    My first trailer was up at ~45kg. My second was around 40. At that point I decided that I'd better find out how light I could build a bike camper, so I went all out, using the technologies that I knew how to build with. Sakari Hohlma had built one that was 20kg. I knew I couldn't match that. With an aluminum tube frame and structure, steel hitch, 20 inch wheels, smaller size, and as light as I could build, the third trailer came in at 34kg. Still too heavy. Got rid of many features, went to corrugated pvc floor from wood, went to polycarbonate windows, no suspension, no structure on certain parts, no kitchen, no closet or cabinets (just a shelf), got down to 28kg. Removing weight is the hardest part of building a bicycle camper. You did well. Now rebuild lighter. Look for every place you can cut weight. Keep going.

    I assume that you knew Matilda would be heavy, but you wanted to make her tough, reliable, well outfitted and built to a high standard, so it was a case of, she'll weigh what she weighs!
    I especially liked your full suspension, which ensures that Matilda is less stressed on her travels and your companion has a pleasant ride.
    The 32mm closed cell foam insulation is simply outstanding, and in conjunction with the 10mm twin wall polycarbonate sheets, provides phenomenal levels of insulation.
    The vented locker is a very clever idea, in fact the entirety of Matilda is very cleverly thought out!
    Polycarbonate is respected for its strength, which is why jet fighters use it for their canopies, suffice to say that Matilda is one tiugh cookie!
    Superbly over engineered to give her Crew safety and security with reliability, you've engineered out potential areas of weakness from the beginning.
    I couldn't quite make out the name of your insulation, could you please confirm it?
    I know of no other bicycle camper built so strongly, Matilda certainly is a unique compact travel cabin.
    If you're ever in. London, I'll happily buy you both a meal.

    Nice build. I’m following all bike camper builds. So I seen all of these that are posted on UA-cam. Great job completing a great project. Lots of camping ahead for you. However it is just way too heavy to pull around using a peddle bike. Perhaps an electric motor kit on front hub as well as a gas powered engine to utilize both power applications. You can even carry extra batteries. You will need both gas and electric motors to pull anything using a bike over 300lbs. Many camper trailers for bikes are around 50 to 100 lbs max weight. They are made very light for a reason. In my opinion this needs a motorcycle to hook up to it. Lots of great stuff with plenty of conveniences. Great job. And congrats! Keep em coming!

    192 kilograms = 423 lbs = crazy heavy. Maybe make is electric powered assist so the trailer can actually help push itself.

  • @bryanswenson1452
    @bryanswenson1452 5 років тому +10

    You need to purchase one of those motorized bicycle kits. I recommend the 80cc. That would make your camping experience a joy and you could really travel.

    • @-mhatayas-6158
      @-mhatayas-6158 4 роки тому +4

      I recommend an electric bike kit (cyclone 3000w) which had more tourqe than a gas motor and battery can be recharge by his solar panel

    • @justinwhite4057
      @justinwhite4057 4 роки тому +1

      That would be awesome but he'd need to also add some custom gas jug carriers somewhere either on his bike or inside the camper so he didn't run out in the middle of the forest on a steep climb or something. At least that's what I'd do.

    • @moteroargentino7944
      @moteroargentino7944 3 роки тому +1

      At that point ha may just buy a small motorcycle as well. An electric kit just big enough to compensate for the extra weight of the trailer would be ideal in my opinion. Then he can enjoy cycling and the comfort of his camper.

    It will be quite an effort to pull Matilda around, but it looks so nice and cozy inside! I would be for sure envying you during rainy night in a bike trip!
    I'm curious about cycling in strong winds with it!
    And what about Joe? Where is his seat for long or speed runs? You should present him!

    • @AlexxRock
      @AlexxRock  5 років тому

      Hey ho Mariano! Really nice words,thank you.
      Yea is definitely very cozy and safe.In terms of bad weather: yap is a proper thank ;) , nothing gets in. In terms of the effort: on the flat&downhill is totally fine, just like a normal bike. Uphill.......well..... 1gear all the way. 😂😂 But I definitely can manage. In regards of Joe: if is a very busy road whit cars I keep him on the inside but if is a quiet road, he walks sidebyside. I don’t pedal to fast and also I make regular breaks for the sake of the both of us 😂😂. I will definitely make a video about Joe, I’m cooking that as we speak.
      Stick around bud, I will be posting weekly. 🤞🤘

    I just tow a trailer with the tent and stuff in. I did think of one of those campers and even got the designs, but working out the weight, put me off. My bike 20kg, the trailer and stuff in it 40kg, me 95 kg, = 155 kg. I could lose weight of course. Maybe more cycling when the weather isn't so hot. I live in northern England, have Scottish blood, we don't do well in the heat. Right now it's 20c - about 8c over what I'm used to in most summers.
