It literally mentions his sister is like his kid, he had every right to explain and help her like a father with no mother around could. I started puberty very young (8 years old). I was terrified and confused. If my parents hadn't been there to explain what was going on one of my older brothers would have explained or asked a female relative to explain. Her now ex bf did what a caring older brother should do.

You know, I don't live in the U.S., so this might be a cultural difference, but I had sex ed in 6th grade (So right before most girls get their period, makes sense, right?) and we didn't split the class or anything like that. Every girl and every boy learned the same things, so everyone of us could have explained this stuff to the little sister. There is nothing weird about it.
