you forgot one possible reason: conquerors such as william the conqueror wiped out multiple whole populations upon arriving in england, which is why some are recorded with very low populations in the domesday book or just left out completely.

Hey, thanks in advance for the insight. I'm just curious on how the land ownership worked in the medieval times? Nowadays you have certificate of ownership recognized by a whole country. But how did we do it back then when even many people can't even read? Thanks mate!

There would be a record of the deed. In addition, most property was taxed and there were records of the taxes. Most of those records would be kept in various British archives, sometimes the county or in the official government archives in London. I think the archivists do the research for you.

Do you specialise in Medieval British and WW2 history, or do you do other subjects? And where did you learn it all or do you do research for every video?

Hi mate, I mostly specialise in Medieval and the Second World War but i’m considering looking at different topics too. I’m a school history teacher so I’m aware of most of the videos I make. I research deeper into topics though if I need to and read up on different areas. This video for example didn’t require much research as I teach life in medieval times and so on. Thanks mate :)

But what happened to the castles of the villages?

Hi Alan, most of the deserted medieval villages didn’t have castles. At the time, castles were reserved and made for lords, barons, royalty or extremely esteemed people. The closest you’d get to a castle in a medieval village would probably be the manor house. (A larger dwelling reserved for the lord of the manor/majority landowner.) Thanks for the comment mate!

Are villages in general dying out because of industrialization?

Not in England mate. With this video however many new villages were created after the Medieval period, and new settlements arose. Infact at the moment, lots of the more rural areas are having houses built on them.

    Great video!
But what about demographic decline during the Late Medieval Ages, wars and the Enclosure Movement? Or are these not that relevant?

Im willing to agree that its 'barbaric' to have poor peoples homes torn down to make way for rich peoples homes but its not like thats not going on literally all the time. Like right now in my urban U.S. neighborhood this is occurring regularly.

The plague was a big reason many places was abandoned.

Are those structures still there just buried under the ground from where they have sunken in overtime?

I think a lot of them were built with predominantly wood which has rotted away. If they had stone foundations, then the foundations will still be there. So I don’t think the whole dwelling has sunk, I think it is more likely that it has fallen down/rotted away.
