    Thank you for this. As a counselling student I'm told about 'respecting diversity' a lot, but the more I've learnt about counselling the less it has made sense to me why gender-related distress is treated differently to other kinds of psychological incongruence, where there's a sense of helping to hold the whole, realistic self of the person in warmth and acceptance. So I loved their 'theory lecture'!

    So refreshing to hear these two who are so grounded in reality. It amazes me what fads the medical profession will buy into. As a linguist, I can confirm there is plenty of "mischief" in language use around these issues. It's part of the attack on reality. Part of the postmodern project is to refuse clear, stable, traditional definitions.

      Slightly off topic but I find terms like "the best version of yourself" and "living my best life" have deliberately 'slipped' into language as a form of social conditioning for the metaverse. The first term makes me think of software updates whilst the second of alternate realities. I'd be interested in your views Amy?

    Around four years ago, these two were responsible for bringing me into the gender debate. Rather than what is happening, of more interest to me is how and why is this happening. I could not at first believe there were psychotherapists who blindly affirmed. Were they simply incurious? Thank you for the interview. Sue and Marcus help throw light on all the questions relevant, along with a little societal context to ponder.

      In safeguarding practice reviews a recurring theme is a lack of professional curiosity, which is clearly as you say a major issue here, alongside other concerns such as the bullying of lobbyist groups. Practice should always be informed by evidence base, not feelings. There is such a lack of evidence base as people are scared to explore this topic objectively because people are too concerned about doing the 'right thing' which has shifted from the wealthfare of the child being paramount to the 'right thing' being a focus on protecting individual and organisational reputations. Significant funding from pharmaceutical manufacturers is a form of bribery where research is concerned too as the gender industry is a huge business model.

My big bro, sister and all my niblings arrived yesterday and my wonderful, gifted, stable, mature, extremely intelligent nephew told me and my parents that he had chosen a new gender-neutral name, and went by any pronouns. The sad thing about all of this is that there _are_ people out there with gender dysphoria, but the trans activist has made the idea of addressing it not only off the table for discussion, but convinced themselves there is no such thing. Very articulate and its refreshing to see medical professionals being able to express different narratives. The fact is, many are very much against current practices. However, face stiff consequences for being vocal. It's also not just from NGOs; state, and federal can administer penalties. They face censor, re-education, public scrutiny and doxing. Some of the more serious consequences can be license suspension, revocation, termination, loss of privileges, and severe financial damages from lawsuits. Excellent podcast!

    Fascinating and insightful conversation. The other two cultural shifts that have caused this to happen are -
    No 1 The Selfie. As soon as mobile phone cameras could turn the lens around to face the user, the rise in self obsession increased dramatically. So of course with so many self obsessed people around there's going to be an increase of insecurity about appearance and fitting into society.
    No 2. Sci-fi Fantasy. The most popular movies of the last 10 years have all been fantasy sci-fi. So many of these young people are gamers, comic readers and fantasy fiction fans. They talk about society trying to ' erase Trans people' in the same way that 'X-Men' are being erased by conservative authorities in the Marvel Universe. Of course this is nonsense. In fact it's the opposite. In Islamic countries like Iran, transitioning is used by the state to eradicate gay men by turning them into Transwomen.
    This explains the vile hostility to JK Rowling as she is a fantasy writer who talks about reality. The reality is that two Transwomen friends of mine died this year from complications caused by their medications. Trying to alter your biology can cause serious negative problems, except for drug companies and surgeons who are laughing all the way to the gender clinic.

  • @thel1355
    @thel1355 2 роки тому +14

    If there were a drug that pregnant women could take that would prevent gender dysphoria in their children, then the activists would try to outlaw it. They are not concerned with understanding or addressing gender dysphoria, but rather they value transgenderism in itself. That is, transgenderism is the goal, not an unfortunate but sometimes necessary intervention to address a psychological condition. If you just assume they are trying to make as many transgender people as possible, then you'll accurately model their behavior whatever they claim to believe.

    Sorry to be a pedant, Benjamin. Whorf was wrong. The Eskimos (Inuit) do not have fifty words for snow. They have three or four, like us. The confusion was a function of lack of knowledge of the language. As I have said before, the terms 'gender', 'feminine' and 'masculine' have no place outside a book of grammar. Biological entities have a sex, female or male. 'Gender' idealogues are stereotyping and therefore sexist in their insistence on denying variation of personality within each sex - ie a girl has permission to be a 'tomboy', and a boy to be 'camp'.

    Here's a controversial thought that just crossed my mind:
    Could it be that there are some individuals who simply can not be helped. No matter what the treatment may be, perhaps for both the practitioner and the patient, you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.
    Maybe some illnesses are some people's human condition and they're destiny is to live with it or die by it. We all have to die of something as we must live with something that limits us by our condition as particular human beings

    • @kaye666

      Yeah I don't think it's that controversial (not to me). Like you say, there are lots of things we can't cure, all we can do is improve a person's quality of life. I think for problems in a person's head, how does a doctor have the right to perform physical modifications on a person's body? I think it should only be acceptable in rare and extreme cases, but this has now become the norm, and a person's right. It is so deeply wrong that they are doing this to children and vulnerable people. This shouldn't be the standard medical pathway.

  • @themeaningofgender
    @themeaningofgender 2 роки тому +4

    1:09:30 yes, this is the matter which I think is critical (the word Gender = what does it mean?) the fact that Polish does not have an equivalent word is not something insignificant. It should make us pause and ask ourselves "if that is the case, then what does the word mean?" not just about how it is used, but it's actual meaning. Thus i started my channel with that name. I will give you an example of why it is important. Recently, I received an e-mail from a local sports organization in which I am involved. It was a promotional message inviting people of "all genders" to come to an event and try the sport without fee. I privately replied to the message to say that there is no word "genders" in the dictionary (I use a encyclopedic dictionary from 1983 - it is an amazing book). The word is Gender, singular - no plural form of the word is correct. With this in mind, what exactly is meant by (for example) Gender Dysphoria? Gender Expression? Gender Identity? are we using the word correctly in these phrases? if not, then what word (or words) would be the correct words to describe what is trying to be conveyed by these phrases? I agree with Marcus that there is linguistic mischief being made here. I think we need to find our clear from this mischief for when "words lose their meaning, people lose their freedom." (Confucius said that - or words to that effect).

    • @ebflegg

    These 2 are amazing. Thank you Benjamin Boyce. I personally don't understand how there can be a medical understanding of gender, one that relates to outcomes like drugs and surgery. Surely this is a philosophical question? It's too abstract and subjective and it doesn't directly relate to someone's physical body, not in a true medical sense. This is what HAS been happening, "you like playing with dolls, we'll make you a vagina". Surely anyone who needs to transition has issues with their sexed body and not their gender, as gender is more about societal roles and expression. I'm not sure how issues around gender are relevant for medicalisation, not now and not ever?
    One rare exception: I understand how a man struggling to live as a man might need to transition to appear female (or vice versa), but I think these should be exceptional cases and it should be recognised that it is to soothe an extreme mental disorder, it's not best medical practice, as it has now become. It should take years of therapy as an ADULT - never a child - to come to the conclusion this might be the only way to help. But it should be recognised that we're doing it outside of the confines of what medicine tells us because the case is serious type-thing, it's not a logical or even a necessarily effective treatment. We should acknowledge that we're doing something to someone's physical body due to a problem in their head and note that this is in the best interest of patients in rare and extreme circumstances, and after extensive therapy. It should a last resort, rather than the natural pathway for people with gender dysphoria.
    Does that make sense?

    I had counselling in my 20s and my therapist was convinced I had been abused, and I felt this was an assumption made by him. The issue of therapists projecting onto clients is a well known one and does not just apply to gender therapists in gender clinics.
    . Obviously safeguards are needed but this incident should not be used as an excuse to deny trans children the care they need. Care for trans children and young adults should come from a place of concern and understanding -and not hatred of all tings trans masquerading as care and understanding.

    USA mom here, My daughter is an ROGD case, identified as trans masc, started out of the blue around 12/13 years old, despite her school changing her name and pronouns behind my back, her pediatrician threatening me with her ultimate suicide, her friends and friends parent's "affirming" her and shaming me, I never gave in, not to the name, not to the pronouns, not to medicalization. She's 18 now and, so far, unmedicalized and now claiming a, in my opinion, 'lateral" trans nonbinary identity, she still seems to want testosterone and "top surgery" but has scheduled no appointments or consultations that i am aware of. She at least at this point, even if she doesn't believe she is female, she at least knows now that she is not male. While not giving in to the affirmation caused a huge rift between us, I still took care of her, let her know that as an adult if she went onto take hormones or have surgery, while I would never agree with those decisions, that if she wasn't feeling well from these interventions, I would still make and bring her chicken soup while she was healing. So while there were times when she seemed to down right hate me she's never been able to pretend that I didn't love her even if I don't agree with her.

    There is no moral, or logical way to validate the idea that you are born in the wrong body. Gender is stereotypes, and not the same as sex. It needs to be made abundantly clear to anyone who has gender dysphoria that they are pathologically obsessed with the opposite sex, and that their dysphoria isn't more logically based then dysphoria that an anorexic might experience. Particularly male people need to learn that they have no right to ever impose their male ideas of what a woman is on female people. If male people can learn to see female people as people, and not as gender they can feel in their heads then their might be hope that this whole mess can be fixed.
    Also, I always found the idea of identity to be sort of a nonsense topic. How does someone not know who they are? What is finding yourself? I've never not known who I was as a person. I am my conscious mind inhabiting my body. They are connected. If people aren't basing their identity on their physical reality, and instead on ones idealized persona, isn't that just a lie? For example, a person who is demonstrably evil can think they are a good person, but that would be a lie. Doesn't putting stock in a false reality just promote dissociation?
    I always find it odd when trans ideologs think they are being authentic by denying their physical reality in favor of a cultural, pedestalized, inverted opposite sex perspective. This idea that ones identity comes from what one would wish for themselves rather then what one knows is real about their physical reality, and personal experience seems like the prefect breeding ground for disordered thought processes. This is why, I think, gender (stereotypes and rules for the sexes) becomes more important to ones sense of self then ones physical reality. I don't see how it can be therapeutically prudent to perpetuate the disordered thought rather then deconstructing it. Wouldn't the best pathway to ceasing dysphoria inducing thoughts be radical self acceptance by way of cognitive behavioral therapy; where in you recognize when you are having a thought that is inconsistent with reality, and reduce its obsessive nature by understanding that it is a disordered thought; which culminates in a reduction of dysphoria.
    I think another part of the appeal of gender is that these rules, and stereotypes are basically the value the opposite sex puts on one another. For example, femininity has very little utility in it. Its primary about being attractive to male people, and trying to get benefits that being attractive to men brings. But again, the reality of being female has nothing to do with being feminine; however, male people can't know that looking in from the outside because they don't have the frame of reference of living in a female body. All they see are the stereotypes that they as males have placed value into, there by equating womanhood with femininity. This line of thinking is consistent with the dehumanization female people deal with when we are objectified, and can be seen in the characterization male people put forth when they LARP as woman.

    It’s purely hormonal! Which then effects the physical and psychological. We just need to thoroughly look into these effects to fully u derstand which is crazy that we haven’t and how we’re going about treating this scenario without a better understanding. But it makes perfect common sense to me consider that those hormones and their productions are a giant catalyst for biological sex. The precursor is the mass amount of edc chemicals in our foods and environment and clothes and they are finally catching up with us. Creating huge imbalances in the youth and the only help is continued help in the production of the wrong hormones and just change sex am together instead of trying to balance their hormones back out to a normal level through diet and excercise and therapy and maybe synthetic hormones. But don’t we think we should go about trying to re-establish homeostasis instead of the exact opposite because of their psychological perspective on their sex though it cooks be completely out of whack simply due to the imbalance in hormones to begin with

And you have the rise of sympathy for gay people but as is often the case there ar e lost of people who dont quite get around to there is no moreal problem inm homosexuality and instead think of it as i need to accept evryone and everything and so they cant see any difference between people that alll share a charachteristic that sets them at odss with most of society like same sex atracted persons verses a group that is taking actions to present as what they are not to ameliorate some sort of negative treatment or to achieve a set of desiered out comes. TThen add to that suddenly we have a path for peopl;e who are struggeling with the fact that they are gay that there is this path to being defended and supported all of a sudden. I get that there are other groups taht are caught up in this but this is the watershed group and the group that is the target of those the developed the technology iin volved. iT may be straight men with a fetish campaigning for oit but most medical folks involved in the work that gives us hormon therapies and surgery to change gender was driven forst and formost as an alternate stargy to adress the problem of the recalcetrant homosexual in the face of the seeiming failure opf pyschoanalysis to change the mind.

      I have spent a whole year of my life in the secure units of psychiatric hospitals for being deemed a danger to myself or to others. Most recently I got locked up for two months at the end of last year for walking barefoot across someone's front lawn. I was put inside a small metal box in the back of a van. All the staff at the hospital wore masks so I never saw any of their faces. So it was impossible to tell if they were smiling. None of the patients bothered to wear masks. No attempt was made to enforce masks. Any confrontation could only be avoided by leaving one of three rooms and going into the other in the hopes they would not follow you. There was no security on the ward. It was my fourth section. Everyone is allowed to smoke their goddamn heads off. There is no ventilation. One hospital messed up and the guy jumped out of our 5th floor window and would have died had he not broken both his legs on a protrusion on the way down. I've never met anyone "trans" in any of these hospitals. Presumably, they aren't considered "mad" for wanting to cut parts of their body off to look more like the opposite sex due to a strange obsession they have which they think will fix everything wrong with their life, their suicidal ideation is a normal thing and said by 'experts in the field' to be expected with cases of "gEnDeR BuLLsHiT dYsPhOrIa", a field that didn't exist 100 years ago and everyone got along fine with all their perfectly physically healthy bodies intact throughout their lives. Jesus. What an insult the Trans movement is to disabled people. To women who have had breast cancer. To war veterans who have to empty out a catheter due to their shrapnel mutilated genitals.
      Genuinely, there was a guy in one hospital with me back in the 90s who had been admitted for thinking he was a werewolf. How long will it be before someone like him is affirmed by 'experts in the field' so he can transition to his chosen species. People are already turning themselves into leopards and dragons through extreme plastic surgery and tattoos.
      I thought I created the Universe every time I became psychotic.
      I never thought I was God. I thought someone needed to have created God and that someone may as well be me. The signs all pointed to me being the creator. It was obvious.
      Most recently I thought I was Lucifer. I guess I wanted some variety in my psychosis. I thought Lucifer selected this Universe out of all possible universes as being THE universe and that God could not do this as it would preclude the existence of free will and without a universe in which sentient beings would evolve that could freely choose to worship him that adoration would mean nothing if it were a designed-in inevitability. I believed the universe never existed until I came along to reify it into existence, as it had previously been in a state of quantum indeterminacy prior to my sentient observation of it.
      Clearly I was cockoo-for-coca-puffs. Saying that I was a lunatic doesn't even begin to encompass how insane I was.

      @____uncompetative 2 роки тому +1

      So, having spent a life repeatedly clawing my way back to reality, to atheism, to fiscal conservatism, to a libertarian tolerance of what sane adults want to do with each other in the privacy of their own homes that does not exploit any other person or animal (the discussion of which can take place within Universities only if they are actual proper Universities in which all ideas are allowed from all sides of the debate without fear of reprisal), I was really angry to hear these two "frogs" had jumped out from the saucepan of hot water that is the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust's Gender Identity Development Service and got praise for saying that they were uncomfortable with what it had been doing for many years whilst they had been uncomplainingly employed there. How many young women have had totally unnecessary double mastectomies whilst they worked there? This is no different than Nazi concentration camp guards claiming that they didn't know what happened to the Jews that were taken off to the showers or "saved" from the showers by Dr Mengele's intervention. Presumably, all of that wasn't their department. It is a big building. Nearly five hundred people working there...
      I would have been angry at the sloth shown by this pair of dolts, but their language and therefore their thoughts are captured as they lack independent critical reasoning skills so as I listened, to give them the benefit of the doubt for being so slow to blow the whistle, they condemned themselves by defending the idea that Transition is right for some people when mutilation without reason is never right for a mentally ill person, and only masks the symptoms that need to be identified and addressed. Are they autistic? Are they suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Narcissitic Personality Disorder, Masochism, Perfectionism, Depression, and Schzoid Personality Disorder - because I was clinically diagnosed with all of those maladaptive personality disorders as a result of my underlying severe Bipolar Affective Disorder, and then my Psychiatrist found out that my Family Doctor had let me see a Psychologist for one session, because I had not made any progress with my recovery for a decade, and my Psychiatrist stopped me seeing my Psychologist, even though it was helping when nothing my Psychiatrist had recommended had ever got anywhere, and then not long after that my Psychiatrist took me off my meds and when I said I need those to stop me from going insane she said that she thought I had never been insane... this was after spending nine weeks in a secure psychiatric hospital... and I had just had a 'panic attack', when she wasn't the Psychiatrist who had judged me a danger to myself and to others at the time, as she took over my case years later, I stalled her removing my meds by asking for a second opinion, knowing that would require a waiting list, but the Professor who I then saw backed up her professional opinion, and then I was sectioned again the following month, because, surprise, surprise I went totally insane and had to be dragged out of the house by Police.
      So, the reason I am going on like this, is that it is intensely frustrating for someone who has lived the life I have and been denied the normal things most people take for granted, like liberty, and a career, and romance, and was sectioned one time as a result of my medication being removed, and became seriously suicidal on another occasion as there was a lack of medication at the pharmacy due to problems in the supply change as a result of the pandemic after I was released from my most recent two month section with barely enough pills to last the week. They had plenty. They failed to give me enough. I nearly killed myself because the depression was so severe. Utter incompetence from the NHS at every stage of my treatment. Group Therapy sessions that never do any therapy because they are waiting for a member to join who can't make it this week but definitely says they are coming next week, then sends a letter to say they are coming the next week, or kick me out for being honest when I say I have no wants and desires, interrupting me as I am about to finish my first sentence and explain that I know that this isn't a normal way to be feeling, and therefore I am here to remedy not having wants and desires, but they do not want to listen, or the nurse who pretended to be a therapist for six months before admitting we weren't actually doing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy but just having a general chat and criticised me for being "intense". Well you would be too if you only saw someone once a week for your only treatment and you had been led to believe you had to make the most out of it to make a swift recovery. I got to see my Psychologist three times. It was supposed to be fifteen sessions. Fuck the NHS and fuck these complacent apologists.
