I drove a fleet cab on the west side of Manhattan, in the seventies. It was exactly like the TV show taxi. In my garage we had a dispatcher who was just like Louie, they all acted like mean tyrants in their elevated cages. If you had a regular cab, you would have to wait until the guy on the day shift came back, if you didn't drive regular, you had to wait until a free cab came in, so it was first come first serve. Consequently you always had a lot of drivers hanging around waiting for a cab, and that was where the fun was. Sometimes the waiting time was two hours. There were so many characters, actor wanna bees, starving artists, musicians, students, has beens, immigrants and career drivers like Alex. Lots of stories and shenanigans. Some of the wildest times were with my fares, you met a lot of interesting people looking for a wild time, so sometimes you would join your fare on their escapades. I didn't have a TV, and didn't watch Taxi until it was in reruns, but I was amazed at how accurately it captured those days.
I'd love to hear your stories. I grew up in a small town in New Zealand and I can only image the crazy stuff that you got to see. A beer and a chat would be amazing
I hacked in Orlando in the early '90s, and I agree with you on all counts. The only thing Taxi was missing was 30-40% of the drivers being 300lb behemoths that ruined the driver seat in every cab they ever drove. But, you're absolutely right on the garage being the center of the universe. I would always get there early and get signed in to get a better cab. It makes a difference in the tips having a nicer ride.
I can’t say it’s second to the Sammy Davis Jr/Archie Bunker kiss as just thinking about that scene makes me laugh but that moment when Jim asks about the yellow light is certainly in the top ten of the funniest moments on TV (I would also add Lucy & Ethel when they are at the factory and the conveyor belt keeps speeding up.)😂

My favorite all time TV Show. Alex: "All blueberries are blue, but not all Blueberries are Blueberries" Jim: "Ive mistaken Blueberries for Blueberries"
To me the funniest scene was from the Psychic Jim episode where Jim predicts the Grim Reaper will knock on Alex's door at at certain hour. Louie insists on protecting Alex and, when he hears the knock on the door, he ends up scaring away a girl scout selling sugar cookies. I was already laughing hysterically--and then Louie commented, "Did you see it Reiger? It was hideous!" Brilliant!
my favorite scene was in the episode of latkas cookies, where jim analyzes the cookie, it was so funny you can see danny DeVito turning off camera to laugh
Taxi, had some of the best comedic writing in TV history. The cast also delivered in all-star fashion. To this day, I would put it in the top 3 of quality sit coms.
Judd seemed to not want to mention Jeff, he talked about Andy. both were missed...Jeff was the one that brought me to the show (knowing him from Grease) and watched from first episode.
@@dr1204Judd probably didn’t want to mention Jeff because Jeff was NOT exactly let go under the best of circumstances. Jeff had serious drug problems, and there was a day when he was too high to perform, so they divided his lines for that episode among Danny and Christopher, who delivered them as well, if not better than Jeff could have, and that made the producers finally realize that Jeff was in fact expendable, so they fired him. As for Andy, he was still loved, which is probably why he stayed, even though Andy himself was not happy with the loss of creative control over his Foreign Man character that he originally created. The lesson here is: NOBODY is irreplaceable in show business, not even the most talented actor in the world who seems singularly qualified for a unique character, as Valerie Harper’s dismissal from the sitcom “Valerie,” later “The Hogan Family” proved. Furthermore, Jeff’s character was NOT even all that unique compared to Louie or Jim or even Elaine or Alex. Jeff himself even remarked once that his character was kind of generic compared to them, and that he was tired of being the butt of all the common and stereotypical struggling actor jokes.

So many number 1 shows from 1 man
Taxi didn't run long enough for me, maybe it run it's time before getting sour but i loved it, will always watch any repeat especially with Christopher Lloyd.
The driving test scene still makes me LOL. Even today. TAXI was on when I was born in 1978 so I didn't get to watch Taxi Until it came over to the UK and I didn't watch them until I was about 12 that would have been 1990.
Best TV show of all time. I have every episode. I watch it over and over, and still laugh my ass off
I wish we had shows like this on TV today. We need less violence & drama and more laughter in our daily lives !!
I hung out with Jeff's Cousin, Joey...same exact mannerisms, he's sadly passed away...
