  • This is the sound of Sonovox, a device created in 1939 which attached to the throat transformed its sounds in a more metallic ones. It was very used in its first years to create effects in cartoons, also in radio, movies and music shows.

I would imagine using something like that to talk with a car horn effect too.

The 1953 Capitol Records story Sparky's Magic Baton uses the sonovox in just that way

I wish there was a sonovox app on my phone. Because I think it would be neat to sound like a talking train whistle.

    Awesome video. 😎👍
Cheer, T-Pain, Peter Frampton, Zap and Roger, Daft Punk, Bon Jovi, Joe Walsh, Peter Perry, fighter pilots and my uncle with his hole in his neck all used this inspired 1939 device!

Cher and T-Pain did NOT use this. Auto tune is vastly different from the talk box

I've been fascinated with electronic sound effects in music, film and television since I was a little kid. While the Sonovox kind of sounds like other sound processing effects, Peter Frampton, Joe Walsh (and other guitarists) used a device called a "Talk Box". Talk Boxes produce a similar sounding effect to the Sonovox, but the Talk Box sound is less metallic / less electronic sounding and uses a somewhat different method for producing the effect. The Sonovox is the older technology (late 1930's) and used small speaker transducers that were actually attached to the performer's throat to feed the source signal into the performer's mouth, producing speaking and/or singing like effects based on the source instrument and the performer's mouth shapes. Again, while similar, in my opinion the Sonovox is better for producing electro-mechanical effects (such as robot voices, steam engines and other mechanical sounds) while the Talk Box is better for making musical instruments sound like they're talking or singing.
Talk Boxes (invented in the late 1960's/early 1970's) feed the guitar's sound directly from the performers' amplifier output into a foot pedal that consists of a speaker transducer/compression driver (the sound-generating part of a horn loudspeaker) connected to a plastic tube. The other end of the plastic tube is mounted on the performer's mic stand, next to their microphone. The guitarist then places the tube in their mouth and changes their guitar's sound by changing the shape of their mouth, thereby "vocalizing" their guitar's output into a microphone. The Talk Box also has a foot switch that allows the performer to either send their amplifier's signal into the Talk Box tube or send the amplifier's output back into their amplifier's speakers.
There was an earlier version of the Talk Box called "The Bag" which was a shoulder-mounted device that also used a plastic tube to feed the signal from the performer's instrument into their mouth, but had it's own small on-board amplifier and speaker transducer/compression driver (instead of getting it's signal directly from the performer's amplifier). The Bag can be heard on Jeff Beck's version of "She's a Woman" from his "Blow by Blow" album. Because it was more bulky and cumbersome to use, most musicians that wanted this effect preferred to use the Talk Box pedal. Among other songs, the Talk Box pedal is prominently featured on Peter Frampton's classic performances of "Do You Feel Like We Do" and "Show Me the Way" from his "Frampton Comes Alive" album. Additionally, famed American sound and radio engineer Bob Heil worked with Joe Walsh to create a more high-powered version of the Talk Box for use on large stages. The "Heil Talk Box" was used on Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way".
There's also at least two other electronic techniques used to create memorable electro-mechanical speaking, singing or just plain weird sound effects in music, film and television! The earlier of the two is the ring modulator and the later of the two is the vocoder. A ring modulator is an electronic signal processing device that uses frequency mixing, where two signals are combined to yield an third output signal. The source signal (usually a voice or an instrument) is combined with and/or subtracted from a simple carrier signal (typically a sine wave or another simple waveform) to produce a truly unique and often harsh sounding effect. Two well known examples of ring modulation are the original (1960's) version of the Dalek's voices from the British science-fiction series Doctor Who and the bizarre guitar solo intro on Devo's version of "Satisfaction". In fact, Devo had an early Electro Harmonix' ring modulator pedal -- the "Frequency Analyzer" -- duct taped to their guitar body. Now THAT's punk!
A vocoder is also an electronic signal processing device which -- like the Sonovox and Talk Box -- is used to modulated input sounds based on the shape of an artist's mouth, so the sound can be made to 'speak' or 'sing', but vocoders use an entirely different methodology: Vocoders can be stand alone devices but are also often found as modules on synthesizers. Vocoders electronically combine two entirely different inputs: a musical source (often produced by the keyboard on a synthesizer equipped with a vocoder module) and a vocal microphone. The microphone captures the performer's speaking or singing voice and the vocoder then uses the performer's speaking and/or singing voice to modulate and shape the sound coming from the second / musical source. David Gilmour and Pink Floyd used a vocoder for the truly unique speaking parts in "Sheep" and "Dogs" on their "Animals" album.
As I said, I find this technology (and it's history) to be fascinating!

the sonovox lead to the talkbox. the sonovox was also used mainly on radio jingles (including the ones by pirate stations broadcasting off international waters like caroline & big l).

Also, the Sonovox was used on the old Sparky childrens recordings from Capitol in the early 1950s, Rusty In Orchestraville in 1946, etc.

Funny that no microphone was used with these old clips, must be playback 😅
