The Thing with NBA is players who are superstars in Europe back then had to warm the bench because traditionaly US coaches didnt trust Euro players. So one had to lose 2-3 years before he establishes himself as a starter. Im glad that attitude has changed lately so we see players drafted from Europe as starters right away. Not everyone from Yugoslavia was eager to go from hero to zero. Bodiroga was an European champion and at age 25 to go in US and start as a rookie and knows that he will be disrespected and also they werent offering him the money he was getting playing in Europe. Lots of factors were in play with Bodiroga. I still think he would have been an All Star at least once easily. It was never meant to be.

The first time he was well held by Andrew Vlahov (4 time Olympian, played at Stamford) and he committed his 5th foul on a charge (5 fouls in international basketball means fouling out) enabling us to win. The second time the officials called it tighter to the extent where Vlahov got in foul trouble and Oscar did what he liked.

Funny thing about Gurovic guy: everyone in the team were pissing him off about some interview that Reggie “gave” saying that he has no idea who is Milan Gurovic. I am Serbian and moved to the US in 1998- Vlade and Peja were my idols, legends, everything in one (cried every year kings would get kicked out of the playoffs). I remember this game like it was yesterday and two/ three days later we drove to Indianapolis to watch that (another epic) final against Argentina. We turned Indianapolis into Belgrade that afternoon.
I was there too. My Dad was a journalist for the Borba sports newspaper in Belgrade. I remember holding onto the large Yugoslav flag down the main street.

As a Greek myself, it is almost laughable how many Greek-themed elements are on this video. Apart from the Greek commentary which is already been mentioned by a few comments, we have: -The 1998 World Championships which took place in Greece -The 1995 EuroBasket which was also held in Greece -The two biggest stars of that Yugoslav team had essentially written history by playing for Greek clubs. Dejan Bodiroga is still regarded one of the greatest players to play for Panathinaikos Athens and he was a key figure to two Euroleague victories in 2000 at Thessaloniki and especially in 2002 in Bologna against a powerful home team of Kinder featuring among others Manu Ginobili. Whereas Peja Stojakovic was the absolut king of PAOK Thessaloniki from 1993 until he flew to the States in 1998. He's especially known for an amazing killer 3-point buzzer against Olympiacos Piraeus in the deciding semi-final leg for the '98 Greek Championships. He's acquired full Greek citizenship from early age, he's married to a former Greek model and he still considers himself as a "honorary Thessaloniki citizen". -Another two Serbian players of that squad would go on and play for Panathinaikos winning many titles, including a famous treble (Greek Championships, Greek Cup and Euroleague) in 2007. Dejan Tomasevic and Milos Vujanic. -And finally, the most little known fact, one of this USA squad played again for Panathinaikos. From 1990 until '92, Antonio Davis decided to come to Europe and Greece right after being drafted by the Pacers and he showed some glimpses of his talent before having a stint at Milan and kicking off his NBA career.

Even though I'm American I'm happy for the Yugoslavians here. Nobody in the U.S. would remember this game today or even care about it back then if the Americans had won. We hardly even care about the Olympics let alone the FIBA World Cup. But in Serbia & Montenegro people still talk about this game with pride because it gave them a moment of joy and national unity after ten very difficult years for their people. They earned this one.

Yugoslavian team was preparing for 1992 Olympics. When they found out they weren't allowed to participate, they were devastated. Considering 1994 World Cup was supposed to be hosted in Belgrade, 1995 Eurobasket has a special place in history as a triumphant comeback. Funny thing is that it almost didn't happen as Bulgaria almost shocked them in qualifiers. Belgrade Arena was eventually built and hosted 2005 Eurobasket, which was disaster for hosts. Team in disarray lost to young France.

The USA team wasn't bad at all as you try to make it look like. Andre Miller was in the first rookie team some years prior to 2002 and the assist leader in 2002. Reggie Miller was an older player but still in the NBA and had a decent ppg in 2001 and 2002 season, one of the best shooters of all time. Paul Pierce is a HoF now, back in 2001 and 2002 he was having 26ppg seasons. Jermaine O'Neal was the most improved player in 2002 and an All Star player, he had an average of 20ppg in 2001-2002 and 2002-2003. Antonio Davis was a veteran with 14ppg in those two seasons when the World Championship was played 2001-2002. Ben Wallace was one of the best defensive players of his generation, won the Defensive player of the year 2002 and was also the block and rebound leader that same year, the man is basically a good HoF potential. Baron Davis was having an 18 and 17 ppg season in 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 and he had his prime stats just a year after that in the 2003-2004 season, a good player. This team went up against Stojakovic that had a 21ppg and 19ppg in the 2 season around this tournament and Divac who had an 11ppg seasons more or less. On paper the USA team should have still won a medal.
True. Until their first loss against Argentina in the tournament, team USA was sweeping all the teams they had played against. However, none of those teams were Firtst Class world teams, the first First Class world team they faced, Argentina, became their first loss, and the second First Class world team they faced, became their second loss. Some could argue that Russia and Germany were good, and while they are good today, back then Russia was "we used to be the Soviet Union but now we suck" and Germany was "The Nowitzki show, and some other dudes." In fact, the third First Class World team they faced in the tournamnet, Spain, also defeated team USA. So Team USA was good, it just wasn't First Class good.

I saw a picture of the current NBA players like Jokic, Doncic, Nurkic, Dragic, Zubac, Marjanovic, and others from the former Yugoslav countries hanging out with each other in the bubble a few days ago, and I really can't help but think... If Yugoslavia didn't break up, the team would've been scary and a serious contender for a gold medal along with USA.
Oh yes I agree I would love to see a team of all the former Countries that used to be part of Yugoslavia. This 2024 USA team would have a problem with a team made up of all those players especially up front with centers like Jokic Nuric, etc on the frontline Luka at point guard. You would have a team that has at least 9-10 NBA players and fill the other 2-3 spots with either G League players or players from overseas. It will be interesting to see if this year’s team USA wins gold or not. Team Canada in the first exhibition game gave them some trouble and got off to a big lead they have 10 out of 12 players on their roster as NBA players. A team that deep from players from Croatia Serbia Slovenia etc all on one team would definitely have a great chance at beating USA.
Actually they would have to focus more on Fred Weiss, there is a lot to say about him, picked by the Knicks, had some problems in the US (delayed flights if I remember well), got dunked over by Vince and it ruined his reputation even more. The Knicks never called him to join their roster, he did a pretty decent career in Europe (Spain mostly) but this ruined NBA career still had a big impact on his life, everybody still telling him about that poster dunk while he achieved nice things on the ither hand that nobody congratulated him about. He also had a handicaped kid, he attempted suicide by taking sleeping pills before driving to nowhere. But now it seems like he bounced back, work on a famous radio station in France. But yeah, definitely a really long and disturbing story to tell about him.

I've followed Rewind series for some time now, but as a Serbian this was the first topic that was about something related to my country. You did a great job explaining. Also, quite an interesting timing for this video to drop, since the 2019 FIBA World Cup is just about to start, and the Team USA is once again left with its 4th strongest team, while Serbia is one of its main contenders. Oddly enough, Yugoslavia's best 2 players were passing center Divac and shooter Stojakovic, while the current Serbia's main 2 players are passing center Jokic and shooter Bogdanovic. Also, tiny correction: Captions at 9:07: it's "Slovenian", not "Slavonian", he said it right, but CC didn't spell it good. Slavonia is a region in Croatia, Slovenia is a former Yugoslav Republic (and later an independent country).

Its hard to explain what makes Serbs so good in sports. Its a small country of 6-7 million people only, and yet successful and often dominant in pretty much every collective sport that is played around here. At some years Serbia was European champion simultaneously in basketball, volleyball, water polo, in other years both men and women's national team would be champions of Europe in some sports, youth teams winning euro and world cups in football, basketball, volleyball, long history of success in handball although lately that sport is in decline, and all that in conditions of poverty and total lack of financing for sports.Even in individual sports we get people like Djokovic in tennis, swimmers, shooters etc. What can be the reason? Its genetically tall people, like dutch, or nordic people, but not anemic from cold climate. Its passionate people similar to mediteranean nations Italy, Spain, Greece, but much taller and stronger on average. There is strong tribal, collective spirit, unlike modern artificial nations, and more alike to old tribes and people of europe from barbarian times and collective identity. There is huge love of sports, bad living conditions where sport is often way to progress in life, spite and pride and desire to win, but still this all cant explain it.

Also the ref who call the foul on Scola was behind Vlade Divac so he didn't has a clear look on the play but decided to call it anyways
As a rule, I always root for upsets in international basketball. I don't think that makes you a bad American. I just recognize that even with a lesser roster, we're still prohibitive favorites, and seeing somebody else win is a better outcome.

Roflcopter Ausdertiefe It's not that. First the World Championship was never as important to the US as the Olympics are, for all other nations the importance is reversed. So usually the US fields better teams to the Olympics. Second, while the Olympic teams always featured big stars, the World Championship teams tended to be made up of up and coming young talent mixed with vets who while great weren't really the level of players who would star on the Olympic Dream Team. That's what happened in '94. The result was that yes while the other teams didn't cower to these yet to be legends the US still obliterated everyone. So much so that they had to stop starting Shaq because the media thought the US was being too merciless. See that's the thing, the World Championship was seen as a chance for new stars to shine by taking care of business and still dominating. So it's not that Shaq and Kobe and VC were unamerican in 2002, it's that they thought the new crop of players would still handle the other teams with ease. They didn't expect guys like Davis, Pierce, and Jermaine O' Neal not to rise to the challenge.
@@hoebertrabeck1621 I completly understand those who don't want to play. I've followed NBA closely for the past 4-5 seasons. I watch games daily and what I've realized is that the season for the superstars is incredibly demanding. Playing 35+ minutes per game and sometimes 40+ minutes for 82 games in the regular season and than playoff starts where every game takes double or triple the amount of energy comapred to regular season. They constantly have the ball,constantly being defended the hardest,constantly thinking what to do on the court specially on offense. Not to mention the media attention they get. The millions they get are great but NBA season can be draining mentally and physically. So I complelty understand when they want to take the summer for them seleves,work on their body and just get ready for the season in every way possible. Play once or twice but that's about it.

Some players don't want to risk championship contention in the nba by injuring themselves in a tournament that just isn't that important, plus all the money they would lose because of such an injury. Rest assured if even a handful of the Top 25 NBA players came to play they would coast to victory. Also, not every great soccer player plays in every single tournament. You have people absent from Euros or Copa, etc.
Just imagine the players from today's Serbia, Croatia, BiH, Montenegro, Macedonia and Sovenia playing together now as a national team like during the days of Yugoslavia - almost unstoppable!!!

The 2002-2004 Argentina national team is one of the greatest basketball teams ever assembled in international competitions. Shame they lost unbelievably to Yugoslavia (also a great team) in the WC Finals. They got their revenge in Athens 2004, tho.

He is actually Greek sportscasting legend Dimitris Hadjigeorgiou and this was a Greek national TV's broadcast. The reason he is so happy and the actual reason Serbians were so into that, was that US had bombed Serbia in 1998 and they had to get back some way. It is to interesting to me that Americans consider "pro" players only those who make millions in NBA. Here in Czech republic (or many European countries for that matter), we consider a pro player that person who plays on regular basis and is in any kind of league (and most likely take some money from it too, but not that much)

Even with a team like that, the 2002 USA team was dominant up until the Argentina game. They won the first round games by scoring at least 100 points in every single game (a feat not that easy to accomplish in the defensive-style rules of FIBA basketball) and were making quick work of every other team in the second round. Then the Argentina game happened and it basically caused everything to crumble.

Not everyone from Yugoslavia was eager to go from hero to zero. Bodiroga was an European champion and at age 25 to go in US and start as a rookie and knows that he will be disrespected and also they werent offering him the money he was getting playing in Europe.
Lots of factors were in play with Bodiroga. I still think he would have been an All Star at least once easily. It was never meant to be.

I am Serbian and moved to the US in 1998- Vlade and Peja were my idols, legends, everything in one (cried every year kings would get kicked out of the playoffs). I remember this game like it was yesterday and two/ three days later we drove to Indianapolis to watch that (another epic) final against Argentina. We turned Indianapolis into Belgrade that afternoon.

As a Greek myself, it is almost laughable how many Greek-themed elements are on this video. Apart from the Greek commentary which is already been mentioned by a few comments, we have:
-The 1998 World Championships which took place in Greece
-The 1995 EuroBasket which was also held in Greece
-The two biggest stars of that Yugoslav team had essentially written history by playing for Greek clubs. Dejan Bodiroga is still regarded one of the greatest players to play for Panathinaikos Athens and he was a key figure to two Euroleague victories in 2000 at Thessaloniki and especially in 2002 in Bologna against a powerful home team of Kinder featuring among others Manu Ginobili. Whereas Peja Stojakovic was the absolut king of PAOK Thessaloniki from 1993 until he flew to the States in 1998. He's especially known for an amazing killer 3-point buzzer against Olympiacos Piraeus in the deciding semi-final leg for the '98 Greek Championships. He's acquired full Greek citizenship from early age, he's married to a former Greek model and he still considers himself as a "honorary Thessaloniki citizen".
-Another two Serbian players of that squad would go on and play for Panathinaikos winning many titles, including a famous treble (Greek Championships, Greek Cup and Euroleague) in 2007. Dejan Tomasevic and Milos Vujanic.
-And finally, the most little known fact, one of this USA squad played again for Panathinaikos. From 1990 until '92, Antonio Davis decided to come to Europe and Greece right after being drafted by the Pacers and he showed some glimpses of his talent before having a stint at Milan and kicking off his NBA career.

Even though I'm American I'm happy for the Yugoslavians here. Nobody in the U.S. would remember this game today or even care about it back then if the Americans had won. We hardly even care about the Olympics let alone the FIBA World Cup. But in Serbia & Montenegro people still talk about this game with pride because it gave them a moment of joy and national unity after ten very difficult years for their people. They earned this one.

Yugoslavian team was preparing for 1992 Olympics. When they found out they weren't allowed to participate, they were devastated.
Considering 1994 World Cup was supposed to be hosted in Belgrade, 1995 Eurobasket has a special place in history as a triumphant comeback. Funny thing is that it almost didn't happen as Bulgaria almost shocked them in qualifiers. Belgrade Arena was eventually built and hosted 2005 Eurobasket, which was disaster for hosts. Team in disarray lost to young France.

Nah, Nowitzki won the MVP fair and square. Considering everyone else in Germany wasn't that good, he basically led Germany to a third place finish by himself.

Andre Miller was in the first rookie team some years prior to 2002 and the assist leader in 2002.
Reggie Miller was an older player but still in the NBA and had a decent ppg in 2001 and 2002 season, one of the best shooters of all time.
Paul Pierce is a HoF now, back in 2001 and 2002 he was having 26ppg seasons.
Jermaine O'Neal was the most improved player in 2002 and an All Star player, he had an average of 20ppg in 2001-2002 and 2002-2003.
Antonio Davis was a veteran with 14ppg in those two seasons when the World Championship was played 2001-2002.
Ben Wallace was one of the best defensive players of his generation, won the Defensive player of the year 2002 and was also the block and rebound leader that same year, the man is basically a good HoF potential.
Baron Davis was having an 18 and 17 ppg season in 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 and he had his prime stats just a year after that in the 2003-2004 season, a good player.
This team went up against Stojakovic that had a 21ppg and 19ppg in the 2 season around this tournament and Divac who had an 11ppg seasons more or less.
On paper the USA team should have still won a medal.
True. Until their first loss against Argentina in the tournament, team USA was sweeping all the teams they had played against. However, none of those teams were Firtst Class world teams, the first First Class world team they faced, Argentina, became their first loss, and the second First Class world team they faced, became their second loss. Some could argue that Russia and Germany were good, and while they are good today, back then Russia was "we used to be the Soviet Union but now we suck" and Germany was "The Nowitzki show, and some other dudes." In fact, the third First Class World team they faced in the tournamnet, Spain, also defeated team USA. So Team USA was good, it just wasn't First Class good.

Oh yes I agree I would love to see a team of all the former Countries that used to be part of Yugoslavia. This 2024 USA team would have a problem with a team made up of all those players especially up front with centers like Jokic Nuric, etc on the frontline Luka at point guard. You would have a team that has at least 9-10 NBA players and fill the other 2-3 spots with either G League players or players from overseas. It will be interesting to see if this year’s team USA wins gold or not. Team Canada in the first exhibition game gave them some trouble and got off to a big lead they have 10 out of 12 players on their roster as NBA players. A team that deep from players from Croatia Serbia Slovenia etc all on one team would definitely have a great chance at beating USA.

Actually they would have to focus more on Fred Weiss, there is a lot to say about him, picked by the Knicks, had some problems in the US (delayed flights if I remember well), got dunked over by Vince and it ruined his reputation even more. The Knicks never called him to join their roster, he did a pretty decent career in Europe (Spain mostly) but this ruined NBA career still had a big impact on his life, everybody still telling him about that poster dunk while he achieved nice things on the ither hand that nobody congratulated him about. He also had a handicaped kid, he attempted suicide by taking sleeping pills before driving to nowhere.
But now it seems like he bounced back, work on a famous radio station in France. But yeah, definitely a really long and disturbing story to tell about him.

I've followed Rewind series for some time now, but as a Serbian this was the first topic that was about something related to my country. You did a great job explaining. Also, quite an interesting timing for this video to drop, since the 2019 FIBA World Cup is just about to start, and the Team USA is once again left with its 4th strongest team, while Serbia is one of its main contenders. Oddly enough, Yugoslavia's best 2 players were passing center Divac and shooter Stojakovic, while the current Serbia's main 2 players are passing center Jokic and shooter Bogdanovic.

Its hard to explain what makes Serbs so good in sports. Its a small country of 6-7 million people only, and yet successful and often dominant in pretty much every collective sport that is played around here. At some years Serbia was European champion simultaneously in basketball, volleyball, water polo, in other years both men and women's national team would be champions of Europe in some sports, youth teams winning euro and world cups in football, basketball, volleyball, long history of success in handball although lately that sport is in decline, and all that in conditions of poverty and total lack of financing for sports.Even in individual sports we get people like Djokovic in tennis, swimmers, shooters etc. What can be the reason? Its genetically tall people, like dutch, or nordic people, but not anemic from cold climate. Its passionate people similar to mediteranean nations Italy, Spain, Greece, but much taller and stronger on average. There is strong tribal, collective spirit, unlike modern artificial nations, and more alike to old tribes and people of europe from barbarian times and collective identity. There is huge love of sports, bad living conditions where sport is often way to progress in life, spite and pride and desire to win, but still this all cant explain it.

Also the ref who call the foul on Scola was behind Vlade Divac so he didn't has a clear look on the play but decided to call it anyways
As a rule, I always root for upsets in international basketball. I don't think that makes you a bad American. I just recognize that even with a lesser roster, we're still prohibitive favorites, and seeing somebody else win is a better outcome.

Roflcopter Ausdertiefe It's not that. First the World Championship was never as important to the US as the Olympics are, for all other nations the importance is reversed. So usually the US fields better teams to the Olympics. Second, while the Olympic teams always featured big stars, the World Championship teams tended to be made up of up and coming young talent mixed with vets who while great weren't really the level of players who would star on the Olympic Dream Team. That's what happened in '94. The result was that yes while the other teams didn't cower to these yet to be legends the US still obliterated everyone. So much so that they had to stop starting Shaq because the media thought the US was being too merciless. See that's the thing, the World Championship was seen as a chance for new stars to shine by taking care of business and still dominating. So it's not that Shaq and Kobe and VC were unamerican in 2002, it's that they thought the new crop of players would still handle the other teams with ease. They didn't expect guys like Davis, Pierce, and Jermaine O' Neal not to rise to the challenge.
@@hoebertrabeck1621 I completly understand those who don't want to play. I've followed NBA closely for the past 4-5 seasons. I watch games daily and what I've realized is that the season for the superstars is incredibly demanding. Playing 35+ minutes per game and sometimes 40+ minutes for 82 games in the regular season and than playoff starts where every game takes double or triple the amount of energy comapred to regular season. They constantly have the ball,constantly being defended the hardest,constantly thinking what to do on the court specially on offense. Not to mention the media attention they get. The millions they get are great but NBA season can be draining mentally and physically. So I complelty understand when they want to take the summer for them seleves,work on their body and just get ready for the season in every way possible. Play once or twice but that's about it.

@@hoebertrabeck1621 There is not much to get. The NBA season is long, 82 games + playoffs. About 7 months. Some players don't want to risk championship contention in the nba by injuring themselves in a tournament that just isn't that important, plus all the money they would lose because of such an injury. Rest assured if even a handful of the Top 25 NBA players came to play they would coast to victory. Also, not every great soccer player plays in every single tournament. You have people absent from Euros or Copa, etc.
Just imagine the players from today's Serbia, Croatia, BiH, Montenegro, Macedonia and Sovenia playing together now as a national team like during the days of Yugoslavia - almost unstoppable!!!
Do one for one of the most legendary finals in Euroleague history in '92 when the Serbian "Partizan" played against Spanish "Juventud". Its great because it also (like this video) would have a lot of background since Partizan didnt play in Serbia the entire season since the war ha begun

Great video... I've watched the game at 3 AM in the morning and then went on celebrating on the city's central square at 5 AM... I was young, enthusiastic about basketball and had my second baby born a couple of months before... I truly had the sense of living history.
The 2002-2004 Argentina national team is one of the greatest basketball teams ever assembled in international competitions.
Shame they lost unbelievably to Yugoslavia (also a great team) in the WC Finals.

You probably thought the announcer in the end is Serbian, celebrating the win of his team... He is actually Greek sportscasting legend Dimitris Hadjigeorgiou and this was a Greek national TV's broadcast. The reason he is so happy and the actual reason Serbians were so into that, was that US had bombed Serbia in 1998 and they had to get back some way. Sad to get politics in the way, but that's the way it is...

It is to interesting to me that Americans consider "pro" players only those who make millions in NBA. Here in Czech republic (or many European countries for that matter), we consider a pro player that person who plays on regular basis and is in any kind of league (and most likely take some money from it too, but not that much)

Even with a team like that, the 2002 USA team was dominant up until the Argentina game. They won the first round games by scoring at least 100 points in every single game (a feat not that easy to accomplish in the defensive-style rules of FIBA basketball) and were making quick work of every other team in the second round. Then the Argentina game happened and it basically caused everything to crumble.
