Rob Zombie's The Munsters is....... Fill in the blank Watch last weeks NC on The Frighteners - ua-cam.com/video/WI5328BWYXQ/v-deo.html Follow us on Twitch - www.twitch.tv/channelawesome
The thing I've learned about Rob Zombie is. He does not care. Not that he doesn't care about what he's making, no. He shows he is passionate about his projects. But he doesn't care if its successful or not. He doesn't care if its hated or loved. He just makes what he wants how he wants it.
Fun Fact: Rob Zombie shot the film with a heightened color scheme. "I noticed when the actors were in their makeup and they were just walking around, getting lunch or whatever, they looked like cartoon characters come to life. They were just so insanely colorful. I had to light the movie in the same fashion. It really seemed at all times like a live action cartoon, which was really exciting."
Oddly enough, alot of black and white shows sets, costumes and make-up were done in loud outrageous colours so they would show up better, probably why this looks good in black and white
The thing about the show was that the joke was (at least when it began) that they're an almost perfect recreation of a stereotypical suburban family that JUST SO HAPPENED to be monsters (mostly) . Whereas the joke in the Adams family is more that they're nothing like a stereotypical suburban family, in that their happy normal is dark and macabre
In the show, Eddie actually builds a tin can robot like that for a science project with the help of his grandpa, so it's neat he played one for the cameo.
Another cool fact about this interesting movie: The character of Zombo on the TV program Herman was watching was featured in the original series. Eddie idolized Zombo and won a contest that allowed him to visit the set of the show. He became very upset when he discovered Zombo was just an actor in make-up. And, in the fashion of 1950s-60s TV. Eddie realized his dad was who he should be idolizing, not Zombo
and Zombo was played by the same guy playing Herman (in the movie idk about the original show), so when he says hes hotter than Zombo, hes saying hes....hotter than himself.
Executive Meddling: Universal wouldn't let the movie be Deliberately Monochrome to match the look of the original TV series - so other than the short black and white sequences he was allowed, Rob Zombie went for "the opposite of black and white" by using bright, oversaturated colors. While it didn't affect the direction of the film as much, Grandpa/The Count also couldn't be shown smoking a cigar as he often does in the original series.
That’s due to new smoking rules, where from this point onwards, only R-rated or NC-17 movies can show characters smoking. I certainly don’t miss those “good old days” where people smoked more than chimneys, even in “family” movies. I don’t smoke myself, which I am very proud of.😊
To be fair to Universal 1440, their Chucky movies are actually legitimately good. Especially since they were written and directed by the original series creator, Don Mancini AND did a fair deal of interesting things with the series. Hell, their success even helped lead to the Chucky TV series on Syfy AND USA.
@Gavin Cox I'd put it second best (A-) of the entire series. Only Bride (A-) is better, overall. Jennifer Tilly's first outing as Tiffany was just...perfect, so much so that it overwrites how much the teen lovers subplot...kind of bites.

Cult of Chucky is easily the best movie made by this film company but the people directing Chucky are really good at making Chucky films so all credit goes to them
I love Chucky, but sinking millions of dollars to make another theatrical release, when Seed of Chucky saw less of a return than Bride, and the whole series attracting fewer and fewer people was just not a sound investment. Bride was the biggest uptick, doubling 3's return, but it just wasn't going to be good for a big studio demanding big money and hoping to make big returns. It's a niche audience, which is typically better served by straight-to-video anyway.
Another cool fact from this film is: Herman's outfit (shirt with baggy sleeves, fur vest with visible stitches and dark, tight pants) on his first date with Lily mimics the artwork for the ubiquitous "seven-foot monster" ads in 1960s comic books, which advertised a poster of Frankenstein's monster drawn by MAD magazine and Topps trading card artist Jack Davis.
I loved this movie. I've seen all of Rob Zombie's movies and this is by far my favorite. As everyone knows, he's a genuine fan of The Munsters and it shows.
Honestly i think this film was just to make people laugh and give you fun moments to look at it's not trying to be this big serious film, it knows what it wants to do and it knows who it's general audience is which i think it nails.
A villain intro song that was so unexpectedly popular that Marvel had to pump out last minuet Agatha merch using a cropped out image from the 60’s episode just to make bank off of it
20:13 Car 54 Where Are You was a show that both Fred Gwen and Al Lewis were in. They both then went on to play Herman and Grandpa Munster in the original TV show. So, that's the connection.
Both actors did marvelously in each show! For their dynamic, I think that "The Presidential Itch" (Car 54) and "Don't Bank on Herman" (The Munsters) were particularly fine examples.
This is how I felt as well. I haven't seen the Munsters since I was a kid watching Nick at Nite but it did kind of take me back to staying up late watching it and getting a good chuckle out of it. Meh, I give it a 2.5/5
I got stuff to say too. I love the costumes and set designs, it's so colorful and odd it helps the movie really stand out. And after watching it, my sister said something that made this really click in my head. "When my nephew's older, he's gonna love this movie". This is a great movie to ease little kids into horror. Like you said, it's an 80's pg. There's enough scary stuff to give the kids a jump, but enough jokes to calm them back down.
Gotta agree with that Butch Patrick troll-cameo bit: It's got the same vibes as that invisible man who joins the X Force in Deadpool 2, only to be revealed at the moment of his death when he becomes visible that he was played by Brad Pitt the whole time.
I love how NC started reviewing entire movie series. It’s a nice change of pace. Here are some series I’d love to see reviewed this way: Madagascar, Ice Age, Toy Story, Spy Kids*, The Santa Clause*, Cars, Star Wars original trilogy and prequel trilogy, and Despicable me. *(Yes, I am aware that he’s talk about a movie from this series in the past, but I still think they warrant mentioning. I mean if he can review a movie for Disneycember and for NC and vice versa, ha can do this too.)
Sadly this is the first Rob Zombie's movie to not be rated R. Although now i kind of wonder what a rated R version of the Munsters would be like probably would have a lot of Grandpa trying to cut off people's head's with a chainsaw and feeding them their own blood
Honestly I think an R rated Munsters could work whilst keeping it wholesome. make Herman look really grotesque and have him keep the same personality and obliviousness for example
NBC and Bryan Fuller actually attempted a dark and edgy Munsters series about a decade ago. Like, they were supposed to be actual murderous monsters in it. It was called “Mockingbird Lane” and starred Jerry O’Connell as Herman, Portia de Rossi as Lily, and Eddie Izzard as Grandpa. It got a pilot, but never went anywhere.
I grew up watching the Munsters with my grandparents in reruns. This was a wonderful, mostly faithful adaptation of the original show, and I enjoyed how carefully the actors studied and reproduced the original characters mannerisms and voices. This is one of the few times I held a smile for so long since Covid hit.
Oh, this is gonna hurt. Also Doug please do Silver Bullet for your Stephen King Review. It's Gary Busey fighting a Werewolf with a kid on a suped up Wheelchair. TACKLE THIS.
In the ending review how Doug mentions about the strange choices standing out than just paint-by-the-numbers, it’s exactly how I feel about Rob Zombie now as I’ve grown with his film work. Even if some of his movies are a miss, I’d prefer to have a miss in an interesting way than having a cold blockbuster where the actors perform as bland as heck for the sake of “realism,” or just any Hollywood production nowadays.
"Car 54 Where are You" I really wished that line wasn't followed up by a cartoony spit sound effect. It ruined the fun of an easter egg. For those that aren't familiar with the reference, the original Herman (Fred Gwynne), and Grandpa (Al Lewis) were both in a show called Car 54.
The major difference between The Addams Family and The Munsters was, while both were spooky, The Addams Family were spooky acting and looking, being odd and weird, while The Munsters were spooky looking, but were otherwise a completely wholesome family. They didn't act spooky at all.
Did you know that Dragula was the name of the race car in the movie where they inherit a castle in Britain, so I think that Rob Zombie made the movie after his song Return of Dragula as he's most likely a Munsters fan because of the two Munsters connections, and Eddie Munster's actor is one of the morticians
Honestly what's really cool about the teaser trailer of this film is, The teaser trailer is a shot-by-shot remake of the The Munsters (1964) title sequence.
Rob Zombie was a poor choice to make this movie happen. Tim Burton should have been picked to make this movie as he wanted to make. I've heard a lot of people did not like this movie at all
Honestly i will say this whenever you here Rob Zombie is going to make a new film the one thing you can't say is your not interested with how the film will be when you watch it.
"If you have a TV or a monitor that allows you to watch it that way, definitely do it. It does look better." I did and I watched the rest of the review this way because it does look better.
Dude Cult of Chucky was a legit horror movie where the original creator was given full control of his IP 1440's 1 and only good production that lead to Don Mancini his own Chucky series that has been a breath of fresh air into horror.
When it comes to Rob Zombie's The Munsters, I enjoyed everything that didn't take place in Transylvania(France, loved the airplane part and everything in Mockingbird Heights). the reactions of normal people have seeing them is a huge part of the Munsters, which is something this film needed. honestly I'll give a Rob Zombie directed sequel a chance if someone else writes it or helps RZ write it. it was OK compared to something like Hocus Pocus2.

I've been a fan of The Munsters since the 60s, and I have nothing but praise for what Rob created. It is a beautiful tribute to the original series, the colour scheme is gorgeous, the actors all do a great job, and the story, while being a little weak in places, captures the spirit of the original series nicely. I have NO idea where all the negative feelings about this film are coming from. Thank you Rob for a fantastic gift to Munsters fans!
Solesisita, totally respect your opinion, but I couldn't disagree more....I loved it. It could have been better, sure, but I think overall it was enormously fun. You can see the love that Rob put into it, and I applaud him for it.
Im not gonna lie, I low-key enjoyed it. Like it wasn't a "good" movie by any means but maybe it was because it was getting such hate online and my expectations were low but I actually found it to be a charming little mess of a Munsters movie with really impressive set pieces. Not great, but harmless. I can tell Zombie definitely was having fun with it, being one of his favorite franchises.
Holy shit, he actually did it, he actually reviewed Rob Zombie's The Munsters. If "Here Come the Munsters" were still on TubiTV I'd be asking for a comparison between that and this, also, I didn't think Nostalgia Critic would actually throw in a Doctor Who reference in there (though he did use the 11th/12th Doctor's sonic screwdriver instead of the 7th Doctor's).
While I don't like the movie as a whole, the set design is amazing. I just love them. You can see the artists and craftsmen really put it all out in those set pieces.
Its movies like this that make me SOOOO grateful for The Nostalgia Critic for remembering it so we don't have to because I'm probably gonna skip this one.
I really don't understand why this is getting so much hate. I grew up watching The Munsters, and I like it a lot. This movie...it feels just like it. Just...more modernized and slightly exaggerated. There's nothing wrong with that. So, people are just hating on something for the sake of it; as someone who KNOWS the original show, this movie did just fine. Yes, it's not perfect, but the heart is there. The acting is hilarious, the jokes are fun, the set is amazing, the story...you don't really need one, since the original was just a bunch of random episodes...so the movie is fine. People, stop hating on EVERYTHING nowadays; it's getting old.
I think a lot of the “munsters fans” need to go back and watch the show. This movie had the same humor as the show. It would be nice to have a balck and white version. This is a prequel so the kids not being makes some sense but still I can see not having them as a disappointment. Overall fun campy movie which is what I would expect from the munsters.
Honestly i feel like this movie gets picked on a bit much because when it does something really interesting and out of the box it does work a lot and sure not every scene work but for the ones that do they work well.

I really liked this movie. It reminded me of a Halloween TV movie that would of aired when I was a kid
It looks pretty decent.
This is how I felt as well. I haven't seen the Munsters since I was a kid watching Nick at Nite but it did kind of take me back to staying up late watching it and getting a good chuckle out of it. Meh, I give it a 2.5/5
@@chasehedges6775 its not
Honestly it's not really Halloween until Rob Zombie makes a crazy insane horror Halloween themed film or a Saw film comes out
Btw what would you think of a new saw where John Kramer is alive? Turns out he had a twin brother. Who actually died.
Here are some series I’d love to see reviewed this way:
Madagascar, Ice Age, Toy Story, Spy Kids*, The Santa Clause*, Cars, Star Wars original trilogy and prequel trilogy, and Despicable me.
*(Yes, I am aware that he’s talk about a movie from this series in the past, but I still think they warrant mentioning. I mean if he can review a movie for Disneycember and for NC and vice versa, ha can do this too.)
When he’s been at it for 15 years, he might as well bring things forward rather than spread it out.
I’d love an Ice Age series review
I love that I can feel the passion oozing from this film. It will develop a cult following one day.
I’m honestly tempted to buy the blu-ray just so I can hear Zombie’s commentary.
1:32, "Stop, he's dead, he's already dead!" Lol!! Poor kid.
I like to imagine that Munster is under the influence of The Mask and we can’t tell because he’s already green.
So this is what happens when Cookie Monster breaks your kneecaps because you didn't give him his cookies
So this is why the Easter Bunny drank too much Code Red and started to become a crazy and insane murderous Dentist
Thanks for taking a look at this movie and your own opinion that way I could see if I want to if you enjoyed it 😉
I honestly love how one of the characters name is just Tin Can Man
I grew up watching the Munsters with my grandparents in reruns. This was a wonderful, mostly faithful adaptation of the original show, and I enjoyed how carefully the actors studied and reproduced the original characters mannerisms and voices. This is one of the few times I held a smile for so long since Covid hit.
So this is why Blade doesn't invite Rob Zombie to hunt and kill Vampires with him
Is it odd to anyone else Rob Zombie has a strange feeling of wanting to remake a film
Man i so can't wait for in 25 years when Rob Zombie makes a Clifford the Big Red Dog remake and makes it a Horror Movie
I would sell my house to see this movie happen.
Oh, this is gonna hurt. Also Doug please do Silver Bullet for your Stephen King Review. It's Gary Busey fighting a Werewolf with a kid on a suped up Wheelchair. TACKLE THIS.
He actually went easy on it somewhat.
Honestly the one thing i wish this film had was when Grandpa walked in for the first time it just started to play Dracula by Rob Zombie
Man if i had Nickle every time Rob Zombie used a Strobe Light i be really rich right now
Would not be surprised if Herman Munster is Oscar the Grouch's cousin.
So this is why the Kool-Aid Man keeps turning into Metal Superman
So this is true reason Marty and Doc had to go back in time
Would not shock me that Herman Munster gave those drugs to Raoul Duke and we just never knew about it.
Would not be surprised if this leads to Kevin Smith making a movie on the origins of Mac Tonight
Is it weird to say this feels to weird and insane even for Rob Zombie levels of weird and insane?
It’s not weird at all.
as my Dad would say, "Weird is relative."
I see the Lobsters got too much Mercury again.
Man this remake of Air Force One is a lot darker than i remember it being
The major difference between The Addams Family and The Munsters was, while both were spooky, The Addams Family were spooky acting and looking, being odd and weird, while The Munsters were spooky looking, but were otherwise a completely wholesome family.
Would not be surprised if Fletcher Reede is also Grandpa's son
Honestly what's really cool about the teaser trailer of this film is, The teaser trailer is a shot-by-shot remake of the The Munsters (1964) title sequence.
So this is why Herman Munster isn't great with reverse Mortgage
Rob Zombie was a poor choice to make this movie happen.
Tim Burton should have been picked to make this movie as he wanted to make.
I've heard a lot of people did not like this movie at all
I guess he was busy working on the Wednesday Adams TV show and with the script they had for this movie, I wouldn't really want Burton to direct it.
I'm getting "Son of Mask" vibes from this movie.
Honestly i will say this whenever you here Rob Zombie is going to make a new film the one thing you can't say is your not interested with how the film will be when you watch it.
I find so weird that this is the one film Rob Zombie just decided to get really intrigued and interested by
It was apparently a childhood favorite of his.
he was a legit fan of the show. check out the video where he showed his house, full of munsters memorabilia.
"If you have a TV or a monitor that allows you to watch it that way, definitely do it. It does look better."
I did and I watched the rest of the review this way because it does look better.
Dude Cult of Chucky was a legit horror movie where the original creator was given full control of his IP 1440's 1 and only good production that lead to Don Mancini his own Chucky series that has been a breath of fresh air into horror.
That Tremors 6 also good movie if you a B movies fan
So this is the extended Pippi Longstocking elevator scene
This is way too much like a Disney Channel movie
Man DJ Rob Zombie is really odd sometimes
Man Barry B. Benson must of had a really horrible day trying to sell a Snow Cone to Herman Munster
Grampa was the best part of the movie. Him and Herman's interactions were pretty funny.
This is one of Universal 1440’s better movies
When it comes to Rob Zombie's The Munsters, I enjoyed everything that didn't take place in Transylvania(France, loved the airplane part and everything in Mockingbird Heights). the reactions of normal people have seeing them is a huge part of the Munsters, which is something this film needed. honestly I'll give a Rob Zombie directed sequel a chance if someone else writes it or helps RZ write it. it was OK compared to something like Hocus Pocus2.
A Svengoolie shout out, good going critic. I had to explain the ref to my younger munchkins. I LOVED it.
Svengoolie is awesome
Makes sense. Chicago.
@@claymathewselevator8121 I live in Bellingham, WA now. There is no WGN, no Svengoolie, & they do not do dogs dragged through the garden. Do you know what the put on a Vienna Beef dog? Do you? No you do not. They put m*th*r f*ck*ng cream f*ck*ng cheese. Now, I love me some cream cheese on a bagel, but not on my Vienna Beef dog. On a Vienna Beef dog you need mustard, kraut, neon green pickle relish, tomato wedges, a pickle spear, & celery salt. WTF were they thinking when they put cream cheese on a dog?
They only reason we stay is that I just got tenure, my waifu got promoted at her job, my eldest 2 munchkins are getting a free university education, my youngest 5 munchkins can play in the front lawn & not have to worry about a drive by, but give me a dog dragged through the garden once in a while.
@@EB3Rplus Try living in Washington state brother.
How often do you chuck your chicken? Lol
Thank you Rob for a fantastic gift to Munsters fans!
i’m a munsters fan and i hated it ☹️
Solesisita, totally respect your opinion, but I couldn't disagree more....I loved it. It could have been better, sure, but I think overall it was enormously fun. You can see the love that Rob put into it, and I applaud him for it.
I think to think this movie shows the flaws a lot of them had before having their baby and becoming wholesome. 🎉
"Nothing but Trouble" would make for a great Nostalgiaween episode. I am still astounded you've never done this movie.
Fun fact:
As they are being led into the weird town, the movie used set pieces that appeared in both "Knight Rider" and "The Dukes Of Hazzard".
So this is what happens when you spray too much Salt into a Bananas eyelids
Holy shit, he actually did it, he actually reviewed Rob Zombie's The Munsters. If "Here Come the Munsters" were still on TubiTV I'd be asking for a comparison between that and this, also, I didn't think Nostalgia Critic would actually throw in a Doctor Who reference in there (though he did use the 11th/12th Doctor's sonic screwdriver instead of the 7th Doctor's).
Caricature is an apt way to describe the film. Everything is so heightened it doesn’t feel like an actual film.
While I don't like the movie as a whole, the set design is amazing. I just love them. You can see the artists and craftsmen really put it all out in those set pieces.
I gotta say i don't think i've ever laughed at a trailer as much as this one did.
I haven't seen this yet, but it looks beautifully batshit insane! I'm definitely watching this tonight!
It sucks.
Its movies like this that make me SOOOO grateful for The Nostalgia Critic for remembering it so we don't have to because I'm probably gonna skip this one.
So this is is why whenever Danny DeVito drinks milk he becomes the Green M&M
& Yes, I'm hoping for a sequel so we can see the whole family.
I had fun with this movie. That's more than I can say for a lot of other movies, so I give it some credit on that alone.
Definitely has some fun moments
💯
This movie reminds me more of the tv series of “The Munsters Today” than the original “The Munsters”.
It's hilariously telling that the movie just ends when the Munsters made their money
I do love the Scooby-Doo parody opening, but of course, Buster and Chaplin had the best parts.
3:36 Cult of Chucky is awesome and I will not hear any discussion otherwise.
You are correct sir
