🌊 Day 147 Ocean Swim - A Lesson in Purpose from a Retired Fire Marshal - Ocean Swim Series

🌊 Today, I played hooky (took the day off) from work to attend a meeting of the California Fire Chiefs association’s fire prevention group. I’m no fireman. I was invited to observe the meeting before I make a presentation to this same group in a few months on strategies for using artificial intelligence in the field of fire prevention. I was there to observe the group, take notes and plan my presentation to be relevant to the needs of fire inspection, prevention and code enforcement. I sat in the back of the room and was initially the only person not in uniform. I felt a little out of place.
Eventually, another man in civilian clothes came into the room and sat at the back next to me. He introduced himself as Steve, a retired fire marshal from a nearby city. “You retired?” Steve asked me, noting my civilian clothes. “In eight months” I answered. “What’s it like?” I asked. Steve responding to tell me about all the fire department related activities he still participates in, the fire-related volunteer groups he’s engaged with, as well as his plans to offer his services as a consultant to various fire departments in Orange County. Clearly, Steve’s retirement doesn’t mean that Steve has stopped working, but that he has simply been released from the necessity of doing a job he clearly loves, to instead simply continue doing what he loves on his own terms. An interesting lesson learned. A role model of sorts. (KB)
