, it may be on here. :)
Jimmy Webb is truly an underrated singer-songwriter, the genius force behind the inventions of song such as "MacArthur Park" (made a hit by Richard Harris), "Moon's A Harsh Mistress" (sung by Joe Cocker) and "All I Know" (made famous by Art Garfunkel. This song tells a great/memorable but haunting story. His voice is aching with despair and his piano playing is somber. The overall effect is mesmerizing. Personally, I like both versions of this as they are different and suit different moods. A+
Hi Shawnaga, do respect those of us that love Jimmy Webb, to those of us that love him, he is one of the great songwriters of all time, alongside Henry Clay, Stephen Foster and hell, from recent times? Let's go with Tony Hatch. The Highwaymaen's version is very good, I love all of the Highwaymen, but as a Jimmy Webb fan, I have to say they almost sound Kareoke compared to the maestro! Enjoy music, don't fight about it eh? Rock on.
This is probably it for me. I've been searching for the ultimate version of this song for many years. Jimmy & Paddy McAloon (which I love), The Highwaymen (which I also love), and JW on the album "Ten Easy Pieces." This is the one I love most though. (Feel free to direct me to more versions). At risk of starting a war, my friends and I have all agreed that this version make (our idols) The Highwatmen's version sound almost Kareoke in comparison. The melody here is the original far better.
There’s always an extra deep connection to hear it from the writer.
God I love this song - the writer's version and every other version I have heard! No matter who the performer, it's just damn good songwriting.
It's almost midnight and I'm watching an old episode of Gunsmoke when someone refers to someone as a highwayman. It stirs an old memory of this song ,so sitting alone at midnight in the dark I pull this up, and I'm so glad I did
Damn right. I have said it before and I will say it again. Nobody sings Jimmy Webb like Jimmy Webb.
His voice sounds great to me- i like imperfect voices with true intent and thats what Jimmy Webb provides- a truly great songwriter!!!
Jimmy Webb was one of the greatest songwriter's of our time! My personal favorite is " Wichita Lineman", A big hit for Glen Campbell! This guy takes a back seat to nobody!
I love both versions but this one with the piano does give you chills
The Highwaymen version was better for its vocals, and this one is better for the background music.
this is why youtube is so great. there are so many incredible singer songwriters we have all yet to know. i will dig deeper into the music of jimmy webb. thank you youtube, thank you jimmy webb
Geez. So many terrific song writers that are just under the radar: Jimmy Webb, Towns Van Zandt, John Hiatt, J.J. Cale. Nick Drake........
Jimmy wrote so many good tunes! One of the greats for sure about it.
The "Machine Elves", say, "Look here, now look here and here too." I always try to listen to them. Widens my horizon.

Nothing beats the songwriter singing his soul in to his song
Jimmy has written so many songs that have made people famous and earned massive amounts of money. Too bad he hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves.
Saw Jimmy perform this song live in Woodstock IL back in April of 2019. Made me chuckle when prior to starting the song his said "Well lets see if we can give this Baldwin a workout". Meet him after the show, a true Gentleman.
What an incredible song, performed to perfection by Jimmy- or by Willie, Waylon, Johnny and Kris. I love 'em both.
Glen Campbell's rendition of this song is even more true to the original by Webb. He plays the piano parts on guitar. Impressive.
@@daanhooiveld8940 Glen Campbell was the first to record it after Jimmy and wanted to release it as a single but Capital declined. His version is the best
Ashley Campbell's Version rocks also..
I wish Jimmy would write a female version of this song - women who come back again and again.
My 6 year old grandson is fascinated with the concept and loves this song.
Thank you , Jimmy!! As always, you inspired several generations!!
beautiful...soulful. I could listen to him forever...
Jimmy's contribution to our lives is immeasurable and unsurpassed. I hope that Covid lifts in time for his scheduled visit to London in a couple of months.
I think this is the best version of this , straight from the source .
Jimmy is recognised as THE master songwriter.
Anyone like myself who cobbles songs together, in the hope that someone somewhere might like them, is in awe of Jimmy.
I think I just fell in love.
Gorgeous song
One of my very favourite songs which I have performed many times, this is the first time I've ever heard Jimmy's original, SUPERB , it has facets not explored in the Highwaymen's version.
One of America's greatest modern composers; all you doubters should check his catalogue of work.
a place called Boulder on the wild Colorado, I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below, they buried me in that great tomb that know's no sound. but I'm still around
Haunting lyrics, gorgeous melody. Where has this song been all my life?
Jimmy Webb wrote this?
Well, whattaya know about that.
It all makes perfect sense.
Thanks Jimmy. This song makes me sensitive. I remember the grandfather who fought in Tali-Ihantala on the last battlefield against the Russian invaders. 🔱 Slava Ukraini 🔱.
Songwriting MASTERPIECE!
Lordfoxy, I think you are right, this man is a genious, quite possibly the best song writer of all history...wonderful playing and so moving...thanks for posting Allan, a real masterpiece
My one true love Jimmy Webb.
In the top 10 song writers of all time.

I'm going to see him next week and can't wait. I have been a fan of his writing for all my life!
This song gives me goosebumps...Jimmy is a true poet.
I just love this song! I didn't know JW sang.....I want this song to end my funeral.
The best song ever written. I heard Glen Campbell do it on TV years ago. I figured out the chords, and wrote down the words. I've been singing it for decades now. Wish I'd have written it.
Jimmy Webb wrote a ton of songs for many famous artists! He is so gifted!
This is so good
Absolutely Brilliant
This is one of those great songs, the trail of humankind through time.
I'm so glad this was posted. Love to hear it done by the composer/singer. R.
+ritaggn Indeed! Jimmy Webb is the best expresionist of the americana folklore...
What a song, what lyrics, what genius!! Many pale in comparison!! Thank you, Jimmy Webb.
One of the handful of really great melodicists /songwriters up there with anyone you can think of, great post!

What about Albert Lee!
You're right of course, but check out the white buffalo's version. He does it justice, no doubt. Gotta find a live version to truly appreciate it.
white buffalo is the best version of all,,
Moment's in music: sound track to a life: after a dream about rebirth Jimmy shared this song:
One of the many many great song writers, close to the top of the heap. When you think about it, that's a great compliment.
This is incredible, bye Felicia...

This is one of the finest songs I've ever heard. Amazing, thanks for posting this
Cool as hell, Johnny Webb is a gangsta and a genius, deserves more

great video, song and artist

Awesome job! And @ jamesdt1980 - that's hilarious! Died by his blade indeed! LOL! Best song...peace.
Great song, .... as are all of Jimmy's songs
Jimmy Webb may be the best songwriter of the second half of the Twentieth century. If he is not he is their match. He puts to shame writers like Andrew Loyd Webber.
What a great performance by the composer himself! Very emotional performance...
Galvestonians should be very proud of their native son. Songs that go to the soul.
For "some" reason, Jimmy is pretty special here in Wichita. ;)
Actually he's from Elk City Oklahoma
very interesting version! I like it! Nice one Jimmy! Beautiful piano!
Jazz
Beautiful, great song writer!
Correct, I'm yet to see anyone perform this song in the same way Jimmy Webb does. A great song and all versions of this song are fantastic, this version though... wow :-)

Does anyone remember that in addition to this great song and so many others, that Jimmy Webb also wrote MacArthur Park? What a songwriter!
You always think about the great songs 'ol Jimmy wrote, but he's also a pretty great piano player.
Quiet, unassuming genius
BRILLIANT !

I recommend his 1993 album "Suspending Disbelief". It showcases a master songsmith at work. Love the song "Wish you were here ( Postcards from Paris)
